Green Archers beat Maroons to open UAAP Season 73

Winning against the veteran-laden UP Fighting Maroons is one thing, but the way the Green Archers played today was nothing less than spectacular. The team showed a renewed spirit in their initial outing this season and this certainly gives us supporters something to look forward to this season.

Team captain Simon Atkins may have perhaps played his finest game in the UAAP seniors. He waxed hot early in the match and finished with 20 points. He got able support from Maui Villanueva and Sam Marata with 13 and 10 points respectively.

The Green Archers did about everything that we thought they should do in order to win in our pregame post. They outhustled, outrunned and simply shot the lights out from the perimeter. The team dictated the tempo for most of the game and they eventually pulled away at the latter stages of the third period. The Archers forced UP into a running game which frustrated their half-court execution as they committed 21 turnovers. Rookie Mike Silungan and Woody Co paced the Maroons with 17 points apiece.

And to top off a remarkable game, the Green Archers made 65% of their free-throws. Whatever they did prior to this match, I really hope they continue to do it for the whole season. If they show the same vigor in their succeeding matches, the team can definitely compete this year.

Simon Atkins totally surprised me today. I was never a fan of him, but today he deserves some cookies for starting out and setting the tone. I really hope he continues to play this way. Oh + points for Marata as well for being agressive today. And Webb got blocked again, so his streak from last season continues.

Well webb has to think of doing something else aside from just rushing to the basket. Everyones taller than him. Hes no kobe. So he should either improve his slashing game or think of doing something else. right?

That was a very good start. I love the ball movement and hustle on defense. Stats showed the work of Atkins, but what it did not show was the excellent ball handling and poise of our rookie Vosotros. I was impressed by his play. Almost everything was positive on our side. I just hope that the team noted the offensive rebounds by the other team, but everything else was very good.

By the way, from last years season up to this pre-season, I was critical of this team. I just love it when they are starting to prove me wrong.

I must say I never expected the team to win, more so, win in such fashion. For a while I thought that the La Salle press has lost its effectiveness. While I support the team all the way, it is so nice to be proven wrong! Animo!

Congrats! Nice game! I too didn’t expect a win, neither a good leadership from Simon! Good job! I hope that they would continue on improving…coz it’s an awe to prove to your critics much more your supporters that you could deliver. Animo!

Saw the game live streaming here in Canada… galeng! I’ve somewhat followed the team through their summer & training camps and reading through the numerous reports had me worried that the team migh be too young, too rookie laden; but behold… they performed! Props to Atkins for his leadership and loved the energy of everyone else in the team – special mention to Yutien… keep it up buddy!!!

better ball movement compared to last year’s. kudos to coach dindo for the tweaks in the players’ roles (lupet ni atkins!). Looking forward for the team good job galing animo! :D

I was pleasantly surprised by the way the rookies played. Our ball handling was very good and turnovers were kept to a minimum. Congrats guys! Keep churning….animo La Salle!

also, notice when jovet mendoza and almond vosotros are in the game…turnovers are limited..jovet takes good care of the glass and vosotros takes good care of the basketball on the backcourt…..they are very efficient!!!

Atkins’ performance yesterday was remarkable. It just shows that he has matured and lived up to the name as the captain of the team this year. It is true that it doesn’t stop here, its just the beginning. May the game be a jump start for a great season ahead. Congrats to the Green Archers for a job well done. Keep it up for the rest of the season. Animo La Salle!!! =)

i did not study at DLSU but i’m a big DLSU fan since i was little boy… remember the days of Mark Telan, Ren Ren Ritualo, Dino Aldeguer, Don Allado… to Mike Cortez, Mac Cardona, Willie Wlison… JV Casio, Rico Maierhoffer…

now that this team start strong this season after a dissapointing season 72 campaign, hopefully they will come back to the Final 4… kaunting adjustment lang sa other players, at consistency sa offense at defense… Animo La Salle!!!

Webb should try going to his left. When he learns how to do that, he can be a very very good slasher.
