Pouncing on its solid showing in many fronts, University of Santo Tomas bagged the general championship of the 71st University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season for its 36th overall crown.
The overall champions for the 11th straight now, the Tigers finished with a winning aggregate of 333 points built on nine titles. They won men’s fencing, women’s football, men’s swimming, men’s table tennis, men’s and women’s taekwondo, women’s tennis, men’s volleyball and men’s beach volleyball.
UST also posted eight second-place finishes (men’s badminton, men’s chess, women’s judo, softball, women’s table tennis, men’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field) and grabbed eight third-place trophies (women’s badminton, women’s basketball, women’s chess, women’s fencing, men’s judo, women’s swimming, women’s volleyball and women’s beach volleyball) to cement its position as the league’s top school.
The UAAP awards 15 points to a champion team in an event, 12 points for second and 10 points for third. The fourth placer is given eight points, the fifth placer is awarded six points, the sixth placer is given four points, the seventh placer is awarded two points and the eighth placer is given one point.
La Salle checked in at a distant second place with 241 after taking home three titles in women’s chess, men’s tennis and women’s volleyball.
The Green Archers took runner up honors in women’s badminton, men’s basketball, women’s football, men’s judo, men’s swimming and women’s tennis; and third place in men’s badminton, men’s football, women’s judo and men’s volleyball.
University of the Philippines, the host school for this season, finished in third place with 235 even as the Fighting Maroons captured one title all season in men’s football.
The Fighting Maroons also had second-place finishes in baseball, women’s basketball, women’s fencing, women’s swimming and men’s volleyball, and finished third in men’s fencing, men’s swimming, men’s and women’s table tennis, women’s taekwondo and men’s tennis.
Far Eastern University collected seven titles but settled for fourth place with 233 after winning women’s badminton, women’s basketball, men’s chess, women’s table tennis, men’s and women’s track and field and women’s beach volleyball crowns.
Ateneo finished fifth with 199 after winning the men’s basketball, men’s judo and women’s swimming crowns.
University of the East placed sixth with 170 as the Red Warriors took the men’s badminton and women’s fencing titles.
Adamson finished seventh with 99 on the strength of crowns from baseball and softball.
National University took the eighth spot with 35 points. –GMANews.TV
