Young Green Archers to show their stuff in summer league

rookies_filoil_04012010

Counterclockwise from right: Martin Reyes, Luigi Dela Paz, Aiki Herrera, Nico Elorde, Papot Paredes, Almond Vosotros, Jarelan Tampus and several players in the reserve list.

This year’s college hoop wars will  start this April 10 with the Fil-Oil Flying V Preseason Invitational. The De La Salle Green Archers, aiming to improve their performance this season will be fielding a relatively young unit in this summer tournament.

Looking at the current roster submitted, only Simon Atkins and Ferdinand are the only remaining members of the 2007 championship team. They will be joined by 2 juniors, 4 sophomores and 8 rookies (updated April 6). The team may be young but definitely not lacking in potential.

For the new faces in the team, most of us here are already familiar with Nico Elorde, Luigi Dela Paz and Aiki Hererra as they were part of last year’s Junior Archers squad. Team B stalwarts Martin Reyes (not to be confused with a namesake playing in UP) and Papot Paredes are incoming college sophomores.

Almond Vosotros and Jarelan Tampus are both high-scoring guards. Vosotros was part of those multi-titled SSC-R Staglet teams while Tampus was the main man for the Letran Squires last season.

Btw, the team composition may be changed until the school’s 3rd game of the tournament. It would be interesting to see if coach Dindo still has more rabbits to pull out of his hat.

    where’s Van Opstal???

  • Mike

    where is van opstal?

  • painkillaz

    Nasaan si Arvie Bringas?

  • swingman

    The kids will be all right.

    I love it that our line-up is once again guard-loaded. Looks like the return of the press til you crash game. What else to do but to trap and run and gun it, right?

    And I love it that Tampus from Letran is on the team. I love the smooth game of that kid. He reminds me of JVee in how he has a loaded arsenal of offensive weapons.

  • ICJ

    where are bringas, kish co, and mangahas?

  • GREENARCHERS.PH

    Kish Co and James Mangahas, along with PJ Barua, Hyram Bagatsing and Bader Malabes have already graduated and will not come back next season.

    For the rest, obviously they are not listed in the lineup above.

    As mentioned, the team composition may be changed until the school’s 3rd game of the tournament.

  • ICJ

    I thought kish co and mangahas each have one more playing year left.

    Thanks for the info.

  • eps

    The team seems to lack ceiling but this hopefully can be compensated by speed,hustle and good outside shooting.

  • painkillaz

    I think this team has too many 1 & 2 positions. The coaching staff should focus more on recruiting power forwards and centers for a balanced line-up.

  • sTrObisT

    They should also have a good PF or C.

  • 6th man

    Will DLSU recruit african players (imports) as well? Adamson has recruited 6-foot-7 Nigerian Lionel Manraya and NU has 6-foot-7 Cameroonian Emmanuel Mbe. Kung kaya nila dapat mas kaya natin!

  • jing

    Who’s captain?

  • dlsupporter

    the kids will be alright.. just like they were all right last year.

  • boj

    where’s our prized rookie bringas and jovet mendoza?

    Jovet is recovering from Hepatitis

  • Junipero

    The team always has developed guards into great talent. I hope we could do the same for the Centers too.

  • DS

    @6thman

    Kaya naman kumuha nang team nang african import pero better na wag na lang. Adamson at NU kasi di naman dun kasi napupunta mga magagaling na HS players kaya kailangan talaga nila mag hanap sa labas na pwede magpalakas sa team.

    Atsaka di porket may import ay mananalo na. Dapat parin well-balanced ang team.

  • Mil

    are we maintaining TEAM A and TEAM B just like other uaap teams?
    Is San Beda Universtiy coming in for the coming UAAP wars?

    Yes DLSU has a TEAM B. As mentioned in the article, two TEAM B player will be included in the Fil-Oil tournament

  • Japs

    More forwards please. We need them to stop big teams such as our rivals and even UST and FEU as well.

  • GREENARCHERS.PH

    To avoid any malicious distribution of unsubstantiated rumors or false information, we will not approve any comments/discussions nor entertain any questions regarding any player not listed in the line-up above.

    As a pro-La Salle website, it is our duty to protect the interests of our athletes.

    Thanks

    I agree with swingman’s view that the Archers will go back to the up-tempo game that was so successful in previous years. The pressure defense anchored on the press was notably absent last year, and the offense slowed to a mostly walk-the-ball-up pace that allowed our opponents to set up their defenses. We may not have the ceiling of the other teams, but with better offensive weapons, including more speed and quickness, the team should be able to compensate for lack of height. At least that’s the theory. Now let’s see how they try to put it in action in the Filoil tournament. But since this is their first taste of competition in a long while, and given the changes in the lineup, I wouldn’t expect too much from them.

  • 6th man

    @DS

    The thing is we all know that the team needs big men. If it is hard to recruit locally why not import them, we just need good scouts. If not for offensive game purpose then for defensive purposes i.e. blocking, rebounding. I mean not just african players, but other foreign players as well who could bang and dominate inside. For one, Batricevic is big but doesn’t have an inside game. Same with Ferdinand, he doesn’t dominate the shaded area too.

    What I suggest that DLSU coaching staff should form a scouting team to focus not just on Metro Manila schools but on national level as well. Or hire a “dedicated” big man coach to train and condition our big players.

    Ang nangyayari kasi sa mga big players natin, kapag natapat na kina Cervantes, Ramos, etc nagpapanic na. Kung baga, hindi alam ang gagawin sa loob. Kaya puro kick out ang bola kina Atkins, Tolentino, Malabes, etc. Masyadong predictable na ang offense ng La Salle. Madali ring mahuli ang mga plays ni Dindo. Actually magkapareho ang plays ni Dindo at ni Pido Jarencio.

    6th man

    Perhaps you forgotten that just last decade, DLSU won 3 titles and has been in all but 2 finals series (ex. 2006). And they did this without a superstar bigman.

    The team is more known to play small ball offense and full-court press defense. That’s why through the years, DLSU’s main men are all guards like Ritualo, Cortez, Casio, Cardona, Tang and Yeo.

    If DLSU wanted to get a bigman then they could have easily gotten one but as it is, the system is not focused on the low post so they would get players that fits the system.

    2009 was just a different scenario but nevertheles, it’s not about getting the best players rather those that fit the system well.

  • 6th man

    @DS

    As you can see, other schools have recently beefed up their line-ups with big men. And with Norman Black doing his job well at developing Sumalinog, Golla, Chua, etc. Yes DLSU won these titles but with the support of Sharma, Gaco, Maierhoffer. Nonetheless, the team needs at least 2 strong inside bangers

  • 6th man

    @DS

    Don’t forget that we won titles with Zandro Limpot, Dicky Bachmann, Don Allado, etc.

  • DS

    Except for more Maierhofer, the other two you mentioned were more of a support players. At the end of the day, it’s still the coach that decides and as far as Dindo Pumaren’s style is concern, it won’t be that different of that of Franz. It will still be guard oriented and our big men will still be more of a compliement rather than be the main catalyst of the team.

    Yes i wont forget Zandro Limpot, Dicky Bachmann and Don Allado (include Mark Telan as well) but the team’s system back then revolved around the low post and not with the guards.

    Let us not compare Ateneo’s style. If they want to go big then let them be. Just remember who was the more successfull and consistent team last decade. Ateneo was always a bigman team all throughout the 2000s. In fact, their bigmen before were even way better than they have now but we beat the crap out of them still.

    Again, it all boils down to who fits the coach’s system. Let’s all hope for the best with our current roster :)

    Although I get DS’s point, I have to agree with 6th man. We need a big man. Maybe not a star player, but one who can do the dirty work inside (rebounding, defending the post, etc.). I also agree that we need a dedicated big man coach. We’ve had a lot of big men in the past who didn’t quite reach their full potential. Sayang din eh. I agree with DS that we are a guard- oriented team, but having a solid big man underneath will make our guards more effective. Plus, most schools are going big, so we have to adjust to that too. At the very least, we should be able to defend the post. I’m not trying to be a coach, just sharing my thoughts. In the end, we’re all supporting the Archers no matter what style they play. Animo La Salle!

  • 6th man

    @DS

    You still don’t get my point. I have no problem with a guard oriented or dominated system. It’s a one-dimensional thing. Ateneo had a well balanced line up last year. Baclao and Al-Hussaini was a force to reckon with. Let alone Jai Reyes and Eric Salamat.

    What I’m saying is for DLSU to get big men who can bang bodies with Reil Cervantes, Aldrech Ramos, Nico Salva, Woody Co. Ateneo, UP and FEU are the title contenders next UAAP season. Let’s face it, Andrada couldn’t do it alone at the center position. We need extra big men not necessarily high school superstars or MVPs but players with necessary skills and potential. If not, it will be an FEU vs. ADMU title showdown next UAAP season.

  • ID102

    Good lineup, even without the bringas… Payback!

  • DS

    @6th man

    Oh I do get your point. Never did I say that DLSU does not need a dependable bigman. I said that if La Salle wanted to get a guy in the mold of Rabeh or a Jervy Cruz, they could have done so but as it seems, this is not their priority.

    This is the initial point I raised to you in my very first reply as you brought up the idea of getting foreign centers from Africa. I dont think DLSU will go the that extent.

    DLSU’s system is better suited for the small guy to shine. That’s why top big guys rather go somewhere else. We were lucky to get Arvie Bringas but it is evident last season that not too many low-post plays were given to him where he could have easily scored under the paint.

    Yes Ateneo was a well balanced team last year but so were we in so many years. 2009 was just a different story for us all as we absolutely had no scorers.

    In the end, I have complete trust in coach Dindo.

    And above all, who said we won’t have bigmen? I believe the article says that there are still players in the reserved list. I have a gutt feeling that these are the players you are waiting to hear.

    Peace

    When will Torres be eligible to play for the the Archers?

    Next year

    Who will be the team captain?

  • jva101

    as far as big men is concerned, DLSU needs beefing up. we dont need star players, but we need role players who can do the intangibles (boxing out, hustle, making opponents change shots inside the lane, and especially defense!) and who can, at least a little bit, score when called upon.

    for the guards, DLSU has a lot of talent. but as i compare last season’s run against other seasons, we lived and died at the 3pt area. this forced arvie bringas to play outside his normal comfort zone which is inside the paint and play on the perimeter, which is quite commendable given the fact that he’s a burly presence inside.

    i think bringas may be recovering from nagging injuries, but can someone verify this? i sense that he’s a viable piece for our redemption season. but if not, well, hopefully the young guns can deliver solid performances. ANIMO!!!

  • Yanj

    I agree with swingman. I also understand the part of D6. But the point here is that, La Salle will look for a player who’s good in offense and we all know that the pumarens are good in developing players. So, with that, They’ll just teach them how to play good defense. Having an Import is not a best solution. Arvey Bringas was also good and when I saw his real game, what came in to my mind was, he’ll be one of the players who’ll bring the archers back to the championship. The hustle was there, the shooting was there, the rebounding was there. Only that, he’s not that quick as compared to the other big man. I was just shocked that he’s not included in the line-up. But who knows what the new big man added in the line up can do. Specially with that man that stands 6’7. Hoping for that player to dominate the team and so as with the other rookies. The lack of consistency among rookies last year killed us. Although not all of them but most of them. And also the veterans we’re not doing well in last year’s season maybe also because of lack of consistency. Hoping to develop their consistency as early as they can specially rookies because i don’t want that to happen again. Bring back the Champion team! Animo!
