Postgame Bullets: DLSU 73 UP 63

  • Finally a win, 73-63! Against a UP team that proved to be an even match during the pre-season.
  • UP took the early lead on hot shooting from UP, particularly Martin Reyes. However, after his initial outburst, he was shackled by the defense.
  • For the first time, La Salle led at halftime.
  • Franz went to the veterans for most of the game, and they delivered. James was the first Archer to break the double digit scoring barrier, followed by Joshua, who did it on pure hustle and energy. Hyram was effective, but his playing time was limited by his fouls, as was Simon’s.
  • Maui showed aggressiveness in going for his shot early in the game with some success, scoring on a mid-range jumper and in the paint, but was content to help set up the plays for the rest of the game.
  • Bader showed why he is held in high regard by the coaches, working tirelessly on defense and finally finding his shot. He scored on back-to-back triples that created separation from the ever-dangerous Maroons, as well as on a couple of drives.
  • Ferdinand continued his steady play in the slot, banging bodies with and making life difficult for the UP front line. The interior defense of the Archers clogged the lane, effectively neutralizing Woody Co and Magi Sison. Kish Co, Arvie Bringas, and James alternated in manning the paint and making it difficult for UP to penetrate
  • After not making any blocks in the first 2 games, the Archer defense blocked 3-4 UP shots, one by Simon on his former teammate Martin Reyes.
  • The pressure defense forced UP into 32 errors for the game. Perimeter defense was also better, and UP was forced into a few shot clock violations because they could not get clear of their defenders.
  • There are sill some rough spots, notably passing errors. And there is still some uncertainty on the offense. These will be minimized gradually as the season moves on.
  • UP applied their own version of the press which allowed the Maroons to claw their way back from a double digit lead to trail by 3, but successive baskets by the Archers brought the lead back to a manageable level.
  • The Archer press break will need some fine tuning. Franz played a 2 point guard configuration in the 4th quarter to counteract the UP press. Joel Tolentino continued to impress, and played very effectively with Simon.
  • Jed Manguera made his first appearance in the tournament, late in the first half. Gab Banal and Yutien Andrada did not play.
  • Scores:
    DLSU 73 – Mangahas 15, Malabes 14, Webb 13, Villanueva 8, Ferdinand 6, Bagatsing 6, Barua 4, Bringas 3, Tolentino 2, Atkins 2, Mendoza 0, Marata 0, Manguera 0, Co 0.

i think we shouldn’t be too hard on the players, because they could deliver, like this one against UP. we just let them be. they know the game best.

    animo!

Great game by our boys, and finally a win at the 72nd season of UAAP. I noticed that our boys played as a team, with good defense and offense, and more hustle and spunk, especially from Joshua Webb, Kish Co and Maui Villanueva. Congrats and keep on winning…Animo La Salle!!!

ika nga sabi ni coach franz: wala ng nagpapasikat

If only we had limited our turnovers ie. Malabes’ weak passes, and improved our shooting this would have been a very convincing blowout game. Still, the team shows signs of improvement after the first two games. I hope the team sustains the momentum for the following games.

    THE FIRST WIN! Yeah!

A win is a win is a win – by 1 by 10 or 20 points, it counts in the win/loss column as a big FAT “W”!!! I’m hoping this will springboard the confidence of the team and allow them to build on this success going forward. I’m reading that there’s still work to do but with their next opponent being a team with the same 1-2 record (Adamson) hopefully they will carry the momentum of this win to that game. I know this much from my own experience, practice will be a lot more pleasant after winning a game!

As expected, the trap did wonders for us. Arvie himself had several interceptions borne out of the trap. Our shots also finally went in. As previously stated, the problem is really execution and with it, the offense. The guys were more patient this time around. Coach Franz’s trust in the veterans didn’t waver. He still went to them and they delivered. Hopefully, we can see the vets and rookies playing as a team.

    Rektikano,

It’s good you pointed out how patience paid off for the team. They didn’t rush things, reduced the “gigil” factor, and stayed within the system.

The system works, but with this young crew it’s bound to take some time. Because they haven’t been playing together too much, familiarity and teamwork are not yet that good compared to Ateneo, FEU, and UE, whose teams have been playing together for at least a year and which boast of relatively intact lineups from last year.

That’s been the plan all along, to manage how this team will peak during the season. They’re still a ways to go before reaching peak form. Franz has been more than patient with this young team, and it will start to pay off. Even when the veterans weren’t playing or shooting well, he stuck with them.

Their 3point shooting has not been a credible threat so far. Up to now, it’s been easy to clog the lane and let them fire away (and miss) from long distance. But our lineup is stocked with players who can sink the 3pointer consistently, so once they start hitting the treys, all of a sudden they will be very hard to defend against. The defense is getting better, less holes and the players are learning to ready the opponents’ plays. The team is now developing that in-game poise. Once they get it all together, probably towards the end of the first round, that’s when they become a real threat to the stronger teams. The second round will be interesting for sure.

yeah right! i hope it won’t stop there… i know our boys can make it! play as a “team” guys… it’s definitely the main key to winning… and one more thing, never hesitate to make a shot… i noticed some of our rookies were right there in giving a shot but hesitated and missed out… sayang ang pagkakataon… GO lang ARCHERS! we can make it! ANIMO! :)
