UAAP Juniors Finals: DLSZ loses Game 1

Ravena carries Eaglets to Game One victory

Manila – The defending champion Ateneo Blue Eaglets leaned on Kiefer Ravena to score a big 80-73 win against their bitter rivals De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers in Game One of the 72nd UAAP juniors basketball Finals on Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

Ravena almost single-handedly carried the Eaglets to victory, pouring in 15 of his game-high 33 points in the crucial payoff period.

Using a stifling defense, Ateneo dropped a 9-0 bomb midway the third canto to pull away from a 43-deadlock. The Junior Archers failed to recover and trailed for the rest of the way.

The Junior Archers cut down an 11-point deficit in a spirited chase in the fourth period but Ravena was there to answer.

The 15-year old son of former PBA Rookie of the Year Bong Ravena scored eight of Ateneo’s final 12 points to finish off the Junior Archers.

The Junior Archers came dangerously close on Nico Elorde’s basket, 73-76, under the final minute. But Ravena made two split free throws while Chuky Dumrique iced the scoring with a fastbreak layup with the time winding down.

“Kiefer (Ravena) could not have done it alone. This is not Kiefer’s team. This is the Ateneo team. His teammates set him up, looked for him to score,” Eaglets coach Jamike Jarin said.

Jarin has guaranteed that it will be Raphael Banal’s time to explode.

Banal, the son of former Blue Eagles’ coach Joel, scored only six points on poor 2-for-9 from the field.

“Better watch out for (Rapahel) Banal in Game two. I guarantee you,” Jarin said.

The game one, however, belonged to Ravena who scored from almost everywhere on the court. He outplayed his smaller but pesky defender Nico Elorde, the grandson of Gabriel “Flash” Elorde.

Aside from scoring 33 points, Ravena also added nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and same number of blocks in an overpowering performance.

Elorde was seen visibly upset after the game.

“Good friend ko si Nico (Elorde). Pero pagdating sa game, iba na. Siya rin ang bantay ko two years ago (when DLSZ won the championship against us). So this is like a revenge win for us,” Ravena said.

Ravena hopes to complete their revenge on the Junior Archers on Tuesday also in the same venue.

The Scores:

  • King Archer

Arnold Van Opstal will be a great recruit for the seniors next year.

  • ….

di makapwesto si van opstal sa ilalim he was even outjumped by smaller ateneans kailangan pa ng practice before he could play for the archers

Funny Jarin. He covers up the obvious that it was a one-man show in the person of Kiefer Ravena. He cannot withstand the fact that our Junior Archers had a better team play than his team. A lot of miscues and free throw misses did our team in. Still we are within striking distance and could have even led most of the way if not for the heads up play by Ravena – and not his team. Of course they have their own shock troopers but they are barely noticed in the game. The only thing noticeable in their supposed defense against us is boxing out Van Opstal and double teaming Nico. That is their obvious game plan which partially worked and still enough for Ravena to wreck havoc on our team.
Ravena was everywhere and scoring at will on any corner of the floor. He singlehandedly defeated our junior team. He should be a marked man next game. I believe that it would have been better if Nico, De La Paz and another guard (Fortuna?) alternated on denying him the ball in the entire game.

And yes King Archer, Van Opstal will be a great recruit for us next year.

  • Greenman

I agree.Van Opstal would be a beast in the seniors.I mean he had 6 blocks in the first half alone.

As much as I hate to say it, heroes making heroic plays in hero-starved moments have their place in basketball.

Was really praying for Luigi de la Paz to get the ball on clearouts in the 4th and really take over the offense.

Recruit van Opstal, Elorde, Capacio, Fortuna and dela Paz now! With Andrada and van Opstal manning the post we will have a formidable team.

I bet some of these guys in zobel are already being eyed by scouts from UST, UP, UE and maybe even ADMU (wag naman sana sa kanila pa.) I just hope we’ll have room enough to accommodate this much talent plus the hold-overs (veterans) we have in the team.

    Can’t wait for next season.

just game one…come back strong in games two and three junior green archers…bring home the championship…

yes…recruit all the junior green archers and combine them with this years rookies and sophomores…with the proper training and exposure, the senior green archers team will be formidable again…

please improve also the recruitment system of the school so we could get good players with great potential and combine them with our current players…

    animo la salle… :)

Nico Elorde was really oozing with talent. Imagine, he played 39 minutes, getting 18 points and 10 rebounds and calling the plays. The heart to win was really there except that he cant do it alone. He needs support of the other players. Kelangan mag step up ng iba.
Dapat hindi na sya ang bantay ni Ravena kasi lalong mapapagod ang bata.

  • Greenman

Van Opstal and Andrada would be a killer defense for the seniors.

Stop RAVENA and BANAL, and the offense of the Eaglets would be slower as well. They should really listen to the commentators of Game 1. They really had interesting points. I’m not kidding.

  • the one

    GAME 3!!!!! WOHOOOOOO!!!!!
