NSL – DLSU clinches quarters spot

De La Salle demolished Mapua Institute of Technology, 72-53, to clinch the last quarterfinals seat in Group C of the 2009 Nike Summer League seniors division at the FEU gym in Morayta, Manila last May 20.

Unlike in their previous games against lowly City Colleges of Manila and STI-Sta Rosa, the Green Archers frustrated the Cardinals all throughout the 40-minute contest to remain unbeaten since coming off a month-long training in Chicago.

With the victory, La Salle improved to a perfect 3-0 record while eliminating Mapua from quarterfinal contention after finishing its elimination round campaign with a 3-2 record.

DLSU has two remaining outings against Lyceum-Manila and the other Group C quarterfinalist Far Eastern University on Friday and Monday, respectively.

A win against the Pirates would set up an intriguing match between the Archers and the Tamaraws for the top spot in the said group. The winner will play either FEATI or Perpetual Help in the final eight while the loser battles San Beda College, the top team in Group B.

Bader Malabes was the lone double-digit scorer for the Taft-based cagers with 12 points but got nine markers apiece from sophomores LA Revilla and Hyram Bagatsing.

Already ahead by 10 points, 40-30, at one point of the third quarter, Malabes led a furious spurt as La Salle ballooned its lead to a high of 23 points, 78-53, with less than two minutes left in the game.

Macky Acosta and Randolph Soriano led the Cardinals in a losing cause with 10 points apiece with the latter hauling down six rebounds. Allan Mangahas, meanwhile, tallied eight markers.

We’re defenitely on a roll! Reminds me of 2007 wherein we did so well in the pre-season and won both the NSL and Fil-Oil tourney

    Keep it up guys! Animo!

There seems to be a lot of fuss about FEU nowadays. Are they a favorite coming in to the next UAAP season?

FEU has to be considered as a serious contender. They have Barroca, who has been one of the Philippine team’s best players. Cawaling and Baracael (not sure if he’s still playing this season) are also on the national team. I think even Aldrech Ramos, who’s on the national team is also with FEU. Plus they have some incoming players who have already finished the residency requirements.

Ateneo and FEU will most likely battle for the top 2 slots, while UE, UST, and even Adamson will crowd us for the last 2 final 4 slots.
