Postgame Bullets: DLSU 51 FEU 65

  • There were lapses in concentration, and the inexperience showed as well. FEU was clearly the more mature team, with an edge in big game exposure and individual one-on-one talents. There were some defensive lapses and turnovers, and the Tams capitalized on these miscues to pull away.
  • Despite the second blowout loss, there are positives that we can take from this game. The effort, the intensity was apparent for long stretches. Marata and Bringas proved that their selection to the team was justified. Our veterans had their moments. Ferdinand showed his toughness and held his ground in the paint. I’m fairly certain that we’ll start seeing significant improvements in the way the team plays in the next few games.
  • Tony Atayde predicted that we would end the eliminations at 7-7. So we will probably start winning more games than we lose. The way the team played today, that’s a realistic expectation.

I’m happy the dynamic potential in Bringas, Marata, Atkins, Kish Co, Ferdi together in this game though… showing some Animo and desperation to win…
Their frustrations cannot be contained in the long run… I hope to see them lifting us from the mud-deep we’re stuck-in!

I hope the rest of the team will develop the heart to win as well!

  • O_o

The score doesn’t justify the way the Archers played yesterday. Sure we lost by double digits again BUT this wasn’t like the 1st game. There was better ball movement, more defensive pressure AND more importantly the players started to show the FIRE and the FIGHT (not the Brian Ilad kind) in them.

I’d like to salute Marata, for having the courage to get in the game and try to make things happen, Ferdie for working his ass off to get those steals and to defend the paint, James for a great 1st quarter. Actually there were stretches where we played great basketball, unfortunately the stretches were short lived. I expect that we’ll execute better in the next game vs UP and hopefully come up with a win.

I am not a coach not do I claim to have the answers. However, seeing how the veterans like Barua, Mangahas and most especially Malabes have shown no leadership, heart or even maturity, maybe they should be benched and the rookies made to play. What do we have to lose?

  • http://paulaandreamarie.multiply.com paulaandrea

i agree with Mr. Atayde, we got nothing to lose if the rookies will be the one playing..let’s see what they will do for the team! i guess we already saw what the veterans have.

  • Where’s Walsham???

    @Tony

I agree with you completely. I posted this comment on the pregame bullets page…

“What a team!!! Let me offer some advise for Coach Franz. Since the so called “veterans” are not playing that way, why not give the rookies more minutes. The team is rebuilding anyway. Why invest any more time of the likes of Ferdinand and Malabes when you can develop Bringas, Marata and Bagatsing immediately by giving them playing time. They dont have much to lose. They already lost two games by a combined 30+ points.”

Its so frustrating to see the veterans not even seem to care that they are being embarassed. For the life of me, i dont know why Malabes and Barua are on the team. It seems like guys from the LS Alumni league are better than these players. As a friend of mine so correctly pointed out “with Malabes, its either swak or airball, nothing in between”. It means you cant trust him and cant win with him as your star. I like the Marata kid. He seems to have spunk and a willingness to excel.

  • LSGH40

We definitely played better yesterday. Once the individual skills of the rookies start to shine with confidence then the system of franz will fall into place. The offensive patterns are still ok but the individual execution is not. We still have to hone up on our offensive skills. Sad to say even the skills of our veterans need a lot of workovers. Our defense is not far from the Ateneo and Feu brand of defense. We saw that yesterday. We need to click on the offensive end.

  • LSGH40

Our next game with UP is a very important game. It is one that will give us our first win and drive us out of the bottom. It will also be the kick off to our rise back to contention. It will be confidence builder the team needs to start winning. We should go all out to support our team in this game.

  • ICJ

dapat nga siguro yung ibang rookies ang palaruin.
si gabriel banal, i heard he’s good, at si marata..

at least our team was somewhat resilient yesterday and had the will to win compared to the ue game.

mangahas should be MORE aggressive. I believe he must be the focal point of the offense. but right now he’s so predictable, kaya wala siyang magawa.

the team’s offense is the main problem. naghihingalo ang mga players sa opensa. the defense and hustle plays were there.

tiyagain na lang dapat ng players natin yan. go strong to the hoop, wag puro set shots!!!

    keep the faith!!
    animo la salle!!

  • Fred Cebu

I am sorry but I do not agree with Mr. Atayde’s prediction. I see a DLSU 5 to 9 win loss record this year. I cannot see the Archers winning against AdmU, UE, FEU and UST. They might be able to win 5 games vs NU, AdU and UP…but that is even a tall order. I also do not understand the rotation strategy of coach Franz. I think more playing time should be given to Bringas, Marata, Tolentino and Mendoza. Coach Franz tends to change combinations too often and a working five on the floor is often replaced just to accommodate more players. The good thing about some of the rookies is that they have a good future in the following seasons. Let us use this season to develop the rookies. I can see a champion team in 2 years time.

  • Gerry G

We should definitely beat UP in our next game so that we can start getting the feel of a win. And hopefully it becomes a habit…again.

I agree on giving more exposure to the rookies, particularly Marata and Bringas. I don’t know about Banal yet since he hasn’t been given much exposure yet (relative to Marata and Bringas). I can see that Marata has a very good attitude and the is gung-ho about the games.

Let’s start winning games. ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

  • Ana Ysabel

give the veterans another chance. we dont even know what is going on with the team. baka naman may mga nangyayari na di natin alam kaya ganun na lang laro ng mga veterans. napakadali natin mag judge ng mga players, bakit kaya di na lang kayo maglaro? pag mga rookies naman masama nilaro may masasabi kayo. pag nanalo lang naman may mga naghihintay sa players sa mga gates pero pag talo wala na. imbes na magsalita kayo ng di maganda bakit kaya di ninyo na lang encourage na maging maayos laro nila. and one more thing di papayagan ni MVP na pumasok ang La Sallle maski sa final 4 kaya mas panoorin ninyo referees

  • bhadji

@Ana Ysabel: Because the veterans don’t seem to care to win! I care to win! The rookies seem to care to win! Why not give them more playing time instead on banking on the veterans who are all in a state of “staleness”… There’s still goodness in the team you see… maybe the rookies will inspire the veterans to do better! Ironically… should be the other way around!

  • marts chua

our team played like a bunch of high school kids again!!!

  • Anakin

This is the time where our players need our support more than ever.

Of course, we are expecting a lot from our team and our vets. Say–
Hyram Bagatsing / Simon Atkins to be in charge of the floor, executing well thought plays from our coaches.. And James Mangahas to be our unstoppable wing guy.. And Peejay Barua to provide huge offense especially from the 3pt arc..

After losing 2 games, I am too like many, feel down. Who wants losing anyway??? But maybe instead of finding faults right now, we can also explore other realistic factors..

Peejay and James are now assuming the roles of JV and Rico. As a result, also being now the FOCUS of other teams to shut down. If I’m not mistaken, during UE game; Paul Lee was even manning Barua. Unlike before, they were probably just second after JV and Rico in the defensive consideration of other teams, so they were a little free to display their talents (and helped a lot in winning us games).

Great our rookies are performing well, but maybe it would be thoughtful of us to remember that our competitors are just seeing how they play in the UAAP for the first time. Maybe they are not that checked yet, thus giving them more liberty than our veterans? It is very good for us, that we have talented rookies!

As for our vet players, I am not excusing them, just combing for probable reasons. I am sure just like us, our players would like to win games and make our Lasallian Community proud. Let us not doubt that yet.

Not until they have stopped attending grueling basketball practice, while making sure to pass their classes (to qualify to suit up as archers)– let us not be hasty to say that they should not be field in.

Not until the coaches and team managers tell us that these vet players are all TAMAD at WALANG TALENT at WALANG PUSO. Then really, they shouldn’t be called archers anymore.

  • marts chua

kulang na kulang sa talent yung team natin. we should really give more effort on defense and try to push the ball every single time. we will not win playing the half court game. we should run and speed up the game. if we play good defense, we should get some steals or get the rebounds and then we can run. RUN RUN RUN!!!

  • painkillaz

We lost to a veteran FEU team that is rock solid. Sheer talent is not enought, the team needs to put more hard work on their game. We didn’t capitalize on FEU’s weaknesses.

  • Nel

Unfortunately, FEU doesn’t have that many weaknesses that the team could exploit yesterday.

@marts, the team has loads of talent. They have not yet been able to utilize that talent productively, because they’re still learning how to play with each other.

Our first two opponents were teams that are considered as locks to make the final 4, both loaded with veterans. Our young team was definitely outplayed in both games, but I expect them to start playing better and win games. Against the consensus top 3 (Ateneo, FEU, UE), the Archers will probably lose more games, but against the rest, they should compile enough wins to get us to the final 4. It won’t be easy, though.

To get to Tony Atayde’s prediction of an even 7-7 record at the end of the elims, the team will need to win 7 and lose only 5 more games. That’s achievable.

  • Animo

This team is actually very talented… It’s translating that talent onto the court which is our problem… We showed our signature tenacious D, but we also showed our immaturity and inconsistency… Our offense is very limited… It was clear that we rely heavily on the 3… We should try to develop our post game and we should start running A LOT… I like how we rebound, but we still give away too much offensive board… As for positives… I love the potential of our rookies… With special mention to Marata and Bringas… Marata has the potential to be the next Ren-Ren, but he has to further his game… He’s a marked man when it comes to 3 pointers… Bringas on the other hand is a beast of man… He has a lot of talent and post moves… BUT, he always gets the ball a bit farther than you’d like for a post player… He should position himself a bit closer to the basket and the guards should give him the ball when in position… As for those who call the rotation erratic… Can you blame the guy?… His team is very young… He’s looking for the right match-ups and combinations…

  • Reynaldo

We’re not used to getting humiliated this way. I guess we have to tone down expectations for this season and be happy with the 7-7 record predicted by Tony Atayde.

  • PotPot

Can we still expect something with the team? It was really frustrating watching them losing without showing any fighting spirit specially the VETS

  • lei

before the uaap started, feu focused already on the ateneo-la salle games.. they even planned a new way of ticketing because they were expecting a GREAT rematch of the finals last year.. the question now is: “will it be worth watching for the guys in green and white?”

  • dis

Now that we’ve accepted our fate for this season, let’s simplify our goal even more, which is…… NOT TO END UP DEAD LAST! If we end the season at least 7th place, that already calls for a bonfire!

ANIMO LA SALLE! BEAT U.P. (for seventh place)!

  • lei

    i agree with dis..
yes, we have our faith.. we keep our faith..
but we should also learn to accept reality..
our players can’t match (as of now) the talent of ue, feu and most of all, ateneo..
but i know, they have the heart that could withstand this kind of situation..
this is not our year in basketball..

we can still be like CSB..
they ended up on the bottom half of the basketball standings
but still, they emerged as the general champions of the ncaa.,
    it’s just a single event..
we still have the chance to dominate UAAP..

but for now, we should not end up as the 8th team in basketball..

  • James G

You guys don’t seem to get it – it’s easy to say “bench the veterans in favor of the rookies” because you aren’t the coach! It’s easy to sit back in your chairs and become the “backseat driver” who knows better than anyone, but do you really know what you are asking for? Have any of you thought of the consequences of such a move? If the coach does what you ask for and benches the veterans or his starters, then what kind of message is he sending to the team? Think about that. Basically he’d be saying that “we surrender” and we’re going to accept the fact that we are a bad team and pretty much flush the season down the toilet and give up! Is that what you fans really want? I read all this “keep the faith” and “Animo” and positive stuff yet at the same time I read this about sitting the starters in favor of the rookies signaling, to me anyway, a surrender. That absolutely makes no sense unless it’s pure emotion speaking… and coming from fans I can understand why you feel that way – heck, I’m frustrated too – but you have to broaden your view and quit being so myopic thinking that you can wave a magic wand by sitting the veterans and replace them with the rookies, who are unproven, and expect to become a more-competitive team.

  • Nel

    I posted this in AP:

Everyone has their own ideas of why we lost, and many are not bashful about suggesting how the team’s performance could be improved by sitting or playing certain Archers.

I wouldn’t dream of telling Franz what to do. I’m not privy to his plan for the season, how he plans to develop the team, what his timing and milestones are. What I’m sure of is that he and his coaches are acutely and intimately aware of how the team is today, where the weaknesses are, and what can be improved. He knows exactly what the players are capable of. He continues to give the veterans a lot of playing time for a reason. He’s shown in the past that he will allow players like Renren to keep hoisting those treys even after missing 10 straight shots; Peejay, James, and Bader have the license to shoot and thus are given their minutes. Franz still trusts his players, and as long as they follow the plan he’s laid out, he will continue to give them playing time.

Franz is willing to let his players make mistakes, even if it may cost us the game. That’s part of the plan. That’s the only way the players will learn and gain the necessary experience. And that’s the only way he will know if he can rely on them in crunch time.

The one thing that Franz does not allow is for a player not to try or give his best in a game or even in practice. Anyone who is guilty of this offense will sit; no ifs or buts. So if we see players who don’t seem to be performing but still get ample minutes, it’s clear that Franz trusts them enough to risk them being on the floor. Now, if someone criticizes the rotation of Franz, it’s tantamount to saying that they don’t trust the judgment of Franz. Is anyone willing to say that?

I trust that Franz has a plan, that he knows what he’s doing. He built this team, he chose the players for a reason. I’m going to leave the coaching to him, allow him to do his job just like he’s allowing the players to do theirs. I’ll do my job as a supporter – to cheer on the team.

    I’ll KEEP THE FAITH!

  • LSGH40

The idea is to take every game with a a big fighting heart. If we lose because of lack of developmental skills that is ok.We are a young and raw team. But if we lose because of lack of a fighting heart that is not acceptable. I believe before the season ends we can spring an upset or two among the top teams. Hopefully it will be ateneo. We have nothing to lose when we play them. I agree we should work hard to dev our defense that we can keep the opponents score low so we can have a chance especially with the top teams.

  • lei

for me huh, i’d be very happy na if will have a 2-12 win-loss record as long as the two wins will be coming from the ateneo-la salle games.. =)

but of course, aim for more wins!! animo la salle!

open our minds, open our eyes and keep our faith!

  • miguel

the ball is round, the world is round, sometimes we are up and sometimes we are down as the sayings go. this is the down times we are experiencing with our basketball team. dont lose hope, they can only get better if not this season but next. its time to rebuild a championship team and i see our team giving DLSU the honors and championship again next year or in 2011, our centennial year.
however, it is important to the athletes and to us the fans/alumni to totally and unconditionally support them at this time. go team fight…..

  • growling_archer

i watched the game on tv but only until the 3rd quarter.it really hurts so much that i don’t see the players especially the veterans to play hard. they are not organized at all..no leader on the court that the players would respect and follow. there were a lot of turnovers and travelling violations. i see the improvement though ..it was better than the first game. a 0-2 record was not surprising..it would be really hard to beat ue and feu with a team composed of a lot of rookies that lack experience. ARCHERS, the support from the fans will never end..but please don’t let us down. there’s still a lot of room for improvement.
