Postgame Bullets: DLSU 61 NU 63

  • The worst case scenario happened. The NU Bulldogs slammed the door on the Archers’ playoff hopes with a 61-63 reversal that was as painful as the first non-appearance in the playoffs  in the Pumaren coaching era. With this loss, the UST-UE game result became immaterial because UST has the final playoff berth.
  • Injury woes told on the Archers. Arvie was a scratch due to illness, and Yutien limped off the court due to a sprain early in the game. He was followed by Kish, and for the remainder of the first half our frontline consisted of Jovet, Maui, Ferdinand, and James.
  • The Archers came out curiously flat and seemed to lack intensity, allowing NU to keep pace in a close game and eventually eke out the close win. It was as if the Archers were not convinced they could win, and played conservatively instead of pulling out all the stops and showing the urgency that the situation called for.
  • The uncertainty showed in questionable shot selections from the outside, particularly a hurried Kish shot from the elbow with at least 12 seconds left on the shot clock in the second half and the Archers ahead at 52-51, and a James takeoff  for a shot which he instead passed back to an NU Bulldog for a turnover. The lack of confidence also resulted in a very low field goal percentage.
  • Among the veterans, only Peejay and Bader were able to make any sort of impact. Peejay scored at least 15 points on a variety of jumpers and drives, but went cold midway through the 4th. Bader had a couple of turnovers but made up for them by aggressive defending and driving into the NU defense for layups. He also managed a rare triple. James scored a couple of points, but was unable to make any significant contribution. Ferdinand showed a lot of energy in rebounding, but was ineffective in keeping NU away from the offensive glass.
  • A great defensive play unfortunately turned into a basket for NU. With less than 10 seconds left in the 3rd quarter, Kish emphatically blocked an NU shot, and the ball went straight to a Bulldog on the perimeter, who sank the last gasp trey as the buzzer sounded to end the quarter.
  • In the last minute, the Archers went on a fouling spree to force NU to the stripe. NU obliged by missing at least 3 fts, but these were offset by Joshua’s 2 missed fts and the last NU ft miss where they were able to get the offensive rebound. Poor positioning or inattention? Whatever it was, NU retained possession and was able to kill whatever little there was left on the game clock.
  • Free throws helped do the Archers in. In the first half alone, they missed 13 out of 20 attempts. Joshua missed 2 free throws during the crucial closing stretch that could have tied the game.
  • The team learned lots of lessons the hard way this season. Hope they can translate all that learning into something positive next season.
  • In the meantime, let us support the Lady and Junior Archers as they are still in contention this season. No Matter What, Animo La Salle All the Way!

    re-posting:

what a heartbreaker. it would’ve been better if we ended the season with a win even if UST wins the game later. nevertheless, i’m sure the team and the entire Lasallian community gave our all.

see you next year! let’s keep the Animo alive and cheer for our other UAAP sports teams including the animo squad.

    Thank you, Green Archers!

Support the Junior Archers!!!! Go La Salle!

remember guys, let us continue all our actions for the love of the Almighty.

it would take a gargantuan meltdown for DLSU to lose this one. there you go mr atayde it was truly a gargantuan meltdown

  • Ray Green

Not the best season for the Green Archers – worst ever – but congratulations to this GreenArchers.ph site for being Championship Quality on its first year of operation.
Looking forward to the reports and analyses from this site for next year’s DLSU UAAP basketball championship!

God Bless the 2009 Green Archers.

  • combust

I think this will be a blessing in disguise ‘coz we have been sitting on the “always in the final 4″ safety blanket for quite a long time. Now there will be a sense of urgency to improve dramatically the basketball program, especially in recruiting big men who can dominate to give us an inside-outside threat.

  • manoy64

Time to lick our wounds and look forward to next season in which we’re the hosts.

Thanks to Bader and Ferdinand for stepping up when needed with the injuries of their team mates.

What are the prospects for next year?

    Who’s leaving and coming in?

    Who’s eligible to play?

Norbert can only play in 2011.

What about Martin Reyes? or Papot Paredes? Manoj Chandumal? Paolo Rodriguez?

Capacio and 6-foot-8 Van Opstal of the junior archers?

Anybody from beda or sebastian considering?

just looking for an Archer win next season =)

NEXT YEAR BRING ARNOLD VAN OPSTAL! PARA MAY CENTER NA!

  • O_o

Now that it has been all said and done. I’d just like to say

    THANK YOU GREEN ARCHERS!

    Let’s get em next season!

  • Andrew Tan

There are reports that Arvie Bringas suffered an MCL injury that’s why he was seeing less minutes in the last few games and eventually missing the game today. MCL usually requires 14-18 weeks of rehabilitation and therapy.

Lets keep our heads up.. we may not have this one but there is always next year to fight back.

    Animo La Salle!

Lady Archers and Junior Archers bring the glory for our alma matter!

as painful as it can be, we can only learn from this season. Hopefully the learning curve will take effect by then. Nevertheless im still proud of you guys!

it was a sorry lost for us, knowing the fact that the loss against NU scrapes the Archers out of Final Four.

it’s been 6 years we’re i became a green-blooded La Sallite and the Green Archers were always at the Final Four.

well, things always change.. and maybe, the game or should i say this season is NOT for us!

still, my faith always belong to La Salle..
down and out this season.. but we’ll seek revenge next season!

    thanks for this fruitful season!

  • GREENhearted.

it was a total heartbreaker, but it just happened that it was an off game for most of the players that contributed to our previous almost-wins.

no matter how the season ended for our boys, good job to all of you. it wasnt easy to face the doubts of a lot of people, but then all of you did your best to come up strong to get Ws.

So looking forward to next season.

Too many factors going against this year’s team – rookie-laden, lack of exposure and experience, no court general, no quick spitfire, awful field goal and free throw shooting, inconsistency… But the big factor characteristic of previous La Salle teams that seems to be missing in this team is PHYSICAL CONDITIONING. Franz was saying two years back that he was confident about his boys because of their excellent physical conditioning – no injuries. This year: Atkins, Mangahas, Bringas, etc.

  • GREENhearted.

AND, job well done to this site. :D one of the best ever :D

  • painkillaz

I hope DLSU will get big men for the Center and Power Forward positions. These are our weak spots this season. We rely too much on outside shots which are of low percentage. Can our veterans make way for Agovida, Van Oppstal, De LaPaz, Vosotros, etc. The team needs a massive rebuilding.

  • batang agno

hayy this season is really off for the team. ngaun pa inabutan ng mga injuries kung kelan must-win situation na cguro God did planned it this way. first time in 14 years and under coach Franz :( ( hayy next season tayo naman,, magagaling ang rookies natin and the other teams naman ang mawawalan ng vets.. pero it’s a heartbreak for our senior players that they leave the team na ganito,, babawi tayo next season!! let’s thank the boys for playing hard and giving all of their hearts in every game!!

    * i like the play of bader malabes and kish co in the 3rd quarter haha was that a pick and roll? i know it was and that was good galing ni malabes nun :) ) and atleast they stepped up this game

animo la salle!! (partida pa finals week natin last week ;) )

thank you archers! don’t worry too much, there’s still next season. lessons learned na lang.

  • verdant rooter

The end came unceremoniously to our team with that bitter loss – least of all, to NU. Nobody saw it coming but like a lightning bolt it hit us dead on our tracks.

I share the grief and agony gripping the La Sallian community today and for the days to come. We had all the chances but we blew it. UE cooperated with us by beating UST, but we failed to do our own assignment. “They only have themselves to blame!” barked the TV sports commentator. Were the critics, nitpickers and naysayers right after all?

Ah c’mon. No use crying over spilt milk. This is no time to complain, criticize or to blame anybody. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from this exasperating and humiliating experience.

I reiterate my call and appeal to the team management to revamp the team. Time and again, coach Franz regards this team as a “work in progress”, but the composition of the team must be carefully evaluated to make it more competitive, aggressive, and a force to reckon with in future tournaments. Without mentioning names, some unreliable players who didn’t live up to expectations must be discarded and replaced. A player who shines in a single game but falters in most games, especially crucial ones, has no right to remain in the team and must be given his walking papers. We should reinforce the center position and the back court where we are admittedly weak. Some posters float the names of Van Opstal, Torres, Paredes, Reyes, Capacio to be possible new recruits. How about Dela Paz of Zobel? I hope our basketball gurus are listening and reading our comments so they could do something about it before we lose these guys to the other teams.

We were forced to take an early vacation by our own doing, but we should focus on rebuilding the team even this early, for next season which La Salle will be hosting. By then the Green Archers should be back with a vengeance!

Win or lose, weak or strong, I will continue to root for our team. AN1MO DLSU!!!

  • i.heart.green

This is really not our year. We shouldn’t lose hope dahil for sure, babawi tayo next season. If Archers improve on their strengths and overcome their weaknesses, they will definitely rise from the ashes and become an even better team next season. :D

    Thank you Archers.
I’m still keeping the faith. Animo! :D

First time in 14 years, longest loosing streak under coach franz. lost an opening game a first since 1987. this is really a season to remember. but we should stop blaming people now. tapos na ang lahat e. plus thats not a christian gentleman/woman should be. its time to review, reflect and rebuild. not only for the archers but the blazers as well. all is not yet lost. let us support the other DLSU and CSB sports teams as they try to bring glory to our alma mater.

    @ verdant rooter ^^

That’s the best post I’ve seen thus far.

    Full agreement ako.

Even our school alumni and major financiers should step up for the glory of our alma mater.

Read a news article that van opstal intends to play for the green and white after graduating from zobel. Hope dela paz, capacio et al does the same.

We really need school loyalty to come into play from those graduating from the La Sallian community.

Let’s make 2011 a glorious year for DLSU and the archers!

    There’s a season for everything …

    This season wasn’t ours.

It was a learning process for the men’s team. They may have been to pressured as a result of our record for the past decade or so. They’ll be back next season.

Meantime, let us not forget that the lady archers who are doing wonders this season. They are now in the final four and let us support them in their quest for a championship. Things have drastically improved with them after the change of coaching staff. Please do watch and support them. Lets Go Lady Archers…..Animo La Salle.

  • dags

Is coach franz still the best person for the job? Here are a few things he said that kind of ticked me of a bit:

“Basically, if you try to look back during the pre-season, this is still a rebuilding process,” said Pumaren. “I guess the guys that supposed to be the leaders of this team failed to guide the younger ones.”

“I still have to sit down with the school. So far I think I’m doing what I’m supposed to do not only to the school but also as a government official,” said Pumaren. “Nothing concrete yet but if you look at the latest survey in the district I look very promising.”

If there is anyone to blame, he should include himself in that list. And if he intends to run for congress, then go. I believe coach Dindo and coach Jack should be able to do the job well.

  • Rockstaridol

What’s more disappointing is how the Archers played. 7/20 free throws? Wow imagine if all those sunk in! It just goes to show how inconsistent our team really is.

Nevertheless, I hope this season was a learning experience for the coaching staff and the team.

  • Jam Legend

Thank you Green Archers for giving us a good fight all season long.. Shout out to the young guys (Marata, Andrada, Tolentino, Banal, & Bringas) for a splendid rookie year. Jovet & Maui, you guys are rock solid. Bader, you showed us a glimpse of what you can do I hope you can be consistent. Peejay, I know you are trying but please polish your game even more to be real threat but nevertheless I salute you. James, man you have the skills to carry a team. Show us who is the real Man-snake. And Joshua, I think it is too early to call you the King Archer but heck I think you are a rightful heir to the throne. Until then my beloved Archers.

i think this is just the 1st level of team rebuilding- experience for our rookies. they have exceeded tremendously what was expected of them and they showed true green basketball. unfortunately it was all too late as we put false confidence with our veterans. next year, i don’t expect mangahas, malabes, barua and ferdinand to be in our team…or maybe two or three of them would not be enlisted. they will have to give way to the next dominating center of uaap- VAN OPSTAL and other young guns. imagine the making of VAN OPSTAL, ARVIE BRINGAS, SPIDER WEBB, TOLENTINO AND VILLANUEVA. WE CAN EVEN AFFORD TO FIELD SECOND FIVE: MARATA, MENDOZA, YULTIEN(did i spell it right?,BAGATSING,BANAL. Paredes, Dela paz and the rest of upcoming rookies will surely perform in rotations. But, we have to have leaders on the floor…i think Tolentino,Bringas and Bagatsing have the makings. WE WILL HAVE THE RIGHT MATERIAL NEXT YEAR AND we will again see uaap basketball be dominated by our ARCHERS in the next 4-5years. calling on archer basketball agents…do your stuff….we need the right people…we need to be on top again in the next 15years.

Thanks to the archers and to this site.Keep up the good work! Nice analysis and very informative!

I was surprised though with the exchanges in the other article (top ten archers..) a poster giving sh**ty remarks and greenarchers.ph responding to it..i thought the site is moderated so i wonder how such messages were posted :-)

Who said he won’t? That’s pure speculation, he hasn’t decided where to go yet.

  • GREENARCHERS.PH

    To our loyal readers

Thanks! The site has certainly grown significantly since the time it started last year.

This is not the end though, we will be covering the upcoming semis stints of the Lady and Junior Archers. Will be there also on all post and pre season tournaments.

And of course there’s the equally anticipated Womens Volleyball season.

    Thanks for the support!

  • ICJ

It’s simply not our year. If we lose to NU, then definitely we don’t deserve to be in the final four.

It’s back to the drawing board for our team. This will be a great lesson for the green archers and our community. Bilog ang bola. Almost every year we were on top. we are bound to be down every now and then.

Speculations. Coach franz leaving the team?! Hopefully not. Maybe one last championship. or two. Or maybe until our centennial year. Our team needs him now more than ever.

Thanks to our captain Hyram. He did a great job, leading the team when many doubted his capabilities. Good luck to you.

To the veterans, namely Malabes, Mangahas, and Ferdinand, prove to the coaching staff and to us, the Lasallian community, that you deserve to be on the team. We have numerous talented young players that are thriving to play and has the sense of pride. You should get your acts straight or leave the team totally.

To the rest of the team, this will be a blessing in disguise. You’ll be hungrier to win. There’s a lot of room to improve. We know the team has a bright future because of you.

Our season ended, but not our faith. We must keep believing. Next year, the green archers will be a force to reckon with.

    THANK YOU GREEN ARCHERS!!!

    ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

What we sorely missed this year was consistent veteran leadership. I feel that to an extent, the 2006 suspension has come back to haunt us. The possible recruits that bolted for UP that year, Woody Co and Martin Reyes, could’ve been this year’s veterans. These two have been consistent go to guys for UP, especially Co who never backs down from a battle.

I also don’t understand this thing with Franz Pumaren and La Salle bred point guards. It started with Paul Artadi of La Salle Green Hills. Last year we missed out on Jeric Fortuna of Zobel, who has been solid running the point for UST. LA Revilla, last year’s point guard recruit, sit’s out the whole season due to illness. This year it’s UP’S Mikee Reyes from LSGH, who made minced meat out of every DLSU player guarding him, burning us for 25 points, giving us another big loss in the second round. What’s up with that?

But still the future looks bright. Our rookies were promising. Andrada, Marata, and Tolentino are keepers. The jury is still out on Bringas who I feel needs to improve his conditioning. He really needs to work harder if he wants to duplicate his high school career. Against Ateneo in the second round, I can’t forget it, we’re trailing in a blowout, and Bringas is scorless, until he hits a three pointer. We’re still down by a big margin in an imminent loss, and immediatley after scoring his fist points in the game, Bringas focuses on trash talking the defender. I really hope he shapes up. Joshua Webb will get better and better, he’s already adjusted to the college game, showing tremendous improvement in his guard skills. I’m pretty sure this off-season, he’ll be working on driving left and developing an between game. The kid has the athleticism and most importantly the heart to become one of the La Salle greats.

  • green minded

please hire a shooting coach for next year…shooting (e.g. free throw, mid range and three point area) is one of the major problem of this year’s team…please do something about it…coach franz is one of the best shooters in his haydays…why is it a problem with the green archers team? if they only shoot at least 80% of their freebees, im sure we could have won some games like against UE, FEU, UP and Ateneo…kindly hire a shooting coach…

also, recruit all of the junior archers team…then combine it with this year’s rookies and sophomore players…im sure the team will be on track again next year…

lastly, maybe the team should improve our recruitment system to get players that can boost the team…

kung irerecruit nila lahat ng rookies from the junior archers and erase the veteras from the list, then they’ll be making the team rookie laden again then pag natalo ulit tayo un nanaman ung dahilang ipopoint out natin.. hmm just a thought ahh,, pero we shouldn’t be too harsh on the vets kase it’s really off for the whole team di lang sa kanila and nakatulong din nman sila sa team and sila rin ung gumawa last 2 seasons di ba.. the team still needs them though, support nlang natin ang lahat, hindi lang ung mga sophies and rookies kundi lahat talaga pati ang lady archers at junior archers di ba :) haha

  • kfourteen

correct! I feel the same way you feel! This season’s final four will be boring. HAHAHA!

  • Proud Archer

Our UAAP Men’s Senior Basketball season has come to an end. It really seemed that we were not destined to make it this year, as Arvie Bringas came down with an MCL injury, while Yutien Andrada and Kish Co sustained injuries very early in the NU game. Kish was able to come back. The team was very shallow at every rotational position on the basketball court. Quite unfornate because Peejay Barua was shooting well and was carrying our team for a long stretch.

Again, our point guard rotation (as in every game) was not there. Joel did not play a good game today, and was benched at the crucial stages of the game, leaving Bader and Hyram to man the point. That is why Hyram could not get his shooting game going as he wasn’t able to get the ball from a quality point guard pass.

As in previous comments, I will just say that it really wasn’t the player’s nor the coaches fault. We were just not given the right breaks at the right time. This season, the manpower complement was imbalanced. Few point guards (and we lost two of them due to injury and illness), shooters who played out of position manning the ball distribution, shooting slumps of the forwards, and feeling out games of the big men.

Except for the Ateneo 1st round, and the UE and FEU 2nd round games (all loses), we did not show up consistently as a team. One shows up the other doesn’t. It was either the veterans played well, or the rookies. But I cannot remember a game (including these three games), when both group’s played well at the same time. Therefore, we were only surviving out of a five or six man rotation at any given game.

But this team really just needs a little tweak, not a major revamp. The main position to beef up however is the 1 and 2 guardline, specially the point. Our team was usually victimized by successful point guard defense (a distinctive trait La Salle used to own in the league). This game was no exception as Bader had several fumbling sequences trying to bring up the ball, and Hyram was taking a long time in the back court before crossing the timeline.

We need at least one more shooter from the outside, and a power forward. The rest of the holdovers will take care of the available spots next year. In order to win a championship, we have to have a 9 or 10 man deep rotation, not 5 opr 6. So do the math. We need about three players who will fill these slots as mentioned.

It was a very exciting season for us, but alas, it ended sadly. But hold your head up high Archers. The material that we had was hampered by a lot of uncontrollables and unforseen events, which are really part of the game. We should not blame the referees calls, the commissioner’s office, nor those who formed our team this year.

To Hyram (his last playing day as a La Sallite), thanks for the excitement you provided the community. As we were magnanimous in victory, let us be gracious in defeat. All the teams did their job this season. For four of them, the job is not yet finished. For us who will not be part of the action, let us congratulate those who made it to the final four, as well as those who did not. It pains us that we are no longer part of it this year. But we will certainly be back next year with renewed hope, and hopefully, with a deeper rotation to compete.

    ANIMO LA SALLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
