UAAP Season 71: Green Archers bow to Red Warriors.

img-20321With key players figuring in injuries, the Green Archers got a beating from the University of the East Red Warriors, 68-62, in the UAAP Men’s Basketball at the Araneta Coliseum last Saturday.

Just minutes after the opening tip-off, sophomore playmaker Simon David Atkins, suffered a head injury while trying to get a charging foul from UE’s Rudy Lingganay. Although Atkins did get the offensive foul, he hit his head hard on the floor, as the Green and White gallery watched in horror.  Atkins was brought out of the playing court with a stretcher on the way to the hospital. Atkins remained conscious after the fall, but complained of blurry vision. As of press time, there were still no updates on the condition of the former Baby Archer.

Later in the first quarter, center Marko Batricevic was also taken out of the playing court and never came back after hitting a rare three-pointer. He landed hard on a rehabilitated knee. It was reported that Batricevic would be out for the season due to an ACL injury. Forward James Mangahas suffered cramps twice in the ballgame even as main gun Rico Maierhofer also got taken out of the game after he was down on the floor in the 3rd quarter.

“Today, the real UE Warriors played,” remarked UE Coach Dindo Pumaren.

It was a see-saw affair in the early part of the first quarter, with the teams even at 9-9, 2:47 in the first. Green Archer rookie LA Revilla sank a three point shot and gave De La Salle its highest lead of the ballgame at 3 points, 12-9. This lead however, would turn out to be the Green Archer’s last, as the Warriors responded with a 10-3 run anchored on back-to-back baskets from Paul Lee and back-to-back triple from James Martinez. This pushed the Warriors to a 4 point lead, 19-15 at the end of the first.

And the Warriors never looked back.

img-195011In the second quarter, the Green Archers struggled with their offense as the Season 71 runner up’s double teaming efforts was successful in denying the defending champion’s shooters of a clear look of the basket. On the other hand, the Red Warriors, reminiscent of their deadly form last season that gave them a rare 14 game sweep, pounded on the Green Archers with 4 three point conversions in the second quarter alone. As the Green Archers’ main guns got muzzled by the pesky defense of the Red Warriors, De La Salle’s rookies took up the scoring chores. Neophytes Revilla, Maui Villanueva and Hyram Bagatsing scored to keep the Warriors within striking distance at halftime, 39-31.

Casio tried to breathe life to the Green Archers’ game with a three pointer to open up the third canto. But the Recto-based squad was fully loaded after the 1st half as they mounted a 10-0 run after the Casio triple, and threatened to pull away from the Archers, 49-34, 4:23 left in the 3rd. Unfazed by the Warriors onslaught, James Mangahas led the Archers’ cause scoring 6 points towards the end of the 3rd. However, his efforts were not enough as the Warriors continued to hit the baskets. The quarter ended with the Red Warriors enjoying their highest lead of the ballgame at 16, 62-46.

Mangahas and Revilla led the defending champions in mounting their own 10-2 rally at the opening of the last quarter to move closer to the Red Warriors, 56-64 with 6:05 left in the ballgame. The Green Archers defense got to work as they limited the Warriors to only 6 points in the final quarter, but their offense was not enough as the Archers continued to struggle in scoring the much-needed points. The Archers moved to within 6 points, 62-68, courtesy of split free throws from rookies David Webb and Revilla and a lay-up from Barua 2:10 left in the ballgame. But both teams failed to score a single basket in the final two minutes, en route to the Red Warrior’s victory.

“They played good, we played bad. But we played a good game,” remarked Coach Franz Pumaren.

With the loss, the Green Archers ended their first round campaign at 5-2 win loss card, good for solo second, behind current league leaders Ateneo Blue Eagles and FEU Tamaraws. The Red Warriors, on the other hand, improved to four wins and three losses to secure solo third place, a full game behind the Green Archers.

i think our defense sucked yesterday. we allowed them to take a lot of open 3′s. everytime martinez took a 3, i was like – putangina libre nanaman!!! and this guy is know to be a good shooter. our guys need to play better defense!!! watch games from 98 to 01 and see how la salle played defense then. we don;t play half as good today. i wanna see that nightmare full court press again. i wanna see other teams have a hard time crossing half court again. i wanna see other teams panic. i know our guys are capable of playing real la salle defense.

Yes our defense was bad but you have to admit that UE was really lucky from the outside. Even Thiele was hot from the perimeter.

The team’s system in defense especially the full court press is there kaso we dont anymore have the players who could execute it to perfection. Gone are the days when we had 100% pure hussle intensity players like Arana, Cardona,Cortez and Yeo who stikes fear to the opposing backcourt.

I agree, we could have played better defense but what a nightmare of a day for our alma mater.

Injuries, poor shooting (include shot selection) and an opponent who could do nothing wrong! In the end I was actually surprised we only lost by 6. UE was quite simply, awesome yesterday!

While we are noted for bench points, Rico was not very productive against UE and JVee was a marked man. James, Simon and Marko’s injuries surely took its toll on Franz’s rotation. James did well to continue playing despite two ankle twisting events (not cramps), he still managed to score the most points. Even Rico had a scare!

You gotta hand it to UE. It really looked like they built their team with revenge in mind and excuted it to a “Tee”. It was almost like the whole team was designed, trained and built to do one thing… Beat La Salle!

Lets not be too harsh on the boys tho and credit UE for its crippling defense. Thats what made us look bad. The good side of that, is that it showed our coaching staff our weak points.

Our awesome rookies need more seasoning to develop that steely resolve against the press and raise their confidence in themselves. Maui had another great game but did not play as much as I thought he should. Where was Ferdinand, why didn’t he play? Revilla had a good game too offensively but against the press looked to “tighten” up along with Hyram. Our set plays need tweaking and our run and gun game needs to be stepped up. Despite the high turn over, Franz did seem to make the adjustment to counter the trap and looked to do better against it, towards the latter stages.

La Salle got a taste of its own medicine as the UE press is exactly what we do to our opponents. Yesterday they just did it better than we did. This must be a Pumaren trade mark as the teams do seem to play similar games. They just built it differently around their respective talents. With JV and Rico limited to 9 and 3 respectively, UE did their homework well and their defense is what really won the game for them and our bench with many offensive choices was what kept us in!

Ending the first round 3rd overall is not a bad place to be. The final 4 seems clear. Only UST is the other team capable of busting up the current top 4. Guess its just a matter of wether UE or UST will be more consistent. My money is on UE after what I saw today and given the Pumaren penchant for tough defense with “peaking” at the right time factored in, FEU, despite ending on top, should be wary of the 2 two tho.

The second round promises to be an exciting and challenging one.

    Animo La Salle!

Im proud to our team! Depite the odds they never gave up. And what many considers to be a bad game for us, we only lost by 6.

Setbacks brings knowledge and experience. Looking forward to a better second round.

what’s d issue regarding Franz? is he leaving dlsu?

  • http://paulaandreamarie.multiply.com pam

    defense..
the team actually had it..but more on the inside lang..look,thiele and espiritu didn’t got points inside the paint..that’s why thiele is taking his shots outside..na super swerte lang talaga, almost lahat ng points nila galing sa outside..it was really james martinez show, sabi nga nia sa tito ko na professor niya, “sir, sinuwerte lang!”.

for the team, simon was a big factor. yah, he doesn’t make the points pero he knows every play..that’s why, jvee and rico didn’t operate that well..
big factor, maui and la.. feeling ko for this round ill give the rookie award to maui..for la, dahil nakamiss siya ng games nakabawi siya..wothout them malamang hindi na napababa yung score..

for sure, the coaching staff knows what to do..i know that the team can beat the arriors in the next round..

Von – no, he’s not leaving La Salle. He just have some RP Youth duties to fulfill which might make him miss a few games for us.

  • Camille DQ.:)

Hey.:) Is there new news about Simon Atkins? Get well soon sa kanya.:) What a game.:) The Rookies play good on court.:) Villanueva and Batgatsing, really stepping up.:) How’s Rico, James and Marco? Woohhoo.:) Okay lang yan.:) Bawi sa Thursday.:) ANIMO LA SALLE.:)

  • Bruticus

I hope the 4 archers get well soon. Marko B. is out na due to an ACL injury.

  • LS

Marko is a big loss. His contribution might not show up in the stat sheet. But his presence inside really intimidates the opponent’s shooters. I’ve seen this happen several times. May ibang dating ang presence ni marko sa loob. Parang sa UE, Thiele couldn’t make his shot in front of Marko.

    Go La Salle!

By the way, bait talaga ng NU sa DLSU. Tinalo ang FEU. para ma-tie pa sa 2nd place hehe
