Hard-fighting Archers absorb second loss against Stags

The word ‘Hustle’ was the battlecry of the Green Archers for today’s game against the defending champion San Sebastian Golden Stags, as the players and the staff constantly yelled the word in one accord in team huddles during time-outs.

Yet when the game came down to its final moments, it was the big men of the Stags who showed hustle, making baskets and securing rebounds down the stretch as the hard-fighting Archers absorbed their second loss at the Fil-Oil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup, 88-81.

With the Stags ahead by only four, 85-81, Luigi Dela Paz missed a three-pointer that would have pulled them within a point. Calvin Abueva, who erupted for 28 points and 18 rebounds, and teammate Ian Sangalang then sank pressure-packed free throws to secure the Stags’ first victory of the tournament.

In a game that featured a combined 48 fouls and 41 turnovers from both teams, the Archers battled back from a 16-point deficit early in the third quarter to take the lead early in the final period, 74-72, on a running lay-up by guard LA Revilla.

The Stags, however, quickly swung the lead back to their favour on a three-pointer by Ron Pascual from the right corner. Both teams traded baskets throughout the quarter, until the defending champions carved a seven-point lead, 85-78, that forced mentor Dindo Pumaren to sue for time.

Senior Simon Atkins nailed his second three-pointer of the game to trim the lead to four, setting the stage for the cardiac finish.

Emotions ran high in the third canto, and, with 3:27 left and the Stags up by 11, 66-55, Abueva and Archer Ponso Gotladera received warnings from trash talking, which also did not please Pumaren. Center Michael Miranda and Sangalang were also slapped with unsportsmanlike fouls early in the quarter.

This sequence seemed to fire up the Archers as they mounted a furious comeback that saw them close the quarter on an emphatic 12-3 binge led by Dela Paz and Revilla that cut the lead of the Stags to two, 70-68.

The Archers also cut the lead to two near the end of the first half, 42-40, on a putback by Andrada, but the Stags held the Archers without a field goal for the first six minutes of the third to build a sizeable lead.

The loss, however, does not indicate that the Taft-based squad played a bad game.

Luigi Dela Paz continued to be the most consistent player for the Archers in the tournament as he topscored for the team with 16 markers. Revilla and Mendoza both dropped nine points. Andrada, Atkins, Joseph Marata and Papot Paredes all scored six points, and six other Archers scored at least two points as the game proved to be another testament to the depth of the squad.

La Salle actually shot the ball better at 41% compared to the slightly lower 39% of the Stags. They also had more steals, 9-2, forced more turnovers, 21-20, and translated those turnovers into 19 points as compared to the 13 of the Stags.

They, however, lost the battle of the boards, 51-44, and gave up more fouls, 30-18, which the Stags translated to 23 points on the line in 32 attempts. The Archers, meanwhile, made just 14 of their 24 trips to the line.

Rookie Watch:

Arnold Van Opstal, despite seeing limited minutes, hauled down eight rebounds to pace the Archers along with two points off charities. Dan Sara scored on a trey and a jump shot, had a couple of takeaways, an assist and a rebound. Gotladera scored in the third quarter as part of the Archer rally, while Norbert Torres scored during the early goings and had a free throw. Louie Vigil, who is back in the line-up, as well as Michael Pate, did not see action.

Up Next:

The next game for the Archers will be nearly a month from now, a May 25 date with the revamped and undefeated National University Bulldogs.

Sir, is it true that louie vigil is no longer with DLSU?? sayang nmn...

wala na pala so elorde, lumipat sa ADMU

This would be a good rotaion: C VAn Opstal Mendoza Paredes PF Andrada Villanueva Gotladera SF Marata Webb Torres Vigil(if Possible) SG Dela Paz Vosotros Tampus PG Atkins Revilla Sara/Elorde Elorde(if Possible) =@10d4075642972c444233b730b3e88fd9:disqus I think it would be better if Dela Paz would be in SG and Atkins PG because Dela Paz has a slashing moves and Atkins don't have and Atkins as they said that he is a pass first guard... =at the starters...Van Opstal will take the starting C because of his leaping abitlity( I saw his vid in you tube),In PF its Andrada because,of his improvement(may jumper na siya)and shot blocking skills...SF would be Marata(for me I would call him mr.3pts) he can really hit you from the 3pt area and may give you a lead kaagad,in SG I think Dela Paz would be a great factor in this S74...parang ang stats nya this filoil invitational games ay mataas(in terms of points)...and of course Mr.captain himself Simon Atkins who has a breakout year last season...if you can observe Atkins is in PG not in SG but if Dela Paz will leave the floor and Revilla will checks in Atkins will move to SG =About Webb, bakit ilalagay sya sa Team B...Webb is the leading scorer ata in S72 if hindi ako nagkakamali...(nabasa ko yung Animo mag in our school)and he is the finals MVP in the juniors division....and he is the 3rd Generation Webb...and we need veterans and when Atkins will leave, i think siya ang magiging captain or either Maui =if the coach will put another rookie it would be Torres in SF/PF...pwede syang SF dahil he can hit 3s but yung lineup mabagal... =about Elorde...i think dapat team A parin siya dahil sanay na siya sa system... and ang pagpipilian kng sino pupunta sa Team B it would be Sara or Vigil...If Sara: loaded yung PG spot...If Vigil:dapat trained tlaga sya para next yr na wala na si atkins... we have a great weapon(Juniors MVP naman siya diba)... =ang advantage natin ay yung experience we just lost Tolintino at walang grumaduat.. remember nung s72 ay nagstruggle yung team dahil kahit they are talented they have no experience...katulad lng to sa profile ng Boston Celtics...

i'm excited to see Van Opstal in the court,i see he will be a huge instrument 4 La Salle this year.Go Atkins and the rookie Joemar Sumalinog,no,i'm just kidding.Keep up the good work 4 the team and to the whole coaching staff. And Mr.Canicosa, claiming a victorious year for your community and to the University. In JESUS NAME!!

IMHO, the first 5 and bench rotation for DLSU this year will be as follows: STARTING 5: PG/SG- DELA PAZ - Attacking PG who can set plays, shoot outside, and has matured vs. last year SG/PG- ATKINS - Although inconsistent outside (but is also streaky once he gets his groove), he is undeniably the stabilizer of the team given his experience and his voice in the court is listened to by the others. And amongst all guards he is the pass first shoot later guard. SF/PF- ANDRADA - His length and height and speed for his size makes him a defensive gem at the wing and post positions. Although he lacks offensive moves he overly makes up for it with his defensive effort and hustle. He can play 3,4, and 5 which makes the team tall and flexible depending on the opponent. PF/SF- MENDOZA - He has vastly improved his range and outside touch and he is still the reliable defensive anchor of the team in the post. Most fans and spectators fail to see that he was the only big man who led the team in taking offensive charges and has clamped down the opponents best forwards and has made their offense miserable. He can slide down to 3 because he has slashing moves, although it is dependent on who will guard him. More importantly, Only he, Maui and Andrada are the bigs who are willing to get dirty and physical in the paint. Look for him to be the post presence and perimeter presence that the team is looking for. And lastly, IMHO, HE WILL BE THE KING ARCHER THIS YEAR. He is a quiet yet very effective player both offensively and defensively. If you look at the stat sheets last year, he is the most consistent player offensively even if the team was loosing and badly beat. He would have taken home a lot of Best Player of the Game awards if only they won those games. Looking forward this coming season specially that he has upgraded his built and his offensive arsenal. I am predicting that he will be like TY TANG, who has exploaded offensively on his last 2 years for the team. C- TORRES - Height, Body and semblance of outside touch plus a little bit of post moves but he is still a project in the making. He still needs to learn to play physical. BENCH ROTATION (Priority per position): PG- Vosotros, Revilla - Revilla has the maturity and "experience" while Vosotros is like Atkins, Pass first shoot later type of Guard. SG- Marata - Marata on good days gives DLSU the much needed outside threat but if his day is bad then look for the bigs to take the lead. His mere presence in the court opens up the floor for the bigs and wings of the team. SF- Tampus, Villanueva - Although Tampus is a bit small for this position, he makes it up with his athleticism and CONTROLLED energy which rubs of the team. Hopefully 1 yr. playing experience has taught Tampus on when to attack and when not to attack and when to pass the ball to the bigs. Maui will be converted to the 3 spot because of his height and speed that can match with the quicker wing players of the other teams. Although he has limited offense, his defense will be crucial and his hustle on the boards would make him a regular rotation player specially if they are playing big teams. PF/C - AVO, Gotladera, Papot - AVO, although young has the athleticism and height. Gotladera is the teams project for the post. His offensive arsenal is solely dedicated for the post, although he still needs to bulk up. Papot??... Well hes young... and soft... and when things get dirty inside he doesnt stand up and he cant match with physical players. Dont be blinded with his blocks last year.. He is really soft in the paint.. OTHERS: WEBB - Depending on who they play, his speed can be used but over-all he has become a liability on both offense and defense. Very predictable offensive move, plays defense poorly (Sanga's shot over Webb last season), his emotion and "angas" is out of place, he cant control his game and he doesnt know when to pass the ball... The chemistry of the team in the court gets jeopardized when he plays..

Webb should give up his place and go back to Team B. He thinks he's a superstar and has annoying antics in the court.

Our rookies are in dire need of experience. this tournament will address that need, but they have to learn quickly. IMHO, i think si torres masyadong malambot, si sara masyadong gigil, si avo at gotladera masyadong nakaupo...dapat yang mga yan ang binababad sa liga kasi learning curve to...true, they will have to fight for playing time come uaap, but right now, they have to get their minutes...i agree, webb should be used sparingly in this league...buty he will be vital in the uaap. if he controls his antics and focuses more on what he does best--catch the ball from a cut and lay it in or on a mismatch fastbreak--then he will provide more options for the coaches and more headaches for the opposing teams. Are they in the US already? I hope they get drilled like crazy. Especially on FTs.

The boys will be ready come UAAP season... ITs just a pre-season tournament... Its better to loose now than loose in the actual tournament proper...

to the moderator, kindly remove or at least edit observer's post. LOSE lang hindi pa alam ang spelling. Kaya tayo associated as inferior school eh. spelling lang, mali pa. thanks. dont worry guys, warm up lang to. pagdating ng uaap, makikita nyo ang tunay na dlsu team! animo!

The boys will be ready come UAAP season... ITs just a pre-season tournament... Its better to loose now than loose in the actual tournament proper...

I would like to see Gee Abanilla and Juno Sauler as coaches for the Archers.

guys...This is just the preseason...The real battle has yet to come...The preseason tournament is the time where coaches make their experiments with their team rotation, team building, chemistry enhancement and basis of who will make the final cut...Most of the DLSU teams were never good in the presason tournaments but they always make the transformation once the UAAP starts. I would rather have them lose the preseason games than the actual tournament like the UAAP...Besides, we need to save our "alas" for the real battle ahead so there would be so called "element of surprise"...For now, they need to gauge other team, who retooled their roster, like ADMU, NU, FEU and Adamson...Have faith in the team...ANIMO!!! :)

Oo nga naman, the UAAP season is a full two months away. We should take our sweet time and figure things out. We will be a completely different team by the UAAP season diba??? Right.

You know Ipisman, every ballgame is the real battle, you know why? because they are carrying my school, De La Salle University. Losing a game should never be an option. We must not care if this is a pre-season game, an elimination game or exhibition game, we must fight to win. About our "alas", they're known and guess what, our "alas" are not improving, example, Webb, Atkins special mention MAUI VILLANUEVA. They should develop a thing or two, but they're still one dimensional player. Without a good teacher or coach to mold their skills, I don't think we can get pass Final Four (but i am hoping). I love DLSU but we should accept that DINDO PUMAREN and TONICHI YTURRI are not good enough for us. I think we should say thank you to them already and start anew. Dindo can be a great asst. coach but i dont think he will lead us to victory because he will choke the way he did in his UE days. Plus, in the recruitment process, if you're a blue-chip player, why would you go to DLSU where the coach is DINDO when in fact, a lot of schools have a blue-chip coaches, like BLACK, ALTAMIRANO and even LEO AUSTRIA.

Basketball is winning the game in all if not most of facets i.e., offense, defense, rebounds, assists and naturally in the paint!

We have so much talent in this team, but no clear direction, even our free throws suck... so frustrating.

I hate to agree with 'bringthegreen' but you know what? the guy has a perfect point, yes, it is hard to admit but we need a new set of coaches if we want to win again, it's as simple as that. This game was winnable from the start, as well as the UST game but utter lack of a decnt system killed our chances. I bleed every time the Archers lose, trust me.

Again. The incompetent DINDO Pumaren is the culprit. Let us all admit that Dindo "Incompetent" Pumaren does not know how to coach. First, he will start a weak five. Second, he will shuffle players like they already have 4 fouls and third, just listen to him when he coach, he does not know what to say. Please, please. We can still hire a better coach than Dindo and his boys. A coach who's passion is to win, not to gain experience. I want the DLSU swagger to be back, how can we do it? by having a coach who is passionate, a coach who will lead us to victories and a coach who know how to COACH!! A "bullet" is useless without a gun. Dindo is only a bullet. We need a GUN and bullets. A gun will be the competent coach and bullets will be the DLSU Green Archers! REMOVAL OF DINDO AND TONICHI is the only way!

sana coach Dindo would play Oda and Luigi together on the court at the same time for longer periods, and specially pag crunch time na. They've proven that they are big time and reliable scorers. Preferred Starting and Finishing 5: Simon, Oda, Luigi, Papot, Andrada. Top reserves, first/s off the bench: Villanueva, Marata, Mendoza, Vosotros, Revilla.

IMHO your starting line up is too small, placing Luigi at the 3? Preferred Starting and finishing five: Simon, Luigi, Marata, Torres and Van Opstal. Top Reserves: Oda, Webb, Mendoza, Revilla, Mendoza.

I don't think Simon should be in the point. Kailangan magaling mag set ng play. I think Dan Sara's your man. I think Simon should be the SG. Lalo na kay Keifer, si Simon lang marunong dumepensa. Torres can't be a starter. He can't guard the low post. AVO isn't a starter as well. Si Webb, malakas lang pag Ateneo-La salle games or games wherin malakas magcheer ang crowd. Dapat sikat siya. I guess that's because of his ADHD. haha Pero since he's a better start than Marata, I'd chose webb on the 3 position. Marata lacks defense ALOT and his field goals isn't that consistent. Preferred Starting and finishing five: Sara, Simon, Webb,Jovet,Papot Top Reserves: Oda, Revilla, Marata, Luigi, Andrada

Uy, ok tong discussion of the potentail lineups...here's my take: Starting 5: Revilla, Luigi, Marata, Jovet, Papot Top reserves: Oda, Almond/Dan, Andrada, Maui, Torres, AVO, Simon Third string: Ponso G.!!! May future tong batang to! Opinion lang mga papi! :D

sa tingin ko wala sa coach ang problema.aminin na natin na mahina talaga ang mga players natin.

sayang next time ulit ... Animo !
