The Green Mind – Archers Make Tigers Meow!

The De La Salle Green Archers beat The UST Growling Tigers 78 -69 and assured itself of a slot in the Final Four. With their 8th win, they can no longer be overtaken by any other team. I predicted that they would need 8 wins to get to the Final Four outright and they did not let us down.

UST was no match for the Green Archers. Veterans Simon Atkins waxed hot with his 3 pointers and Maui Villanueva was all over the place and made some crucial baskets and fouls shots. The team as a whole was a thing of beauty to watch. Composure, composure , composure. They never panicked even when UST made mini runs to cut down the lead. As always the defense was their best offense. I counted at least 7 times that UST had to shoot in the last second of the 24 second clock. This just shows that they could not run their offense in the way that they usually do, Their big guns, Bautista, Fortuna, Teng and Camus were all duds since they could hardly get a shot up.

It was no dream! Ferdinand played his best game of the season and for that he deserves the biggest congratulations he can get. He scored 7 points, got a couple of rebounds and a couple of blocks. Let’s forget the 4 missed foul shots and the 5 turnovers he had. He made up for it with his intensity and his determination to contribute. It was the first time that I saw that he was not intimidated by the opponent. The morale of the story is to play within your limits and you will succeed. I am glad Coach Dindo is giving him long minutes because we will need him when the Final Four comes.

Joshua Webb finally had his breakout game. This was also his best game this season. The main reason that he was so effective was that he was not dribbling the ball in but instead moving without the ball and finding his spot under the basket where he would get a drop pass and score. Also, he also was able to use his speed to get the fast break going,. This kid has both the talent and the pedigree to be a great player. I just hope he continues to do what he did today. Except for an ill advised 3-pointer, Webb had the best game i have seen him play.

Kudos too to our big men too. Andrada, Mendoza and Paredes are a force to reckon with. I really like the hustle and hard work that they put in every game. This is especially true for Jovet Mendoza.

La Salle seems to be the team no one wants to play. From a pre-season ranking of no. 7 to a Final Four spot is in itself a great accomplishment. This team has surprised us all. I hope that the surprises do not end.

Don’t look now but we have a chance for a 2nd place finish. If we beat UE and Adamson and Ateneo loses to FEU, there will be a playoff game between La Salle and Ateneo for 2nd place. History tells us that Ateneo does not fare well when it comes to playoff games with La Salle, When we beat UE in 2007, Ateneo beat us 3 times and we beat them twice, yet we were the ones who ended up in the finals and the eventual champions.

What a difference a year makes!

i’ve been refreshing and refreshing and refreshing my mail for this article, and as usual, The Green Mind never disappoints.

La Salle has indeed surpassed whatever expectations we may have had about them, and I’m hoping as well that the surprises do not end here.

Good game for David, Mau, and Simon, and of course, Ferdinand. Kudos to the team!

  • johni

great game archers! there’s still room for minimizing turn-overs but over-all it’s a great ‘never-say-die’ game. animo!

  • bot

we’re back where we always have belonged….the final four….kudos to the whole team…..animo la salle!!!!

i guess espana is flooded by now (but has nothing to do with the constant rain!)

congrats archers! were so proud of you.

sir tony, now im confused… do you really want ferdinand to play more minutes???

    hehe

  • coachoftheyear

Well I couldn’t agree more with The Green Mind.

However it can be noticed that there were moments wherein our boys are breaking down. This is the game where we committed the most number of turnovers in the entire season. It seems like that players are confused and not playing with the usual intensity.

The boys should be congratulated and reminded as well…. reminded of what La Salle Basketball is all about. We will need it come UE, AdU, and ADMU… then Final Four… then.. THE FINALS…

    Animo La Salle!!

hahaha bravo Tony! article was magnifico!

I was physically present in this game and noted the following:

    - The turn-overs in the first quarter were disappointing. Good thing they were minimized in the next quarters.
    - Maui improved his ft! It was joyous to see his shots going down since his ft performance in the dlsu-admu game was uber frustrating. Good job Maui!
    - I agree with Sir Tony. This is Joshua’s best game in the season SO FAR. He scores more if he drives less hence I think I’m gonna give some credit to Coach Dindo for discovering this. Joshua, you can do much better, we’re counting on you!
    - Ferdinand shone in this game too! You did a great job, man. Yey!
    - Joel is really good in ball handling. Fortuna was so determined to steal but he hardly made one and that’s because of Joel’s skills and focus. Kudos!
    - Coach Dindo, I am so glad that you are our coach and not Coach Pido. He really looks like a Tiger and he growls too much. I wonder how he punishes his coachees for every missed points.
    - Sam, I hope you won’t lose your confidence in 3pt shooting. Sabi nga ni Michael Jordan, he missed a lot of shots before he reached where he is now. So don’t worry, practice lang yan.
    - To our biggies Yutien, Jovet, Ferdi and Papot: nice defense! Coach Dindo is right on counting on you.
    - Ofcourse to Simon: you deserve to be called Captain. Go lead us to championships!
    - And last but not the least, to Nico, Gab, Oda, Almond and the other players who were there, keep the faith! For we are keeping it!

To championships and beyond!!! Congratulations again, Archers!

It was great win but I hope the team won’t be so overconfident on Saturday’s game. It happened twice this season that overconfidence makes a team loss. (UE beating ADMU & DLSU beating FEU)
For the 2nd time, I was amazed with how Atkins played… it’s a statement that he’s more than just a pretty / handsome face. Actually, his numbers are far more impressive than Eric Salamat.
Let’s show them we can come back again! Animo La Salle

Finally a good game from Joshua Webb. That’s what he has to do, wait for drop passes instead of trying to drive through traffic. If he can play like that every game, he will be a big help to our team. Simon played great again. I hope we do take care of the ball better. Too many turnovers today. A win is a win and I’ll be happy about it even if we didn’t play great today. We still have to improve. See you guys on Saturday!!! We still have a shot at the top two. ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

  • Junipero

Congratulations to the team management, the coaching staff and the players on the final four stint! What more can I ask for from a team which includes 7 rookies and 4 sophomores. Next objective is the finals and who knows, the championship. As the slogan of the NY lottery goes: “Hey, you’ll never know!”

  • The Green Mind

    Sonny,

Ferdinand has to play more to get his confidence back. My criticisms of him does not mean I want him to play less. It means I want him to play better.

Regarding the turnovers and sometimes rag tag play, let’s not forget that this is still a team of 7 rookies and 4 sophomores. That type of play will definitely rear its ugly head once in a while. Luckily, Atkins has turned out to be a superb leader and puts back order to the game.

Tony, it’s really great to hear from you again. Ever since the start inbounpass.com, I’ve always been intently looking forward to reading and commenting on your articles. It’s really saddening not to see you there anymore, I honestly enjoy the comments/ reactions- pro-green or not, true or not, offensive or not.

But, it is really great to have you back here, and speak in behalf of numerous La Salle fans! Looking forward to more articles from a very reputable and .
well-rounded La Sallian like you (i remember seeing you in the EPA-PALS meetings back in son’s my LSGH days).

  • cosmo

I agree with @marts chua I won’t call this a great game coz of miscues and TOs. Good thing Simon, Webb, Ferdi (Yes!!!), Maui, Jovet and Yutien stepped up! Nice drives by Marata! You’ll get your game back kid! Hopefully Almond gets back his confidence. Noticed that he’s been off since our game vs ADMU. One game at a time Archers! And thank you for bringing us back to the F4! Welcome back TGM! Animo LS!

  • bluetaeneo

welcome back, or should i say, welcome home?! :)

asar talo na naman mga t@e!

sorry tgm/mods. just cant help it. delete this post if you must.

  • dlsudiehard

people say that our frontline is not as talented as the frontlines of feu and adamson. What are they talking about? we are talking about a shotblocking duo in paredes and andrada, a workhorse around the paint inmendoza, and rebounding machine in villanueva and andrada. This frontline is the kind of frontline that can change the outcome of a game. Now that ferdinand is improving and does not fumble the ball as much as he used too, we got another dependable big guy in there who can block shots and rebound

  • PurpleJen

GOOD JOB FERDIE!!! KEEP IT UP!

  • DS

    @dlsudiehard

I agree that we have a good frontline but probably the reason why this is being overlooked is that they dont seem to perform well in big games like vs ateneo. I notice that they play tentatively against them thus you dont see them produce their usual figures. Just like the last time they met, papot was absent defensively and maui, ferdinand and yutien struggled offensively. Only jovet did well that game. Until they have proven that they can rise up to the challenge in big games, that’s the time they will get the respect that they deserve

  • http://greenarchers.ph dieharddlsu

    @DS

our frontline was absent in that 2nd round encounter vs ateneo a was the ret of our players but they stood toe to toe against the best frontline in the league, feu.

  • http://greenarchers.ph dieharddlsu

correction = ‘as was the rest’

  • http://yahoo.com sonny

Be careful what you wish for sir tony, it might just come true!

Ferdinand had more playing time in the game against UE…

We lost!!!!!! 2 days of happiness & hope, the whole week ahead full of disappoinment.

haaay! Animo La Salle pa rin!!!

  • mabuhay dindo pumaren

its great to have you back mr tony ! i remember during the game against adamson this year, you said to a fellow alumni..”kelan ba ipapasok si ferdinand?! hindi tayo mananalo kung wala si ferdinand! (something to that effect)” ayun, natalo nga tayo !

anyway, i hope you will write here continuosly. Do you think we can beat feu and ateneo twice in a row ? what do you think of the green archer campaign so far ?
