Archers get back at NU; finally win a close game

The Green Archers avoided another 4th quarter collapse to get back at first round tormentor NU, 59-56 at the Araneta Coliseum today. Rookie Almond Vosotros coolly sank a pair of free throws with 7.3 seconds to go to ensure the win after NU pg Terso brought NU to within a point when he scored on a drive over our interior defense.

Vosotros poured in 16 points, including 4 clutch points in the last 1:30 of the game, while Team Captain Atkins poured in 13 points on 3 out of 4 shooting from the rainbow territory to help keep the Bulldogs at bay. Papot Paredes shone on defense, blocking or altering at least 4 shots on lane incursions by the NU players, who attacked the interior whenever they could.

With the Archers leading by 1 with 13.3 seconds left and NU with only 2 fouls, the Bulldogs went on a fouling spree to try to force La Salle to the free throw line. Vosotros recovered an loose ball which was tipped away from Andrada, was fouled, and coolly sank the foul shots with 7 seconds left. NU tried to run the ball upcourt, but failed to score and the Archers pulled off the win. Interestingly, 3 of the 5 Archers at the end of the game were rookies: Vosotros, dela Paz, and Paredes, showing Coach Dindo’s faith in these 3 top rookies. Nico Elorde also got some playing time, scored on a nice drive, and played tough defense on the NU guards.

The Archer defense forced NU into more than 23 turnovers to limit NU to under 60 points for the 2nd time this season. The aggressive interior defense of Paredes, Andrada, Villanueva, and Ferdinand succeeded in neutralizing NU center Mbe in the second half after he compiled 9 points and 11 rebounds in the first half.

The game featured an up-and-down Archer game, doing well in the first and third quarters, while misfiring and playing tentatively in the 2nd and 4th quarters. The Archers took the first quarter, 16-12, but could not shoot straight in the second where they tallied only 7 points to maintain the lead at the half, 23-22. In the 3rd, the Archers’ defense limited NU to 12 points while they scored 20 to lead 43-34 after 3 quarters. They stretched the lead to the largest at 46-34 on an Atkins trey, but NU battled back to come closest on that Terso drive before Vosotros ensured the win.

In my opinion, this wasn’t a good game despite the win. The 1st half was terrible and forgettable. Maui n webb were horrible. Luckily NU’s offense was bad that it didn’t mirrored our 1st round match. Thankfully Simon embraced his role and took charge of the team! He sparked the confidence they needed to get back in the game. Kudos to our rookies! Most esp papot and almond! This is their game! As they say a win is still a win. I hope the 4th Q slump and this horrible game ends here. ANIMO La Salle!

I agree with cosmo, this is not entirely a good game, we did not avoided a 4th qtr collapse, we just avoided a loss. If we avoided a 4th qtr collapse, our lead would’ve stayed at least above 8 pts. The good thing is that Papot intimidated shots from the NU guards and the rookies again stepped-up. I’ve been watching Vosotros from the preseason and I’m not surprised that he performed well, I was surprised that he scored more than 12, cause scoring really is not his primary role. Free throws of tampus was really inconsistent in every single game, I think he never shot free throws above 70% in any game. But yes, a win is a win so they did a good/okay job.

there are still problems in closing out the game.. it’s like they have an “end-game syndrome”. Fortunately, they won!

for me VOSOTROS is the rookie-veteran for La Salle. He should be playing in the last minutes of the game.

    yep..a win’s a win.

    Sorry Bulldogs..

    lightning don’t strike thrice.

The spoiler in season 72 is a fast fading memory.

The upset early on in season 73 was a learning experience.

    Mbe can be neutralized.

    Go DLSU!

Another cardiac-arrest inducing game for the Archers. Ferdinand blocked MBE…o_O. Got zero points but was fouled out, LOL.

When can the Archers stop finishing lousily? Despite the win, I am still frustrated with how they close a game. Webb needs a spanking for being too careless and bara-bara

Webb is overrated. Until he gets his head staright, he will misfire – more often than not. Ferdinand is our Malabes this season – clearly unpredictable. Obviously, I’m no coach, and I do not like nitpicking. At any rate, I understand Coach Dindo’s philosophy of spreading time among the players. I just hope that when it’s crunch time, he’ll give due playing time to those who deserve it. My starting and end five would be Papot, Yutien, Maui, Sam and Joseph.

    Rektikano!

This UAAP season, the Archers main objective is to be in the final four. If they mature faster than expected, they could be in the finals. But next season this team could be very scary. With the maturity of Papot Paredes, Jovit Mendoza and Yutien Andrada plus the gaining of more experiences of Maui Villanueva and Joshua Webb, and fearsome backcourt players with the likes of Simon Atkins, Sam Marata, Tolentino, Vosotros, de la Paz, and Tampus and the entry of Norbert Torres and Van Opstal this team is indeed scary and with the entry of Bryan Organ and the rest of biggies waiting in the wings in future UAAP seasons La Salle is expected to be in the finals in future UAAP games.

finally ginamit din si banal… i hope magcontinue na to…. ANIMO LASALLE!!!

  • johni

ferdinand did not score, shot poorly but he defended well and neutralized Mbe. defensively, i think this is one of ferdinand’s best.

  • Fred_Cebu

As per my post somewhere else earlier I think Coach D should give Vosotros, Tampus, Paredes, dela Paz and Elorde more playing time. I have them fight with their hearts out during the pressure situations. They all work well with Atkins, Andrada and Mendoza. Our veterans like Webb, Tolentino and Villanueva seem to crumble in pressure situations during tight games in the 4th quarter. Just watch the close and heart-breaking games we had with FEU, Adamson and NU in the first round. Ferdinand should be used only in the first 2 quarters, to wear down the big centers of the opposing teams. Papot Paredes has developed into a real post player and his defensive skills could decide the games in the closing moments.

  • rockstaridol

LOL Ferdinand had one block, big deal. After a few minutes, he fouled out. LOL.

  • bill

well, I’d take Ferdi with 1 block and 5 fouls than Ferdi with 0 blocks 2 turnovers in a few minutes

  • mil

masipag si villanueva…but his shooting is terrible. the way he releases the ball is weird. if can improve his shooting inside the paint or in a medium range…he can be a problem to the opposing team. masipag sa ilalim eh…bano nga lang.
why is it that many of our guys are wearing nike shoes? i thought we are being sponsored by addidas? anyway, the “all green nike shoes” looks better than the blue ones.
guys…who is bryan organ? is he someone that opposing teams would dread to play against?

It’s encouraging to see that our rookies have stepped up time and again! I hope this trend will continue. The rookies are maturing quickly, much to my delight! Again, under the watchful and encouraging eye of Coach Dindo and his able assistants, the rookies are rising to the challenge and are not afraid to take the helm when needed. I agree with previous observations that the first half performance was terrible but fortunately NU didn’t fare any better, otherwise we would have been down by a huge deficit! Let’s hope the team continues to develop. Improve the free-throw shooting!!! This will certainly come into play in all our closely fought games. ANIMO LA SALLE
