The Green Mind – An Open Letter to the La Salle Green Archers

Yes we lost to FEU. Yes we have been eliminated. However, we still hold “OUR BANNER HIGH AND BRIGHT, A SHIELD OF GREEN AND WHITE.”

First and foremost, I and certainly all Lasallians are proud of what you all achieved this year. For that you deserve the Lasallian community’s admiration and gratitude. Like most people, me included, we thought that we would not even be in the Final Four. You all proved us wrong and this was one time where being wrong felt good. Whether you were a starter or hardly played at all, each and everyone of you deserve our deepest gratitude and respect. After what we went through last year, it felt great to be in the kind of atmosphere that true La Salle basketball is all about.

I would also like to thank and congratulate Br. Bernie Oca FSC for a great season. You made us proud as the host of this year’s UAAP tournament.

To Coach Dindo, congratulations on what you accomplished. It was a pleasant surprise that hardly anyone expected. You revived the Animo spirit that somewhat diminished after last year’s sorry performance. You took a team of 7 rookies, 4 sophomores and 5 veterans so close to a chance at the championship. We were 1 foul shot away from a 2nd game against FEU.

I’m sure there will be many who will be “after game coaches” and 2nd guess your moves and decisions especially at the end game of the 4th quarter and the overtime period. I have to admit that I have my own feelings about what should or should not have been done, but would rather keep that to myself as it is not the time to put blame on anyone but rather celebrate an unexpected accomplishment.

There is however one area that I cannot help but write about and that is about our horrendous foul shooting. I am writing about it because it has been going on for so long and yet nothing is being done to remedy the situation. It is not only my observation but an obvious flaw that the entire Lasallian community cannot understand.

This season, La Salle was 3rd in most free throws taken yet we were second to last in free throws made. We hit 58.9% of our free throws during the regular season. Only UP was worst than us. In today’s game we missed 18 free throws. That is really horrible

Free throws have been a curse to La Salle teams as far back as I can remember. I have played competitive basketball, even had a stint in the NCAA and fundamental foul shooting drills were as much a part of our practices as everything else. I was looking at the way the team shoots their free throws and most of them are so fundamentally unsound. The only ones that have basic fundamentals are Atkins, Mendoza and Vosotros. The rest do not.

I will not talk about any player but like most of the Lasallian community, I am dumbfounded on this free throw curse that La Salle seems to have. Our big men should be good foul shooters because their inside game will often get them fouled. Yet they are not able to contribute from the stripe. I honestly feel that most of the players have a phobia of going to the foul line because they assume they will miss the shot even before they even take it. If you notice the tremendous sight of relief that the players get when they make their foul shots, you will see that the pressure is really one of thier biggest problem

In a previous article, I wrote about two of the best NBA foul shooters, Larry Bird and Calvin Murphy. This is what they say about foul shooting.

“Larry Bird once said that foul shooting is an act of repetition. There are 3 things that makes one a good foul shooter. These are balance, taking your time and doing the what is effective the same way every time. Calvin Murphy. who had one of the best foul shooting percentages in NBA history mentions that effective foul shooting has 3 components. First your feet have to be parallel to each other because this gives you balance. Second you get your strength from bending your knees and third you get your direction from your arm. He adds that there should be a full extension of the arm after the ball is released. Murphy’s system is effective especially during endgame situations because the power from the knees does not diminish due to exhaustion.”

Other teams have improved their foul shooting yet we continue to slide. Being in the foul line is a lonely place to be. It can so pressure laden because you are all alone, nobody is guarding and thousands of people are shouting and cheering just to mess up your concentration. However that is part of the game and every player should learn to adjust to those circumstances. Pressure is no excuse for missing foul shot because it is always gonna be there. Most of this year’s team members will be back next year and if this single biggest problem we have will not be addressed it will continuously haunt us. We have already lost too many games because of horrible foul shooting. It’s time to take a very serious look at addressing this problem.

This early we are already looking forward to next year. We are all excited about the top calibe new players that are rumored to be joining the team. However if our foul shooting woes are not addressed, it will be a curse that will hound us until the moon turns blue.

Till next year…ANIMO LA SALLE!

Animo spirit is "SPIRIT" spirit. as you can see, spirit spirit=redundant. please change that statement, La Salle should not use animo spirit especially in open forums like this one.

Hi! I have a couple of questions which I hope you can answer. Can you give us an idea who the shoo ins will be for next year's seniors basketball team? Will Torres and Van Opstal finally suit up for the Green Archers? Is LA Rivilla re-joining the team? Will Simon Atkins still be playing next season? Who are the top rookies/recruits for the DLSU team next season? First of all it is too early to discuss any recruits for next year. Anything can still happen between now and July 2011. Second, there's no such thing as a shoo in as far as making the lineup

Hey TGM, I just want to know your opinion. Who do you think should be the starting PG next season and who will be our Go-To-Guy next year?

i agree. JOVET MENDOZA really stepped up his game this season. remember how he played during the second round match against ateneo? he literally was the only one scoring in the second half and he didn't seem like giving up despite the 20-point margin. and yes, the green archers may have overachieved this season, but they really have a lot to improve on in order to secure a finals slot next year. BRING BACK THE ANGAS, GUYS!!! i'm looking forward to the next UAAP season! i have high hopes for our team :)

I agree with johni!! Jovet is definitely one of my favorites - very hardworking, relatively consistent, and very unappreciated. Til next year, then! Animo La Salle!!

While the archers are contemplating on hiring a shooting coach, the current coaching staff should ask Jovet Mendoza (my guy!) how he is doing it. In my opninion he is the most consistent archer in the free throw area.

The FEU basketball team is veteran-laden and full of clutch players. Our team is the opposite. However, ours is a team full of energy, youth and heart. We lost that game because they missed a lot of freethrows in regulation. We blew a golden opportunity again. We lost 2 straight prior to the Final Four and that I thought could've been the chance to correct the mistakes. We've been losing most of the important games thru horrible free throw shooting since we joined this league. The only period we had it so good was when we won 4 straight. Beating La Salle in close games is very easy now. If the NBA has a Hack-a-Shaq, our version here in the Philippines is a Hack-a-La Salle player. I am hopeful though this will end soon - permanently. Make it a thing of the past.

@ dlsudiehard: That's a great idea! This is the best time to help the Green Archers as a community. We can probably ask Lim Eng Beng to be the shooting coach (take note that we do not just need shooters- we need scorers) and Noli Locsin to help out in developing our big men. However, sometimes we should also be practical by setting aside our pride in order to bring progress to our program. For instance, if Lim Eng Beng wouldn't be available to help out because of commitments elsewhere, we can tap Bogs Adornado to do job. The reason why other teams (e.g. Ateneo, NU) were able to progress with their respective programs was because of the fact that they were able to come up with practical decisions which eventually led to good things for their teams.

if our coaches are looking for true green blooded freethrow coaches, they could not look any further than the halls of DLSU where they can find two retired jerseys of two notoriously very good freethrow shooters, lim eng beng and ren ren ritualo. from time to time they watch the games live and the coaching staff can easily get in contact with them. Lim eng beng, during his days in the pba was adept at fishing fouls from opposing players and made a living on the free throw line in the 70's and 80's. and most of us still remember how ren ren performed at the freethrow line during his uaap days. maybe he could help our players during his off days. with all due respect to adornado and engelland, but lim and ritualo played, fought and won for the green and white in the big time tournaments. Lim in the ncaa, ritualo in the uaap

"Offense wins games Defense wins championships" Still, offense & defense without decent foul shooting will be disastrous! Let's get a free throw coach! !

Yay! Looks like good things are in the horizon for the archers. Regarding Marata, I feel that Almond Vosotros is more effective as the go to guy of the team. Medyo one-dimensional pa laro ni Marata! Let's see what happens this "offseason". I see great things for Vosotros, De La Paz, Mendoza and Tampus! I can't wait for season 74!!!

I hope the coaching staff does not take the comments here as negativity but as feedback to assist them. I have faith in them but introspection and criticism never hurt as long as it's of the constructive kind which I think is the case here. There's next year and there's the PCCL. Confidence is important to a young team and we might need to win these minor tournaments since 14 games might not be enough time to develop confidence and chemistry.

Great year for our GREEN ARCHERS!!! with all the young guys, they managed to be #4. If not for the inexperience, we would have snatched more wins. But hey, it's all part of the learing process. Let's look forward to a better, more mature team next year! Hopefully, the new additions next year will be at par with what the other schools will bringing in. We not only need a big man's coach BUT WE NEED A TRUE BIG MAN that will be coached. We need someone who can match up with Slaughter and the African big men. Agian, Congratualtion to the GREN ARCHERS!!! We are proud of you guys, and we are proud to be LA SALLIANS!! ANIMO LA SALLE!!!!

Tinigilan ko na din ang pag aanalyze ng games because for me the archers are the best players: Emotionally ready, spiritually prepared, physically tall/handsome/cute/funny..a real well-rounded personality....napapa alleluia nga ako pag nakaka shoot si ferdinand...... What is lacking is just pure luck....God has a reason for everything

The recto circle of schools are not just pesky players, they look notorious to me and they have that attitude even in the pba, just look at the way tubid and artadi plays, they can make the shots but they are most remembered as doing the dirty work of fouling a player.... For the rest of the season the archers are cool minded, although talaga Lang pang inis si Josh but he is starting to mature the later part of the season. As for me, tinigilan ko na ang pag eemote, I didn't even felt sorry when they lost, I felt more sorry sa tams because they have not learned the value of winning fair and clean, ESP the veterans who have shown their rudeness all for the sake of winning tsk tsk di na natuto, panahon pa ni arwind ganon na sila kadumi maglaro....mAtalo sana kau sa finals....

A team of SEVEN ROOKIES and FOUR SOPHOMORES make it into the Final 4 and come this close to upsetting the tournament favorites... and they're only going to get better... The future looks bright for the Green Archers. Everything's true about the FT shooting. But there's also that winning attitude that demands focus and humility as much as drive and hustle. If the Archers can get that into their heads, then well, guess which team I see taking the championship next year? REKTIKANO RAH. AN1MO LA SALLE.

WE WILL BE CHAMPS NEXT SEASON! DLSU! ANIMO LA SALLE!

Just finished watching the replay on the internet as i am out of the country. Sayang, the pressure was just too much for the boys. Indeed, free throws. Congratulations on a good showing this Season. Looking forward to the next.

TGM, Do you think Ferdinand will be back next season or will his slot be given to a more deserving player?

@ Sir Tony: It's nice to know that Noli Locsin has already expressed his intention to help the team, especially in developing our big men. Like what I said in my previous post, our big men have what it takes to go up against the bigs of other teams. That can only be realized if and only if we will have a good big man coach- something that we can, hopefully, find in Noli Locsin. As for Bogs Adornado being tapped for free throw shooting coaching free of charge, that's another great news! It's time that we end our infamous free throw shooting problems. Our game against FEU yesterday should be more than enough for Coach Dindo and the coaching staff to realize the need to solve the free throw shooting problem of the team once and for all. On Marata, I dunno if you were able to observe this yesterday but it seemed to me that the team had suddenly become too dependent on him during the dying minutes of the game. A lot of our plays were centered on Marata even if it's glaring that he hasn't recovered his shooting touch yet (take note that this kid is NOT a consistent outside shooter). Lastly, on Tampus, what is going on with that kid? Kahit simpleng lay-up na lang, hindi pa niya maipasok. May times din na hindi siya nag-iisip. Tampus, along with some of our players, should realize that basketball is also a mind game- pautakan ang labanan.

@tecapten: You are absolutely right about the turnovers. Its an enigma to me that we can cause turnovers from our opponents yet we in turn give the ball back with our own turnover. Inbound passing alone caused us 2 losses this year. @Nick Diggler: I agree that the coaching staff should also be congratulated. However if we expect the players to find ways to to improve then that should also apply to the coaching staff that Dindo presently has. Its nothing personal but changes and improvements need to be made if we expect the players to bring their game to a higher level.

@TGM: i think the entire coaching staff still deserved a pat on the back given the load of rookies we have... if they will be retained, it will be a big challenge to each member of dindo's staff to improve the players' conditioning, free throws and defensive techniques... this is why we need the basketball program to start regrouping and train early for next year... after LARRY BIRD (and the Celtics) last beat the Lakers for the NBA Championship, he only took a break for just a few days... then trained right away for the next season... @Lou: i believe Engelland along with Dennis Still and Jeff Moore also attended DLSU during his stint with the national team... :) he was also Steve Kerr's shooting coach... deadly...

it's heartbreaking to see our poor FT shooting yesterday... couldve won the game! wouldve won the game!... but nevertheless, it's not too late to improve.. we still have years to conquer with this same lineup... from my POV, here are things i think the archers need to focus on besides FT shooting for next season: - crashing the board/box out - i'm not impressed by how we gang rebound... there were cases where 3 or 4 archers are in the paint but one lingering opponent gets the ball instead... - TOs - we need to limit our TOs to minimum.. we have so many unforced errors and i hope our guards focus on taking care of the leather - offensive play - i always see the motion offense but seldom do i see a clear cut offense and good looks wherein players are comfortable shooting or slashing the ball - most of the time they're tentative. that's all for me... good luck next year!

It was a good season despite the loss yesterday. Congratulations to the team and the coaching staff. I know we will do better next season.

Aside from the FT shooting, what about the attitude of a few players when we had the lead? How many times have we seen it? The team that prematurely celebrates (almost) always ends up losing. 40 minutes of focus. And humility, please. That's why Renren and JV led us to several championships.

Look at it this way. This year's basketball season is a "preview" of what's in store for next year. If we got this far with 7 rookies and 4 sophomores, what more next season? More reasons to FEAR THE GREEN. :D Guys, do keep in mind that the UAAP season is still not over. We still have other games to cheer for. Football, volleyball, etc... ANIMO LA SALLE!

@Nick Diggler: All your points on foul shooting are right on the money. However your statement "SEASON 74 BEGINS TOMORROW, NOT NEXT YEAR!!!!" hits the bulls eye. Coach Dindo has to make changes in his staff. The good of the team stands above personal loyalties. Some of the changes may not sit well with those that will be replaced but if they truly are green blooded, they should accept that they need a change in the staff. As a coach, Dindo has done a terrific job, but now its time to evaluate the coaching staff.

...i myself had problems with my free throw shooting... i had to re-learn to shoot in the proper form... it's important to know the placement of both feet, the number of dribbles, keeping your eye on the target, the position of your ELBOW, the placement of your FINGERS on the ball and finishing it off with the right FLICK OF THE WRIST... perfecting the free throw doesn't just happen in a few days... it takes a thousand shots and months of practice to get into the right rhythm and flow... correcto, LARRY BIRD is the best example of a player having the proper free throw form... everything is automatic... everything went well with DLSU until the final two minutes of regulation... Glenn Capacio's ploy of sending the Archers to the free throw line helped FEU regain their confidence up to the extra period... having the a close game in a FINAL FOUR builds character and DLSU just needs a few tweaks to become a formidable team next year... going through four tough quarters last night is too much for a very young team... even if Mendoza hit that shot at the buzzer... DLSU will grind it out for another game with these rough Tamaraws.... i admire these Archers for keeping their heads cool despite those aggressive moves like that EXCAMINIANO dude... those are the type of pesky players i hate... but, you need to find a way to play under that kind of duress... the offseason will be crucial for DLSU.... it is the best time to improve the program and correct all the obvious flaws... i hope this website will continue to monitor all the improvements of the basketball team during the offseason... so, for us, SEASON 74 BEGINS TOMORROW, NOT NEXT YEAR!!!! ANIMO...

Good game Archers, nothing to be ashamed of and i hope next year our new batch of big men will impose their might.....Marata will be our main man next year and it will be a blast from the giant men from Taft next year!!!!

Yes I agree, let's work hard and play hard next year. It's nice to know that Noli Locsin will help. Free throws and rebounds is what we lacked yesterday. We almost had it. Still proud of our school and our team. Animo La Salle!

@Arch: Yes Atkins is still eligible next year and he mentioned to me he will come back. @Procopio Porciuncula - Noli Locsin has already signified his willingness to help. We need a big man coach who can teach the bigs pick and roll plays and proper positioning in boxing out and receiving drop passes. About foul shooting: I have talked to some other coaches and even a former manager of a PBA team and one of the best free throw coaches is Bogs Adornado. He may not be a good head coach but when it comes to free throws, he is said to be the best. After yesterday's game, an alumnus offered to get Adornado's services for La Salle at no cost to the school. We should really consider this. His son studies in La Salle.

If we would like to invest in a good shooting coach, ask Chip Engelland (currently Asst. Coach Spurs)for a 2-week shooting seminar that would analyze not only the free throws but the jump shots tery and mid-range. He has a consultancy firm called Chip Shots (312) 837-6500. I am sure he will consider this given that he still is a naturalized pinoy (played for the Phil Team) and owes much to DLSU alumni Danding C.

Season 73 is a great season for the Green Archers. Who else would have thought that this very young La Salle team would make it into the Final Four? The boys are able to beat expectations and prove their critics wrong. Congratulations to them! I concur with the opinion on the team's horrible free throw shooting. There are times when games are being won on the free throw line. The game against FEU yesterday was one of them. With that now water under the bridge, hopefully the free throw shooting of the Green Archers would improve next season. Lastly, can we get a new big man coach for the team? No offense to Tonichi Yturri pero napapag-iwanan tayo ng ibang teams dahil habang nag-iimprove ang big man nila (with Norman Black in Ateneo and Bobby Parks in NU doing WONDERS for thei big men), yung sa La Salle ay parang wala lang. I believe that Torres, Van Opstal, Organ, Andrada, Paredes, Mendoza, Villanueva and even Ferdinand have what it takes to match-up with the likes of Slaughter, Mbe, Ramos, Manyara, Nlepe-Nlepe and Alinko as long as they would be given the right mentoring that big men should get- something that, in my opinion, Tonichi failed to do. If La Salle couldn't get Noli Locsin or Jun Limpot to develop our big men, then, I guess, we should also go the American way similar to what Ateneo and NU did when they tapped coaches for to develop their big men.

I agree with your sentiments regarding our foul shooting. Sayang! Nevertheless it was a great season. Kudos to the basketball team from the coaching staff to the players. ANIMO LA SALLE! I was wondering who are rumored to join La Salle next year? Is Van Opstal going to play next year? From what I heard recruitment is tight for next year; African imports are going to suit up for UP and UST as well as reinforcement for FEU courtesy of Noundou's cousin and not to mention 6'11" Center Greg Slaughter suiting up for our Katipunan-based archrival. I hope we could get a really good consistent slasher or someone on our team could develop into being one. Candidates I think would be Dela Paz, Tampus and Webb. Though I think Webb's slashing game is what my friends call "Checked". I notice that on our last three games. The team had trouble scoring in the 2-3 zone. The penetration is almost absent. Besides the team's misadventures and the free throw line. The team's somehow inability to score against the 2-3 zone is the other key to our losses. Another player I think La Salle's missing is a go-to guy. Yes we have guys who occasionally steps up from time to time during some stretch but we need a steady go-to guy who can provide an offensive punch a la Cardona, Yeo, Casio. I think we kind of lost the swagger the those players from yesteryears have and use to intimidate opposing teams. What a great year our centennial year could be if we could win it all. GREEN AND WHITE FIGHT!

@TGM is Atkins still eligible next year? Thanks!

Yes, you are right on the money. Our free throw shooting is indeed atrocious! It started right in the first round of the eliminations and people already called the coaching staff's and players attention to it for some improvement. It seemed to have gotten worse in the second round and in the Final 4 yesterday. Although we were murdered in the rebounding department by FEU in yesterday's game, I feel that we still would've won in regulation if we hit our free throws. If you look back at all the games, we would've easily made it to the number 2 or even number 1 seed if not for poor free throw shooting. The team should hit at least 70% of their free throws each game to make it a potent weapon especially in the crucial last 3 minutes of the game. If we dont' improve in this department, all UAAP teams will easily resort to the "Hack-an-Archer" strategy to force us to the foul line and make those shots the hard way. Sayang na sayang talaga! Anyway, I'm still very proud of the team and what it has accomplished this season. I hope they win the title next year during La Salle's centennial year. I'm still looking forward to the third place match. Animo La Salle!

yeah I agree. if they shot all that free throw shots we would win the game. but it is just a big surprise that we reached the final four even when others keep pulling us down from the very start of this season. i was just wondering why people say na "luto" ang game kapag lasalle ang nananalo or lumalamang? can't they accept that the underdogs can win and prove them wrong? congratulations to the team ang I hope Simon would still play next season :)

FT% should improve next year, still the Archers overachieved this season and KUDOS to that!

Regarding the freethrow shooting - AMEN to that!! After yesterday's game, I was thinking about those many missed freethrows, which could have helped seal a victory & set the stage for another do-or-die game. Yet I'm also proud of our basketball team. Thank you Archers for a remarkable job this year. I'm excited for the coming seasons. ANIMO LA SALLE!!
