Archers got clawed by the Falcons at end-game

The Green Archers failed to secure second place at the end of the first round as they lost to the Adamson Falcons 68-70. In a battle of two defense-minded squads, it was the more experienced Falcons that showed more grit and desire to win despite trailing by 7 at the start of the final period.

La Salle hung tough with Adamson throughout the match. It was just unfortunate that the team committed several lapses on both ends during the last few minutes of the game that enabled the Falcons to comeback. Unlike the UST game last week, the Archers showed signs of agitation when the opposition inched their way back into the game. Of course, the missed free throws did us in as well.

The Falcons played the Archers well defensively especially in the fourth quarter. They completely took the rhythm out of our team’s offense with their 2-3 zone. They also handled the ball well which prevented La Salle from effectively executing their usual fastbreak attack and converting on turnovers.

Despite the loss, La Salle has proven that they have what it takes to compete with the heavy favorites. Except for the NU game, they could have won the other two matches had they gotten the right breaks down the stretch. The Green Archers were never “blown out” in any of their losses and this shows what kind of character this young team has now.

The season is far from over. Currently at 4th place, the Archers are still in a good position to improve their performance and vie for a final four slot.

Even though we lost, I saw (just on tv) that the team did a great job still to match the more experienced Falcons. What’s sad to know was that the Archers collapsed in the last quarter. We led by as much as 5 or 7 (correct me if I’m wrong) yet they let go of it. Probably by the second round, the team will learn to be more strong and mature, focused and fighting from start to finish. I am proud still for the boys ending at 4-3 after the first round. KEEP IT UP guys!!! ANIMO LA SALLE!!! Keep the Faith!!!

What’s the schedule for the second round?

  • ICJ

Is it true that the La Salle Ateneo Game will be held this coming weekend? If I heard it correctly, that’s what one of the commentators said.

  • johni

I am optimistic that they can crack the finals but the players and the coaching staff need to work on the weak points of the team. Surely, we need more end-game poise. All three loses could have gone to our favor if only we were tougher and wiser at end-game.

Overlall, it is still a great job by the archers in the first round! Let’s remember that this is still a ‘rebuilding’ team. The team has already gained much deserved respect from other teams and an F4 appearance is already an overachievement for the young archers.

    Animo!

  • Kalabao

does anybody know what was bothering Simon during the game? he was out for long stretches during the second half and was receiving treatment while on the bench. he could have brought better end-game composure.

  • rockstaridol

Tsktsk. I noticed that our boys tremendously lack end-game composure. Save for the ADMU game, we keep choking at the 4th quarter! In the game vs. USTE, the lead was cut down to 4 (or was it 5?) points!!

I hope in the second round, they will learn to have more confidence and to keep calm at the critical moments of the game. We were giving away turnovers left and right during the first few minutes of the fourth! It was so frustrating!

  • GREENARCHERS.PH

    @ICJ
From GreenArrows of archerpride.com – “upon the request of ABS-CBN and with the approval of both ADMU and DLSU, the DLSU-ADMU game has been reset to Aug. 22, Sunday at the Araneta. Both DLSU and ADMU will play separate opponents this Saturday. We play NU this Saturday at 4pm at the Araneta Coliseum. ”

We shall post the complete 2nd round schedule once available

I agree with rockstaridol- the team played great for most of the game, then finish weak. This happened when the team faced feu and ust, then against adu. It could only mean that there’s:

    1. a problem with conditioning (could be but not likely)
    2. problem with player minutes/rotation (probably not)
    3. good player rotation but the system would need/demands better conditioning (probably)

@ johni: please dude, I know this team is young, but I believe the term “rebuilding team” is a euphemism for “don’t expect much from us”, it’s becoming an excuse to why we did not win. I’m sure you’ve heard of Lebron, Kobe and Jordan who outperformed most players during their rookie years, the thunders who managed to gut it out with a very very young team and pushed L.A to the limit. I mean experience is an intangible thing that we need to win but, it’s no excuse to every game (close or a blow-out) that the archers lose. I mean let’s just look at this league, A.Ramos is almost the same age/experience with Ferdinand right? Then why the hell is he outplaying him?Paredes is a rookie but he already blocked more shots than Ferdinand in two seasons. Sorry to Ferdie but man, I just cannot accept the fact that the young age is a big reason why the boys did not win those games. Anyway just keep fighting, accept those losses as men and learn from it.

What I find bizarre was the last-second replacement of Sam Marata by Joshua Webb. Im talking about the part when there was 18 second left in the game and the caoch drew up a play but the play was kinda botched but consecutive fouls by Adamson to further reduce the clocl (they had 2 fouls to give). I agree completely about Webb’s re-entry because he is one of our go-to guys and in end-game situations a higher percentage drive to the basket is much better than a long shot attempt. But why replace Marata of all people? He’s our most potent threat from the outside and his mere presence alone will keep the defense honest and possibly open up the driving lanes for Webb, Joel or even Luigi but we all know what happened in the end game. Hey Im not pointing the finger at anybody in fact Luigi has played well enough to earn him a slot at the end-game. This is the second time he was left out in the end game situation because I recall in the FEU gam,e during end-game in the regulation time when we had posession and a time-out was called, Dindo made a play and Marata wasn’t even fielded in. Joel ended up turning the ball over and FEU ended up having the opportunity to make the last play (which they didnt convert leading to OT).

I hope next time the coaching staff would leave Marata in on these type of situations he has to be given his opportunities these chances of him emerging to become the next Ritualo is being denied. How can he make the big shot if he’s not even on the court during these types of situations? Mendoza shoulda been replaced we needed scorers during that situation and the key players namely Joel, Luigi Joshua Yutien and Sam shoulda been there. He has earned it.

  • yup

I think Luigi will become a main cog in this team’s championship run in the coming years. I’m really happy with the way the team is playing, but I believe we will be scarier a couple of years when these rookies become even better and our next batch of players will be coming in. Dela Paz, Tampus, Vosotros, Elorde. We’re kinda set with our 1′s and 2′s for the next 4 years with Sam, Joel(but he has to improve decision making) plus, hopefully, the return of LA. This early palang, excited nako for them to lead the next batch of rookies…i know, parang hindi pa naman dapat mag-assume and look that far ahead. but with the way these guys have been playing, you can’t help but feel excited. sana pati si banal and martin reyes makalaro na.

  • greenie4ever

We missed crucial free throws that could’ve spelled the difference between winning and losing – too many for a game that was nip and tuck throughout. Another observation is that the team wasn’t able to adjust to the 2 – 3 zone that AdU threw at the Archers. I’m sure that other teams’ scouts will take note of this and Coach Dindo and staff will have to prepare for more of this. Coach Leo Austria gambled on that 2 -3 zone to counter La Salle’s offense and it paid off. The second round’s just around the corner. Guys, that final four slot is attainable! LET’S GO ARCHERS!!!! ANIMO LA SALLE

  • green hornet

We will have more close games in the 2nd round. Free throw shooting will matter more and even decide close games like this one with ADU. This has always been the major problem of our team for many years now, as well as reliable big men.

Practice is the key. Practice foul shooting every day. To make it more realistic, have the entire Pep squad practice in the same venue with all drums beating plus the heckling to simulate real game situation. “Para masanay.” Remember our game vs FEU? We lost by 4 points. We missed at least 15 free throws.

Maybe we can learn from the Korean teams? Each of their players shoot around 500 shots a day to develop muscle memory. It’s like golf. Fore. I prefer Final Four. :>

  • Javy Quintos

Free throw, free throw, free throws. The team is missing way too many free throws. The coaching staff should spend a lot more time teaching the players free throw technique. Also, they should practice three throws when they are physically tired, not when fresh.

  • justin

even though we lost, watching dela paz score his 13 points was a thing to behold :D

  • Zandro

Scoring 13 or 38 points is nothing without scoring the big W.

FREE THROWS. Must practice free throws. (I’m surprised even Webb missed so many free throws. This was/is elementary to him already). I’m quite sure we shot below 0.500 yesterday.
    Some suggestions:
    a. “incentive” program for the boys. eg. if you don’t miss any free throw, you get a free pizza meal from the coaching staff. Or if you miss, you have to pay P500 to the “free throw” fund.
    b. just like the comment above, shoot 1,000 free throws a day- for muscle memory. maybe we could have the PEP squad disturb them while doing so, so that they get used to the pressure, throw personal remarks if needed to strengthen the players’ free throw/ pressure conditioning.

A famous English football team, West Ham United, did this to their goalie too. The goalie, Robert Green, cost England a crucial match vs USA in the recent World Cup. He was expected to hear it from irate English fans when the English Football season started. Add I’m sure he did, and i hope the training did him well.

And for Ferdinand, on a POSITIVE note, he is a good man for the jump ball. His hair is quite fashionable too. That is it. Yutien, Papot and Jovet are exemplary this season though.

Joshua Webb must be careful when driving-in. I noticed there were lots of swipes that resulted to turnovers. This implicated opponents already anticipate his slashing moves to the basket.

Let’s bounce back this Sat versus NU! Contain Mbe, Hermosisima and Terso, we will win! I’ve never been as hopeful for the team since the Casio, Cholo and Rico days.

WE WILL BOUNCE BACK IN ROUND TWO.

  • pipit

yup i agree with bbal fan… Sam should be in the court during crucial game also Luigi, both of them can deliver a basket and can create opportunity for others. I hope they already learned from this and ready for the 2nd round. To Ferdinand, maybe you need to relax a bit enjoy the game as long as you are in the line up.. keep on fighting…

    ANIMO LASALLE!!!

  • Kate

Ending at 4-3 make me scared for the boys, come second round. Last year, we ended with 4-3 at the first round and well, we know what happened at the end of the season. AYOKO NA MAULIT ANG BANGUNGOT na yun. Please lang.

End game composure, end game composure. They should clear their heads. Like what I read in PEX, Webb was giving the ball away like it’s Christmas. I think part of the boo-boos were due to nerves.

I believe we have a better team this year and it will be such a waste if we end up losing because of boo boos at the 4th.

  • Junipero

20 years ago, after the practice, players would continue playing basketball. What else could be done? Now, they go straight for the computer games. No wonder, the free throws are more a menace than a blessing.

  • ICJ

    Thank you for the information!

  • golasalle

having sam marata inside the court in the last seconds of the game wouldve made a big difference.
kailangan ng matinding grace ng ating mga boys pag dating ng fourth quarter. sayang lang ang mga trinabaho nila sa earlier quarters…nababale wala kasi nagpapanic masyado sa dulo.
we’ll still keep on supporting the boys during the 2nd round. sana the team learns from its mistakes. parang same lang kasi ang nangyayari every game.
ANIMO LA SALLE! keep the faith.

  • Proud Archer

As I said previously. Basketball (much like boxing), is a game of match-ups. Thus certain players will do well against one team, and certain players will come up against another. In my view, this season, we match up well against Ateneo, but Adamson matches up well against us. The reason is their two terrific guards, specialliy Lester Alvarez, and Air Cañada. Very good guards. Secondly, their frontline has an edge on us on a slow game. That is what they did. slow the game down and played 2-3 zone. We couldn’t adjust in time. The three teams that we lost to in the first round are mirror images. Good guards and a strong front line.

We should do well in the 2nd round though. Scouting in the first round is complete. More or less, all teams will have their own strategies, depending on their opponents. When teams play us, expect the other team to slow things down. On our part, that is what we should do. Practice our half court offensive sets. Our defense is GREAT though. We should do well as long as we keep this up.

And PLEASE pratice free throws. We could have won this one again, if we only hit 60% of our free throws. At this point, teams can play a “Hack a Shaq” strategy on us, no matter who the player is. My shooting tip: Rotate the ball up to your finger tips before release to create the p[roper backspin and control, aim for the back of the rim, and shoot UP into the basket, not TOWARDS the basket. Yutien and Luigi have their free throw motions pat. Other than them, its a “cara y cruz” proposition for the rest of the team.

I don’t know about you guys, but I supported last year’s team to it’s last painful breath against NU. What more THIS team? This team has no other direction but UP.

    ANIMO!!!!!!

more practice, suggest a screen play for marata when the going gets both ways: to pull away or to catch up.

  • johni

@bill, amen! agree that the tag ‘rebuilding’ should not be used as an excuse but rather as a challenge to the team to try harder to prove themselves worthy of an archers uniform. i believe that this team can make it to the F4.

on the side, we definitely have one of the youngest teams if not the youngest. just comparing the faces of our boys and those of other teams (i.e. galinato of adamson or cervantes of feu) makes it so obvious :-)

  • Nick

“it’s not how you start the game but how you finish it”, that’s what coach franz pumaren reminded to the past green archers. so basically, one of the problems that the team is having today is that they collapse in the fourth quarter. they should finish strong every game and protect the lead. the FREE THROW shooting was one of the biggest factor also. we could have won those games we lost y’know, only if those free throws were made. Do better in the 2nd round archers. Play hard for the name in front of your jerseys not at the back. ANIMO La Salle!!

  • Fred_Cebu

I believe the coaching staff should give more minutes to dela Paz, Tampus, Vosotros and Paredes! These guys have the heart and talent to make a big difference in the team. I really have my doubts about playing Webb, Ferdinand and Tolentino in crucial situations. I have seen them turning over the ball during crunch time.

  • maitan

sana more playing time ni paredes , the longer ang playing time mas confident ang player ….
