Junior Lady Archers now 3-0 in WNCAA basketball

Contributed by Louie Razon

The DLSZ women’s basketball team goes to 3-0 in the ongoing WNCAA tournament at the Rizal Technological University gym after beating San Beda Alabang 66-32.

In contrast to their two earlier wins, a 2-point victory over St. Jude and a come-from-behind victory over Chiang Kai Shek, the outcome of this game was never in doubt as the Junior Lady Archers quickly zoomed to a 10-0 lead and just overwhelmed their neighbors in Alabang.

If the team wins its next game (St Paul’s College of Pasig on September 17), this will give DLSZ a sweep of their group. The WNCAA Juniors tournament has a two-group format, with the top two teams from each group facing each other in a cross-over semifinal.

Ladies, Juniors set sights on Final Four

The De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers end their elimination round campaign with a loss to the Ateneo Blue Eaglets 67-56 last Saturday at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The defending champion Eaglets led throughout the match as they played relentless defense on the DLSZ’s top guns. Axel Torres was the only player who scored in double figures with 12 points while Gabby Reyes was limited to just 4 points. As a team, the Junior Archers were a woeful 22 for 79 from the field as compared to the 55% shooting clip of Ateneo.

DLSZ, with an 11-3 record finishes 2nd in the standings and will still get the twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four. They will face the NU Bullpups (10-4) this Friday, 3PM at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The Blue Eaglets (9-5), just like their senior counterparts are also aiming for a 4-peat this season. They will face FEU (12-2) in the other semis matchup.

Meanwhile, the De La Salle Lady Archers pulled out a come-from-behind 47-39 win over NU at the end of the eliminations last Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym. Aracelie Abaca led the team with 12 points and 18 rebounds.

Despite finishing with the same 10-4 record as UST and AdU, La Salle was relegated to the 4th seed in the Final Four by virtue of an inferior quotient. They play top seed FEU (12-2) this Friday, 11AM at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The View From the Armchair: Final Game vs FEU

At last the season’s over. Perhaps mercifully so. The most painful and frustrating season in recent memory ended not with some success as many of us supporters had hoped, but with possibly the worst record of any Green Archer team in the UAAP as the team lost 57-66 to FEU yesterday.

Despite competing effectively with the Tamaraws for the majority of the first half, the Archers faltered anew in the last 2 periods to allow FEU to hang on to 3rd place in the standings while the Archers fell to 6th, another historic low for this team with a proud tradition of success and excellence.

So what happened?

This was the final game for captain Simon Atkins and Maui Villanueva, and they gave it their all in an effort to help the team upset the favored Tamaraws. Simon played his best game of the year, delivering 16 points off  several treys, assisting his teammates, and harassing Garcia and Romeo on defense. Joshua pitched in with a vintage Webb performance, scoring 10 points in a quick 4-minute span to almost single-handedly bring the Archers back into the game in the first half. AVO and Jovet battled FEU on the boards and managed to sink 11 points each, but the rest of the team only totaled 8 points. Point guards LA and Almond only scored a basket each, underscoring the inconsistency plaguing the Archer offensive. Read more…

Hard-fighting Archers yield to Tams in last game

A little over two months ago, the Green Archers stepped on the court for their first game of the season against the same FEU Tamaraws squad from Morayta. And now, for the last game of a season that had not panned out as they expected, they were up against the same team.

Forty minutes later, both teams faced their respective crowds as FEU’s alma mater hymn blared through the speakers, with their yellow-clad students who filled the upper-tier sections of the Smart-Araneta Coliseum singing in unison. On the hardwood, Tamaraw RR Garcia beamed as he answered questions from their courtside reporter while being interviewed on camera.

Over at the other side of the court, the Green Archers wore varying expressions. Some of them hung their heads low, while others wore pained expressions. There were two Archers, however, who could not keep themselves from shedding tears, not only because they had suffered another stinging setback, their ninth for the season, but also because it was their last game donning the fabled Green-and-White jersey: Team captain Simon Atkins and Maui Villanueva.

Hugs and words were exchanged between the Archers and their coaching staff as they prepared to sing the alma mater hymn. Atkins shared a long embrace with La Salle Head Coach Dindo Pumaren. People from the stands hoisted banners which bore messages of praise and thanks for Atkins, whose team-high 16 points were not enough to prevent the Archers from falling into the sixth place, the second time in three years that they have wound up at that spot. Another bigger banner that was being held by fans was about the celebration of the school’s centennial year, although the mood that prevailed over the team was anything but festive. Read more…

Pregame: DLSU vs FEU 9/11

The Green Archers will wrap up their UAAP campaign this Sunday against the FEU Tamaraws. Game time is at 3PM.

La Salle, expected at the beginning of the season to contend for the seniors basketball crown will not be going to the Final 4 after losing to NU last Thursday. With one more game remaining in a rather disastrous season, all they have left to play for is pride.

Rather than focus again on all the woulda, coulda and shouldas, we would like to take this opportunity to request everyone to troop to the Araneta tomorrow and watch their last game. Despite a rough season, let us show that we are still behind this team 100 percent.

Tomorrow will also be Simon and Maui’s last UAAP game. Simon was instrumental in giving DLSZ its first juniors title in 2005 and still chose to go to DLSU despite the one-year suspension. As a rookie, Simon was part of the 2007 seniors championship team. Maui, in his 4 seasons with the Archers gave it his all every game especially on defense. Let us give our appreciation to these two guys for their valiant efforts while donning the green and white.

It’s not over yet. There is one more game to be played and let us all go out there and end the season with a bang.

CSB overwhelmed by Baste. Greenies crush Staglets

College of St Benilde simply had no answer for Calvin Abueva’s 20-20 performance as they lose to San Sebastian College 80-76 yesterday. Abueva finished the game with 27 points and 20 rebounds for the Stags, still undefeated with a 13-0 slate. The Blazers played their first game without Mark Romero, their 4th leading scorer who recently migrated to the US.

Paolo Taha led Benilde with 16 points while Jonathan Gray and Carlo Lastimosa added 15 and 14 markers respectively. The Blazers fall to 5-8, tied for 5th with Lyceum and just a game behind Mapua.

In juniors basketball, La Salle Greenhills crushed San Sebastian 82-53 to remain tied with Letran for 2nd at 10-3.

The View From the Armchair – Game 13 vs NU

Roll over. Play dead. Sound familiar? Sure. They’re dog tricks. Today, we were playing the Bulldogs of NU. And with NU’s on-and-off (mostly off) performance this season, we were kinda hoping we’d see those tricks on the court, to be exhibited by NU after we beat them. Well, we did see a team roll over and play dead. But not the ‘Dogs. Unexpectedly, it was our team that did those tricks. And very little else. A big egg from the field in the final 7 minutes of the game spelled disaster for the Archers, and wrote finis to their faint playoff aspirations.

So the season ended prematurely for us with still a game to go. Not with a bang as many of us had hoped, but with a whimper, the Archers falling apart in crunch time to get blown out by NU, 40-56 after entering the final minutes with the lead. The loss gave UST free passage into the playoffs regardless of the outcome of their last 2 games. In a dramatic fall from their traditional competitiveness, the Archers failed to get past the eliminations for the second time in 3 years.

It was another exercise in offensive futility, leading at the end of 3 quarters, 35-32 only to score a measly 5 points in the final 10 minutes against the weak defending Bulldogs while allowing them to explode with 24. How many single digit quarters have the Archers had this year? We managed to do it in both our games against NU, the first being a 2-point quarter in the first round. Today we had two of those, so Coach Eric must really have figured out our system for his team to do it repeatedly to us. Or maybe our coaches haven’t figured out the puzzle yet after 13 games. And with only 1 game left in our season, it’s highly unlikely that they will get it right. That is, if they even know what’s wrong in the first place.

Is it a question of competence? Or ability to inspire and motivate our players? Why haven’t they managed to bring out the best in our players? Or conversely, why have they repeatedly managed to bring out the worst performance from this team this season? At this point, it doesn’t matter anymore. The sad reality is that the team’s leadership failed to deliver the expected results this year, despite an extensive and expensive training program that included foreign trips.

The loss brings the team to 5-8, with only one team failing to beat us – UP. At least we swept one school this year. Read more…

Pregame: DLSU vs NU 9/8

The Green Archers fight for survival continues tomorrow as they play the also-ran NU Bulldogs. Game time is at 1PM.

The bad news is that even if La Salle manages to win this game, their Final Four aspirations will end if UST defeats FEU in the second match. The good news though is that the Tamaraws are still in the running for the second spot in the semis so expect them to play inspired basketball against the Growling Tigers.

But first things first, the Archers need to dispose the Bulldogs, whom they defeated in the first round. The team showed in their comeback victory against UP last Sunday that they thrive on a free-flowing, open court style where they get to maximize their natural offensive abilities. Let’s hope they carry the momentum in their next games.

Entering the Final Four still remains a tall order for the Green Archers but we remain optimistic that they can pull it off. Two more wins and a lot of luck.

Refuse To Lose!

The View From the Armchair – Game 12 vs UP

Almost but not quite. Just when we were beginning to think that entertaining any hopes of making the final 4 would be an exercise in futility, the Green Archers proved us wrong. Again.

The Green Archers flirted with disaster early in the game against UP, in the process almost preserving their immaculate record in the second round before managing to eke out a 1-point victory, 73-72. In a game of streaking teams (losing, that is), UP threatened to break theirs and snuff out our faint hopes of making the playoffs. Only a almost superhuman effort behind a 50-point second half production allowed the Archers to rally from 12 points down at the half to wrest the lead in the final 10 minutes and weather UP’s last ditch stand. I guess we were lucky that UP is a weak team, or our steak would still be alive. And we’d bid adieu to the playoffs. Not so fast. We’re still alive, albeit just barely.

UP sprinted to an early lead behind another Archer single digit quarter (only 7 points in the first)  which, coupled with our double digit turnovers, allowed them to build a 16-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 7-23, then log an unbelievable 20-point lead at 11-31 early in the second quarter. Those miscues, backed up by another porous zone defense (we did it again!!!) allowed UP to dominate the proceedings in the first 20 minutes. Only a strong finishing kick allowed the Archers to trim the lead to 12 at the half. But they made up for that lackluster performance by ratcheting up the intensity in the final 20 minutes, cutting down the turnovers to just 5 while forcing UP to cough up the ball 11 times in the same period to end the game with just a hairline lead. Jrs cruise past UPIS. Lady Archers lose to FEU in OT

The Junior Archers crushed UPIS 78-56 Saturday to remain tied with FEU for first place at 11-2. Gabby Reyes led DLSZ with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Though already assured of a final four berth, the team’s last elimination round game against Ateneo (8-5) is still a must-win. With the second round ending this Saturday, the NU Bullpups (10-3) can force a three-way tie for the top spot if they beat FEU and if the Junior Archers lose to the Eaglets. A win by DLSZ will assure them of the twice-to-beat incentive in the semis.

Meanwhile, the Lady Archers fell a tad short in their comeback as they lose to FEU 59-53 in overtime last Sunday. Trailing for most of the match, La Salle managed to tie the score in the closing seconds of regulation. Unfortunately, they were not able to sustain their run in the extra period as FEU escaped with the win to remain on top of the standings at 11-2. Despite the defeat, the Lady Archers (9-4) still can force a tie for the second final 4 seed if they win their last elimination round game against NU coupled by a UST (10-3) loss to FEU this Sunday.
