Archers Upend Ateneo, Make the Playoffs

Facing elimination from the Filoil tournament, the Green Archers played their best game yet this pre-season to outsteady Ateneo, 66-61 at the Arena today. The Archers led most of the way in fashioning a feel good win over their greatest rivals in a game they needed to win or be ousted.

The victory allowed La Salle to qualify for the knockout quarterfinals after UST lost to San Beda in an earlier game. However, the win could prove to be costly, as prized rookie forward Norbert Torres injured his elbow after he tangled with Ateneo center Golla. Torres lay grimacing on the court for a few minutes before he could be helped up, raising fears of a serious injury that could affect his participation in the UAAP. Unconfirmed reports we received after the game cited a dislocated elbow, an injury which could sideline him for a couple of weeks but which is not considered serious enough to keep him from playing in the UAAP.

LA Revilla used this game to signal his return after a 2-year break, as he ably quarterbacked the Archer offense and shackled his counterpart Monfort on the other end. His timely hits in the endgame kept the Archers in front after repeated Ateneo rallies kept the game close. Two Revilla triples restored the Archer lead, 55-50, after Ateneo momentarily grabbed it at 49-50, and it was his consecutive layups that broke a 61-all deadlock and gave us the lead for good. His great all-around game led to his being named as Player of the Game, and his final stats – 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists did not reflect his impact on the game. In fact, the diminutive LA even hauled down more rebounds (6) than the Ateneo 7-foot center Greg Slaughter, who only manged 5 boards.

La Salle’s active defense neutralized Ateneo’s celebrated rookies Slaughter and Ravena, holding them down to a total of 12 points. Slaughter, was expected to dominate the smaller Archer bigs, but his defenders played physical by bodying up on him whenever he attempted to back into the paint. Arnold Van Opstal, Norbert Torres, and Papot Paredes took turns guarding Slaughter, and the tag-team harassment limited his effectiveness and playing time to just 12 minutes. Slaughter’s presence on the court slowed down the Ateneo offense as they repeatedly tried to dump the ball into the post, with little effect. Ravena was closely guarded by Simon and Luigi, and never got untracked enough to make a difference, his 10 points coming mainly from the open court while being limited to only 6 attempts.

The pressure defense, which has been termed as obsolete by some, was never fully solved by the Ateneo pressbreak, and it caused Ateneo to resort to long crosscourt passes which occasionally went awry, contributing to Ateneo’s 19 turnovers. Our players parlayed these miscues into 14 points while taking care of the ball and limiting our own turnovers to just 10. While our internal defense logged only 3 blocks , our frontliners led by Norbert and Papot altered several shots of Blue Eagles who managed to penetrate the perimeter defense. The active Archer defense forced the usually reliable Ateneo shooters into a 21/56  (38%)  clip from the field.

We outrebounded Ateneo, 45-39, giving us a 14-3 edge in 2nd chance points. Norbert did a yeoman’s job on the boards, pulling down 10, backed by Arnold Van Opstal and LA who had 6 each. The better rebounding performance gave the Archers more possessions and allowed us more attempts from the field, 72, of which we made 26 for 36%. Coach Dindo field in 14 players, and only Oda Tampus failed to score.

After taking the lead, 5-4, at the 4:53 mark of the first quarter, the Archers grabbed the initiative and even led by 12, 32-20 and 34-22 before settling into a 36-31 halftime advantage. Ateneo fought back in the 3rd quarter to close to within 1 after 3 quarters at 49-48 on an improbable Austria trey at the buzzer.

Ateneo briefly retook the lead at the start of the 4th quarter on 2 Chua free throws, 49-50, and it was while jockeying for the possible rebound on his second foul shot that Golla hooked the elbow of Torres, causing Torres to fall to the floor writhing in pain. Torres made his way to the locker room on his own, and when the game resumed, LA Revilla personally took charge, hitting consecutive triples that restored the lead, 55-50. LA then orchestrated another pick-and-roll with Yutien which Yutien converted, 57-50. Ateneo threatened at 58-57 as Ravena scored 4 points, but an Atkins catch-and-shoot trey gave us some breathing room, 61-57. Salva hit 2 jumpters to tie it at 61-all before LA shook his defender Monfort, cut into the lane and Jovet found him for a wide open layup, 63-61 with 1:09 left. A Ravena miss was followed by a Sam Marata miss. On the rebound, Yutien tipped the ball to LA with 35 seconds left. LA loitered in the perimeter, closely watched by Monfort, before driving to his left to leave Monfort behind, and he threw up a left-handed layup to clinch it, 65-61 with 16 seconds left.

Timeout Ateneo. The ball went to Long, who drove but found 2 Archer defenders in front of him forcing Long to kick the ball out a teammate on the perimeter. However, the Archers had anticipated the play, and the pass was intercepted by Simon, who was fouled and sank 1/2 free throws for the final score.

The Blue Eagles badly missed last year’s key players Salamat, Buenafe, and dela Cruz, and it showed in their shaky play in the endgame. The Eagles went to Salva on the outside, and he hit several long shots to prevent the Archers from pulling away. The Ateneo guards failed to make a major impact with Long, Monfort, and Austria limited to 20 points.

Free throw woes continued to plague the Archers, with the team accuracy regressing after our players got to the foul line 22 times but missed 12 for only 45%. If the Archers had made even half of their misses, the game would not have been as close. The ft malaise is getting to be a serious problem which must be solved in time for the UAAP, otherwise the Archers cannot expect to go deep into the playoffs.

The win gives our team an improbable 2 consecutive wins over Ateneo, counting their exhibition game in the Middle East during the summer. The Archers play FEU on Monday, June 7 at 4pm, as the Filoil tournament enters the knockout phase.

LA Revilla will lead La Salle to glory! Animo!

GO ANIMO! DLSU BASKETBALL! It's been a long time since the blue shirts been kicking our ass.. I hope the confidence of Archers boost up again... It's really been a long time for us. Pls. Bring Back the Glory to TAFT! ANIMO DLSU!

whats with the people bashing on webb?! sure he didnt give much offensively, but the way he shut down Ravena in the game was key. He's our defensive stopper.

I just want to show my admiration for LA Revilla, imagine, he stuck with La Salle even after his 2-year hiatus; recovering from his illness. He came roaring back with a vengeance!! He showed great court leadership, impressive shooting & good defense. HATS OFF TO LA!!! ANIMO!!!!

good job limiting Maui Villanueva's minutes!! Mendoza and Andrada deserves more minutes at the 4 spot! while AVO, Paredes, Torres takes the 5 spot! wla naman kayang gawin c Maui ehh! tapos laging babad. Well, ok stats nya sa rebounds pro wla naman xiang post-up moves, he's not a shot blocker, ndi rin xia perimeter shooter!! BAKIT KASI LAGI XIA babad???????????

The team's free-throw misses almost cost us the game! The Archer's lead towards the end of the game became very, very thin (Ateneo even led by one!) because of free-throw misses. I hope the boys can get it together before UAAP starts otherwise it will be yet another disappointing final-four exit. But nevertheless, good job Archers! I hope you guys can keep it up! Bring back the green pride! >:)

where's buenafe? is he out for good o sa filoil lang??

I just want to point out that both Ravena and Salva were at one point La Sallians (lsgh) and if not for both of them yesterday, Ateneo would've been down by 20. I find it really pathetic that Ateneo has to buy players in order to contend for the championship.

Good luck to our boys! Hopefully, we can win more against AdMU this UAAP season :-) Shameless plug: to Green Archer fans especially to those who witnessed our 4-peat reign, we made a scrap blog of old articles, photos and stuff: oldgreenglory.tumblr.com Please share it to diehard fans and the young batch. Animo La Salle!

What happened to Pate, Organ, Elorde, Banal, etc?

hi, just like to ask: what is this i hear from another forum that UST is "dreaming" of getting Ponso Gotladera after welcoming Louie Vigil in their fold? Please tell assure us that Ponso is a lock for this year's line-up! I got disappointed when Vigil, Pate, Gallaraza and Organ, not to mention Nico Elorde, left the fold. I hope that Ponso thing is just sokme fool's dream by those Tigers who are clearly left too long in the heat and got crazy!

If I'm not mistaken, Ponso played yesterday for the Green Archers and scored in the paint. As they say, wala namang masama kung managinip ang UST.

The dislocated elbow of Torres sounds not too serious then. Traction will restore the elbow in place and Torres will be on duty after 3 weeks. He just needs to join the conditioning exercises to stay in shape and game ready. Our foul shooting percentage has still not improved. We nearly lost the game when it became tight. Thanks to LA for stepping in when it was needed. Forty six percent FT shooting is not good enough even for the women's league!

I hope Norbert Torres would be able to play in the upcoming UAAP games. Nagpalit ba tayo ng official outfitter from Adidas to Nike?

something indeed to celebrate as we reach 100: beating our favorite rivals. It'll be harder for the blues to achieve their 4-peat imo in the absence of certain key players that made their 3 consecutive victories in the uaap possible. They're easy enough to beat once you neutralize kiefer + slaughter-- two marked men their rivals will target in the upcoming uaap season.

'first off, congratulations for a tremdous display of DLSU team basketball. Practically everyone stepped up to play their respective roles delivered from the defenders to the playmakers andv all the way to the shooters. Whatever game plan coach Dindo drew they executed it to perfection as we never relinquished our lead. I love the way we have played with a lot of pride and passion and hung on even during the crunch period and guess what the defending champs got rattled and pressured by a team whose composed of seasoned veterans, sophomores and rookies who show no fear. The fearless 3 delivered by Atkins to restore the lead back during the last two minutes was pure clutch. And Mr. Cool - LA during the stretch was magnificent the give and go with Jovet, the pick and roll with Yutien and the twin 3-pt. shots whatta great performance. I know we needed this game more than they do but who cares. It;s about pride and the guys shown that they do not play with fear at all, even the rookie Van Optsal stood his ground against a PBA-tested sham rookie who has actually playe collegiate basktball elsewhere and he was clearly outhustled. All he cold do was to fish foul like what he dd against San Beda and it's great that the refs had the good sense to rightfully not blow the whistle on these pretend flailing whenever he posts up. Atkins was brilliant in coveing their overly hyped rookie and was the first back down in defense whenever Ateneo goes for a fastbreak. We clean up well on defense especially Luigi and Atkins were great in setting up traps so to those who said our nightmare press is'nt working anymore I hope your humble enough to commend the players for a job well done. On the downside, we still need to work on our Free throws. Whenever Ateneo makes theirs two for two while ours only one for two it's like playing against a team with a plus on the box score only it's not their fault but it's ours. What's worse, while some players make only half of their free throws Luigi was 0 for two which is unbelievable because he's had 0 for two's during the game against San Beda and NU and it's getting to be constitently bad. Our lead should have been bigger going down the stretch but because of the way we;ve been splitting our charities while Ateneo makes both free throws on most occasions have kept the game close. I know this is mental because hes got a nice touch from the outside. I hope he can fix this before the UAAP starts. Moving forward we just need to address the pick amd roll / two-man game of Ravena and Salva. Based on my observation, whenever Ravena goes around Salva, Salva'a man would end up double teaming Ravena leaving Nico open for a shot which to his credit he was able to knock down a lot of them. To me, that was a good call. Of course it would have been perfect if we can still cover both but I agree to make Salva those long jumpers and live with the results than let Ravena explode. They no longer have a lot of weapons like they used to with the absence of Buenafe and the graduation of Salamat. Slaughter does not havethe medium range outside shot of Al Husseini and all he can do is post up to bait for a foul. Long lives off the outside only when he's open and he;s not the focal point of the defense. Ravena if we can solve him would not be able to carry the team at this point of his early college stint. All in all kudos for a jobe well done but our work is only beginning.

When is Coach Dindo Pumaren gonna get rid of Joshua Webb??? We have better players. Let's not waste a slot on a player who has shown no improvement at all. TAKE HIM OUT. I remember saying this on the old site 2 years ago.

Webb is over rated.I thought last year will be his breakout year but i was dead wrong.though i hate Buenafe but i guess mas nag improve sya kesa ke spider, kahit me angas eh kaya naman dalhin...still believe na time na ng mga archers ngayon.

Congratulations guys!! GREAT GAME.. but a costly win for us as Norbert got injured... I wish he gets well soon, he's a big factor under the boards for us. To the rest of the team, let's keep practicing our free throws. We will be a formidable team if we make just 60% - 65% of our free throws.

GO DLSU! Consistency please...

this result is great since it will be only 11 days before June 16... the day of our Centennial Celebration... ANIMO!!!
