Pregame Bullets: DLSU vs ADMU

First, here are some additional notes from last Sunday’s game from our very own Andrew Tan

  • During the postgame interview last Sunday, coach Franz said his boys were motivated from an earlier statement made by UST coach Pido Jarencio that weak teams like UP, NU and La Salle can beat the stronger ones. “At least we were able to prove that a weak team like us can indeed beat a strong team.” he said as a jibe.
  • Coach Franz also praised the team for their gallant effort especially Peejay Barua for his clutch baskets in overtime. “The guys didn’t quit. Even when UST made that run, we still stuck to the game plan and luckily we still managed to win.”
  • He also acknowledged the La Salle faithful who cheered relentlessly even when the team was down by a huge deficit. “Guys, I love what I saw kanina, everybody, you were trying to urge the crowd to cheer. I love that! That’s what we need; we need a little fighting spirit within ourselves, a little morale boosting.” he said to his players at the dugout. “Yung mga wishful thinking na we will not be successful will backfire on them, what is important like what I have been telling you is that I trust you and I believe in each and everyone of you that is why you are wearing that uniform.” he further said.
  • To close his pep talk, he said these inspiring words “I don’t care what they say. As long as we play together, as long as we play this hard each game, as long as we compete, we will make everyone happy and we will be successful.”

And now on to the much-awaited showdown against Ateneo

  • A lot of die-hards feel that the Archers will have difficulties winning in a high-scoring match. The team is known for its hard-nosed full court press but in last Sunday’s game against UST, they allowed the Tigers to score a bunch of points. True, the Archers won, but it was a shootout, and that’s not the way the Archers will win. The Blue Eagles had enough firepower and a good enough defense to win against the teams they’ve played so far.
  • Let’s take a look at their record against final 4 contenders FEU, UE, and UST. Against FEU (first game), they won in a low scoring game, 63-59. When they played UE, they put more points on the board and held UE to just 57. UST managed to get to 77 with their high octane defense, but allowed Ateneo to score 92. Against these 3 teams, the Blue Eagles averaged 76 points and allowed the opponents to score only 64. Tthey’re obviously paying attention to their defense.
  • Our offense has been inconsistent. In our first 4 games (UE, FEU, UP, ADU), we averaged only 58.5 points, with a high of 73 against UP. Clearly the 101 points we scored against UST is par for the course against the Tigers, because the porous defense of UST has given up more points (89.2) than they score (88.2).
  • Our average score for the full 40 minutes of a regulation game (counting our score at the end of regulation against UST-82) is 63.2. This is close to what Ateneo allows their opponents to score. Our outside shooting has been on-and-off. If we can’t connect from the long court, Ateneo will simply pack the paint and dare us to hit it from outside. Any lane incursions will be met by lots of flapping wings (attempted shot blocks) of the elongated frontline. Our guard corps (Simon, Hyram, Bader) does have a bit of a height advantage over the opposing pgs, so it remains to be seen if they will be allowed some isolation sets on offense inside the paint.
  • The Blue Eagles are the defending champs, and boast of a solid lineup they carried over from last year. They’re strong in all areas: inside game, outside shooting, penetration. They guard the paint jealously, pride themselves on their shotblocking ability, and rely on Al Husseini, Salva and Baclao to score inisde. Any careless ball handling or passing is likely to be punished by Salamat and his group of thieving guards. Our perimeter defense will likewise be tested by slashers Buenafe, Salamat, and their “points guards” who like to shoot from outside.
  • So, if our offense continues to be inconsistent (worst case scenario), we won’t win UNLESS we put a lid on the Ateneo goal through honest, tough, unrelenting, 40-minute defense. Our coaches have proven that they’re good strategists, so expect them to plan for the worst case scenario as Plan A. That’s defense. Plan B? Sure to be defense also. and Plan C? Again based on defense. Expect the Archers to have different defensive looks during the game, which they will vary often. This changeup will try to prevent the Blue Eagles from settling into a rhythm, try to keep them under pressure and off balance throughout the game. A low scoring game is in our favor; the high flying Eagles are not used to being forced to fly close to the ground where they are vulnerable to the arrows of the Green Archers. Heck, at low altitude, a slingshot (or even a made free throw or two???) could bring them down.
  • Lastly, Ateneo will try to get into the heads of the players. The key is to maintain the concentration, stay with the plan, and avoid being distracted by the antics and faces (sorry, couldn’t help that) of the opponents.
  • We’re definitely the underdogs in this game. But we have a chance. Focus. Concentration. Intensity. Composure. Heart. Above all, defense.

KEEP THE FAITH!

    Animo La Salle!!

    Play with heart guys!!

    I like this statement:
“low scoring game is in our favor; the high flying Eagles are not used to being forced to fly close to the ground where they are vulnerable to the arrows of the Green Archers. Heck, at low altitude, a slingshot (or even a made free throw or two???) could bring them down.”

I guess we really have to put pressure on Ateneo’s offense, but we should not settle on low shooting percentage because our defense will be useless if we cannot even score.

  • carlos

Are we supposed to wear yellow on Sunday?

  • Nel

    @carlos,

We have enough scorers and shooters in our arsenal, and after 6 games, the team has essentially adjusted already, so the offense should not be a problem. Our outside shooting will be important; in the pre-season game against Ateneo where we beat them, our 3point shots were hitting the mark, and the Blue Eagles had difficulty because their defense was so spread out. The team has to maintain their focus and concentration, be patient and play within the system, follow the game plan and not give in to the hoopla and excitement of the event. If they play the way that the coaches are setting up, we should have an even chance at winning the game.

  • dis

I noticed Franz sometimes likes to run low-post plays for Bagatsing against smaller pointguards. I expect to see that quite often on Sunday, when he’s matched up against midgets Jai Reyes and Monfort.

  • kyo

we could win against ateneo for some reasons..
    they were a eagle…
    and we are d archers
are arrows will penetrate on the eagles skin
as long as we do team work and d animo! power!
    lets do this!

    ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

“The key is to maintain the concentration, stay with the plan, and avoid being distracted by the antics and faces (sorry, couldn’t help that) of the opponents.”

Hahahaha.. Mukha ni Salamat tska ngiti ni Raba.. ~_~

  • carlos

Thanks for the explanation Nel! I based my assertion on their shooting performance in their previous games with FEU and UE. Might have overlooked other stats. Anyway, is it true that we are encouraged to wear yellow on Sunday, as a sign of respect to the late former President Cory Aquino?

  • Nel

Carlos, the first 2 games were more “feeling out” games. After all, almost 50% of the team is new. We do have a lot of shooters, and once they gain their confidence, it will be difficult to defend against the long shot. Our accuracy has improved markedly in the last 2 games, except for our fts. On the color for Sunday, yes there have been calls to wear yellow, but it’s really a personal choice. Some supporters plan to come in yellow, some will be in green.

  • ICJ

I hope this season won’t be a repeat of the last.. 0-4 against Ateneo. Ang sakit alalahanin. But of course, win or lose, Lasallians will always be there to support the team!!! Believe!
    KEEP THE FAITH!!!
    ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

  • Japs

We’re behind you! Go get out there and show your Animo!

  • James G

Throw out the stats when La Salle and Ateneo meet! It doesn’t matter if one team hasn’t lost a game and another hasn’t won a game leading up to the tiff, both teams have so little love for each other that it’ll be a royal brawl from start to finish!

If I could address the team before the game, I would remind them that according to everyone, Ateneo has pretty much won this game and all the Ateneans have to do is show up and it’s over! I’d stress the fact that they have no respect for us because we have a team that’s young and are considered luckier than good and should be grateful to share the court with such baskeball royalty! I’d ask them to leave everything they have out on that court on that day and finish with a completely empty tank and never to give in or give up no matter what is going on around them. I’d ask for divine guidance but remind the young men that god will help those who help themselves so they have to make it happen. Finally, I’d ask them to do one thing for me: have fun. If you enjoy what you do then you’re going to do it well, so it’s important the remind the lads to go out there and have fun because events like this don’t happen all the time and there’s never a gurantee that you’ll be healthy the next time so enjoy it now!

  • LBJ

guys, there’s a lasalle-ateneo special on Halikinu radio. Tune in to NU 107 tonight at 9pm. Richard del Rosario, Magoo Marjon, and George Rocha will slug it out with the peeps from katipunan.
    animo!

  • veronica annette

We will win the game as long as you guys keep your faith in your hearts…stick with the game plan, and play with your heart out…..Animo!!!

  • greenhorn

Always remember that they are in anyway NO BETTER THAN US. The odds are always even in ALL La Salle-Ateneo basketball game. Forget about what happened last season. The true color of an Archer’s heart is GREEN and will never and ever be BLUE. So Archers, prepare yourselves to VICTORY and show them what green stuff we are made of!!!

  • Proud Archer

Go La Salle!!!! Let’s trust our defense. That is the ONLY weapon we have that will beat Ateneo, or any team for that matter. Don’t look at missed shots. Don’t look at missed free throws (although this is frustrating at times :-D ). Pay attention to the little things on defense (e.g. tapping the ball out and where was it tapped out). This is actually a set up for a defensive stop. I actually cheer loud for plays like these.
Pay attention to allowing just one shot, defensive rebounding, loose ball recoveries, steals and interceptions, jumpballs (possession arrows come into play here except for the last two minutes), diving for the ball, taking the charge, and overall hustle plays that don’t show up in the stats.
If you see La Salle do well and win out in these areas, I guarantee, we can win, even if we struggle offensively.
That is the beauty of defense. It’s two-way. It doesn’t allow the other team to score and it’s our set-up for our offense at the same time. One thing more. Our defense NEVER rests.
The UST game was very important to us going into the Ateneo game. It showed the players that they can come back from huge deficits in late game situations. It showed that we do have offensive options. It showed that we have concentration. And most importantly, it showed that when we relied on offense, we almost lost the ballgame in regulation. With defense, we only allowed two points in the second overtime to win pulling away.
So which way is the winning way??? DEFENSE!!!!!!
    Animo!!!!!!!!

  • cool dude

Has anybody forgot to practice their free throws? This is so important especially in close games, at least make it 80 to 85% most of the time…and be prepared for a battle!ANIMO!!!

  • engineered_levi

I might wear yellow OVER my green shirt! Para handa heheh

  • r3x

its sad how they think they just have to be there and its over!!lets show them the stuff we’re made of!Beating the tigers proved our wins are no joke!its not tsamba anymore:-)

  • Papant

Nice citation for Andrew Tan! (Oh no!)

Faces… hmmm a picture of the whole team especially their coach comes to my mind.

Anyway, the team should be very cautious for Salamat who is well known for his arrogant and an uneducated attitude. A replay of the exchange of blows might happen again just like last Sunday. We don’t want to give them free throws just because of the temper. I would like to see Bringas annihilate rabeh. Webb to block Baclao and shout in front of him. Marata to shoot 3 pointers right in front of Monfort. AND SHOOT SOME ACCURATE FREE THROWS!

  • http://livejournal.com/strokes_of_wit Gelo

Can’t wait for Sunday’s game! I wanna wear green of course to show some pride in our school but if they’re makin an issue out of the yellow shirt thing then I’ll bring one just in case. Still wearing green though if I had a choice. Not to say I’m disrespecting Cory. Nothing like that. It’s just that I think this one’s taking it a bit too far. We’ve done enough to honor her haven’t we? I think it’s time to let it go. It’s been a great life she’s lived, giving it all up for our people. I salute her. But come on. Why at a DLSU-ADMU game? Why skip the other games just to make it a point to somehow twist our celebrated rivalry match? Badtrip na nga that the game this time around’s the opener (game starts at 1pm wtf). Guys sana you don’t take this wrongly but I believe wearing yellow or not this Sunday won’t really be the measure of how much you’ve appreciated and honor the former president. That said, may she RIP. She will never be forgotten. Now onto the GAME! Good luck to both teams and may the best squad win in what’s sure to be another epically awesome match.

    ANIMO La Salle!

Have fun tomorrow fellow La Sallites. Remember, tomorrow is just a game and sheer entertainment for all of us. If we don’t do well tomorrow, don’t crucify our players. Strategies and execution do fail sometimes.
This is not a set up statement for a loss though. I expect a very very very competitive game tomorrow. The team we have right now is strong enough to beat any team, Ateneo included. We just have to rely on our strengths and exploit Ateneo’s weaknesses. So far, our team has over-achieved, hasn’t it? My bold prediction? Watch out for Yutien “Tayshawn Prince” Andrada. This could be his break-out game. Together with Arvie, they will be in a slugfest with their former San Sebastian teammates, Salamat and Buenafe.
    Expect a lot of taunting.
To the players, don’t give in to this. They will try to exploit your youth and inexperience to get into your heads to elicit a bad game. Counter them with your youthful and strong execution of the La Salle defense you are now familiar with. Counter them with your spunk, hustle, grit and determination. Never say die.
Putting everything in perspective, let’s honor the memory of Cory Aquino. So far, she has proven to be the ONLY trustworthy President in recent history. Honor her memory with a good, clean game. But we will try our very best to win. Lift the team’s spirit up guys. Lets cheer ANIMO ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!

La Salle played a great game. But the Heart, the Defense, and Keeping the Faith were all with the Blue Eagles when it mattered the most. A greater game for Ateneo.

  • manoy64

4 points behind is not bad for a team dominated mostly by rookies.

    Animo LaSalle!

    We stretched it into OT.

There’s no denying that DLSU is a worthy opponent and a potential contender in the finals.

We beat the eagles by a point in the preseason.

They beat us by 4 — sunday aug 9 ’09 in overtime.
