The View from the Armchair (Game 2 vs FEU)

A season like no other

A 0-2 start to the season is unusual, but this is not your typical year. A second straight double-digit loss. Uncharted territory for a team mentored by Franz Pumaren.

The bad news

Another game where the Archers shot horribly. Threw the ball away several times due to errors or miscues. Passed up open outside shots, only to travel after the ball fake. Had 6 shots blocked, but was unable to block any FEU shots in return. Uncharacteristically made 18 turnovers to only 13 for the opponent.

Sure there were lapses. The Archer defense would make it difficult for FEU to get close to the basket, only to allow FEU to penetrate and score in the last couple of seconds of their shot clock. A botched defensive rotation allowed FEU to score on a Barroca triple off a baseline throw in with only 4 seconds left on the shot clock. The FEU guards also copied the UE tactic of taking their men on the dribble to penetrate the lane and either take it to the hoop or dish off to a waiting teammate under the basket.

There are still some deficiencies on defense, and miscues on offense. These showed the uncertainty and lack of familiarity of the players with each other, reflecting Franz’s statement that the team has not been able to practice as a complete unit due to illness and injury. The offense continued to be out of whack, with a very low shooting percentage from the field. FEU is a more mature team, and their players are probably more talented individually. They have 3 national team players and one national youth standout. They excel in one-on-one plays usually off the dribble. They have good outside shooters. And their inside game is better. The result was not unexpected.

That’s the bad news.

Is there any good news?

The good news? The Archers played better than they did in game 1. The defense showed up for long stretches, though it still wasn’t 40 minutes of the press from hell. The press netted some turnovers. The intensity picked up. Definitely an improvement over the first game.

One positive – defense. They held a strong FEU team to 65 points, the second straight opponent to score these few points. Unfortunately, our offense was misfiring for the second consecutive game, but with more practice time together, that will be quickly addressed. Another positive – the increased intensity of the team, as shown by some players like Ferdinand, Bringas, Marata, Tolentino, Atkins. Six steals, 3 by Ferdinand, showed that the hustle is still there. Foul shooting also improved, and this will have a major impact later on in the season during close games. And finally, the team is starting to show some teamwork.

What could be improved?

Much of the team’s inability to play the usual Archer game is due to their lack of confidence. It shows in the uncertainty on offense. Consistency. Familiarity with each other. Maintaining their focus and concentration throughout the game. Trust in each other. Learning how to play with each other.

It’s a crisis of confidence; the team doesn’t know yet how good they are together. As a result, they play more as individuals rather than as teammates who intuitively know what each will do on the court. Once they gain their confidence, it will be similar to turning on a switch, and the team will begin to play the way we know they can.

One area which will have a dramatic impact is for the team to have more confidence in their shots. We all saw how effective the long shots were during the pre-season, but so far they haven’t been shooting well. They’re missing shots they routinely used to make. Once they regain their confidence, the shots will start falling consistently, and their team’s play will radically improve. And the opponents’ defenses will suddenly look vulnerable.

These aren’t technical but soft skills. They already have the basketball skills, and the job of Franz and his staff is to harmonize these talents to extract the maximum from this young team. Build up their self confidence. Instruct them to ignore the so-called constructive criticism coming from the ranks of the supporters. Remind them of the reason that they’re on this Green Archer team. Get them believing that they will win games and fulfill the potential the coaches saw in the players. And make sure that belief is translated into reality following the plan.

Moving forward, we can probably expect the team to win more games than they lose. But this team is still a work-in-progress, so expect more tinkering by the coaches to fine tune the Archer game. It won’t be pretty, but the team will get the job done. The results will be apparent in the second round. Just in time to get the team into the final 4.

KEEP THE FAITH!

I am pretty amused of the DLSU play. It is very unpredictable in both negative and positive ways. Positive: The rookies are quite talented and yes they lack experience so they are really perform way better than expected. Especially the guards who dribble the ball like crazy. I mean they are able to control the ball despite the nervousness and other factors that only the veterans could have coped up to. Webb is way better than the previous season, I think that he should be given more playing time to fully unleash his talent. I personally saw him play during my HS years where their team would literally pulverize our team w/ more than 20+ points and was not able to see any hint of that performance last year. Ferdinand seems to have his breakout year this season. As far as the two games are concerned, I think that he's the best performing archer. Working hard for the rebounds and defense. Negative: WHERE THE HELL ARE OUR VETERANS!?!?! These veterans should be teaching the rookies how to play like a champion. Most of these veterans were part of the DLSU come back team and they have lots of UAAP experience. But I don't see them stepping up to their game. No Hustle! No one is slashing through the lane. It seems that the old defense of DLSU is gone. No presses or whatsoever. No leader. This is obvious, no one is being the Green Archer icon. Unlike in the previous seasons, there were Casio, Maier, Tang, Yeo and Cardona. I can't see anyone who has the guts to have the leadership. And this just reminds me of Bagatsing being the team captain, I think that Barua could have been more appropriate instead of this 2nd year player. Barua needs to step up! He's part of the RP team and I haven't seen any of his moves yet. I think that he should ask for the ball for a lot more times and shoot some basktets. He has talent and experience which will make him a candidate for the next DLSU icon.

b-9, Give some credit to Barroca. The guy is good already before and improved some more when he played with the smart-gilas national team. It's not easy defending against him. Remember how he dismantled our defense last year in the second round? If I'm mistaken he unloaded 26 points against us going isolation against his defender. The help defense even couldn't do anything against him. And by help, I mean shot blocker Rico Maierhofer chasing after his shot.

You'll have to wait for next season to see LA Revilla go up against Monfort. LA isn't on the team this year due to illness. Joel Tolentino, on the other hand, should be a good match up for any point guard of the competition. Here's the roster of the Green Archers for season 72: http://www.greenarchers.ph/2009-de-la-salle-green-archers-roster/

yeah, it's just the start of the season. i know it's too early to tell but with the way these guys are playing, it looks like they'll never make it to the final 4... Excited ako sa match up between Monfort and Revilla. Monfort has been scoring really well for AdMU while Revilla is not contributing a lot for the greenies.

Good thing though, the team played with "SPUNK" this time...

The key is improvement. You cannot simulate game conditions in practice no matter how hard the coaches push the players so it's vital that the players learn as much as they can during the game! Not having watched any of the games so far, the news about the team playing better against FEU is welcome news indeed. In order to become winners, consistency is key so it helps when the players show improvement. Of course, you still have to protect the ball on offense and play hard on defense but little things matter at this level of play and as long as the team continues to show progress, I think they can be productive all season.

archers really lack a solid scorer to lean on right now...I think coaches need to focus on their frontline...parang soft sila in terms of defending the boards

i think kelangan lang nila ng warm up.. problema kasi pressure kaagad sumalubong sakanila.. why? UE muna den FEU naman.. siguro kelangan muna ng warm-up.. dapat UP or NU muna kasi consistent sila kasi diba syempre hindi naman sa nakakainsulto ako..nakasanayan na nating sabihin na "ahh sisiw lang yan sla" im sure yan din ang nasa isip ng ibang players.. tapos diyan sila nagkakaroon ng team work because of consistency.. tapos pag nakalaro na ang ateneo, nasa isip na nila na, "ano ang nagpapanalo samin last game? ahhh consistency lang atsaka team work ang naging paraan namin upang manalo so kelangan lagi akong consistent and makisali sa teamwork.." and they will keep on repeating it and they'll keep on winning at the same time when this time comes..

ANIMO LASALLE!!!! La Salle is La Salle pa rin!

This reminds me of ateneo's "dark ages" in the 90's. Except now, the shoe is on the other foot. So the only thing I'm looking forward to this year, is that we UPSET ateneo twice. Nevermind if those are our only two wins of the season. It will be mission accomplished, if that happens.

guys...I also watched the game live, I noticed that they improved-because the team can't be any worse in the UE game, they did not really improved if you'll ask me, have you watched how barocca sliced through the dlsu defense like the archers were welcoming him to score on them. Don't get me wrong cause I support this team, I was there until the buzzer sounded. It just so disappointing that we can't beat a quality team more so what if we face ateneo?

I agree. and I BELIEVE. keep the faith!!

Lets wait for the coaching staff to adjust their plays and strategies for the future games. I am excited to see the improvements and for sure they will be improving in every game. Let us not forget we need to peak at the right time as well. In my mind Ateneo might be peaking too early. Remember UE? We peak at the right time we can get in the round of 4. I agree with johni. Lets not give up on the team. They need us now more than ever. ANIMO LA SALLE!!!!!

A closer look at the game stats reveals the following: The much maligned veterans actually were pretty accurate: James went 2/3 on 3pt shots, Peejay was 40% on 2pt shots (2/5) and 2/2 fts, Hyram was 1/2 on 2pt shots and 2/2 on fts, Bader was 3/7 on 2pointers. They probably need to take more of the right shots The 4 veterans accounted for half of the total rebounds (21/42). Bader had the most rebounds of the team (7), followed by James (6) They also accounted for 4 out of the 7 assists of the team Ferdinand had half of the total steals (3/6) Actually, the veterans have what it takes to dominate, compete effectively, and lead by example; they just need the confidence to do it on a consistent basis.

They just need someone to score consistently. Their defense is getting better but they can't shoot the ball. It's the second consecutive game that nobody scored in double digits. I am still keeping my faith on this team and I believe that they will be a championship contender again when the rookies develop especially Bringas.

I watched the game live, too. Agree that there was an improvement in the 'hustle' of the players. I also saw the lack of support of students, faculty, and Archer fans in general. There was a motley crowd of supporters present during the game. The Archers need them now more than ever - win or lose. Keep the Animo alive!

I watched the game live last Saturday. Sure they turned the ball over and didn't defend the ball well, but there are also bright spots that improved for the team compared to their last game against UE. I still believe. ANIMO.
