La Salle-Dasmarinas failed in its bid to end its campaign in the Universities and Colleges Athletic Association in style after bowing to season host Olivarez College, 82-72, at the latter’s home floor in Sucat, Paranaque. The Patriots, who were eliminated on Monday by Colegio de Sta Monica, lost steam in the fourth quarter as the Sea Lions, the reigning champions of the National Capital Region Athletic Association, pulled away to snare third place.
Josiah Fordan, a first-year Communication Arts student, led the way for the Cavite-based cagers with 21 points while ace scorer Marlito Escobal tallied 18 points. Guard Harold Vinluan added 15 while big man Rudy Onde added 12 points for the squad coached by long-time mentor Ephraim Serrano.
The loss still assured DLSU-D its best finish since 2005, when it lost to Emilio Aguinaldo College in the finals. Prior to this season, the Patriots endured four consecutive seasons without a semifinals berth, including a string of back-to-back fifth place finishes.
Philip dela Cruz had 21 points while guard Richard Reyes frustrated the Patriots with 16 of his 19 points in the payoff period to lead the Olivarez cagers. DLSU-D will take a two-month rest before it competes in the 19th NCRAA tournament which is expected to start in November.
