Coach Dindo Pumaren is no stranger to rebuilding

Whether there will still be any drastic changes in the Green Archers’ preseason roster before the UAAP opens on July 10, what is certain is that this team is still a work in progress. For new head coach Dindo Pumaren, handling a rebuilding team is no stranger for him as he was also in a similar situation when he started his coaching career.

When Pumaren was appointed head coach of the UE Red Warriors back in 2004, he inherited a team that was completely drained of talent. With the departure of Paul Artadi, Olan Omiping, Arnold Booker, Jay-ar Estrata, Philip Butel, Jayson Alminario and some guy named James Yap, the Warriors not only lost its entire starting unit but also most of their utility guys off the bench.

Coach Dindo had 10 rookies in his first year with UE. Though veterans KG Canaleta, Paulo Hubalde and RJ Masbang are still with the team, the Warriors weren’t expected to go anywhere that season after a major line-up overhaul.

Surprisingly, the once lowly-regarded Warriors did quite well that year. They were 4-3 after the first round and ended the season at fourth place with an 8-6 record. Just when everyone thought they would languish at the bottom of the heap, the Red Warriors overachieved.

This year, Coach Dindo is again tasked to handle a team composed of a few veterans and a swarm of rookies and sophomores. Can he also help this team exceed expectations in his first year as head coach?

JV Casio’s endgame heroics help Smart Gilas win invitational tourney

Once again, when it comes to crunch time, Casio is the right brand. Former La Salle Green Archer JV Casio waxed hot in the final stretch as he helped his Smart Gilas team defeat Jordan, 91-80 in the finals of the Smart Philippine Invitational Challenge at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium last night.

Not even a knee injury he sustained a couple of months back could stop JV in delivering the goods when the team needs him to do so. He scored 12 of his 15 points late in the game as Gilas pulled away from the Jordanians for good. The team thus avenged an early tournament loss to this team, who will be playing in the World Championships this year.

Good luck to JV and Smart Gilas in their succeeding tournaments.

Young St. Benilde team hopes to blaze its way back to the NCAA elite

Starting this season, this site will cover on a regular basis the games of the College of St Benilde (CSB) Blazers men’s basketball team.

After winning the NCAA title in just their third year of participation back in 2000, the Blazers slowly fell out of prominence in the seasons that followed. Despite having enough talent to at the very least compete for a final four berth, the team has been a regular fixture at the near bottom of the standings in recent years. Coaching stability could be a factor as to why the Blazers face difficulty in maintaining a solid basketball program.

In memory of Bro. Ceci

Please include in your prayers Bro. Cecilio (Ceci) Hojilla FSC. He left us exactly a year ago today. Bro was the biggest supporter of all our teams, especially the Lady Spikers. I’m sure where ever he is, he’s still cheering loudly for our teams. . . ANIMO!

Green Archers’ Preseason Report Card

The De La Salle Green Archers’ preseason officially ended two weeks ago and their UAAP campaign is set to get underway this July 10 against UP. Before we start on the team’s prospects in the upcoming UAAP, let’s take a look at how the team performed in the last Fil-Oil Flying V Invitationals.

The team started the tournament on a high note, notching two straight wins against Letran and EAC. After their first loss to a much-improved UP team, the Archers stunned Ateneo before heading off to Chicago for a two-week training. Things got ugly upon their return as they absorbed consecutive blowout defeats at the hands of Perpetual and San Beda. La Salle thrashed Arellano to nail the last quarterfinal berth before bowing to eventual champion San Sebastian in the knockout playoffs. They ended their preseason with a 4-4 slate.

Using the grade-point system, we made our own assessment on the team’s preseason based on several categories.

Animo Squad bags 2nd place in Fil-Oil cheerdance

The De La Salle University Animo Squad grabbed runner-up honors in the Fil-Oil cheerdance competition held last Sunday night after the men’s basketball finals (San Sebastian won over FEU) . The squad gets seventy five thousand pesos. University of Perpetual Help was adjudged champion while Adamson University placed third.

Earlier this year, the squad finished 4th in the prestigious National Cheerleading Championship. We hope that their progression will continue in the UAAP Cheerdance  and be among the top 3 in the competition as they constantly did back in the 90′s.

Lady Archers finish 2nd in Father Martin’s Cup

The De La Salle Lady Archers lost to the Adamson Lady Falcons 74-58 yesterday in the finals of the Father Martin’s Cup preseason basketball tournament. Our cagebelles kept in step with the defending UAAP champs in the first half but in the end, the Lady Falcons’ brute force was just too much for them to bear. The Lady Archers won the tournament last year.

Overall, the team performed well in this summer league and we look forward to a better season for them in the UAAP this July.

UAAP Season 73 teaser by De La Salle University

We present to you the much-awaited teaser of UAAP Seaon 73 which starts July 10. De La Salle University will host this year’s season which happens to be their 4th time in doing so since joining the league in 1986.

The theme for UAAP Season 73 focuses on Heroism. UAAP President Bro. Bernie Oca FSC, launched a heroes theme during the media briefing last week at DLSU. “Because we need heroes… I want people to realize there’s a hero in each and every one of us.”, he said.

Hosting this year’s UAAP is also in line with La Salle’s preparation for its forthcoming centennial celebration.
