Green Archers crush UE for third straight win

The Green Archers notched their 3rd straight victory after a 0-2 season start as they thrashed the UE Red Warriors 87-63 today.

How it happened

The Archers were not only expected to win this match, they were expected to win big. They however got off to a slow start trailing 3-9 in the early goings of the game. Both teams were tied at 13 after the opening period.

With its offense and defense now in high gear, La Salle finally took control of the game come the second period. The Archers built their lead off their swarming defense which led to several fast break points and easy inside baskets. The team erected a 19-point lead at the half.

Unlike their last two games, La Salle kept the intensity going in the second half and never gave UE the slightest opportunity to threaten their huge lead.

Oda Tampus led the team with 15 points followed by Simon Atkins and LA Revilla with 12 and 10 points respectively. All 16 Archers played today including sophomore Martin Reyes who was able to chip in 4 points in the closing seconds. Adrian Santos top scored for the Red Warriors with 14 points.

Stat of the Game

The Archers swatted 6 shots.

I am posting two links to websites wherein explanations are offered as to why big players choke during big games. The failures of Lebron James during the NBA finals, Andy Murray during the Australian Open final, the US Women's Football team during the World Championships, Greg Norman's during the 1996 Masters and Bill Buckner's during the 1986 World Series were mentioned as potentially due to "choking." Hereunder is the link to a psychological view of choking (please click on link or copy paste it to your browser): http://www.podiumsportsjournal.com/2011/07/23/choking-what-is-it-and-how-to-avoid-it/ and here is the medical assessment on "choking" from sports pundit: http://www.123helpme.com/view.asp?id=96613 I have been following Andy Murray's career. He is always brilliant in major slams until the final. Thus far he hasn't won a major! Why is that?

I don't mean to throw water on our win against UE but I wouldn't keep patting ourselves on the back here... you see, UE (no disrespect) is a rookie laden team with a new coach which hadn't adjusted to our press yet. Trust me, the Falcons will tear our press to bits and score with ease with their slashers if we don't make adjustments to it. I'm telling you, other teams have our press figured out like it was last year's secret!! And one more thing, our free throws need more practice...AGAIN!!

I agree with what you said. With all due to respect to UE, this year's batch of Red Warriors is, obviously, in rebuilding mode, which is why a lot of teams, including ours, find it easy to go up against them. Like what I said in a previous post, UE is a team that has nothing to lose and everything to gain, thus the need for all teams to crush them for a convincing victory instead of giving the Red Warriors the inspiration to nail their first win of the season. Adamson, on the other hand, is a very veteran team, with players who have high basketball IQ and good work ethics. Aside from Norman Black, Leo Austria is one coach that knows DLSU's weakness, the press break, very well, although they employ the press break usually on full court press, which DLSU usually uses, and not much during half court press. Alvarez and Canada, their point guards, have already earned the reputation for being an "Archer Killer" because they kept on outsmarting our point guards. The physicality of their tall and athletic guards, Nuyles and Lozada, is something that should be expected. Cabrera, their trigger-happy tall guy, has the ability to use his size advantage over his defenders. Adamson also banks on the production of its forwards Camson and Colina, and its imported center Manyara. Expect Leo Austria to also use an "anonymous player", one whom we failed to scout, against DLSU, similar to what he did last year when he used the likes of Etrone and Brondial, which caught us by surprise (potential "anonymous players" for Adamson include Etrone, Brondial, Petillos, Rios, Monteclaro and even Manyara, na itinago ni Leo Austria from us last Sunday); and decoys in order to attract DLSU's defense and open some of the Falcons for much needed offense. Kina Alvarez, Canada at Nuyles madalas umikot ang bola ng Adamson. Aside from using press breaks, Adamson can employ zone defense against us because the Falcons know that we rely so much on isolation plays. Unfortunately for us, we do not have good offensive execution. Our shooters are inconsistent and we still have this persistent free throw shooting problem that we could not even solve. I believe that we should do these to beat Adamson: 1. Play 40 straight minutes of hellish defense, but have the ability to adjust when necessary, especially when Austria uses press breaks whenever we employ the full court press. 2. Anticipate the possibility of Adamson using decoys and an "anonymous player" to completely disrupt our offense and defense. 3. Instead of relying too much on full court press, which Austria can read easily, use the half court press to delay Adamson's possession supposing they have a play to execute. 4. Use multiple zone defense but with a twist: HAVE RELIABLE BIG MEN similar to what NU did when they had Mbe mixed with their version of the zone (again, expect that Adamson will adjust to this type of defense when they meet us on Saturday).

Practice free throws!!!! Dela Paz's two misses are not acceptable.

This win has totally impressed me. We've just seen how threatening the archers are with everyone contributing. The huge lead was cut to a manageable one with the bench playing almost the entire 4th quarter, but still managed to regain that huge lead at the last minute of the ball game. Hoping for them to keep this up. Everybody played excellent defense. I don't think there's something to be done on the press. A press can either force some turnovers or can be a time sucker. Unless they get to break it quickly like in 4 secs time or less, there's nothing to worry about. Good job Archers. Animo!

astig!

i wish to see more crisp passing and adjust the press kasi minsan nabababasa na. I prefer man to man than zone D because our lineup certainly is a matchup nightmare for offense especially AVO, Tampus, Atkins & Revilla. practice free throws again please?

Great game for the Archers. The only things that were not good: 1. FT Shooting - too many misses from the line. We can't afford this especially during close games. 2. Joshua Webb - 4points, 4 turnovers, 4 fouls in 9 minutes. I still can't understand why they still let him play.

i agree why do they have webb in the line up anyway?

What I do not understand also is that Webb is a basketball prodigy... he is supposed to be refined by now. He seems to have talent driving into the basket. I think he would be effective if he make baskets by slashing. Hold the ball quick, go slash and pull every opponent with him, make baskets and draw fouls from them. As I said before, this kid has tons of energy that needs to be directed in the right direction. He is prone to fouls... he should turn it around and cause fouls to opponents instead of attracting it.

sa aking pamantayan i would give them a score of 5. malayo pa from the previous la salle teams. i still would say tsamba. abangan ang susunod na kabanata.

haha you're worse than I am in criticizing the team! Or do you actually know how to play the game? they played way better than the previous games (this season that is). The teams of the PAST are in the PAST. so live with it!

Hail! Hail! ODA TAMPUS! HAIL TO DE LA SALLE AND THE GREENARCHERS!

That Santos fella from UE really looks like Jason Webb, does he not? Nice to see everybody played in this game :) Gujab Green Archers! Next games' gonna get tougher!
