The View from the Armchair: Game 10 vs UP

Sigh. Another loss. To a team we were expected to beat. Our 1st loss to UP since I-don’t-remember-when. In the 2nd round, our 3rd. Our 4th consecutive. After the weekend, we are firmly in 5th place. How do you like that? A 1-2-3-4-5 sequence.

Ok, the loss to UP dampened our chances of making the final 4. But we’re not out of it yet. We figure to be in a tussle with UST for the last final 4 slot, but need to stay ahead of our erstwhile conquerors Adamson and UP who are only 1 game behind. Not quite where we thought we’d be.

The loss was particularly painful because it hit right at the heart of the previous Archer strengths – the defense. UP, one of the offensively challenged teams which also was among the leaders in the turnover department, dropped 83 points on the Archers, while beating the Archers on the turnover statistics. And of all things, the prime contributor from the UP Maroons, Mikee Reyes, was in a green-and-white uniform of LSGH last year.

What went right

Again, very little. As in the previous losses, the Archers were outhustled, outshot, outrebounded when it mattered most, and generally outplayed. But the offense of the Archers showed some promise. Peejay showed that his shooting touch is back, again topscoring for the Archers with 18, after coming off a 16-point output against Ateneo. Four other Archers scored in double figures: James (15), Joshua (11), Maui (10), and Bader (10). Two point shooting was good for a change, with the Archers connecting on 50% of their attempts (29/58). Now, if only they took more attempts instead of dribbling around the perimeter . . .

Only Peejay had any success from the 3point area, hitting all 3 of the Archers’ 17 attempts from long distance. Bader played well, playing aggressive defense, getting 2 steals and 2 assists while making 5/7 of his field goal attempts. Jovet was particularly active on the boards, pulling down 10 rebounds, one of the highest numbers of an Archer this season. Oh yeah, Sam finally made his first 2point field goal in the tournament, but unfortunately he missed all his 3point attempts.

What didn’t work

Obviously, the defense. Anytime you allow a team like UP to score 83 points on you, the defense has to be the culprit. In fairness to the Maroons, though, they almost overcame a 31point UST lead in their last game, so they can score in bunches. They obviously brought over that momentum into our game. We continued to be vulnerable to good dribble penetrators from the perimeter. Mikee Reyes had a career game with 25points on 4/7 shooting from the 3point area, 6/11 from closer in, ½ from the free throw line, and dished out 6 assists, and collared 5 rebounds. He repeatedly found himself open for the long shots or blew by his guards. Mark Lopez, an athletic swingman, also punished the defense for 11 points on 5/10 shooting while grabbing 7 offensive rebounds. Woody Co also added to the woes by pumping in 13 points on 2/3 shooting from 3point land.

The interior defense failed to keep the Maroons at bay, and they crashed the boards for 20 offensive rebounds. The telling game statistics were the turnovers: 16 to 22 in UP’s favor. The numbers are usually the other way around, showing which team is able to bother their opponents more. Some of our turnovers were simple errors: Jovet’s costly passing error which Gingerich turned into a 3point play, Hyram’s crunch time dribble off his foot.

UP also out-assisted our team, 16-11. For a guard-oriented team, this is a telling statistic. Our pgs were not getting the job done. Granted, Simon was out due to injury, so primary pg duties fell to Bader and Hyram, with Joel only seeing 4 minutes. Bader played solidly at the point, but was out on 5 fouls by the 8th minute of the 4th quarter. UP also had more steals, 8-5, showing their aggressiveness and desire to win.

Joshua was his usual aggressive self, but misfired badly on his attempts, particularly when he received a pass underneath, but instead of going straight up, he elected to do a power dribble and was promptly blocked by the scrambling UP defense.

What cost the Archers the game was their uncharacteristic uncertainty in the end game. With less than a minute to go in the game and the Archers behind by 3, Hyram wasted too much time dribbling, until he decided to drive when no play materialized. The wasted time was devastating, because the Archers could have had a 2-for-1 possession situation if they had not wasted as much time. The uncertainty in the Archers’ game was shown in the turnover numbers. 8 players had 2 or more turnovers. Not usual for the Green Archers that we’ve known in the past.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS

The rookie watch

Sam logged the most minutes at 9, but failed to make a major impact as he managed to contribute only 2 points. Yutien played 8 minutes, and showed that he will be a defensive headache for opponents in the future as he blocked 3 UP attempts. Arvie scored on his only fg attempt but played only 3 minutes in the first quarter. Joel was on the floor for only 4 minutes, and Gab and Jed played a minute each.

Moving forward

We play UE, UST, and FEU before closing out against NU. The Archers have to plug the holes in their defensive setup, in particular against good dribbler penetrators. UE and FEU have such players in Lee and Barroca, who can drive and score, or dish to waiting teammates. The Archers have to play to their strengths with confidence. While the effort has been there, there is a noticeable lack of fire in their game, except for Joshua and Maui.

The margin of error is now very slim. With a 4-6 record, the Archers now need to win all 4 remaining games to make it to the final 4. If they lose any, they will have to rely on a combination of wins and losses from the other teams like UST and UE, and even Adamson and UP which are only a game behind. It looks like it will be a mad scramble for the last slot. But that’s what makes the UAAP exciting.

The Archers can still make it. The coaches know what has to be done to tweak the Archers’ game. The players just have to want it badly enough to will it to happen.
KEEP THE FAITH!

    DEFENSE! DEFENSE!

  • http://deleted hopeless archer

yeah! DEFENSE! Bakit kasi para silang tinatamad maglaro?!Adamson and UP lang, hindi pa natin natalo…
4 games losing streak for the first time in Green Archers basketball history. See you next season!
    ANIMO LA SALLE!

  • http://deleted TAN

Juniors nalang ang papanoorin ko..Disappointing ang Seniors Basketball team natin natin..ang galing ng DLSZ Junior Archers natin.9-1 na standing nila.they def. feu baby tams in double overtime recently…congrats to our Junior archers, bring back the crown!

And to our seniors, brace yourselves for a non-final 4 appearance for the first time this year…
but still, we have faith in you :-(

    ANIMO!

  • Mang Ahas

whatever happened to arvie bringas? why wasn’t he put back in? any injuries wc we don’t know?

  • GREENARCHERS.PH

    TAN

You ended your post by saying that you still have faith in the team yet it seems that you are already anticipating a non-final 4 appearance.

That’s not having faith at all.

Anyway it will indeed be a tall order for the team but im still hoping for the best. A final 4th berth is still achievable so dont count out our team yet.

  • bill

I agree completely with tan, archers just not good enough this year, face the truth, let’s look at the facts, we lost, to be a stronger team you should not look at the bright side. Work on the weaknesses to get results

  • beng

this is the first that we have a very slim chance in the final four ever since i enrolled in csb..haay..you think this will happen to us if maeirhoffer stayed?

  • James G

If you don’t have a good defense, then the way you win games is through offense by out-scoring your opponents! Without a point guard or true center, having horrible shooting percentages and unable to reliably sink free throws means that you will likely lose more games than you win in a competitive league like the UAAP.

Having said all that, I think the Archers are still mathematically in the hunt for the Final Four going into this weekend’s game vs. UE because UST is only one game ahead statistically. If things turn around in these last four games, there is a good chance the boys in green and white can make the playoffs. Not all is lost but it’s getting extremely tight!

  • Fred Cebu

If everyone’s saying that it was our defense that was lacking last weekend then it only confirms our theory that the full court press is indeed passe. The opposition has solved our press. Less just play zone or tight man to man. Coach Franz, what do you think?

  • GreenMinded

4-straight losses is demoralizing! what happened to the team that got into the finals last season?! players work harder…. more defense and consistency..

make us proud… KEEP THE FAITH

  • gearboxboi

In my mind, I’ve surrendered this season already to ADMU, FEU, UE and UST as the Final 4 teams. After that loss to Ateneo in the 1st round, all hope was snuffed out of the team.

But in my heart, I’m keeping the faith. Maybe after this season, there can be another fairytale comeback for us. I’m still hoping for the best and expecting the worse.

    Animo La Salle.

  • Rockstaridol

Maybe it’s time for a big overhaul.

I wonder how the recruitment will be next year? I don’t think many will be itching to get to our team after this year. Second, during the past years, there are so many talented HS players (like Atkins) who did not develop at all as a Green Archer! Nasasayang lang sila!

I am not bashing the coaching staff especially franz but maybe it’s time to smell the smoke belching jeep from Taft. We are in dire need of a change.

Actually, symptoms of a disaster team has started appearing since last year. Rico and JV screws up, the whole team screws up. Now that both are gone, we have become totally screwed.

  • http://deleted LSGH Archer

i thought mag-iimprove na ang team natin this second round…esp. Mangahas, Barua and Malabes. No Excuses guys,as a vetarans, you should carry our team. but what happened? its like,we’re 0-3 in this round…ayoko na manood ng games nila, haha. just kidding.:-)it is JUST basketball. dont forget our Junior’s Basketball Team. im still hoping for the best…La Salle’s the BETTER SCHOOL pa din :-)

  • Alvin

What happened to Arvie Bringas in this game? I saw him play during the first quarter but after going to the bench, he never came back. I’m just curious.

  • rdlreyes

@Greenminded – you ask what happened to the team that got into the finals last season? That’s easy. No more JV and no more Rico.

  • O_o

Was Rico’s departure something that the coaching staff was expecting? Or was it kind of a “uy aalis na ako para mag PBA ha! :D thanks!” and everyone was caught by surprise? If it was the second maybe that would explain our woes this season. ** note i am not hating on the kite, i wish him the best in his PBA career**

  • Jam Legend

sayang si mikee reyes. lsgh boy un. si martin reyes zobel… fortuna zobel din. these players once played in our own backyard.. baka naman we should both focus FAIRLY in recruiting both internally and externally. we could have gotten these players… sayang

  • GREENARCHERS.PH

    Jam

I think you should also consider that maybe these guys really wanted to play somewhere else. Look most of these guys are all guards. If DLSU got them all we would have a very small team. Yeah they might want to go to team B first but not all would want that option. Some want to play now. The 2 Reyes’ and Fortuna are getting a lot of playing time now and I dont think they will enjoy such priviledge with DLSU since we still have Atkins, Revilla and Tolentino.

It’s all a matter of timing. Just like Paul Artadi (LSGH), if he went to DLSU, he would just be under the shadows of Aldeguer, Cuan, Manalo and eventually Mike Cortez. I feel he made the right choice as he got good exposure in UE. For Atkins, his timing was just right as TY Tang will already be graduating and eventually he will be the lead guard soon.

Even Mike Gamboa (from ADMU HS) went to UP probably because of the same reasons.

Dont say that DLSU is not recruiting from its HS teams. We even have more homegrown players than Ateneo now. There are just too many factors as to why the team cant have them all.

  • lou

the recruitment this year was not as good as the past years, today we have players who have probably the best credentials, but can’t back it up on the court. These guys are RP teams, MVP’s in the major all-chinese schools league but when it comes to the UAAP, their credentials remained on paper.

  • Nel

Actually, our recruits this year are probably the best in the league this season. This does not mean that they are in a position to assume a major role in the team.

It’s still up to the coach how much playing time a player will get. Some coaches will give a recruit major minutes, like UP’s Coach Castro is giving Mikee Reyes so far. What choice does he have? His existing pgs, Braganza and Gamboa, have been erratic at best. Our rookies are playing behind their teammates who have more experience. It’s useless to debate on who should get the most minutes, because that’s exclusively the coach’s decision.

If you look at Franz’s system, rookies don’t usually get major minutes. Even LA Revilla, good as he already was last year, played behind Simon and JV last year. Probably the exception is Maui Villanueva, who already played a lot last year, in part because of his maturity and the fact that we continue to be thin at the pf slot.

Lots of teams would love to have landed our rookies if they could have.

  • rdlreyes

I believe all this discussion about the rookies — whether la salle made the right choices or missed out on them — should be set aside. The rookies are playing well, esp considering they are that, rookies. It would be a long debate if the archer rookies are better or not than what the other teams have in their rosters. Let us not lose focus on the hugely underperforming VETERANS! After making the finals last year, the community, sadly and regrettably, placed such great expectations on this year’s team. It is now only too evident how much JV and Rico meant to last year’s team. Without those two now, what’s become of the team is, as many have already opined, a head-less chicken.

Really? are you not aware that our rookies do not have much playing time? please get your facts straight before posting such an ignorant comment. Achieve what they have achieved and then talk about not living up to expectations.

hey..DLSU just don’t like players from lsgh… ferdinand is but he isnt home grown..he’s from indonesia that couldn’t even make a hookshot.. dlsu should give lsgh players a chance.. don’t count us out.. remember..we were born before zobel…
