Fil-Oil Game 1: Archers Fall to Tigers

The Green Archers endured a rough start in their pre-season preparations, losing out to the new-look UST Tigers, 70-79 at the Arena this afternoon. The Archers struggled all game long, and tasted the lead only in the early minutes of the game before UST uncorked a barrage of triples courtesy of former Junior Archer Jeric Fortuna to wrest the lead which they never relinquished.

Rusty from the layoff from active competition, the Archers failed to control the tempo of the game. UST ran whenever possible, and repeatedly eluded their defenders to hit 43% of their 2point field goal attempts while battling the Green Archers to a draw on the boards. The Archers’ trademark pressure defense was erratic in today’s game, occasionally forcing the Tigers into shot clock time pressure but also allowing UST to hoist 32 attempts from the 3-point area, of which they made 10. The press failed to make a difference and UST coughed up the ball only 15 times. In contrast, our ball handling and passing was off, leading to our team’s 17 turnovers. This could partly be due to the absence of LA Revilla and Almond Vosotros, two reliable ball handlers and distributors.

The Archers’ touch from the field also was missing. They only made 5 out of 22 attempts from the 3point area, leading to a 15 point differential from the long court. The free throw woes have not yet been addressed – the team collectively misfired on 14 freebies out of 35 attempts.

This year’s team is taller than last year’s Archers with the addition of Van Opstal and Torres, but the team found itself unable to win the battle of the boards. Perhaps it’s the lack of conditioning, but the Archers were a step slower on the hustle plays, and failed to box out the Tigers who tallied 17 offensive rebounds.

Top performers for the Archers were Jovet Mendoza, who was his usual energetic self in the paint for 15 points including a triple, Norbert Torres with 11 points of which 6 came from long range, Simon Atkins who contributed 10 points even as he alternated at the point, and Luigi dela Paz who poured in 10 points.

Among the rookies, Torres and Van Opstal showed the most energy, pounding the boards for a total of 9 rebounds and banging bodies with the UST bigs. Dan Sara showed flashes of his ability, but was a bit over-eager on offense and had a rocky debut in a big tournament as a college player. Alfonzo Gotladera showed a nifty spin move to score, but saw limited action in only 9 minutes. Michael Pate and Louie Vigil were used sparingly and failed to score.

Coach Dindo fielded 15 players out of the roster of 20, giving the rookies that much-needed exposure. Six rookies saw action, led by Norbert Torres (21 minutes), Dan Sara (15 minutes), Van Opstal (11 minutes), Gotladera (9 minutes), Pate (4 minutes), and Vigil (2 minutes) for a total of 62 minutes. Marata, Revilla, Reyes, Herrera and Vosotros did not play. Playing time was spread over the team, and no player spent more than 23 minutes on the floor. Defensive stalwarts Maui Villanueva and Papot Paredes were non-factors, contributing only 4 rebounds, and 2 points in a collective 20 minutes on the court.

Coming off a finals week and unable to practice as a complete team, the Archers were out of sync and lacked their usual intensity and energy. The play was occasionally ragged and out of control, and UST capitalized on the apparent lack of communication and tight teamwork to regain control at the endgame after the Archers had managed to claw back to within 3 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Scores:

UST  (79) – Fortuna 20, Afuang 19, Bautista 16, Ferrer 14, Abdul 6, Pe 2, Tan 2

DLSU (70) – Mendoza 15, Torres 11, Atkins 11, dela Paz 10, Tampus 5, Andrada 4, Sara 4, Van Opstal 3, Elorde 2, Villanueva 2, Gotladera 2, Webb 1

Quarter scores: 17-22, 33-47, 54-57, 70-79

Coach Dindo is a good coach. The only problem on coach dindo was the rotation of players. Kailangan may solid 5 na ibabad kapag crucial na. Joshua Webb needs playing time and more touches. Tulad nina Mac Cardona,Joseph Yeo,Mike Cortez before. More time on the floor. More talents will come out from La Salle. Animo Spirit will came back kapag binago ni coach Dindo ang style nya na napakabilis na rotation ng players.

green archers celebrate the new green arrow movie :-)

A bit OT: Heard before that there would be an exhibition game between the Green Archers and the Blue Eagles in Dubai, is this true? If so, would there be coverage? (live or delayed telecast, twitter feed etc?)

who won in the juniors game?

La Salle Zobel by 20 points

Isa lang naman ang gusto ko makita sa unang game ng DLSU and this is if their free throws improved from crap (sorry for the term) to decent. Pero hindi pa din, nasai na lahat ng mga kailangan gawin. But the good thing I noticed is that AVO is in good shape and luigi seemed to be hitting the weight room. Ineexpect ko talaga na the free throws cannot get any worse than last season.

Despite all the explanations on why the lost, the game sort of gave us how much to expect from the team in this tournament and in the forthcoming UAAP. I am not even hopeful about the US trip. It may be a good recruiting bait but not sure how helpful that program really is.

The out-of-sorts archers were disappointing to watch. I cannot see a miracle happening yet in season 74. It looks like Ateneo's 4-peat chances are pretty solid. Just some constructive criticisms: our foul shooting should really improve (seems like this has not been addressed from 2 seasons ago), the coach's rotation was really out of synch (van Opstal, Torres and Andrada were given very little time on court) and we still could not solve the 2-3 zone (we must learn our lesson from season 73)!

BASTA BUMAWI SA UAAP!!! NO TO 4-PEAT!!!! ANYONE BUT ATENEO!!!!!!

Just my two cents worth: To everyone who feels disappointed over this loss: RELAX! There are games where in the lessons you will learn far outweigh the results of the scoreboard. This game was one of them. The team lost to UST. Weak team daw sila, we should've ran circles around them. So many shoulds ifs and buts. What the team needs is exposure and time to play together as a unit. I agree with Proud Archer. We didn't need to win this game. Heck, we don't even have to win this tournament. But the team needs to work on different aspects of their game. Use all the experiments, test all kinds of strengths and pinpoint all weaknesses. I'd rather the team loose now, make all the mistakes and learn, than win all the games and feel invincible only to falter in the UAAP season. Ateneo, whether we like it or not, is a really strong team. Ravena blew my mind away. Slaughter...errrr..not so much!!! Bottomline, they have a mission and they will work their butts off to accomplish it. Like us, they will use this tournament to learn. So let's not get ahead of ourselves and be too over-excited or too frustrated. We have to let our minds play over our pride. This ain't the real battle yet. Good job, Green Archers. I'm sure you've seen points to improve in this game. You were able to pull within 3. That's ok, but there's work to be done, so rip it off during practice. I believe we can go all the way. This is a very strong team and if we can work together and play 100% all the time, then we will halt that 4-peat run of Ateneo. Animo La Salle!!! P.S. Why didn't LA, Sam and Almond suit up for the game?

thanks. i hope they get well soon. i missed their plays :)

I, personally, think that our veterans aren't playing their butts off in this game with the exception of Jovet Mendoza since he has been one of the most dedicated players in the team. Webb was rather disappointing since he only scored a point and had so many failed attempts, to think that he is one of the veterans and we expect a lot from him. Atkins, as a captain, is doing good but he needs to do better. Same goes with Dela Paz and Tampus. Andrada should start doing those amazing blocks he did last season again, but I think he should know how to score also since he's not really much of a scorer. It would really help if he can both block and score. I must say that the rookies are showing so much potential. Torres is very good with offense but again he needs to work for the defense part. Van Opstal is a good center but he should know how to score more. Dan Sara is good but I think he would work well with LA Revilla. I've seen a game (practice game against San Beda) with Dan Sara and LA Revilla and they can both work well together. Probably because of their similar height and high level of speed. Free throwing must be improved, as of what Proud Archer said. Free throwing can help add up points. Seriously. Never underestimate a free throw. We might actually win by a single free throw, even if it's just by a point. Team work must be enhanced too. Without teamwork, nothing's gonna happen. WE ALSO NEED OUR OLD BREATHTAKING AND SUFFOCATING DEFENSE BACK. We are known for that, what the hell is happening? Last but not the least, the intensity and energy must be boosted. Without that, nothing's gonna happen to the game. I just hope that by UAAP season, the team will be so hyped up and prepared for the games. They are representing DLSU. They have to be in the Final 4 AGAIN. This was the team that broke the Final 4 Streak. They should make up for the disappointment they gave the La Salle crowd and the old La Salle players. This season should be OUR season. WHO THE HELL CARES ABOUT KIEFER RAVENA AND THAT 7 FOOTER GUY? Don't let them get in the way to success. They're just normal human beings too. The team can defeat them. Always remember the parable about DAVID AND GOLIATH. Well, literally there's a Goliath in the Ateneo team... With teamwork, hard work, and passion, the team can win the game. It's up to them if they want to play really really well. ANIMO LA SALLE!

Like I said, don't look for wins just yet. We are feeling our way into playing as a team while scouting for the other teams. Ateneo looks formidable. Maybe. But remember, we did not have our top guards Revilla, Vostros, and Atkins was out of sync yesterday. Torres is a very good offensive threat but a little slow on defense. Van Opstal is showing a lot of potential and seems to be in better shape that the rest of the team, with the exception of Jovet Mendoza. Like I commented previously, our outside shooting will play a key role in our campaign. Marata did not play, did he? And we lost Joel Tolentino, another outside threat. But one thing is sure though. If we do not hit 70% of our free throws, we will never ascend to where we should be. 15 misses is atrocious. Greg Slaughter scored 16 of his 26 points from the foul line. Count it again. 15 missed free throws. We lost by nine but they were more of garbage points. We cut the lead down to three at one point. Free throw shooting woes is the monster we HAVE TO exorcise. Else, let's just forget it. It's still a journey. A long road ahead to the UAAP tournament. This is OUR season. It's up to US to take it. Nobody will give it to us. ANIMO!
