Postgame Bullets: DLSU 78 UP 83

  • The Green Archers are slowly digging a hole so deep that if they do not get their act soon, it would be extremely hard for them to get out and target the last final 4 slot.
  • This was another first, a 4-game losing streak. The Archers’ record is now a 4-6. For them to make the final 4, they will now have to sweep the remaining 4 games. This is going to be a difficult task, because 3 of the next opponents are FEU, UE, and UST.
  • Missing in action in today’s disappointing loss were Simon Atkins, who was nursing an injury, and the team’s defense. UP had a field day especially from the perimeter where they shot a 31% from beyond the arc. The Maroons just had too many good looks at the basket.
  • Again, an opponent exploited their knowledge of the Archer defense to find the open shooter on the perimeter. Former Zobel player de Asis was the recipient of a couple of open looks which he sank, to the dismay of the green supporters. The vulnerability of the Archer defense to good ballhandlers was also very evident, with Reyes, Padilla, and Lopez penetrating from the outside, and they either managed to get a free layup because the secondary defense was a step slow, or if the post defender switched, the open man underneath would get the drop pass.
  • To add insult to injury, it was a former La Salle high school standout that did most of the damage to the Archers. Mikee Reyes, who played for LSGH in the NCAA had a monster game with 25 points and 6 assists. He was like a blur running past his defenders and was hot from the outside. How unfortunate that his breakout game had to be at our expense. His performance reminded some observers of a young Iverson.
  • Of UP’s “lost boys”, only Maui performed well today. Joel and Sam saw limited action today.

Bakit hindi napunta sa atin si Mikee Reyes? My brother kept on mentioning “the answer” whenever that guy makes some sleek move. And he said that he was referring to that Iverson. Was that Iverson really that great? I am really intrigued…

  • johni

‘no defense’ did it for the team today. the opposition seems to read well the la salle set plays in the last four games. is it time for coach franz to re-visit his system or his boys were just unable to execute his strategies? still hoping for the animo best.

  • http://yahoo.com ricky

we are running out of games….and excuses. Maybe its time to stop daydreaming and face reality. Let the rookies play for the remainder of the season to build their confidence. Maybe its a blessing in disguise that our beloved coach franz is seeking a higher position…

  • ANTI MVP

come on guys, this is really the worst performance of a season we could ever have?..and what possible offer can UP have for mr reyes to turn his back on his green shirt?..does the prospect of an education payed by my taxes appeal more than an education of our dear old alma mater?

  • http://greenarchers.ph archers

I really think that we should have taken Mikee Reyes instead of Joel Tolentino. Joel is slow and not that impressive on brining the ball down.

  • vedasto padilla

FAITH. OUR TIME WILL COME. PLAYERS COME AND GO. IT TOOK US TIME TO HAVE THE DUO OF BACHMANN AND SEVILLIANO/LIM ENG BENG MIGUEL BILBAO AND JULIE LIM. ACCEPT THE SCENARIO AND MOVE ON. WE NEED PATIENCE,PRACTICE AND FAITH IN OUR TEAM. WE MAY NOT HAVE THE CHAMPIONSHIP WHEN YOU GUYS GRADUATE BUT YOU WILL BE AROUND WHEN THE TIME COMES TO WIN. I DID NOT HAVE THE BENEFIT OF BACK TO BACK BUT I EXPERIENCE A CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. REMEMBER THE WORDS WILL FIGHT TO KEEP OUR GLORY HIGH AND BRIGHT AND NEVER SHALL WE FAIL., AND THATS WHAT WE ARE DOING RIGHT NOW.ANIMO

DISAPOINTING! Ang lalambot nila. I hope LA SALLE Basketball will get back soon…. Kinda sad really for the glory of Taft.

  • ilena arnaiz

Di raw yata priority si Mikee eh. But I guess there were a lot of parameters. Turnover-prone? Always on gigil-mode? I mean, seriously, Tolentino’s more stable than this guy. Explosive nga lang si Mikee kung minsan. I’m still reeling at the fact na we’ll be missing the Final 4 for the first time…

  • Grenoble

More of the same. We pretty well know how this Green Archer team is… disorganized, tentative, headless. We may not even make Tony Atayde’s pre-season prediction of a 7-7 record this year. Where did things go wrong? Recruitment, physical conditioning, coaching, chemistry, exposure, etc.

  • Catch

Watching the game yesterday was disappointing. Mukhang tinatamad na sila maglaro and it’s so sad to see that. I hope they can gain back the fighting spirit that I’m sure they’re capable of. It just may another first when we don’t make it to Final 4. Ang weird. I haven’t lost HOPE just yet. Impossible things happen in the UAAP and in basketball, but I’ll be ready to accept it if that is our fate. There’s always next year. :) I have a very good feeling that we can crush everybody by then. haha

  • O_o

I was only able to watch from the 2nd quarter onwards but I didn’t see much of Arvie Bringas, is he injured or something? Or punished from taking too many 3 pointers last game?

  • Mac

What can we say, “ano ba naman ang ginawa natin guys” coach franz said during a time out. The biggest problem this season is the switching on defense. Yun lang, and also lack of ANIMO spirit. Thats the most important thing for us.

  • Ray Green

Win or lose, I choose the school! I take pride in DLSU.
But it’s hard to take pride in this team.

  • green minded

maybe they are not that motivated.wala talaga kasing leader itong team.bagatsing should not be the captain ball of the team.i dont think none are deserving to be the captain in this batch of veterans.they are just not really into the game…no passion and no spirit.a captain ball or the veterans should set examples for the rookies to follow.i just dont see that in them.sorry guys.just an opinion lang on how i see things.but there are still some games left.maybe they will play better in the succeeding games.if UP can beat teams like ateneo and la salle,i think our team can also make some upset wins against FEU, UST and UE.dont lose hope.keep on cheering lang.win or lose,la salle pa din… :)
    animo la salle… :)

  • http://n/a ch10

With the kind of performance yesterday, DLSU has very slim chances of getting a Final Four spot. UP showed a lot of talent yesterday but they still cannot show how to finish games just like when they lost a game against UST. UP gave DLSU a lot of opportunities but the Archers did not take advantage of taking control of the game. They clearly lack proficiency in defense, ball handling, and most importantly executing plays. They also show that there are no roles set for each player. The coaching system of Franz Pumaren is not fitting his players and you can see it in their games. In the NBA, if a team is not playing well, fingers are always pointed to the coaching staff of a team and immediately the head coach gets replaced by a new one with another kind of coaching system. Hopefully in the coming years, the new coach would instill a very “disciplined/hindi larong-buko” system to the Archers and each player has an idea of their specific role in the team. Hearing Pumaren saying: “ano ba naman ang ginagawa natin guys” simply means that there is a big problem in the team. Siguro nga may next year pa, pero if you look at the players today, very talented diba? Hindi maipakita? Bakit kaya? Bat ganyan sila maglaro? Hearing people saying “Puro rookies pa kasi eh.” is true pero hindi ba naglaro na rin naman ung mga players sa ibang league? The clear answer kahit na masakit sabihin is “Coach kasi eh hindi madisiplina ung players niya.” Agree kayu or diasgree? What do you think? For the coaching staff, sorry if i opened this topic.

  • ANIMO!

LA SALLE PRESS.. wont work anymore cause teams in the uaap have been used to it.. though it worked once against UST…

@ch10 yeah your right there’s a big chance that the coaching staff is the reason for this… pero para sa akin ang kawalan ng stable pointguard ng team ang dahilan.. all of those pgs we are putting right now is not a true point guard.. especially malabes,atkins,bagatsing.. they are SGs/SFs
KAYA PA YAN! HAVE FAITH! ANIMO LASALLE

  • scuderia

why is that when a team isn’t winning it always has to be the a fault of someone? the rookie, the veteran, the coaching staff heck why not blame the ball boys as well? stop being stupid and accept the fact that there are better teams in the uaap right now!

the solution is to improve as a team! hope this comes sooner than later. perhaps next season they could mix it up better with the others!

    Animo!

  • http://n/a ch10

@scuderia the archers are simply losing their games because they are not playing well and basado na ang plays ni pumaren. Call me stupid, pero sana naman you provided a concrete solution. How to improve as a team?

@ANIMO! i agree with your suggestion. awts talaga pang hindi ok ang playmakers. Pero, wala kasing special connection between pumaren and simon atkins.. simon atkins played extremely well when he was in his high school years. laki nga ng expectations from him before eh.. siguro naman you can imply what i mean sa mga sinabi ko.

Call me stupid at magalit na kayo sakin, but i COULD be right. Ung mga comments ok ay binabase ko lang sa facts.

  • sh3rwin

i believe in Coach Franz.. the team just needs to work harder, play harder and be confident. We loss because they were afraid, this is the time where the team needs a leader- who everyone respects and looks up to!

Adjustment period lang tayo this year, we still got to support our team. If and when we win, its all gona be sweeter for us! Lets enjoy the games and support our DLSU!!

  • O_o

@ ch10 – wow big statement there man, calling out our coaching staff. But I agree that you do have a point. The dreaded lasalle press isn’t as dreaded as it used to be. The plays have been scouted well already by the other teams. We need to come up with new plays or new offensive patterns. I think our coaching staff can do it. Now that Dindo Pumaren is here with franz maybe they can borrow some of Dindo’s plays on offense. I don’t think we should replace our coaching staff since in my not so educated opinion Franz is Pumaren is the Red Aurbach of the UAAP.

at the lack of a true point guard arguement. I agree with that 100% (sorry Joel Tolentino) other than Simon Atkins (who is a great playmaker but can’t quite hit the outside shot consistently) we dont have another PG we can rely on.

Wait before I forget. Barua showed up in this game and played well. Good job PJ. Yun lang seg-way lang :) ) Sige si James Mangahas na din kahit napalpal ni Lopez he still had that in your face long 2 pointer nung 4th quarter. :D Good job by the two

***Mod’s note: we deleted part of your comment. We will not tolerate any derogatory comments about the ethnicity of any person***

  • http://n/a ch10

@sh3rwin in order for a team to work harder, play harder, and to have move confidence, it isnt only the job of the players but also one of the primary roles of the coaching staff.

You have a good point dun sa leadership. As much as possible, kahit wala talagang leader, at least man lang ginagawa sana ng mga players ung role nila. Leadership by example ika nga. Makikita mo yun kasi very inconsistent ang archers this season. Broken plays pa minsan para lang maka-score ng points. Pansin nyu, seldom lang nirereplay ung mga plays ng dlsu?

Nega ako. Just being a critic.:) Animo!

  • banemalr

I still believe in coach Franz! I think were we went wrong… is because we wanted to show team spirit… hence, most of our players now are role players. We don’t want to recruit blue chip playes anymore. But if we look at Ateneo, they have Rabeh, Kirk Long. With a line up only of Buenafe and Baclao, they won’t dominate. We need to bring back our recruitment system. Recruit the likes of Don Allado, Ren Ren, Cortez, Cardona… Every year during those days, we had a ‘scoring machine’ entering as a rookie… an Mvp player…Someone who is not afraid to say…’Give me the ball and I’ll deliver’

  • banemalr

Recruitment system that is legal lang… not wasting our efforts in gatchalian, etc.. hehe…

But at the end…ANimo still to coach Franz… he is still the best coach for Lasalle. But ‘if we need to get’ very ambitious & high ego players… sometimes.. we need to… because they are the players who have the winning mindset. Someone who is very competitive at their inner core. I guess I’m finding someone like Cardona or Cortez!

  • ICJ

Our team still has a chance. UST lost today. We must win our remaining games to make it to the f4. In this game, UP wanted to win more than our team did. They deserved it. And in this game our veterans showed up, barua, mangahas and malabes. The rest did not show enough support. Let’s just hope coach franz can still pull a bunny out of his magic hat.

    BELIEVE!!!!

  • mojito

panapanahon lang yan. Our time will come its just not this season. The team is a work in progress I just hope we don’t end this season in total embarassment

  • gc

@ch10: bakit naman ganyan kayo kay coach franz. bakit parang kinakalimutan na yung mga nabigay nia noon sa team at sa buong dlsu community?…. hindi ba dapat buong team ang sisihin at hindi lang isang tao?… well hindi talaga siguro ngayon ang lucky year ng dlsu but i dont think coach franz should get the blame for it. we all know him and we know kung ano ang kaya niyang gawin. sana wag natin kalimutan yung mga gnawa nia for the past 11 years…. siguro nga may mali pero i dont think kasalanan lang nia lahat.

  • carlos

Let’s not lose our hopes. Hindi man time ng La Salle men’s basketball team ngayon, I know we could make it next season. We cannot really expect much from a rookie team this time, but I know they could be the best next season. Guys, don’t forget our women’s and juniors team!

  • http://n/a ch10

Dont get me wrong,I’m referring but to the coaching system TODAY. Again, Basado na kasi.

Magaling na coach si franz pumaren no wonder. He brought the archers to championships and such. Kaso there are times na you have to part ways for the benefit of the team. I2 ung stand ko from the start of the topic. The team is under a 4 game losing streak. “baka pa mga umabot ng 5 or more”

Sorry talaga if i am too offensive and subjective, but i just opened this topic kasi wala akong magawa and i would like to share my comments.

I just tried comparing the situation of the archers into the context of the NBA. “na kahit anu pang galing ng coach, pag hindi satisfied ang general managers, most likely the coach gets replaced” i.e (Mike d’antoni and Avery Johnson) baka kasi maaply 2 sa situation ng archrers.

Di bale na nga lang, I will just close this topic. Sorry for being subjective. Sincere Apologies to the coaching staff more particularly to Coach Franz Pumaren.

Kaya pa nga yan ng DLSU pero ewan ko lang this season. “Collective Effort” is needed from the team. Yan ung lumabas nung nanalo sila sa UST eh. For the players, listen to your coach and execute well. Make all of your fans proud of you!

  • bleedgreen

When Season 72 started I have already set my mind that our team is in a rebuilding mode.
I am not really expecting a lot of wins for this team this season. There is obviously an ongoing transition of roles and assignments from the veteran players to the newer ones. I guess this transition will hopefully be evident when the team plays out their remaining games in the elimination round.

  • To ch10

@ch10: I totally disagree with you blaming a huge part of it to the coaching staff. I think your so called facts are not credible. You criticize like as if you know it all and hundred percent sure about it, BASADO as you may say. Like you can accurately read everything. Blaming Coach Franz for not bringing the best out of Simon is a laughingstock. What special connection are you talking about? I think you overlooked Webb’s awesome performance this season who also played very well during his high school. As you can see, he still is that great DLSZ player who bagged the championship during his last year. I just think that the player himself is greatly responsible for his own performance.
PS: You might want to compare UAAP to PBL or PBA first before NBA. Each has its own system so deal with.

  • painkillaz

Nasa transition period pa kasi ang La Salle. Offensive patterns have been erratic and predictable. Alam mo na agad na kung si Malabes or Barua ang may hawak ng bola ay ititira agad sa labas coming from a screen from Mangahas or Mendoza. Webb always goes for the drive coming from the right side. Bringas is quite slow on low post kaya naagawan agad kapag nag-double team ang kalaban.

Remember 2 years ago, FEU and ADMU had a bunch of rookies. Many FEU and UE players gained more experience playing in the PBL. Unlike DLSU, si Mangahas & Barua lang ang may PBL experience.

Give these guys some time to know each other and who knows DLSU will reclaim the crown next year.

Next year, ADMU will be decimated to a small team with no legitimate center. I think teams to watch in the future will be UST and LA SALLE given more basketball trainings and exposures in different leagues.

I suggest Sam Marata or Arvie Bringas to be the next team captain. Joel Tolentino is another option.

  • blade runner

why not try Mendoza getting the boards and everyone box out or challenge? He had 10 last Saturday. Barua should be set up well… provide some screens for him… I think Webb should wait for drive and dish passes and pointguards should make great decisions in handling each possession…

  • banemalr

Ch10… btw comparing management and coaching staffs are two different issues. Kerr firing d’Antoni is a wrong management decision and not a coaching staff error. Look at where it brought the suns. And if Management listens to critics like this, i hope they don’t listen to bad advices like this. At the end of the day, it is the erros that needs to be resolved. and not the blame on a person.

  • ANIMO!

In some cases tama ung cnabi ni ch10.. remember what NORMAN BLACK said about us after our losses to them.. sinabi nia na that their team(eagles) are already prepared for the kind of defense the archers will give.. then he also said that bakit ginagamit pa rin nila ung mga plays n un eh pa-ulit ulit n nilang ginagamit un laban sa amin(eagles)

(interpretation ko lang ito from what i’ve saw on the interview of norman black – sorry kung medyo iba.. yan lang kasi ung natatandaan at naintindihan ko )

  • GO FIGHT LASALLE!

i believe the there is a problem as a whole.. from the coaching staff to the players..
what i like to point out about it: Coaching staff cant make better/new plays that will shock other teams para kasing action movie ung nangyayari.. masyadong predictable ang ginagawa ng mga players nila both on the offensive and defensive side.. sa mga napanood ko this season kahit ako alam ko ang susunod n gagawin ng mga archers i.e. pasa kay webb then drive.. full court press that wont work anymore.. another thing about the coaching staff they always put incosistent players/veterans on court who got a lot of time to prove themselves but didn’t do so.. pero palagi pa rin pinapasok.. idk why.. Sa Players: VERY INCOSISTENT.. kahit mga rookies ngayon nawawala n rin(except webb:D) like bringas and marata.. Next is UNFINISHED PLAYS.. maraming times n nagagawa nga nila ung play(kahit sobrang tagal) like finding the open man pero ang nangyayari miss fg.. which is basic basketball you just have to make that ball into the net.. which leads to the next problem: FIELD GOAL%/freethrows.. ngayon ko lang nakita lasalle n ganyan para bang ang laro nila ay nde basketball kundi volleyball because their shoot just to hit the ring not the NET.. di ba dapat yan ang top priority sa basketball.. is to train to shoot that ball?.. PLAYSx0%FG=Opts. pa-ulet-ulet kasi and i know kita nio yan..
pero what the heck fans/supporters lang tayo.. let the varsity and the coaching staff do their jobs.. alam nila ang ginagawa nila.. at tayong mga fans are here to SUPPORT them no matter what.. whether win or lose..
    ANIMO! BELIEVE! KEEP THE FAITH!

  • Archer

The main reason why we are loosing is because the players are so soft… They are soft inside and outside meaning “lalambot lambot” everytime they play. How i wish LA Revilla is playing for us this season, he can be the moral booster and spit fire for the team and can be a leader. Guys, coach franz and his staffs are doing their jobs its the players who are not responding, yes they may play good at a certain game but in the next game they disappear. Inconsistent ang mga players natin this season. 4 more games i still believe we can make it to the final 4 provided we beat UST and UE this coming Saturday, Team 1 step at a time. slowly but surely. The players are not defending properly they should be more aggressive on defense and be enthusiastic on offense. I know it will be a long shot for the team to reach the final 4 but its still possible remember the team had a 4 game winning streak before the end of the first round, So again it can still be done. keep the faith AN1MO La Salle!!!

  • Mike H

I agree that it seems our players lack the passion to win thus far…can we train our players to shoot better free throws? this has been a major problem over the years…Coach Franz is still the best but I’m glad Dindo is with us too…I hope LaSallians continue to watch the games live and support the team…saddens me when some people only watch the live Ateneo-DLSU games…we may make the final 4 with hardwork and help of some upsets…Animo La Salle!
