When the Archers did not have the twice-to-beat advantage

Through the years, the Green Archers have made the UAAP Final 4 their personal playground. Including this year, La Salle has been in the semis 15 times since the format was formally introduced in 1994. It was only last year that the team failed to qualify as they finished in 6th place.

The team also holds the record for the longest consecutive Final 4 streak of 14. The Green Archers have the highest winning percentage in the semis with a 13-1 record. They are 12-0 when they had the twice-to-beat advantage and 1-1 when they did not.

This season, the team is in a situation of not having the twice-to-beat edge for only the third time. Let us look back at those two seasons wherein the Green Archers found themselves with their backs against the wall in the Final 4.

1997 – DLSU (3) vs UST (2)
The Green Archers had every reason to be anxious heading into their Final 4 match-up with the grand slam champion UST Growling Tigers. For one, UST had the twice to beat advantage and of course, the stigma of losing to them in the finals for 3 consecutive years still haunted the team.

Determined not to suffer the same fate as in the previous seasons, La Salle trounced the Tigers 82-73 to force a winner-take-all. The Green Archers eventually dethroned the Tigers as they escaped with a 74-72 victory in the rubber match.

Though they in the end lost to FEU in the finals, that season will always be remembered as the year the Archers finally ended the Tigers’ 4-year reign.

2003 – DLSU (4) vs ADMU (1)
Barely making in the Final 4, the rookie-laden Green Archers appeared to have no chance of getting past through defending champion Ateneo, to whom they lost to twice in the eliminations. But then again when these two teams go head-on, past records and ranking are usually irrelevant.

The Green Archers scored a 76-72 win in the first game before finally yielding to the Blue Eagles 68-74 in the deciding match. This series was very physical with high emotions from both teams. Things got even uglier when the fans got into the fray. Though they lost, La Salle proved that even with a rebuilding roster, they can still contend.

The Eagles, they were eventually outclassed by the Tams in the finals. They were probably exhausted after being pushed to the limit by the Archers.

2010 – DLSU (4) vs FEU (1)
The Archers appear to be in the same situation as they were in 2003, placing 4th and going up against the top ranked team, this time the Tamaraws. In the first round, the rookie-laden Archers pushed FEU to the limit before yielding in double overtime. However, in the second round, we dealt the Tams their worst defeat in the tournament, a 14-point beating that proved that the Archers cannot be discounted even with a very young roster.

We are coming off two losses to UE and Adamson, while FEU came from behind to edge Ateneo in the battle for the top position. But when the game kicks off on Thursday, expect the Green Archers to fight tooth and nail to force a sudden death playoff. As they proved in our first 2 games, our team can compete effectively with the taller and more experienced Tams, and win.

Hopefully we will improve our record in this situation [where we don't have a twice to beat advantage] to 2-1. So let’s go to Araneta on Thursday and cheer on our team as they play for the glory and honor of La Salle!

ANIMO!

I remember that 1997 F4 game versus UST. Coach Aric del Rosario was choppered in from Pampanga and arrived early during the 2nd canto. His dramatic entrance did not help the Tigers cause as they faltered against Orfrecio and the Archers. Sorry but that was in 1998. Coach Aric was also coach of the Pampanga Dragons that time

I Believe in DLSU Greenarchers so much!!! I know we can win on Thursday, we can and we will! DLSU Basketball is the best! believe! ANIMO LASALLE! It's time to take back the crown! We believe you guys can do it!

I had preferred the Archers meet the Tams in the final 4 as we had a good 2 rounds with the Tams, with each team winning a game. The game in the first round could have gone to the Archers too! FEU is beatable!!

I AM GIVING THE MORAYTA- BASED SQUAD PLUS 5 TO WIN. B E L I E V E !!!! AN1MO LA SALLE!

Coach Dindo was my batchmate way back when he started playing for UAAP newbie DLSU in 1986. He poured his heart and energy when he played to help our weak team line-up. In 1988, Francisco-led ADMU beat us with him playing at point and we saw how he cried after the game. This is how he loved our team. I believe that he will steer us to multiple championships like what Franz did for us. The ball is round, I believe we will win this semis against FEU. Even though he didn't help bring DLSU to a championship when he was an Archer then, he'll do it this time as a Coach. I believe in Dindo...I believe in La Salle!!!!

Another David and Goliath story in the making. Yes we are going up against the #1 team FEU yet LaSalle can match up with them as we have seen in the 2 games in the elims. Hopefully we can do the same here in the Final Four. One game at a time. Let us focus first on Thursday's game and see what will happen next. Nevertheless it is a great season for the Archers. We will support you guys all the way. Show heart, focus and determination. Play like there will be no tomorrow. Just play your hearts out and show what La Salle basketball is all about. KEEP THE FAITH...ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

The 1st step La Salle should be able to make, in order to win the series, is to win Thursday's match. DLSU, despite having a very young team, can beat FEU. Here are my pointers if: 1. Defense- to shutdown FEU's offense, you got to shutdown RR Garcia and FEU guards. Contest every play and shot they make, don't allow them to be in transition. 2. Protect the paint- Who ever controls the paint, controls the court. DLSU's Big Men should match FEU's strong front court. Andrada, Paredes, and Mendoza will be the key. IF coach Dindo will give Villanueva more playing time, Maui should make sure he does his share of protecting the basket and controling the rebounds, which he failed to do in the elimination games despite being the team's rebound leader. The only reason why Maui is the leading rebounder is because Dindo gives him a lot of playing time 3. Floor General- You cant win games if your point guard commits turnovers and bad plays. Tolentino should improve more, and Vosotros has yet to mature. DLSU's guard's should, who are turnover and error prone, should limit errors and set the pace. Dela Paz is also a good candidate for play making. 4. Speeeeeeeeed- an advantage of having rookies is having young legs designed for speed. Outrun FEU and put the game on transition mode. 5. Go To GUYs- Atkins and Webb failed to live on the expectations. Now is the time to correct their mistakes and spark La Salle on both the defensive and offensive end. 6. X-Factors- Marata, should hit those threes in a high percentage, Tampus and Dela Paz should spark the fastbreaks, Mendoza should take the ball down to the post. La Salle can win this game. Good Luck to the Archers. ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

Although I'm postive, thing is, odds are against us. From the start of Final Four Playoffs in the UAAP. #4 NEVER won the series over the #1 seed. #1's swept the series 12 times. #4's put a scare on #1's, winning Game 1 to force a rubber match only 4 times (including La Salle's Game 1 win over Ateneo in 2003) but #1's came back on the rubber match all 4 times to secure a Finals berth though only on a narrow margin (+4.5 average). The highest margin of victory for #1 over #4 in a rubber match, would you believe is 6 points. Yes! Ateneo's 74-68 victory against La Salle in 2003 Final Four is the largest point differential for a rubber match between #1 and #4 tied with #1-UST's margin of victory over #4-FEU in their rubber match in 1995 Final Four, coincidentally the final score is 74-68. Other Final Four stats: #2 beat #3 62.5% of the time #2 swept #3 50% of the time #3 swept the #2 37.5% of the time Interestingly, #2 and #3 are tied 8-8 in Game 1 wins. And when #3 win Game 1, 75% of the time they won the series. History is not on our side. We would have a better chance of winning if we're at least #3. Though our point differential against #1-FEU is better (+10pts) than #2-Ateneo (-14pts) if it's DLSU-AdMU stats don't matter. Right? Oh well, what done is done. Our young guns have overachieved by reaching the Final Four but wouldn't it be nice to achieve some more? I think we can beat the #1-FEU and make history. It's do-able. Winning points: Defense and Free-throws. (Of course there are other points like offense and how and who needs to step up, and how Maui and Simon should perform well because they are the barometer of this team but Defense and Free-throws I think are the stress points VS FEU) Defense - For a team who has a system that revolves around defense, it's unacceptable that among the Final Four teams, we are only third in the points allowed category. Defense is necessary to win against a well-oiled offensive machine like FEU. Free-throws - La Salle's foul shooting woes are frustrating (to us fans and them players). There are lots of games where the missed free throws are more than our opponent's lead. One could wonder what could have happened if we're draining them freebies at the charity stripe. One of the keys in the 2nd round win against FEU: free-throws were dropping. Defense leads to offense, yes, but misadventures at the foul line disrupts the offensive rhythm. Steady offensive flow is what the team need to slay this giant. As intimidating as FEU may seem, the team did not inherit their coaches defensive prowess except maybe for Ramos (4.93 D-RPG, 2.07 BPG). FEU is last among the Final Four teams in points allowed per game. Remember they allowed La Salle to rack up 80 points on both occasion this season and that we're +10 against them. Steady offense is what this team need to exploit FEU's weakness: defense. It happened before. It can happen again. The pressure is on them. History may not be on our side but we can make history. ANIMO LA SALLE!

both series are memorable to me. 1997 wa memorable bcause we dethroned ust. in 2003 becaus it was a rookie laden team that faced all types off pressure(the kind that every la sallian feels when we go up against ateneo in a crucial match as the underdogs) and pushed the heavily favored blue eagles to the limit

Year 1997 is like Shohoku vs Sannoh Technology. Is Andrada allowed to play on Thursday?

time to get the win! Here we go...

Very memorable yung 1997. Just as when everyone from the UST side expected to beat the Archers due to the team's "choker" tag, Calijohn Orfrecio saved the day for La Salle as he nailed a crucial baseline jumper to deliver the victory for the Green Archers. Another sight to remember was Marvin Ortiguerra's post-game interview as the Jollibee best player of the game (if not, one of those post-game awards during that time). While being interviewed on TV, Marvin was still shedding tears as their reign as UAAP champs came to an end. It was just too unfortunate that we could not continue the run in the championship as the team lost to a too-much experienced FEU side boasted with the likes of Ronald Magtulis, Anastacio "Robin" Mendoza, Francis Adriano, and then-upcoming Edwin Bacani.
