It was a Long day for the Green Archers

La Salle suffered its worst beating of the season at the hands of Ateneo 57-74 today. After leading by 5 early in the ballgame, the Green Archers struggled offensively  against the zone defense put up by Ateneo. Long led the Blue Eagles’ offensive onslaught in the first quarter that enabled them to erect a huge 18-point lead by halftime. The pulled away for good in the second half as their lead went as high as 25 points at one point and the closest the Archers could get was within 14. Long led Ateneo with 22 points.

The Archers’ game today was really bad, like a complete 180 from how they played in their last game against UP. They showed a lot of tentativeness especially during Ateneo’s scoring run and this affected their execution all throughout the match. The team’s perimeter scoring was shut down by the good defense put up by the Eagles. Only Jovet was the sole bright spot as he fought valiantly despite the huge deficit. He led the team with 20 markers but he didn’t get enough support from his teammates offensively. Overall, the team didn’t show the energy that could have made today’s contest somewhat interesting.

Though they dropped to 6-4, anything can still happen for the Archers with 4 games left in their elimination round schedule. They are currently at 4th spot with a 2-game lead over NU (4-6).

Let’s see how the Green Archers will respond to this disappointing loss.

Box Scores
DLSU 57 – Mendoza 20, Villanueva 7, Andrada 6, Tampus 5, Tolentino 5, Atkins 5, Marata 4, de la Paz 3, Webb 2, Vosotros 0,
Paredes 0, Elorde 0, Ferdinand 0, Banal 0.

Ateneo 74 – Long 22, dela Cruz 10, Buenafe 9, Salva 9, Monfort 7, Salamat 6, Golla 6, Austria 3, Escueta 2, Chua 2, Erram 0, Tiongson 0.

Quarter scoring: 19-11, 39-21, 61-40, 74-57.

Mahirap magpahayag ng anumang papuri lalo na sa ganitong uri ng pagkatalo. Pero kakaiba talaga ang ginawa ni Jovet at karapat dapat siyang mapuna. Great job!

This may probably be the worst defeat this season, but hopefully this will be the last. Goodluck to our team. :D Animo!

The most important thing is that we bounce back. If ever there’s a silver lining in this devastating loss, it’s that I’m glad that Erap & Jinggoy were on the OTHER side. Moral victory is ours! Haha. Animo La Salle!

  • Greenisthebest

It was a very sad sunday. At the first few minutes, they were not tentative but i wonder what happened to our boys when ateneo had their run? Offensively and Defensively, where was the aggressiveness from last game? Despite what happened yesterday, I still believe this is a very good team this year and will be the best for the years to come. Heads up and focus on the next game. Animo!

  • verdant rooter

Don’t be sad La Sallians. I have confidence the Green Archers will make it to the final four and we will have the chance to meet the Blue Eagles again and shoot them down. Their dream of a three-peat won’t materialize. Our boys will pick up the pieces in no time. Let’s keep the faith! Go La Salle!

@armchair archer: LOL. I cannot agree more.

On another note, I saw that the boys tried all their might to score, it’s just that… parang nakulam sila ng show-off na si Long! Ibang iba yung game nila today, compare to the past games with FEU and ADU. It’s as if all came off from the wrong side of their beds. I can indeed say that this is the worst defeat and we should quickly learn from it for the semis. Kaya yan Archers! Kaya natin yan. Keep the faith!

    Go beat Ateneo!

  • http://anthonydio.blogspot.com/ Anthony Dio

it was an off day for the Archers (except for Jovet Mendoza)… well, at least it’s better to lose badly now than later on, when we will eventually enter the Final Four… our young Archers will just learn from this experience… it’s not yet over, and the race is still wide open… let’s just try to look at the brighter side of things…

“It’s not how we start. It’s how we finish.”

    Keep The Faith!

    >>>— ANIMO LA SALLE!! —>

Just dont understand why coach dindo suddenly shuffle his boys in the first quarter,we are leading that time and then goes poof!!!guess he should let them’mag init’ first…in games against ateneo,in fairness sa mga rookies, dapat ibabad muna mga beterano,me experience at lam na nila yong pressure….parang we just let the rookies into the lions den and be beaten badly………still,ok na yong matalo tayo ngayon kesa sa final four…we can still beat the eagles and the tamaraws too.ANIMO!!!

  • Berdeng Berde

Don’t worry about it Archers. The whole La Salle community is behind you. Until the next game. Animo!

  • johni

@kiko, i agree with your observation. i thought coach dindo was shuffling his men too quickly. i remember in one of the la salle games of the past, ritualo was not making his shots but coach franz was patient and instructed him to keep shooting until he got his shots and we won the game. in yesterday’s game, the shooters were in and out quickly (marata, banal, etc) after missing two consecutive shots.

  • Cad

Ok lang yung kahapon basta lumaban hanggang huli. Importante kasi na d sumuko ang mga bata, laban pa din. Mahirap talaga kalaban ang swerte(Long). Pero kulang talaga sa go-to-guy ang team. Not like teams of the past na meron talagang consistent threat that opposing teams will need to double so that our other guys will be free to contribute. Final 4 is a big possibility, but it will be a rough final 4. There’s nothing the boys can do but to work hard on defense and hope for the best.

One note: the boys needs to show opposing teams that eventhough we are a small, we will not be pushed around. Case in point: Buenafe taunting Tampus. Tampus should have said something.

  • Gerald Christian

I think the greenarchers were bullied by the blue eagles especially that buenafe shouting against the rookie jarelan tampus. Grabeh yun ang ugaling atenista. i hate that kind of attitude kasi i love basketball especially players that have good attitude especially on the other side like la tenorio, al hussaini, and the others. ung ginawa ni buenafe akala mo kung sino sya. Yun ung player na who doesn’t deserve respect. Hooray to Mendoza.. I hope the greenarchers succeeds this UAAP season 73 even though this loss really is devastating.

You can see in the game that Ateneo had the confidence lakas ng fighting Spirit! Ateneo really deserves this victory they really fought and you can see that they really wanted to WIN that game, dami rin nag support sa kanila na alumni and they didn’t let them down. I hope the Greenarchers step up next time. “Matalano sa kahit anong team, wag lang sa ATENEO!

I STILL BELIEVE! GREENARCHERS pa rin ang mga Idol ko kahit anong mangyari!

  • bot

it’s an off day for practically the whole squad, except for jovet mendoza, still, i am 100% sure that we will make it to the final four….and what’s with buenafe??? he does not belong to the uaap with that kind of court hooliganism….

  • ICJ

I expected that kind of attitude from the ateneans, (except for long), isang buwan kasi nilang kinimkim sa loob nila yung sama ng loob sa pagkatalo.

Moving on. This was a bitter pill to swallow. but it will make us better. I just hope that on our next game, which is against the no.1 team FEU, we show up better.

KEEP THE FAITH. set our eyes on the final four. then maybe, just maybe, we can still face those eagles and clip their wings.

    Animo La Salle!!

  • Ramon Eugenio

    Blame no one except ourselves.

First things first, during the first game vs Ateneo, the crowd was pumped up and started cheering even before the opening bell. The team was infused with the ANIMO of the Green and White. Yesterday, the crowd cheering was lethargic. You expect the boys to play well with no support from you? What kind of ANIMO is that? I specially hate it when I see a mad scramble for tickets, but only a handful have the energy to support the team, win or lose.

Next time those valuable tickets are distributed, they must be given to those whose loyalty has no bounds.

  • rockstaridol

What a terrible, terrible, game for our boys. It was so depressing and embarrassing to watch I had to change the channel and watch The Buzz instead. Given that Long had hot hands that day, I think the Archers could have lessen the blow. Missed passes? Airballs? No free throws sinking in? Wow. I suddenly remembered the movie Space Jam, where the aliens “sucked” the playing powers of the NBA stars. Parang ganoon ang nangyari sa mga Archers kahapon

  • greenie4ever

It’s just a loss. Ok, it was to the blue eagles and it hurts! It’s not the end of our season. Let’s get over it and remember we need to keep our focus. We still have games against FEU, UE, UST and AdU to play! We need to bounce back. I hope the team can take this loss and turn it into a motivation to come back strong! I’d rather have one bad loss than have to lose all the rest of the games! KEEP THE FAITH

  • joey zaldarriaga

Buenafe belongs in the Zoo among the crocodiles. Tampus is correct in not retaliating against Buenafe, if he did he would only sink to the level of that asshole.Pero one thing.. Ang sarap soguro suntukin yung hayop na yan

  • rene baltasar

    Ramon Eugenio
Just as the Eagles bounced back from their own embarrassing loss in the first round, the Archers will rise above this.

Truth be told, these are the facts: La Salle shares a traditional rivalry with Ateneo. As of November, 2009 the De La Sal…le Green Archers has more collegiate championships compared to Ateneo in the NCAA and UAAP combined. La Salle has 134 collegiate titles versus Ateneo Blue Eagles with 54 collegiate titles. La Salle also has 5 Overall (General) Collegiate Championships versus Ateneo with 1 Overall (General) Collegiate Championship. This count excludes additional collegiate titles and the 3 General Collegiate Championships also won by De La Salle-College of St. Benilde since it participated in the NCAA in 1998.

As of November 2009, the La Salle Junior Archers has more high school titles than the Ateneo Blue Eaglets in both the NCAA and UAAP combined. La Salle has won 99 high school titles versus Ateneo with 94 titles. La Salle has 10 Overall (General) High School Championships versus Ateneo with 4 Overall (General) High School Championships. This count excludes the additional high school titles and the 4 General High School Championships won by La Salle Green Hills after it began to represent De La Salle-College of St. Benilde in the NCAA Juniors division in 1998.

  • Mike H

Can we hire a FT shooting coach please?!?!?! We could have won many games already just by getting the FTs. Animo La Salle! Go upset FEU next!

  • joey zaldarriaga

Realistically, i expect to make it to the final four but not the finals. My only wish is that if we do meet the Eagles again in the Semis we should make them bleed and piss in their pants… Very much like in 2003.

  • mel

Let’s give them this game because Ateneo really prepared for yesterday’s game. I would like to echo Mike H’s concern about the freethrows, sayang talaga e. Sana we can improve the freethrows kasi di natin alam kung anong impact ang magagawa nun if the boys successfully shoot ALL their freethrows kahit na down pa tayo ng ilang points.

On to FEU! The Archers can definitely defeat this team if they just make the necessary adjustments from yesterday’s game against Ateneo.

I’m keeping my faith! Animo La Salle!!

  • istarbuko

It’s hard to swallow what happened to yesterday’s game. DLSU was clearly outfought by the tougher and more prepared Ateneo squad. In my opinion though, the fans could have helped encourage the team. The DLSU fans already gave up after being down by 15. They stopped putting their effort to cheer. Where were the Gang Green members who, together with the Pep Squad, should be motivating the fans to never surrender.

Anyway, La Salle will bounce back! That’s just how we are! ANIMO LASALLE!

  • Ediboy

I cant believe that Buenafe guy. He is a disgrace to the Ateneo community! Iba talaga pag napulot lang kung saan saan. Thats why the new La Salle basketball program has been very picky in its choice of players. La Salle basketball nowadays and in the years to come will only consist of two types of players those that are organic (really with genuine green blood) and those that are non organic but with the same kind of La Salle breeding, with brains, with class and not the Buenafe’s of this world. ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

  • Marcus

If what Buenafe did was so bad (looking at Tampus then smirking) that he shouldn’t be playing basketball then Ferdinand (popping his jersey to the Ateneo crowd after a dunk), Webb (saluting the Ateneo crowd after an and-1 play), Arana (dancing mockingly) and Yeo (mock photo session with the other DLSU players) should be banned as well.

  • MR Abello

the eagles aren’t saints and shouldn’t pretend that they aren’t wanting in the breeding department especially with it’s non-homegrowns.

A lot of the La Salle community still remember Baclao(otherwise seemingly one of the nicer atenistas–chris tiu being imo the epitome of the atenista gentleman player, a real class act) and his ugly display of 1-upmanship at a fallen maierhofer after a successful block.

I remember how they used to diss sharma.

    Guess we know who blinked.

  • mil

guys…it’s basketball. we cannot blame the blues being carried away by their intensity. we got massacred. that’s it. in my scoresheet we lost by 22points. as i’ve given the blues plus 5points to win the game. that’s how confident i was with our team going against the blues…but it was really an off night for the us…really off. worse, long had his show…his guard was always two steps behind. take away all his 3point shots, it would have have been a close game…plus those 3points shots really boosted their confidence and intensity. next time, we should mark this caucasian blue.

  • Marcus

    @MR Abello

That’s exactly my point. Both teams have had their moments of taunting. Players cannot help it during big games especially againt arch-rivals.

And some of the fans enjoyed those moments too. It’s part of the rivalry (not the game). I’m just here to defend Buenafe by pointing out that the heat of the moment will take over during big games and players and fans from both sides will react to the adrenaline or excitement of beating your arch-rivals in Basketball.

  • Fred_Cebu

It really looked like Ateneo wanted it more last Sunday. Now it’s 1:1 and more games to play. Let’s forget about last Sunday’s encounter and prepare for an upset against the other two teams that beat us in round 1. It is most likely that we will be playing Ateneo again in the final 4. We can win that one and close out the season with a big smile. Go Archers, let fry some eagles in the coming games.

  • San Mig

Tampus should learn how to pass the ball. He should learn how to look for open team mates, and not trying to impress everyone by trying to shoot the ball even though he’s already guarded by 2 or 3. Learn to pass. Play the game the La Sallian way. You can’t win a game by yourself. Look for open team mates.
