Archers tame Tigers to grab solo second

Despite losing a huge margin, the Green Archers showed enough endgame poise down the stretch to defeat the UST Tigers 61-53 today. La Salle displayed cool resolve in the face of a fiery comeback by UST led by Clark Bautista. The third-year guard erupted with a barrage of three-pointers as UST trimmed La Salle’s once 20-plus lead to as low as 4 points approaching the late stages of the match. But thanks to the steady playmaking of Simon, Almond, Joel and the timely baskets of Jovet and Maui from underneath, the Archers thwarted any last attempts by the Tigers to seize control of the game to finally seal the win.

Going into the final period, La Salle appeared to have the game in hand especially the way they hounded UST’s offense and inflicted so many turnovers. They got a bit relaxed on defense as they left Bautista with several open looks and allowed Camus room for him to take it strong to the ring. The FEU game last Thursday should serve as a lesson to the team never to lose focus and play heads-up basketball for 40 minutes.

Overall, it was good win for the Archers. They pounded it inside and used their size advantage against the thin UST frontline. Fortuna and Teng’s production were limited thanks to the superb defense by our backcourt. If it were not for Bautista’s three spree, it would have been a complete offensive shutdown for the Tigers.

Good solid game from Maui, Jovet, Yutien and Papot. They have been the silent workhorses for La Salle and they will be counted upon to provide stability to the team’s frontline in the succeeding games this season.

The Green Archers will close out their first round campaign next Sunday as they go up against the Adamson Falcons. A win will solidify their hold on second place heading to the next phase of the tournament.

this season really looks like a journey for the young archers team. We learn lessons every step of the way. Last game, we gained much needed experience in playing overtime games and that any lead is not safe. This game was all about closing out strong and how to win down the stretch, holding on to the lead for good. We still need to work on those lessons and also stay consistent. Great work by the boys. Let’s learn more so we get to know ourselves better and become a really tough team. Animo La Salle!!!

“This game was all about closing out strong and how to win down the stretch, holding on to the lead for good. We still need to work on those lessons and also stay consistent.”

    You’re right on this sir.

We also got lucky that some of Clark Baustista’s shots rattled out from the 3 pt line. Had he made those shots, who know’s what the outcome might have been different.

But hats off to the guys. They kept their composure and went on to win the game. I’m expecting a tougher 2nd round for us now that the other teams know what we’re capable of doing.

    AN1MO LA SALLE!

OT: Where else can I get those 100 Centennial shirts?

    I forgot how the second round is scheduled. Is it 1 v 4 and 2 v 3?

If only team captain Simon Atkins hit his three point shots, or even just half of it. The lead could have been bigger. he made 1 out of 6 attempts, if my memory serves me right.

We are a contender indeed. Keep it up boys!

I hate to point this out but… what the hell happened to the way Ferdi plays? good thing that Papot and Yutien are stepping up to fill his shoes…

its a good win for us! although consistency is still something that the team should work on. we could have lost in this game if not for the huge lead that they have built during the 1st half. we were practically outplayed in the 2nd half specially in the 4th qtr. and we all know that basketball is a 40min game. so this should be a lesson.

but i still salute them for a job well done! keep surprising us! animo lasalle!

There are three “intangible” factors that differentiate the 2010 archers team from the disappinting 2009 squad. This year’s team has the right chemistry mix between the veterans and the rookies. Their energy (or intensity) has been infectious. Most importantly, the 2010 Green Machine possesses a big fighting HEART, which went on vacation a year ago but is now Dindo Pumaren’s most potent weapon in his arsenal.

A talented team owns a good chance of winning. But a team that does not play with heart is doomed to fail no matter how talented.

Contrary to most preseason prognostications, the 2010 Archers are a legitimate Final Four material. A finals stint may not be an impossible mission either.

There are still a bit shaky in the endgame but that should change when Round 2 rolls.

Starting strong is essential part of the game. It usually sets the tempo for the team and builds up the players’ confidence. Concretely, to help achieve this, I believe we need start another center aside from Ferdinand (e.g. Yutien, Jovet or Papot who shows more skill and heard). He’s not playing like a veteran like he should be and he’s already gotten more than enough playing time & exposure to prove himself. On a lighter note though, Ferdinand is good in winning jump balls. He still gives me the butterflies when he receives/ about to receive the ball. So, DLSU coaching staff, you may want to review the starting line-up. :)

Simon had a pretty off night yesterday. He must have shot below 20% from the field. I hope this would be more of an exemption rather than the ‘rule’ for him. I’m missing out on a “drive and drop/pass” type of point guard on him yesterday. If it’s your off night, i believe it would be wiser to just help create for your teammates, pretty much like what Almond did in a drive, spin move and drop pass to Maui play. Good thing Joel and Almond stepped up very well, clinching his treys.

Animo La Salle, beat Adamson! :)

yutien or papot should be the starting center .

    Animo La Salle !

I’d say the first four to five minutes to Ferdinand, the rest to Papot or Yutien. Its better to have a strong 2nd set of players. It will not look pretty if we fall behind early and have Ferdinand spell the starter. Ergk! That’s a disaster cooking.

please…coaches, please help ferdi develop a decent mid range. bigger players know he cant make those so they just wait for him turn and shoot from point blank..he is an athletic big man who still has a chance to help the team out. Huwag natin sayangin ang potential ni ferdi. Somebody knock some sense to this dude.
