Postgame Bullets: DLSU 64 AdU 63

  • Guess what? We’re now tied for 4th with UE.
  • As ugly as it seems, a win is still a win. Despite making 17 turnovers and missing 15 foul shots, the Archers were just fortunate that Adamson self destructed again in the closing seconds in overtime to nail its second straight win. The loss negated backup Falcon pg Alvarez’s career game. Adamson had previously blown a winnable game against FEU last week.
  • Peejay Barua did not play due to flu.
  • Kish Co had a monster game today, registering a career high with 17 points as well as providing hustle on both ends of the court. Kish had a near double double with 9 boards. How we wish he was around last year.
  • Hats off to captain Hyram Bagatsing for hitting the crucial shots down the stretch. As the leader of the team, he certainly stepped up when needed. Hyram also hit his career high of 11 points, making those important treys late in the game.
  • The Archer defense almost held Adamson to 1 point in the 2nd quarter, but allowed Adamson to score 5 points in the last 30 seconds, including a 3pointer launched from half court at the buzzer. Adamson’s 6 point 2nd quarter was the second consecutive opponent that the Archers have clamped down on defense in the 2nd quarter.
  • The team wore yellow patches on their uniforms in honor of former President Cory Aquino. The entire DLSU community are all in prayers for her recovery.
  • Yet another sorry loss for the Adamson Falcons, whose losses so far have all come in close games.
  • Trivia: in both games today, the player of the game was named Co: Kish and Woody

Its the start of the comeback for the Archers! I hope that in the next games, more supporters will be cheering for the team. Even Bro. Bernie is in Yellow during the AdU game and was telling those in the patron seats to cheer for us! The Animo lives on! :)

  • greentea

During the end of 4th quarter and OT, i was on the edge of my seat. What a game! Great game by Kish Co ang Hyram Bagatsing!

  • Reynaldo

Hyram Bagatsing and Arvie Bringas have the potential to attack the goal aggressively (as Joshua Webb does). If they do this, the Green Archers will be a force to reckon with.

  • Green Archie

The game was below par for UAAP standards. But DLSU definitely had better team play than Adamson.

  • Where’s Walsham???

Classic Bader Malabes! Almost costing DLSU the game. No offense but why is he even playing? As if airballing two three pointers and knuckleballing countless other shots was not enough, he double dribbled with less than 10 seconds remaining to almost shoot down DLSU. Even I can commit those awful plays, maybe i can be on the team as well. To paraphrase the commentator after a teammate put back his airballed three “That was a pass!” Says it all. Once more with feelings, CLASSIC MALABES!

hahaha… sooo true! very heart thumping game… the ARCHERS are back! they all did well… they played as a team… thanks to KISH, HYRAM and MAUI of course… and to the rest, whew! this is the usual LA SALLE game i’ve always want to see… i am just sooo happy for us guys! keep it up! ANIMO! :)

and oh, UP also did well… hahaha… imagine UP beating ADMU? that WAS unbelievable but they just did… ASTIGGG! :)

Let’s all remember that we can rant and rave about how individual players perform, but at the end of the day the coaches will decide on how the team plays. And more importantly, who gets on the team.

Most critics just see the points or errors, but they fail to see or appreciate the intangibles that the players bring to each game. Most people see only one side – theirs. They fail to grasp the big picture, what it takes to be a coach or player. What really goes on behind the scenes. Most of us who just watch the game see only the points scored or the errors. We fail to appreciate the behind-the-scenes activities that are part and parcel of being on the team. That’s why we’re just observers. If we were really that good, we’d be on the coaching staff.

Today, James and Bader didn’t perform as well as some would like. For that, they came in for their share of criticism, despite the win.

James may not have been as effective on offense, but he did his share in other areas, like tending the boards. He had that last important block on the Canada drive that Maui rebounded and was fouled. Maui converted one ft for the marginal point. James had 2 of the Archers’ 3 blocks for the game. And he played sick. Lesser players would have not shown up at all, yet James played the most minutes – 29.

So much criticism for Bader, who played for 26 minutes despite being sick today. Yet nobody noticed how ineffective Leo Canuday was today, scoring only 4 points in all of 29 minutes today. Canuday is a big guard who likes to overpower his man on offense. Early on, he tried to do the same with Bader, who promptly gave him the same treatment. Bader actually hit 40% of his 2point attempts but was off on his 3pointer. On his missed treys – remember one of his roles on offense is to keep shooting those triples. If he plays out of the system, he sits. So his 26 minutes today despite shooting poorly mean that as far as the coaches are concerned, he’s been doing his job. Sometimes the effectiveness of a player is seen in the absence of stats, particularly those of the opponents.

According to a team insider, both Bader and James were hospitalized after the game. Ferdinand was not admitted, but received a prescription. Few people realize that some of our players were sick but showed up and gave it their all.

Folks, ease up on the team, and on individuals, particularly Bader. He’s just doing what the coaches ask of him, and though his performance could be better, as far as they’re concerned, he’s doing his job. Their win today against a tough Adamson team shows that the Archers are getting it together. As a team. The way they should. And a win is the cumulative effort of everyone on the team. In a close game like today’s, any error, missed fg or ft contributes to a loss, not just the last miss or error. So let’s not blame any player in particular. The team shares the blame in loss, and collectively contribute to the win. Franz does not expect his players to be perfect, but he does expect them to give their maximum effort in every game. So far, the veterans have been getting their minutes, so that says something about how they’re performing as far as the coaches are concerned. Luckily for the players, we don’t have a say in how the team is run.

  • Green Archie

Can someone ask Maui Villanueva if he purposely banked in his free throw, which proved to be the winning point.

  • Dr. Bee

I am a part of the DLSU 155th Commencement Exercise where Bader Malabes was given an Athletic Award. His name will now be part of history with the likes of Ren Ren Rituallo and Jun Limpot. Meaning, the La Sallian Community appreciated his effort in the last few years that he played in UAAP. Let us not tarnish the guy’s name with this one-game skid. There are things in the past that he had just recovered from Dengue and yet was able to push the team to the victory. Kish Co had also the same share of mistakes in the 2007 season yet look at him now, he was able to prove his worth. The point is, nobody is perfect and 100% reliable all the time. To quote Bro. Armin “Michael Jordan was expected to deliver the final basket 26 times to victory but failed and yet he learned from his mistakes and that makes him one of the true legends of basketball (DLSU 155th Commencement Exercise Souvenir program)”. The most important thing is —being a part of the La Sallian community is to KEEP THE FAITH……..in loss or in victory….in joy or in agony….the spirit of a true La Sallian. Animo La Salle!

now, where are all those people saying “UP lang kaya niyong talunin!”?

well, look at the team who beat your dream team..

now let me say “UP lang, natalo pa kayo!”

it’s a lesson.. never ever underestimate a team..

they underestimated us before.. almost all thought we would be on the bottom of the standings.. almost all thought UP is the only team we can beat.. that UP will not win against the higher rank teams..

now, look what happened.. we had our second win and UP won against the top team.. never underestimate.. as what i’ve said before “wag masyadong mataas, dahil mas masakit pag bumagsak”

well im pretty sure, they are so much in pain now..

  • ICJ

Where’s Walsham??? ‘s right. Classic Bader. throwing three point shots like throwing stones. he should be benched. good job on the part of kish co and hyram. they made the crucial shots and helped the team win. also to bringas and villanueva, they provided the inside presence the team desperately needs. i hope the winning streak continues. keep the faith!!!

    animo la salle!!!

  • Where’s Walsham???

    ICJ

Thank you! Finally someone who agrees with me. He now had an official nickname “Stone Throw” or maybe “Shotput”. Im just telling it like it is and not using my La Salle heart to clout the truth. I dont mind if he fails but come on!!! Air balls on threes?Twice? Why even try? Double dribble on the most crucial play of the game. So un-clutch. Do something else youre good at, like drive hard to the basket man! Everyone else trying to protect him saying that he was sick or whatever, please… Ive been watching DLSU games since 1995! I know when someone is good and when someone is not. Hes just not good. Play Marata. Im curious about this kid. Seems like he has it.

Dr Bee, BM has been skidding for a couple of years now. See the floor burns? Hehehe

  • Lea

    Bader Malabes was also hospitalized

  • dan

The defense is already there. It’s really the shooting they need to work on.

The sport is called BASKETball, not DEFENSEball. They gotta PUT THE BALL IN THE HOOP!

It seems like they’ve been neglecting their offense in favor of that, now ineffective press.

    SHOOT THAT BALL, guys!

  • James G

ICJ / Walsham: How about calling him a “bricklayer”? In some circles, when you can’t make a shot, they call that “tossing bricks!” Trust me, I know all about “bricklaying” since I’ve thrown up my fair share playing the game… If they aren’t dropping, you have to contribute in other ways!

  • erde tierra

DLSU managed to escaped with a win . Too bad for AdU. Also, congrats to UP

    I agree with dan/ICJ/where’s walsham.
What he brings by defense, he throws it away on offense (airballs, TOs)
I was wondering why Bader Malabes got that award instead of Rico Maierhoffer, who was also in that graduation.
Well, maybe he can do better in the next games.

    Animo La Salle!

  • Archer

Guys!!!! if the player is not good then why don’t you guys try out for the team (ICJ. where’s whalsham???) if you think the player is throwing bricks then why dont you guys try to play for the team lets see what you guys can do… stop blubbering about the mistakes of the player, your not the one who’s feeling the pressure its the players so instead of criticizing them, just lift their morals up. To the players you gys have what it takes thats why coach franz put you on the team because he believes in you. lets keep on fighting la salle all the way. ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

  • moody

i was wondering too about why rico didn’t get the athletics award. maybe bader got it because he has good grades? i think one has to maintain a certain GPA to qualify for these awards.

    go archers! animo!

  • http://pengengstresstabs.multiply.com myheartisgreen

those people who keep on saying bad things about bader or any of the archers may not be real lasallians… they may be lasallians by name but not by heart… it’s just sad to see bad comments about our players tapos dito pa mismo sa site natin… haaay… :(

  • O_o

Ok let’s get this out of the way

To everyone with the “Why don’t you try out for the team?” & “bakit hindi nalang kayo maglaro ang galing niyo pala eh” We (the critics) never said we were better. Has anyone said that “I’m better than bader, i should be the one playing?” No i dont think so. So please stop with those stupid comments already. But just incase you missed my point. That’s like saying that the people who judge gymnastics or diving or whatever have no right to give a bad score to the athletes because they cant perform better than them. Clear enough?

Now back to basketball. Great game from Kish Co, I saw H.B. take the lead during crunch time just like what a captain should do. (Even if he missed those shots and we lost, he seemed to be the only person who WANTED to shoot. So i wouldn’t hate on him) Bader nearly cost us the game (nothing new though) I hope that this game is a starting point for guys like Hyram and Kish to start producing more because they already showed they can do it once. Now they have to do it consistently. I don’t think either of them are 20something point scorers game in and game out (very few people are, especially in the collegiate ranks) I think the two of them along with Webb (hopefully, if the stars align just right) can provide a balanced scoring attack with James Mangahas. If the 4 of them can produce consistently i think we’ll be competitive in alot of games. Ofcourse if Arvie Bringas decides to score 40 points and 20 rebounds a game that would be great too. Oh and Marata should eat up more of Bader’s minutes. (not because i dislike Barua) but i think he can develop into a legit scoring threat.

  • Anakin

Good thing we won. Although it felt like the team have gotten it by going thru the eye of a needle..

special mention to hyram: keep up the confidence I’ve seen when he went up to take and made his shots.

to joel: good hustle. good defense. he appeared like really dying to get the ball.

to kish: never seen him take those shots with confidence. plus fake move to avoid defenders. (sayang yung assist sana kay ferdie, sana next game kuha na yon)

  • Where’s Walsham???

Ofcourse im a real La Sallian. Kinder 2 in LSGH until i graduated from DLSU. How bout you? I bleed green my friend. I was there during the glory days of Jun Limpot and Tony Boy, the heartbreak years of Webb-Lago-Magpantay-Telan-Patrimonio, when Dino hit the 3 pointer from heaven, when Ren Ren was King, Cool Cat was bringing the term PG to a whole new level. The comeback at the old Rizal Memorial against UST. The sweetness of the win against Ateneo and the unequalled bitterness of the loss to them the next year. Pocholo, JV, Rico. I was there. Were you? I even went to Sunday games at the ADMU gym for Gods sake. From Derrick to Virgil to Jong to Franz, i was there. So dont go off telling that i am not a La Sallian. It wasnt even called that back then but i was that.

I love the team and every year i pour my heart out every year to support them. I am excited come June because the UAAP is underway and a nervous wreck come October because La Salle is in another final four.

What i dont love is people stinking on the court. See im used to a certain excellence that comes with DLSU basketball and its so frustrating to see veterans make mental errors and crucial mistakes that they shouldnt. Its ok when rooks or 2nd year players or benchwarmers do it because they have not been entrenched in that type of pressure situation before, but a starter? A member of a past champion team?

Show us something better. We real La Sallians expect better. Show us shots that hit the rim.

    Clank!!!

  • Where’s Walsham???

    O_o

I do hope that Franz does give the Marata kid some more burn. He seems like he has potential.

  • sandalwood

an archer is always an archer…always aiming for a shot, no matter how much it cost, whether they are not feeling that good, everyone has to do its own share ones they are called to the arena..i know there are a lot of good players which at times franz is still trying to find the right mix..most of the players are members of the youth team, rookies they may be..i think they must learn how to adjust to the pressure, of a big expectant crowd, of possessing good looks that they might be conscious of…bear in mind of the school you have to fight for, just aim for the ball and the basket, never mind if the next game would be your greatest rival…hey!!!has anybody seen an eagle struck an arrow wala pa di ba???…eh di panain natin…as i have always said win or lose, the spirit moves on..ANIMO LA SALLE

  • sandalwood

dear my heart is green, talagang ganon in every show my infiltrator, my kontrabida, my gatecrasher…it is easy to detect them, its either they are trying to create a low morale than boost it, they are uplifting green spirit but in truth is dugong bughaw, or maybe into psychological warfare which will affect the performance of the players…..my advise is dont mind them di na yun makakaulit…comments here are being filtered and being posted pag approve ng site administrator…think positive…wala namang kapantay yung honor na naibigay na ng team sa school…God bless them in all their games that noone will be injured

  • TrueGreen

Well said, Where’s Walsham. Nothing wrong to expect excellence. We are talking about LA SALLE BASKETBALL, after all. The type of basketball which has always given REAL La Sallians who are real basketball fans the feeling that La Salle always has a chance of winning, whether they’re down by 5 or 15, not only because of the talent, but more importantly, because of the heart, determination, and what I’d like to call La Salle pride. Sadly, it seems some of the rookies are outplaying, out-”heart-ing” some of the veterans, but I know they’ll find a way (or I hope they do!).

I don’t think Where’s Walsham and O-o where saying anything bad against any particular player, let alone La Salle. They were simply stating facts that can’t be ignored, that shouldn’t be ignored, because knowing these WILL help the team. They’re simply being concerned La Sallians who understand the game.

  • James G

Ah, the lively debate amongst passionate fans… don’t you just love it?

  • greenhorn

To our Green Archers, just play as if you have nothing to loose and have fun. Just look at what UP did to ADMU. I observe that you are the complete opposite of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns…all defense but no offense, only for now because most of you are still greenhorns and feeling your way. But we believe in the GREEN SPIRIT and you can improve your offense slowly but surely. LIVE THE ANIMO SPIRIT!!!!

  • Archer

    Guys!!!

True La Sallians or not, Green bloded or not, La Sallian by heart or not, lets just be happy because eventhough there not from DLSU they still cheer for the team. That means alot… meaning to say the team has alot of supporters lets just pray and hope for the best for the team. To where is walsham??? i agree with you and im one of those la salite’s who followed the team year in and year out especially the heartbreak years of Webb-Lago-Magpantay-Telan-Patrimonio. I was there i was still in high school during that time(LSGH). anyway, Lets just pray for the team.To the team guys take it one step at a time the goal is to win every game that you’ll be playing then once we get back on our winning ways next goal is the final four and everything will flow just like water.. KEEP THE FAITH!!! AN1MO LA SALLE!!!

  • Mr. Nice Guy

The standings right now are mirrored from top to bottom.

  • ICJ

    Archer,

easy lang, I don’t hate bader, i just hate it when he turns the ball over and shoot airballs, especially in the crucial part of the game! I am one of those la sallians that still believe the team can win it all, even the championship!

we’re in the same side, I am just saying my opinion.

    peace man..

    Keep the faith!
    Animo La Salle!!

  • http://6spirits.multiply.com SHST

u guys should learn how to keep your opinions to yourself and learn how to shut up.
your not on the team, they are. so you dont know anything and you dont understand as well.
try out for the team if you think you can do better than they do, i dont think Coach Franz will even give u a shot!
remember that the team are full of ROOKIES, therefore the VETERANS are under pressure. do u guys even know how it feels to be pressured at all?
you keep on criticizing and opening your mouths as if your not fans. if you are stay loyal and keep the faith, as they all say. if you have nothing better else to say, again SHUT UP!
Bader deserves the award because he has earned it, and he has high grades. are you even questioning the people who gave him the award?? u guys are so jealous.
and havent you realized what other aspects he has contributed for the team? he does his job very well and people make mistakes. dont you?
stop singling out and criticizing them because they dont need that! again, if you think u are better than some of the players GO AHEAD AND TRY MAKING IT TO THE TEAM.
PROVE YOURSELF FIRST BEFORE EVEN TALKING AT ALL and making those stupid remarks.

  • Archer

Enough of this… Guys lets just keep the faith and hope for the betterment of the school’s community and for the team. anyway everybody is entitled to their own opinion, i know bader makes allot of errors for the team, but lets just be optimistic that he will still shine for the team. ICJ, its ok pare no harm done i know your just expressing your thoughts and opinions. SHST relax everybody is cheering the team, everybody wants the team to WIN. So again lets all keep the faith,

La Salle all the way BABY!!!

  • Proud Archer

Appreciate basketball as a game. After all, that’s just what it is. No use flaring up your tempers, specially amongst us La Sallites. We support the same team.
Going back to basketball as a game, you have strategies to think about, and different strategies for different opponents. Thus every game has a different complexion, because coaches try to out think each other. I was a member of the De La Salle Chess Club and a member of the varsity team. Probably this is why I enjoy basketball by watching it from a technical and strategical standpoint, not just emotional (I DO get emotional at the games mind you!!!)
Those often maligned players of ours (Bader, Maui, James), are the same players that have given us wins in the past haven’t they?
The beauty about all La Salle basketball teams in the past was that when there was no dominant scorer in the team, the offense is more dangerous because the other team doesn’t know where it will come from right? Case in point: Kish Co.
Kish Co is also one of those players whom we criticize.
My point is, we win ore lose as one, with the material we have.
Let me raise a question for you to ponder on. If we win a championship this year with this much maligned team that we have now, wouldn’t it be sweeter???? Wishfull thinking??? YOU BET. Animo!!!!!!

  • Nel

Aha, a chess player! Very analytical, with the ability to see beyond the superficial moves and smokescreens, because it’s crucial to discern what’s the real motive or plan. No wonder you can retain that equanimity in the light of the team’s performance in the first few games. Chess players are very familiar with the role of tactics and how they fit into the overall strategic plan. Tactics and strategy, gambits, traps. Chess terms, which, if you think about them, can describe how the coaches are handling this year’s campaign. With a lot of rookies (pawns) and not many major pieces, it’s important to utilize the pieces productively up to the end game. Will we see a pawn promoted before the season ends?

Chess players are used to having to not having quick wins, because they always respect their opponents across the board. So they plan for the long haul, prepare for the moves and counter moves, and think so many moves in advance. Not many people would take the first 2 losses and “ugly” win over Adamson without despairing about the fate of this year’s campaign. Our coaches are surely planning to get into the final 4, and I suspect, thinking of how they might get to the championship. For now, it’s a matter of getting into the best possible position to reach the end game. In another sport, the season can be likened to a distance race, not a sprint. It really doesn’t matter who leads early or midway as long as you get to the finish line first. I suspect that’s the method behind the madness.

The first 2 games, both losses, were what I would call “sacrifice” or gambit moves, to feel out how the team would respond, probe the weaknesses and start fixing them. The objective was to prepare for the end game, not win the early exchanges. So a game or two were “sacrificed” so that the coaches know what they can expect from the team and the individual players in their current state and address what needs fixing. And use these games to scout the competition – remember that we went up against 2 of the toughest teams in UE and FEU. Better to lose to them early and beat them later when it really matters.

A loss or setback sometimes teaches you more than early success would. That’s why our teams very rarely hit the ground running, yet they always manage to land in the final 4 and most often actually do figure in the championship race. Strategic thinking – that’s what we sometimes fail to see in how our coaches manage the campaign. As Covey says, “Begin with the end in mind”.

It took an athlete from a different sport to point out what the coaches are doing! Great analysis, Proud Archer!

  • sandalwood

hey guys, let’s just uplift the animo spirit, let us look the team as a team carrying the name of the school, for sure they are the pride of DLSU…i love the team as a team, whoever the player may be, still is part of the team…it is not easy to represent the school, but i guess harder to be an expectator…am having goose bumps especially during the last quarter when my team is losing, at times i feel my heart stops…but i still went on watching and cheering for the archers….i feel depressed when noone is boosting the morale of the players not even the cheering squad, nor can i hear drums beating……this adds more to the frustration of the players…i still believe that each one is doing their own share as a team, i give credit the most to the coaches…i love watching the archers play and how they carry on the game with all honesty in the spirit of fair play and clean game, i enjoy watching the players enjoy the games…bonus na lang para sa akin if they will win…Godbless them that noone will be hurt, even with the opponents, in every game……ANIMO LASALLE!!!!!!!!

  • Archer

I completely agree with Nel and proud archer, we have a very young team and we really don’t have a king archer like before we had mac-mac, ren ren, yeo, ty tang, JV and rico, what we have is a team that can deliver as a whole. To proud archer yes it will be sweet if we win the championship this year. A1NIMO LA SALLE!!! lets KEEP THE FAITH!!!

  • green matsin

With passionate fans like these, we’ll be rest assured that the Animo Spirit will Live on! We may not agree on some points, but in the end, we would still cheer for our beloved Alma Mater.

Who would’ve thought La Salle would win a championship after being suspended the previous year? – this is the reason why we love our basketball, the team plays with all heart. From the opening tip up to the last second, the team plays ‘in your face’ defence. The players may not convert all the time, but what’s important is to come back at defence at once! If i were a coach, I would be happy if my team plays like that, win or lose, because i know that my players played their best.
I would rather see 5-6 players getting 8pts each than having 1 player scoring 40pts because in the end, basketball IS a TEAM game. I salute Franz for being able to squeeze all the potentials from the players, even from the rookies. He is indeed a great tactician.

Fearless Forecast = the Archers have yet to peak, but I’m dead sure that they will be in the Final Four!

    ANIMO LA SALLE!
