De La Salle retires Manilla Santos’ Jersey #14

manilla_retirement_032109Post from Bro Ceci in his multiply

DLSU varsity players gathered together for one last time to celebrate their 2nd place overall achievement in Season ’71 of the UAAP.

And what a fitting climax it was when the University in 98 years of its existence finally retired the number of a female athlete in honor of her achievement for God and the school community.

Ms Illa Santos, team captain of the champion wvb team, was publicly recognized by the University when she was awarded by Br Bernie Oca the privilege and honor of having her #14 formally retired from active use from this day on.

This is the first time in the history of the university to have an athlete, a female at that, of a team other than the men’s basketball being honored for her exemplary role as the most outstanding DLSU Lady Spiker of all time.

Before Illa was given this distinct recognition, only three (all from the Men’s Basktball Team) so far have been enlisted among the SPORTS LEGENDS of DLSU since 1911. Only four names hang on the rafters of the 9th floor of the DLSU SPORTS CENTER.

Wow. For her number to join the likes of Kurt Bachmann, Lim Eng Beng and Ren Ren Ritualo up in the rafter, this is indeed a milestone.

    Congrats Illa!

  • growling archer

wow!!! but do they also have plans to retire jv casio’s jersey number??!!

  • McReyECONOMETRICS

Congratulations Illa. Thank you for making us proud. You really deserve such merit and hopefully, may your legacy inspire more Lasallian athletes to become achievers even in their own right,

    ANIMO ILLA!

I am so proud of you.

  • Dustin

uhm… not to be a party-pooper or something, but could anyone enumerate the achievements of illa? and how they would compare to maureen penetrante and chie saet? thanks.

  • veronica annette

congrats, illa…surely you will be missed…God bless you.

weh? just like Dustin’s comment. Can you please enumerate the achievements of Santos? Just because she won the MVP award in this season’s UAAP Volleyball, she already has it to be lined up with the sought-after athletes of La Salle? Think about it. Of course, she, as the team captain, would probably bag the MVP award since her team bagged the title. She should have thanked Alarca or Mercado because they were the main reasons more than she why the team was forced into finals, right? But lucky for her, she was the team captain of the squad and UAAP always gives the MVP award to the team captains of the winning team.

i think they should also retire the # of michelle pauline datuin, jospeh yeo, mike cortez, ty tang and jv casio…. they did a great job during their uaap days,,, don’t forget macmac cardona….

  • TJ

    Mike,

We cant just retire every player just because they did well during their time with La Salle. From what I understand, players cannot choose numbers above 24. We will lack available jersey numbers in the process.

It’s a matter of choosing the best among the best. Admittedly though, there are certain past players that I feel deserve to have their numbers retired but were not considered.

You deserve your award for all your hard work. Top of it all, you are blessed to be the end receiver of grace from above. Over all, this is God’s lot for you. Embrace it with pride of God’s enabling in accomplishing well. You finished well and its all that matters and we are proud to share the joy of your blessed life in sports.

You are an inspiration! May you continue to inspire people in and out of court – for the Lord!

    Your BIG FANS from CANADA!!!

i do believe Daquis deserves the title more than Santos.

im sorry but this is just an opinion.

  • Nel

That’s a natural reaction if you’re only looking at the numbers or scores that each player put up. Illa would never have made the numbers that Daquis had, simply because the La Salle team had so many players who could and did contribute to the scoring load – this is the reason why no La Salle player was in the list of top scorers. So if your criteria is just points, Daquis would have more, as would a lot of other players from the other teams.

But if you consider overall value (that’s why it’s called the Most Valuable Player award), then Illa’s leadership, conduct throughout the tournament, her ability to keep the team focused, her willingness to be responsible and accountable for the team’s performance as team captain, all these added up to her value. And that’s what counted in the estimation of the panel who chose her as the MVP. Unfortunately for Daquis, there was no “high scorer” award.

  • edgieboy

i agree with NEL. the MVP award is not given to the captain of the team most of the time but to the player who performed consistently. despite the fact that she stands only 5’4″ tall, she performed above her height.

  • Eixa

kung points lang din ang pag-uusapan para maging mvp, better give it to jacq alarca di ba? kung gusto talaga ninyo na ibigay sa taga feu, kay shaira na lang. but illa is illa, she did everything else that statistics can not show. yan ang tinatawag na “DATING”. ngingiti lang yata si illa, mamomotivate nang maglaro ng mabuti ang lady spikers. congratulations!!!!

*REMINDER: SMS LINGO NOT ALLOWED HERE*
magaling naman talaga c illa eh… in serving, sure ball ata ung serve niya, ndi naman mahalaga na may service ace ka eh… sa attack,i think above 50% ung attack niya… tama ka nel, marami ang nagcocontribute sa la salle, dapat kc sa volleyball is teamwork… ano naman kung magaling ang spiker tapos ung receive and set is not good??? ndi makakaspike ng tama ang spiker… and also, ang height ni illa is 5’4′ pero nablock niya ung mas matangkad sa kanya,so all-around player ata to si illa…

ikaw ung inspiration ko, illa… you pushed me in the game VOLLEYBALL… hindi kita kakalimutan… promise ko yan… i also include you in my prayers… malapit na ako maging volleyball player, i dont know how to thank you… marami kc ung tinuro mo sa akin,,, basta GOD IS THEIR TO GUIDE YOU! GOD BLESS YOU!

  • nicco

illa surely deserves this honor, she may not have shown superior skills but she has been the heart of the lady spikers, her passion for the game gave power to the team.

to those who question or compares her legacy to other athletes, must i remind you that she played a role in four championships for DLSU. it’s not about looking good with all sorts of fancy moves, it’s what you can do to win.
    and that’s what matters..

anyways illa is way more hot than rachel daquis!

  • barry louie
