Archers fall to Altas. Was it just Jetlag?

With the Green Archers’ shocking 56-71 loss to the UPHDS Altas today, many are beginning to think that maybe the 2-week Chicago training does the team more harm than good. It’s too early to tell, but for some, they fear the team’s breakdown in 2009 will repeat itself.

Last year the Green Archers had a great start in both the Fil-Oil and Nike preseason tournaments before they left overseas. When they returned, the team’s fortunes for the rest of the year took a turn for the worse. The Archers suffered a series of setbacks that eventually took them out of contention in the preseason. The bad luck carried over into the UAAP wherein the Archers finished 6th and failed to reach the Final 4 for the first time. The postseason was no different as they got knocked out immediately by a short-handed Letran squad in the first round of the PCCL.

The loss was totally unexpected. Many were hoping that the team would perform much better after their training. The Green Archers were simply out-of-sync with only two players scoring in double digits. The boys’ intensity on both ends was evidently lacking as they allowed the Altas to score at will.

Altas’ coach and current DLSZ mentor Boris Aldeguer did a masterful of shutting down our offense especially in the 2nd quarter wherein they pulled away for good. His new recruits, mostly transferees from the “defunct” PCU Dolphins team did most of the damage for them.

So did the Green Archers suffer a case of jetlag or some kind of Windy City jinx? We will soon find out in their succeeding games. Of course, this is just the preseason.

Could there be a “Chicago Curse” on the team?

  • Marco

jetlag? they’ve been here 4 days. it’s probably a case of taking the opponents lightly.

  • James G

In fairness, I think it might be a little premature to judge future success or failure on one game! Weather, travel, time zones, etc., there are a lot of differences between Chicago and Manila, especially the hot weather so I’d cut these guys some slack. For now.

  • Sam

the archers just suck. I’m a DLSU grad and noticed that ever since the mark benitiez incident, the archers have never been the same. Realty check, we won’t win in the next few years.

  • DS

    Sam

What a short-term memory you have. Where were you when the Archers won in 2007 and had a chance to defend it the year later? Does that suck to you?

True they were a dissapppointment last year but if you look closely the team is young. Maybe they wont win this year or even next year but will always support them. Too bad they are just so many fair-weathered supporters around.

  • Dogg

    DS

my sentiments exactly. Fans like sam suck out the hope and will out of young fans.

  • Joe G

I am an avid follower of the team. I was very disappointed that we lost to a lowly team after a fantastic win over Ateneo which seems so long ago now. Marco is obviously not a seasoned traveller and don’t know the effects of jet lag. On the other hand I am sure there was also an element of over confidence. We should stop these “training” overseas which is obviously just a junket trip. Lets just reward them after a good year, even if they don’t win the championship, but enough of reward first before performance. Show us what you can do first, before we reward you with a trip. Lets not spoil these young kids. Their heads might swell before they even reach their peak.

  • Ebanghelyo

Sam, you are like an Atenean. You speak of what you do not know. La Salle should revoke your degree as you clearly didn’t learn anything. Unless… Gawang Quiapo yung diploma mo. You are perfect to run for presidency in 2016.

  • James G.

Sam’s a troll, ignore him. People like him make ignorant comments to rile others up.

  • lou

hmmm…let’s see one more game, then we’ll see if it’s a waste of time, still just no talent or they just needed a game to warm up

  • Fred Cebu

We cannont sustain a full court press for 40 minutes coming from a jet lag. Give them time to recover.

  • GREENARCHERS.PH

Having watched the game live, I honestly feel that this is just one of those days where things just dont go your way. Jetlag or not, we cannot deny the fact that UPHDS played a superb game especially Vidal who was in the zone from downtown in the first half. This is similar to last year’s PCC wherein Belencion rarely missed from the 3-point arc which completely caught the Archers by surprise and eventually destroyed their rhythm for the rest of the game.

Overconfidence could also be another reason. The Archers tend to take lowly opponents lightly as evident last year where we fell victim to small schools. In fact the so called tailspin last year somehow started when they lost to Lyceum.

  • john

is gab banal injured? if he is, how bad is it?

He had a bad fall during a pickup game in Chicago. He was there yesterday but did not suit up.

  • lou

    to green archers.ph

bad teams make mediocre teams look good, champions make great teams look bad, wonder which team are we…

Neither. Unfair to call them bad or mediocre because they are not even at the bottom of the standings. Of course we can’t call them a champion, and for great not yet since they have not proven anything yet. At this point, they are probably in between.

  • James G.

What the Archers have to try to avoid, and this is similar to what Lou said, is to play DOWN to the level of lesser competition. If you’re truly a “good” team, you should beat the teams you’re supposed to beat, plain and simple. Now, having said that…

Come on guys, it’s ONE GAME!!! Not a season, not TWO or THREE games, just ONE! So they lose ONE stinking game and some of the comments here make it sould like they should just forget the UAAP season because they won’t win or even compete! Jeesh, you guys can get carried away. It’s only ONE GAME – please keep that in perspective, okay?

  • GREENARCHERS.PH

    James

In whatever level, there will always be upsets. Even the better team will at some point have an off night and will lose to a weaker squad. The loss yesterday became so much of an uproar because it so happened that they just came back from a training session abroad. Well everyone knows what happened last year and people now are starting to become hysterical of the whole situation. I agree with you that it’s just one game but of course we should understand that the experience last year was just so traumatic for many supporters. Let’s just hope it won’t happen again.

  • migs

So, we lost to the ALTAS…

So, we should’ve muredered them cause the team just came from the training camp abroad…

so, it felt a bit of what happened last year..

    SO WHAT?

If you’re truly a La Salle fan, you wouldn’t leave the team behind for any f****n’ reason. Win or lose or even a sweep… It doesn’t matter. The boys need our support. Especially that they’re out to redeem themselves.

  • green minded

Please just give your full support to the team…win or lose…its the school spirit that matters…having a solid supporters would give pride and honor to the school… animo, la salle!!! :)

  • Fred_Cebu

It’s also good to promote criticisms provided these are constructive! A team needs constructive criticisms for their self-evaluation so that they can take corrective action.

  • CHIKO

Maybe the team should focus on playing in the provinces than training abroad..its just a waste of money and time. Provincial games taught our boys to play with “gulang” and build more confidence…sobrang totoy kung tingnan mga players natin playing in a “MAN’S” GAME.

  • Sam

5 years after you graduate, it wouldn’t matter to if the archers win or not. At the end of the day, it’s just basketball. I just pointed out MY opinion, I’d like them to win, but the reality is they suck NOW and will continue to suck if they continue doing whatever they have been doing. Ever since mark benitez, name me an archer who’s game is up to the same caliber as Ritualo, Cardona,Yeo, Casio? They have changed…admit it, quality of players, fighting spirit, etc. they’re just different. Lastly guys, please stop using the “win or lose” cliche, that already belongs to you know who, it makes us all look so not original.

  • ryan

I agree with fred, it’s about time our team hear some criticisms, and I just saw the standings and it’s not good, although it is too early, the top 2 teams in the bracket are 2 teams we would match-up against in UAAP (ADMU:6-1 and U.P:5-2). I think we should start comparing our team with the other teams (good teams and study some match-ups) instead of comparing the green archers to the past green archer team. It’s like walking in a treadmill, you walk and walk but never goes anywhere.

  • perrier

Even our weak teams of the past never lost by big margins. And certainly not to unrated teams. Since last year, we have lost to teams like Lyceum, Arellano, Perpetual Help, STI, etc etc .teams who in the past would just lay down and die when they stepped on the court. Some teams may have their “on” days and pull an upset, but we should lose by only a few points, not by large margins. This might indicate that there are mental , psychological and team leadership issues that must be resolved and eventually it can only point to the management and coaching staff.

  • James G.

Okay, so Sam’s NOT a troll… good to know because now we have an honest debate and not just someone from Ateneo trying to make things interesting here at a La Salle discussion… (Sam, I’m just kidding. It’s good to have your perspective!)

Guys, gals, admins, it’s friggin’ PRE-SEASON okay? Who gives a SQUAT what happens to the team before the actual UAAP basketball season begins? Look, unless it involves injury to one of our players or one of them dropped from the team because of academic ineligibility, then just CHILLAX! (That’s “chill” and “relax” joined into one word fyi…)

Keep calm. Have a San Mig Light or 12, and just keep the faith. Let the games begin before you all start calling the end of the world okay?

  • yup

    sam

    point taken…

um, casio was part of the post-benitez era too…you forgot maierhofer..he’s kickin @$$ in the PBA now…

also, last year lang naman tayo naging talunan…and even then, we had 5 wins, which would be cosidered decent if other uni’s like UP or NU would achieve it in a season.

talagang wala kang masasabing big name pa kasi puro nga bata yung nasa team…although we’ll be singing praises to some of them in a few years. i feel webb and vosotros could be big names soon.

have hope..it’s ok if you’re just a casual fan. mga diehards kasi yung na-cross mo with your comments dude.

  • Sam

Both Rico and JV were recruited before the Mark Benitez incident…right?

Webb is what…3rd year? Tell me, do you think he’s as consistent as Cortez, Cardona, Yeo, Ren Ren or even Arana when they were in 3rd year?

Bottom line, our basketball program sucks, and i feel that its related to the benitez incident. You must admit, ADMU has a better program than us now.

    But again…it’s just basketball

  • yup

    sam

good point…you know, after the benitez scandal, we never really got recruitment going for us…but i guess more than recruitment, it’s the development also that plays a big role.

yeah, webb is not as consistent as the players you’ve mentioned, but then again, TY and Cholo never got things going fully for them until their 4th year. si cholo nga halos final year nalang nya nag-shine.

i agree and admit that ateneo has a solid program than us. better? maybe. but i believe we’re still not far behind. yeah, it’s just basketball…you know, i really have to keep reminding myself that coz i really take losses in the game pretty hard.

anyway, may pag-asa naman palagi. sabi nga nila bilog ang bola. it’s nice to have sensible ball talk again..and with fellow la sallians too…mahirap kasi pag anti-dlsu ka debate mo, palaging mali ka…hehehehe :)

  • Grenoble

Yup, La Sallian school policy on player recruitment changed after the Mark Benitez and UAAP suspension incidents. “Win at all costs” is no longer the motto for the basketball program. The Green Archers were always powerful in the pre-season tournaments, until last year. And performance of teams in the pre-season is a reliable indicator of how the teams will do in the regular season.

  • yup

oh, and i was never really a big fan of joseph yeo. i think he’s exciting, but he’s not capable of leading his team consistently. on his last year, he wasn’t as deadly as he was about two years back…but that’s the past. he’s enjoying his success in the pba now. alvin castro and mon jose were also players that never got their grove goin until their latter years(as far as i can remembre. please correct me if i’m wrong.). so i think webb has hpe as long as he shapes up and control’s his emotions. vosotros, tampus, dela paz, elorde, banal, paredes, hererra, m.reyes…all those names have an equal chance of making it big. it’s up to the coaching staff to develop these fine young players, and let’s hope they have that “it” factor in them. not this year, maybe. next year? baka hindi pa. but as long as we improve, we’ll get there. ika nga, pana-panahon lang yan. :)

  • yup

    grenoble

that’s so true man. pre-season ball is now being taken seriously by schools. they pretty much field in their team A and they experiment on they’re new guys. last season, the topnotch teams of the pre season won big in the collegiate wars. we sucked til the end, that’s a fact. hard to accept, but that’s reality. i guess nag-aadjust pa tayo. but i think there’s a better system now with players ready to step up so it’s definitely better than last year–heck, anything this year will probably be better than last year.

  • DS

Regarding the change in recruitment policy, I dont agree with this. DLSU was still able to get the best HS recruits out there in the past few years.

The problem lies on experience. Most of the players we have now were not benefited by being able to play and learn alongside a veteran who know what it takes to lead a team and play hard. Sadly the veterans last year for some reason did not show anything that could inspire the young teams. This was not the case in the past when the transition of leadership was always smooth.

So it has come to a point when these players are now learning by themselves.
