Green Archers Outrank the Generals

The De La Salle Green Archers notched their 2nd win in as many games today as they crushed the Emilio Aguinaldo Generals 93-69, in the 2010 Filoil Flying V Invitational Tournament at the San Juan Arena. The Archers simply blew past their Taft Avenue neighbor right from the opening tip and never game them any chance to mount a comeback.

It was a balanced scoring effort for the Archers with Joshua Webb again leading the way with 19 points followed by rookie Almond Vosotros and Ferdinand with 11 and 10 points respectively. Jarelan Tampus finally got the chance to show his true form after a forgettable debut as he chipped in 9 markers.

The rookies showed why they were highly regarded by the team officials. Tampus and Vosotros showed their ability to score, dela Paz was again effective as a swingman, while Reyes and Paredes helped clog the inside. Elorde ably orchestrated the plays, and even Herrera managed to score when he was fielded in the last few minutes.

Veterans Atkins and Ferdinand continued to impress. Atkins is finally showing his true ability as a playmaker, finding his teammates with pinpoint passes and exhibiting an uncanny ability to trigger a fastbreak at the slightest hint of an opportunity. For the second game, Ferdinand proved to be a force in the middle, and together with Andrada, Paredes, and Reyes, made life difficult for the opposing EAC bigs. He was particularly active on the boards, on one play grabbing 3 consecutive offensive rebounds on putback attempts before he was fouled and sent to the free throw line. And surprise of surprises – he made 4/4 in one stretch.

Sophomores Banal and Marata seem to have settled down, and aside from being outside threats, are now showing their ability to move with the ball and take it to the hoop. Tolentino ably spelled Atkins, and was fielded as an sg for a stretch with Elorde manning the point. With Atkins, Vosotros, Elorde, and Tolentino at the point, our ball handling chores are in good hands, and this gives Dindo some flexibility and gives the team a different look if he wants a fast squad with good handlers on the floor.

But more than everything else, it was the team’s stifling defense that forced the Generals intto turnovers and bad shots. Ah yes, it was the vintage La Salle pressure defense at its best, something we were not able to see much of last year. This enabled the team to get 36 fastbreak and 32 turnover points which is already almost the entire output of the Generals.

If there is something new with the Green Archers in this game, it has got to be their relaxed, free-flowing offensive style. I noticed that there was not much hesitation for the players to shot and their plays were not too deliberate. Lots of quick ball movement around the perimeter, and the improved ability to penetrate now characterizes this backcourt-dominated team. If memory serves me right, the Dindo Pumaren-coached UE teams played a similar game, which makes it more difficult for opponents to set up their defenses. The quick ball movement, coupled with the constant activity in and around the shaded lane, allow our players to be more creative individually and attack the basket in different ways. It makes them more unpredictable, and therefore more difficult to defend. At least, that’s the theory. And with the press/trap looking more and more like the dreaded Archer pressure defense of years past, the team can be counted on to deliver an exciting brand of basketball.

But let’s not get carried away. EAC is a relatively weak team, and this is the pre-season. There are still kinks in the Archers’ game, both on offense and defense. Much work still remains to be done, and there are a lot of holes that must be plugged. We’ll know more when the team faces UP on Wednesday, and against Ateneo next Saturday. But in the meantime, the progress of the team is encouraging.

Dare we dream of bettering our 6th place in the UAAP  last year?

    Vosotros, wow.

If the players are more comfortable with this system than the better.

IMHO, last year’s squad was so over systematic and are very tentative with their shots. Parang natatakot magkamali especially the senior players who cant seem to cope with the pressure of having to lead the team.

May this team continue to improve.

we’ll be back to where we belong… as a championship caliber team! We will support our school. Animo!

Good teams win against teams they are expected to beat. All due respect to the Emilio Aguinaldo program but if La Salle hadn’t beaten them this way, what would that say about the La Salle program? Would it hold up against Ateneo when the time came?

Here’s my objective for the men’s team going into the season: build a team that can beat Ateneo. If the team I have can beat the defending champs then I know we can win it all. Don’t worry about the other teams, UST, FEU, Adamson, etc., just focus on building a team that can defeat the Eagles. Everything else is secondary.

Guys, just wanted to share this e-mail I got from one of our die-hard supporters who was also able to contribute some articles last season. Nice insights.

I like what I see. Even if EAC was a weak team, remember that last year, we were beaten by teams like them and PSBA. Last year’s team had a tendency of disappearing on offense, and would score an average of something like 12-15 pts. per quarter. This team has scored 77 points vs. Letran and now 93 pts. vs. EAC.

However, don’t get me wrong. It’s not the offense I am looking at. Its the defense.

    Rookies:

    1. My player to watch so far would be Luigi De La Paz from Zobel. His defense is what impressed me. He now provides us with an effective lane clogger. He closes out driving lanes very quickly, and is a very effective man-to-man guard as well. A bonus is that he has offensive skills to go along with that.

    2. Nico Elorde is another crucial find for us. He is now our best man man-to-man defensive guard on the opponents point guard. His ability to stay in front of his man now eliminates the threat of a high scoring point guard, something we suffered from last season. If he develops a penetration move, a floater, and a medium range jumper, his play is definitely in the mold of former FEU point guard Barroca.

    3. Vosotros is coming along nicely. Tampus looks like the garbageman that we need in the paint, but he has to develop still. Papot Paredes is trying too hard and doing a lot of things too soon. He should just relax and realize that all we need from him is rebounding and intimidation in the paint.

    Sophomores:

1.The second year guys are coming along nicely. Tayshawn has to develop that killer instinct inside the paint. That attitude of “not in my house, wag the finger ala Dikembe Mutombo” blocking is what we need from him.

2.Banal is slowly gaining confidence although we will have to see it in the UAAP wars if he is ready. If not this year, I predict that next year, he will be a force.

3.Marata just has to learn that if his shots do not fall, just come down on defense immediately and don’t worry about the missed shot. Shots eventually fall for a shooter anyway. He also must realize that he has the potential to dominate a game with his shooting. Playing relaxed is the key.

4.Joel Tolentino’s 1st game was forgettable. He also needs to relax. He gives us a lot of shooting range on the point guard slot. He is now our best shooter on the point guard slot. That however, is secondary to his point guard chores, ball distribution, and defense. Probably the coaching staff could tweek Joel a bit and use him as a 2 or 3 in close game situations because of his accurate shooting, long range and his size over a smaller guard.

    Veterans

1.Webb now seems to make an effort to control his emotions and channel his energies on the basketball court instead. He is a more mature player now. That is why I think, he is developing into our main man.

2.Simon Atkins is still our main point guard. The beauty of this team is that he now has a lot of help. He is not pressured to score anymore, something that Simon isn’t really known for anyway. But in point guard orchestration, defense, and overall hustle, Simon is it.

3.It very heartwarming that Ferdinand has developed like this now. The guy deserves it. He is a pillar in defense for us. Let’s hope his performance continues to be like this.

    Strengths:

1.Defensively, this team can now be like the La Salle teams of old. Defense starts at the backcourt and our backcourt defense is now very good and very intense. Also, the speed of our players now allows this defensive style to be effective.

2.Offensively, there is no hesitation to shoot the ball. Never mind if they don’t make the basket. We just have to come back and play D. Our offense anyway always emanates from our defense.

    Weaknesses:

    1. I think the team is weak on the 4 and 5 spot. We need one great defensive rebounding specialist with a body of stone inside the paint. We also lack that back to the basket type of player for both the 4 and 5 spot..

Sometimes, offense starts from the slot. This is an area where the coaching staff has to look at to give our plays more depth. A back to the basket player is most effective in half court sets, and slowed down games..

This is where we miss Kish Co, who could have been the dominant post up guy this season. So sad that Arvie Bringas is also not in the line up. If probabilites turn into reality, then Van Opstal will be a big help, though don’t expect great things from a rookie yet. A Sta. Maria, a J.R. Aquino, or a Jerwin Gaco is what we lack. Tampus looks like he will develop into one but we need one dominant one now.

2.We need one more shooter. Actually, a PURE shooter is what we need. Marata should step up as this is his main role. But if Marata doesn’t get going, we need that second gunner to spell him. Again, Joel Tolentino could swing into this role nicely.

how about the tall Fil-Canadian recruit (Torres?) I s he part of the team?

Torres will only be eligible next season

La Salle is doing ok, But what we lack now is the energizer, bruiser, relentless, banger forward/center. The Likes of Gerwin Gaco, Willie Wilson, Adonis Sta. Maria, Rico Maierhoffer. Some of them are undersized, but what we need from them is energy, banging inside, loose balls, relentless rebounding. In the current La Salle team, One player is capable of doing that, Jovet Mendoza is, but right now he’s still recovering to game shape, he’ll be good though in upcoming UAAP season. I hope Paredes will soon realize and do what the team needs him to do.

We believe in you Guys! Keep it up!

    Animo La Salle!
