La Salle’s endgame comeback fell a tad short

From GMANews.Tv

Gutsy playmaker Garvo Lanete saved San Beda from an epic collapse, draining the game-winning three-pointer to lift the Red Lions to a 70-68 triumph over La Salle in the FilOil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan City.

The NCAA champion Red Lions squandered an 11-point fourth quarter lead as the Green Archers came roaring back to even take a 68-67 lead with under a minute left.

But Lanete came to San Beda’s rescue as he buried the game-winning three-pointer from the right corner against the outstretch hands of LA Revilla with 3.3 seconds remaining to the delight of the San Beda gallery.

La Salle had a chance to send the game into overtime but Revilla lost the ball as he was driving to the hoop.

“Big shot by Garvo. That shows that the he has guts,” said Red Lions coach Frankie Lim.

San Beda improved to a 3-2 record for solo third place in Group A.

It was the Mendiola-based squad’s second game since arriving from a three-week training camp in the United States. The core team, representing Maynilad, lost to Freego Jeans, 88-81, in the first round of the PBA D-League Foundation Cup playoffs.

Lanete finished with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals although he shot 3-of-10 from beyond the arc. Jake Pascual came off the bench to finish with 10 points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes.

“They had a bad game in the D-League, maybe because of jetlag but the team played much better this time,” said Lim.

A three-pointer by rookie guard Baser Amer, who played despite throwing up days before this match, gave the Lions a 62-51 lead with 5:41 left in the fourth.

But La Salle quickly answered with a 14-4 run in a four-minute stretch before Almond Vosotros hit three free throws, off a Paolo Pontejos foul with exactly a minute left, to give the Archers a 68-66 lead.

San Beda’s Jake Pascual split his charities to cut the deficit to one and La Salle’s Maui Villanueva was fouled with 17.8 ticks left. However, the lefty forward missed both free throws to set up Lanete’s end-game heroics.

ARCHERS 101! Its not exciting anymore!

FT shooting is what has made us lose many close games...please take it seriously DLSU team! Animo!

I do not understand why the team goes to Chicago every year yet they can't make their free throws! In the case of Maui Villanueva his form is wrong. How come this was never corrected even after three years? Can it be a policy that any player who can't make 80% or more in free throw does not get into the team? Further, now that the team is much taller, could we also get a big man coach to make this players as effective as Limpot or Allado and not just recipients of passes from the guards?

dpt tanggalin na maui villanueva sa roster. maui villanueva only got some experience, thats all. hes just a smaller version of ferdinand. lasalle would be better if they good care young players like louie vigil and pate! but they are both gone.

i think the real problem is that our veterans DONT IMPROVE. If we keep taking them out - ferdinand, maui and in the 09 era, barua, malabes et al - we will get stuck in this 'we are a young team' trap.

Let's just focus on one thing .... our FREE THROW shooting!!! This is what's killing us.....duuuuhhh!!

Ateneo's recruitment player recruitment program has seemed to me like the best, netting phenoms like Slaughter and Ravena. This is because of the personal intervention of MVP notwithstanding his passion for the game. We direly need the help of a Danding again! Our rich and powerful alumni can definitely help. Where are you guys?

Yes Archer. 52% at 15 of 29. Like I said in previous posts, if we do not improve on this, there goes the season. Two points was all we needed to go on OT and 3 to win. San Beda did not do well also shooting 17 of 26 for 65%. But wait. What is 17 made free throws minus 15 made free throws? Answer: Two points. We lost by 2. Don't over analyze our game Archers. This is our MAIN problem, nothing else.

I think free throw shooting is one of the problems, NOT the only one. Saw the game live and in my mind, we had no business losing to a team without Sudan and Ola (the two Beda imports). The Beda bigs repeatedly scored off second chance points after Torres and Van Opstal failed to box out. Our press became the primary offensive option for SBC where they kept turning it into secondary breaks. Yutien DOES NOT work as an SF option where Dindo puts him outside the three point area. San Beda did a 3-2 zone on us (three on the perimeter) and we failed to dominate inside and dominate the boards. That has to count for something right? We were down by 11 with 4 minutes to go. Granted, we had a heck of a run. But it wasnt free throw shooting that put us under that much. It was what did us in.

Poor free throws did it again! Tsk tsk tsk.....
