The View from the Armchair: Season 72 Final Edition

Finally, closure for a season like no other in recent memory.

Season 72 for the Green Archers ended with a 61-63 loss to the nothing-to-lose NU Bulldogs. For the first time in a long time, the Archers finished with a losing record, 5-9. Also another first – the Archers failed to reach the playoff stage for the first time since the final 4 format started in the early 90′s.

Why we lost

NU simply wanted it more. They played their usual free wheeling game without pressure, taking long potshots and individual dribble drives past their perimeter defenders. They pressured the Archer ball handlers, and made ball movement difficult around the perimeters.

Injuries hounded the green-and-white in this game. Arvie did not suit up due to injury, and we lost Yutien early in the game to a sprain. A few minutes later, Kish also had to be helped off also after he sprained his ankle, although he managed to return in the second half. Without a credible inside defender, the ‘dogs penetrated at will although their shooting also left much to be desired.

Archers couldn’t hit the target

Another game where our team couldn’t shoot straight for most of the game, both from the field and from the foul line. In the first half, the Archers made less than 1 out of every 4 shots from the field, and missed 13 out of their 20 foul shots. Missed free throws were costly. Joshua missed two in the last minute after successfully fishing fouls from the NU defense.

Ineffective offensive patterns were the offshoot of poor ball movement. Joel had a so-so game, and was not fielded for much of the second half. Without his quickness and smooth ball distribution, the Archer offense became a walk up half court offense, easily predictable and defended even by the weak-guarding Bulldogs. Peejay misfired early, but persisted and scored 17 points on a variety of long shots and drives.  Bader saw action, coughed up the ball a couple of times, but scored on gutsy drives and a now rare triple. Ferdinand was fielded in for the first time in a few games, expended a lot of energy but contributed little else. James pulled another one of his now-familiar disappearing acts, contributing a single field goal and very little else. Kish played well but committed a momentum-breaking offensive blunder, taking a hurried jumper from the elbow early in our shot clock after the Archers had taken the lead at 52-51. His miss effectively halted a potential run by the Archers and enabled NU to regain its bearings.

The season in a nutshell

In a way, this last game was representative of the Archers’ season. Poor shooting, weak ball movement and distribution, the walk-the-ball up offense and the absence of fastbreaks, vulnerability to the perimeter drive-and-dish penetrations, lackadaisical effort from some veterans, and the rookies unable to follow anyone’s lead (because no one wanted to take the lead).

Wait till next year!

So the pregnant wait starts (hey, it’s all of 9 months), and in the meantime rumors are sure to swirl about who remains on the team. Only Hyram is ineligible for next year. Of the veterans, James, Ferdinand, Peejay, Bader, and Kish have at least 1 year each, Jovet, Maui, and Joshua have 3 years of eligibility left, Simon has 2, and our rookies all have 4 years to go. Our team B has exciting talents like Norbert Torres (eligible only in Season 74), Papot Paredes, Martin Reyes, Paolo Rodriguez, and Manoj Chandumal on its roster. The Junior Archers have several good seniors who could potentially go to DLSU. Let’s not forget our guys who sat out the season while in sick bay – big man Marko Batricevic who should have fully recovered from his knee injuries, and LA Revilla whose quickness and ball handling were sorely missed this year.

In the meantime

An early vacation for the men’s basketball team. But not necessarily for the loyal green-and-white basketball supporters, since the Junior Archers and Women’s Basketball Team are already into the final 4. Come and cheer our Junior and Women’s teams as they try to reclaim the championships in their respective divisions. Why not help our Pep squad as they compete in the cheerdance competitions on Sunday.

And let’s not forget our athletes who compete in the other UAAP sports. The badminton and beach volleyball competitions are currently under way. Judo, table tennis, swimming, and taekwondo will kick off within the first semester, while baseball, fencing, chess, football, softball, track & field, and volleyball are slated for the 2nd semester.

Our men’s basketball team may have bowed out for the season, but our other teams are sure to figure in the thick of the battle. Let’s show up and cheer them on (except in chess, of course!).

si hyram lang pala ang graduate :( syang yan :( ( what’s the course of bader?

  • archerfan

it was a lesson for the green archers. they must learn from this. hopefully by next year, the veterans would learn to step up for the team, and all of the green archers will carry the energy they had in those crucial games. hopefully, Coach Franz Pumaren would not resign from his post despite what the critics say about him. a good coach like him is hard to find.

Unless our basketball program undergoes a major revamp, this could very well mark the start of our “dark ages”, just like ateneo in the 90′s. (knock on wood)

  • GREENARCHERS.PH

    “what’s the course of bader?”

    it’s in the players page

  • Musikero

    Just what I expected…

Oh well!!! Lesson learned guys, especially the veterans. Step-up!!! You’re no longer babies!!! Show the new ones what you are made of and why you deserve to be in the A-Team

it’s ntmsoci right? what does it mean?

We own UST! End of story.

On a serious note though… if you, like me, are true La Salle supporters (I am an alum, class of ’83 – Taft) then I plead that you extend the passion you have (shown) for the men’s basketball team to the other wonderful, hard-working student/athletes that participate in practical anonymity in relation to the juggernaut men’s basketball program! After all, they are all representatives of our beloved school too, right?

I was at a dinner recently hosted by the team managers of the La Salle Taft men’s and women’s football (soccer) teams and had the honor and privilege to meet and mingle with the fine young men and women that will soon compete on our behalf. I had a great time but the players all asked one thing: “Please come to our games and support us!” I told them that they will always be in my heart no matter where I am and I am their biggest fan and supporter! It would be nice if those of you out there who are truly passionate for our school to show your support by giving these kids a little bit of your time. Trust me when I say this to you: a little goes a long way!

I’m headed back to the States now and won’t be around for the football games but trust me that I will follow our teams as best as I can and in my heart and support them as best as I can “in absentia”! Those of you who remain in the Philippines, what would it hurt to find out when they are playing, and make your way to the games? These kids will absolutely appreciate whatever support they can get!

HYRAM is a big loss for the team! He was consistent in his game . He continued to play out of position for most of the season due to a lack of a true point guard! That is really sad they gave him a send off with a loss on his final game!
It was great to have you wear the Archers Green with pride HYRAM! THANK YOU VERY MUCH ! WE APPRECIATE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE!AND GOODLUCK TO ALL YOUR UNDERTAKINGS! SEE YOU IN THE PBA! PROUD AND TRUE! ANIMO!

  • STILL GREEN

    Thank you Green Archers! :)

thank you captain hyram and to the rest of the green archers (and the coaching staff, of course). i can’t wait for next season!

did hyram play for only two seasons?

  • http://n/a ch10

I won’t be expecting much from the archers next season if the team management doesn’t make a change in the coaching staff or at least the coaching staff plans to make a “major” change in their offense/defense mix. (As if they can with the same coaching staff this season 72.) Hyram did his job well as a captain of the team and he deserves such respect for his efforts as an archer. Hyram, Thank You!

  • johni

we hear your voice greenarchers.ph! we are willing to support the other teams but please publish more articles on them and their schedules. feature more players of other dlsu varsity teams so we get to know them and to increase awareness among us dlsu supporters!

    animo!

  • Fred Cebu

I fully agree that it was indeed a sad end to season 72, unlike the euphoric feeling we had when we graduated in 1972! A major team rebuilding is clearly called for. Personally, I feel that we should keep Webb, Tolentino, Mendoza, Andrada, Villanueva, Marata and Bringas (if he loses weight and improves on his jumping/rebounding potential) as the core group for next season. The others in the current team should be replaced or seriously considered for retention. We have a rich pool of young talents to pick from to form a potent force in season 73.

  • ICJ

    @ ch10
with all due respect, I disagree with you.

I do not believe the coaching staff should be changed. Nor the strategy they use. not a single person should be replaced. Maybe adding a shooting coach will be the trick.

Our team did not respond well in this season because we lack a go-to-guy. For the past decade we never lacked that kind of a player. from ritualo to cardona to yeo to tang to casio. not to mention the team surrounding them was reliable. with arana, pocholo, maierhofer and others. This year we have the best set of rookies in the league, but no single archer could carry the load when they needed it most. the so called “veterans” was in and out. peejay’s shooting was not that good. mangahas was there sometimes, but most of the time he babied his shots. malabes, well, you saw what happened throughout the season. In the case of Hyram, he’s just a sophomore.

The system of coach franz is proven, let’s not make hasty actions that we might regret after.

Give the coaching staff one more year to hone these athletes. I’m sure in season 73, the archers will once again be contenders for the title.

I can even make a prediction right now who will face in the finals next year, even though it’s so far away.

    FEU vs DLSU.

  • Jam Legend

Coach Franz’ stats in not making the Final Four
    1(2009)/11(1998-2008). Thats only 9%. Not bad…

  • dis

Okay, Okay. Let’s give the Pumaren system one more season to redeem itself from this embarrassment. If there is still no improvement after next season, then it’s time for Franz to move on and concentrate on his political career.

There are many other La Sallian coaches out there who are capable of taking over.

Franz can’t be coach forever you know.

  • Nel

You make it sound like it’s our decision whether Franz stays or goes. Well, it’s not. His tenure as coach is determined by his agreement with the school administration. We have absolutely ZERO say as to whether he continues to coach or not.

There are so many other coaches out there, true, but none of them have his track record or ability to consistently deliver the final 4 results and championships. Only his brother Derek was able to give us any UAAP championships (3 but one was taken away by the board).

Hopefully that’s the last we’ll hear about who the coach will be. Let’s remember that we’re merely interested spectators in this process with no vote.

  • greenie4ever

This was a season of ups and downs – mostly downs. I don’t remember losing to AdU, UP and NU all in the same season and certainly not all in one round. If we had started Season 72 with the second round, we’d be 1 – 6 and dead last in the standings! If this season was a “learning experience” for the team then it is with fervent hope that the team and the coaching staff did indeed learn from it and start planning for next season right away because, as I see it, a lot of work needs to be done. But that’s just my opinion. In all fairness to all concerned, no team can stay on top forever, even the best teams get stuck in a rut sometime. We just have to make sure we can get out of the rut, if not next season then the season after that. Will Coach Franz be back next year? Well, with the way this season unfolded I wouldn’t be surprised if he took some time off! But he doesn’t strike me as a coach who will walk away from a challenge or give up that easily. Even if he decides to call it quits, I think the team will be in good hands, i.e., Dindo, Jack and company will definitely be capable of filling his giant sized shoes. I, for one, will be eagerly anticipating the continued development of the Green Archers through the off season. There’s nowhere to go but up. Keep the faith. ANIMO LA SALLE

  • gc

Dapat ang mawala sa team e cla mangahas, barua and malabes. Wala naman na sila dapat patunayan. Kung ngayon nga wala silang nagawa what more next year.

  • Fred Cebu

We have to move fast to recruit the graduating talented players from the junior squad. Baka mawala pa sa atin ang mga yan. I am sure the other schools are also eyeing them. Marami din magagaling sa probinsya. Our talent scouts should sharpen their searching skills and be the “early birds” in the nationwide search. Our advantage is that we are DLSU with a champion’s pedigree. We can attract very good material.

  • Ian

I have and will always be here for the support of the team. Let’s Go Green Archers! Animo La Salle!

  • Joseph Yu

What the team needs is development training.. they already have the skills, but what they are lacking are consistent progress from trainings and practices..

ang panget ng set play nila.. ala masyadong pick and roll sa offense.. sayang ang mga 3pointers dahil alang masyadong screen sa mga Forwards.. well guys, sana natuto kayo sa season 72.. just wait for season 73 and suprise them with your arsenals.

  • BENch BOY

Coach Franz’s system is a proven winning strategy ! it is tough and unrelenting on defense and offensive patterns that relies not on an individual player but on the whole team to be at certain positons to make high percentage shots! Now it is the coach.s job to recruit players who they think will fit perfectly within the system. Thats why we have players who even if we think are not up to par ,are still playing for us .Its because they do what the coaching staff had tasked them to do.. The players that they have right now are the best players that fit the system. When recruiting and evaluating players for consideration for the team aside from the obvious ie. need in that positon or height which is always a need ,the coaching staff also has to address the emotional and psychological make up of the players. Which goes back to the evaluation process. Why is it important ,to see if they have the maturity to withstand the rigors of playing in such a high profile basketball program! Some players cant handle the pressure ,while others excel! Now whether we like it or not the players who nave been carefully selected and evaluated by our coaching staff are the ones who made an impression on the coaching staff and ergo, your GREENARCHERS TEAM! THE QUESTION NOW IS……..IS COACH PUMARENS SYSTEM OUTDATED OR THE LEAGUE HAS SIMPLY CAUGHT UP TO IT ??? OPINIONS POR FAVOR!!

  • BENch BOY

ICJ…HYRAM IS A SOPHOMORE BUT HAS USED UP HIS ELIGIBILITY SO HE IS DONE PLAYING FOR THE ARCHERS .HE IS 25 AND COLLEGE RULES STATES THAT YOU CAN ONLY PLAY UNTIL A CERTAIN AGE!HE CAME FROM THE THE STATES AFTER HIGHSCHOOL AND WAS HEAVILY RECRUITED BY OTHER SCHOOLS , HE PLAYED 2 YEARS OF COLLEGE BASKETBALL IN THE STATES DIVISION 3 BEFORE TRYING HIS LUCK IN THE PHILIPPINES .HE HAD TO SIT OUT 2 YEARS BEFORE BEING ALLOWED TO PLAY. SAN BEDA AND ATENEO WERE HOT ON HIM UNTIL COACH FRANZ PERSUADED HIM TO JOIN THE ARCHERS. SO HE USED UP MOST OF HIS ELIGIBILITY AND ONLY HAD 2 MORE YEARS LEFT. IM GLAD HE PLAYED FOR US .WHAT A CLASS ACT! AGAIN THANKS HYRAM AND GOODLUCK!

  • Proud Archer

We will surely have a better season next year than this one. For the uninitiated, the result this season was not totally unexpected. After coming off a suspension in 2006, we were not allowed to recruit players except for those already in the pipeline that year. Thus, our 2007 comeback and vindication championship team was composed of our seasoned, grizzled veterans in TY Tang, Cholo Villanueva, J.V. Casio, Rico Maerhoffer, et. al. A lot of firepower and savvy in that group.

With Cholo and TY’s graduation, only JV and Rico were the stars left to man the fort. To their credit, however, they were still able to lead the team to a championship appearance, only to bow down to a much superior Ateneo team, under a tournament ran by a not so superior UAAP commissioner (I apologize for this but that is only my opinion).

This year was really a bumper crop recruitment year, and the recruits the school got were some of the most sought after high school recruits in recent memory. But one can never rely on a bumper crop of rookies to carry the team to another championship run. These rookies must be allowed to develop during their 5-year collegiate career. Only a select hadnful of players do make an impact on their first year, and those that do often become “victims” of the sophomore jinx. Practically speaking however, this is not a jinx. An impact rookie will always be a much studied and targetted sophomore. That is the reason for that “jinx” belief. Other teams just pay attention more.

What developed next was a series of events, misfortunes, whatever you may call them. But these events now provenly affected our chances of making it to the final four this season.

First of course, was Rico’s decision to forego his final year. Next was Marko Batricevic’ injury during the 1st Ateneo La Salle Fil-oil game, preparatory to the UAAP. Immediately following that was LA Revilla’s bout with juvenile diabetes, and to top it all, he even contracted dengue. This was where our point guard rotation suffered.

During the tournament, one after the other, injuries and illnesses hounded us still (James Mangahas and Peejay Barua getting sick, Simon Atkins’ broken foot, and Arvie Bringas’ MCL, and those two sprained feet of Yutien and Kish, at the most crucial time possible). These are not excuses Archers, Just an enumeration of events. Those who were left playing should have picked up the cudgels of the the fallen. Believe me, they did their best, but our rotation was very shallow. This may have even led to the injuries to the players sustained during the tournament.

So don’t be so down Archer’s. You can only shoot so many ducks with the limited supply of bird shot we were left with. Next year, we should have all the bullets we need to bring down an Eagle, a Falcon, a Dog, a Warrior, a Tiger, a Fighting Maroon, and a Tamaraw. It may not be easy hunting for us, but we will be back in our stealthy and stalking mode next year.

    ANIMO!!!!!

  • Fred Cebu

    @bench boy

It is not the system that is the problem but how a coach adjusts to a certain situation in the court. If a full press, and all of its variants for that matter, do not work for a certain number of minutes, the coach must be quick to shift to other defensive options like a zone or man-to-man defense. Against a very good outside shooting team the best strategy is the man-to-man defense or the box-and-one type of zone. If the strength of the opposition is inside post play we can go man-to-man or 2-1-2 or 2-3 zone. If the opponent is playing with a point guard and two wingers then we can try a 1-2-2 trapping zone defense. I know a lot of coaches do not like the zone defense but I think (as a former coach) all options should be considered by a coach in varying situations in the hardcourt. A very deep bench and highly conditioned team may play the press for 4 quarters. Unfortunately we do not have such team in season 72.

We have to wait for next year to come back and get back at them .

Animo Hyram. Maraming salamat!

up until the end there are still haters.
just so you guys know cause obviously you dont know what really goes on.
DONT WORRY, THE VETERANS THAT YOU DISLIKE THE MOST WILL NOT BE PLAYING ANYMORE EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE REMAINING PLAYING YEARS. i hope you are all happy.
fyi, coach franz’s system is outdated. definitely.
he takes out the joy of playing basketball from the players.. he pulls them down and never admits his mistakes. he puts all the blame on the players but never himself.
James, Barua and Bader are great players with great potential.. if you guys did less talking and more support then probably the outcome would be different.

  • BENch BOY

Fred Cebu..your point is well taken! Thanks!

To give you an aswer: Hyram played for Beda Alabang before.
