Los Banos, Laguna – Matinee actor Enchong Dee led De La Salle University (DLSU) to end its six-year drought in the men’s division of the 72nd UAAP swimming championships on Sunday at the Trace Aquatics Center.

Dee, who is a mainstay of ABS-CBN teleserye Katorse, claimed his third Most Valuable Player (MVP) award as he won seven golds for DLSU.

Dee ruled the 800-meter freestyle (9:14.84), 200-meter Individual Medley (2:15.42), 100-meter butterfly (57.38), 50-meter butterfly (26.37), 400-meter Individual Medley (5:01.09), 1,500-meter freestyle (17:39.69) and 200-meter butterfly (2:13.74).

Dee’s exploits accounted for 63 of DLSU’s 240 points to top the competition after falling short last season. DLSU, the runner up last season, won its first men’s swimming title since 2002.

Meanwhile, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) improved on its fourth place finish last year as it wound up runner up with 196 points. Last year’s champion UST managed only 189 points to end up third.

In the distaff side, University of the Philippines (UP) swam its way to the title after emerging with 257 points.

The gold medal finishes of veterans Marielle Infantado sa 200-meter butterfly (2:32.80), rookie Claire Adorna sa 50-meter butterfly (32.19) and 4×100-meter medley relay team of Infantado, Andrea Belludo, Queenie Lao at Kristine Lapiz (4:50.10) clinched the title for the UP Lady Maroons.

Season 71 champion ADMU fell short this time with only 233.5 points while DLSU came in third with 137.5 points.

Red vs Blue in the UAAP Finals

Photos courtesy of inboundpass.com

Fighting out of the red corner, here are the Warriors from Recto. Seeded 3rd in the final 4, they overcame the odds by defeating the FEU Tamaraws twice. They thus eradicated the stigma of countless years of playoff setbacks. They are two wins away from achieving an even greater feat; ending a 24-year title drought.

Fighting out the blue corner, here are the defending champion Eagles from Katipunan. With a 13-1 elimination card, they barely struggled all season and immediately disposed of the Tigers in the final 4. They are two wins away from achieving back-to-back championships, something they last did in the late 1980s.

In terms of talent and experience, it’s pretty obvious that Ateneo has the advantage in this series. Nonetheless, there’s still no such thing as a sure thing especially in the UAAP. Both teams would probably agree with us on this one.

Junior Archers face Blue Eaglets in Finals

The green-and-white basketball season isn’t over yet.

It’s a green vs blue showdown again this coming weekend. This time though, it will be in the High School division as our top-seeded Junior Archers try to reclaim the crown against the defending champion Blue Eaglets.

This will truly be a battle of champion teams. De La Salle Zobel and Ateneo HS have alternated as champs since 2005. The Eaglets have constantly been a powerhouse in the Juniors over the years. The Junior Archers on the other hand have emerged as a serious contender in the past few seasons.

Leading the charges for DLSZ are seniors Gwyne Capacio (son of FEU coach Glenn Capacio), Nico Elorde (Grandson of boxing legend Flash Elorde), Luigi Dela Paz and Arnold Van Opstal. The team only lost twice in the eliminations to finish on top of the heat at 12-2. They crushed the Baby Tams in the F4 playoff to nail the first finals seat, achieving some payback after FEU knocked them out in last year’s F4 playoff.

The Blue Eaglets are anchored by 3rd year guard Kiefer Ravena. Yes, just him but man, this kid is simply phenomenal ever since he started playing in the High School ranks straight from Grade 7. The son of former PBA player Bong Ravena is surrounded by a stellar supporting cast among them Rafael Banal, the son of former Blue Eagle coach Joel and brother of current Green Archer Gab. Though Ateneo was seeded 3rd in the semis, they overcame the twice-to-beat advantage of the UST Tiger Cub to set up this dream matchup.

The Junior Archers defeated the Blue Eaglets in the championship series in 2007. Will DLSZ nail its third championship in four years of participation or will it be payback time and a back-to-back for Ateneo?

The rivaly here may not be as intense as in the Seniors but this upcoming title series will still definitely by an exciting one to watch. Game 1 will by this Saturday, 4PM at the Fil-Oil Flying-V Arena. Let’s cheer on our Junior Archers. See you there.

Juniors clinch finals berth; other updates

  • The top-seeded Junior Archers defeated FEU 86-69 yesterday as they make it to the championship round. It was a sweet payback for the DLSZ after losing to the  Baby Tams in last year’s semis despite having the twice-to-beat edge. Forward Gwyne Capacio led La Salle with 32 points along with 17 rebounds. They await the winner of the UST-ADMU series.

  • Earlier, our cagebelles fell to Adamson 55-50 in their Final 4 match-up. The Lady Archers end their campaign at 3rd place; a big improvement in recent years.
  • Kudos to our Womens and Mens Badminton team for finishing 1st and 2nd respectively.

Sponsored Post: LEXI: Full AXEss

If you are male, single and lonely, getting a pretty girl’s number can be such a daunting task especially if you are a bit shy and coy. For an added dose of sex appeal instantly or that whiff of confidence to the air, grab a bottle of Axe for that “Axe Effect.”

Just like those TV commercials where a man douses his body with the deodorant creating such a fuss for women that they end up sticking to him like glue. Well, it is good to know that unleashing a chick’s inner desire has never been this easy.

This is exactly what happened to the sweet and demure college sophomore named Lexi. On a hip and happening Saturday night at Fort Bonifacio Global City, this girl next door along with her group of best friends decided to go clubbing at Hierarchy. There were a lot of cute guys but no one caught her fancy. But when she ordered a light beer in the bar, something magical just happened. Right beside her was a guy who smelled unbelievably good.

It turned Lexi’s world around in a matter of seconds. She then became brave and bold enough to do something daring, which she has never done in her life. As she smelled his sexy Axe scent, this innocent looking beauty transformed into a queen of seduction and wrote her number across his chest using her lipstick. Now, that’s fierce.

Since Lexi wants the Axe man to call her badly, she has been spotted doing attention grabbing stunts to get his attention. One is by showing up in DLSU-ADMU UAAP basketball game. When La Salle coach Franz Pumaren was interviewed by the courtside reporter, Lexi confidently appeared behind them and started waving her placard with her number, 0908-893333.

Call Me Axe Man! One of Lexi’s desperate attempts to catch the Axe man’s attention, as she and her friends hold a sign saying “Call Me 0908-8933333” during a UAAP game.

Since the UAAP season started a few months ago, Lexi has been seen in almost every game to wave her sign with her number that says, “Call me” in order to get the camera crew’s attention in hopes of attracting that Axe man of her dreams.

She has also conquered the airwaves as DJs of the popular radio program Boys’ Night Out of Magic 89.9 recently called her to ask why she’s doing all these crazy antics. They even wanted to “apply” as her Axe man. She has certainly touched all media just to get the guy to call her.

This is proof enough that getting the girl has never been easier, thanks to the Axe effect, which is the brand’s commitment to helping guys be confident to get any girl’s number. Especially if it’s a known fact that women can’t resist anyone wearing these great fragrances, which must be the Axe effect.

So, if you are in the mood for fun, call Lexi at 0908-893333 and visit www.axeonphone.com for a chance to win sexy wake up calls and caller ring back tones, which is open to all gentlemen residing in the Philippines who are 18 years old and above. For the grand prize of one of 50 iPhones, this is the perfect time to interact with Lexi and answer two qualifying questions. A caller will be provided by a unique promo code for each completed call, which will be sent via SMS. The code must be inputted in the website to gain the raffle entry. Don’t forget to register as well and if you have time, play the Numbers game.

The UAAP Final 4 Bullets

final_4-2009

The Men’s Final 4 starts this weekend. Even with our team already out it, it would still be interesting to see how the four remaining squads will fare in this stage of the tournament.

  • Will it be back-to-back for the Blue Eagles?
Just like last year, Ateneo won all but 1 game in the eliminations and it all appears that they are all set for another grand coronation at seasons end. The defending champions are in class of their own all season with their consistency and composure.
  • Will the Tams reclaim lost glory?
FEU is now experiencing the fruits of their rebuilding program which started a couple of seasons back. Solid in all positions, this then-young core has now matured and is ready to regain the crown they last won in 2005. However, issues have just surfaced regarding their best pg Barroca. Will this affect their F4 performance?
  • Will the Red Warriors finally end it?
End their age-old title drought, that is. The last time UE won the UAAP 24 years ago, none of their current players were probably born yet. Well they came close 2 years ago (we all know what happened there).
  • Will the Tigers have another miracle run?
It was not too long ago when UST staged one of the biggest upsets in UAAP history enroute to the title. Can they replicate this feat? This was during Jarencio’s first year as coach, for which he was lionized (or should it be “tigerized”?). This year, he’s been criticized for UST’s performance. Will he redeem himself? Interestingly, UST is the only team our Green Archers swept this year.

Ateneo (1) vs UST (4)

  • For UST, here’s the good news: They have the league MVP. The bad news: They have only one of him. They’re also in a 3-game losing streak and must beat the defending champions twice or call it a season.
  • Everything favors Ateneo here. UST is undersized in the paint and has  no answer against the formidable frontline of the Blue Eagles. Salva’s 1-game suspension should  not seriously undermine their chances.
  • The Tigers also have to deal with the explosive backcourt of Ateneo (Salamat, Reyes, Monfort) who are all deadly on the perimeter and the open court. UST’s Fortuna and Bautista can hit their long shots, but are inconsistent. One bright spot is Teng, but Ateneo has too many offensive options and this will definitely spell trouble for UST.
  • It will practically take a miracle for the Tigers to win twice. Then again, overcoming such obstacle is nothing new for them. If Ababou and Mirza get hot, they have a chance. History is on their side – they overcame such a semis disadvantage twice in the past which probably makes them the only school to achieve such a feat.
  • It will take 40 minutes of pure UST will on both ends of the court to take Ateneo down. The Tigers must get their fastbreak game going and be hot from the outside in order to have a good shot in this series.

Prediction: Ateneo in 1

FEU (2) vs UE (3)

Photos Courtesy of Inboundpass.com

  • This series could go either way. The teams split their elimination round match-ups. UE is on a 6-game winning run while FEU struggled in their final two games.
  • Man for man, the Tamaraws have the edge here with 3 RP team members, an explosive rookie and a stellar cast of role players. They have the deeper bench.
  • For UE, being in the final 4 certainly brings a lot of bad memories for them. They never won a series wherein they were the lower seeded team. Come to think of it, they never won a series when they had twice-to-beat edge either.
  • The Red Warriors seem like a well-oiled machine as of late but it remains to be seen if they can sustain this same intensity going into the semis. History is not on their side when it comes to these situations.
  • The Tamaraws’ experience and twice-to-beat edge might just be enough to book them in the finals but if the Warriors remain red hot, they might just pull off some surprises along the way.
  • At the forward and center slots, it’s more or less even. UE’s version of the “bruise brothers”, Espiritu and Llagas are matched by FEU’s Ramos and Cervantes. At the guard positions, UE has Lee while FEU has super rookie Garcia, Barroca, and Knuttel – advantage to FEU’s backcourt.
  • It remains to be seen if the reported issues between the school and Barroca will affect FEU’s performance.

Prediction: FEU in 2

The Women and Children Aren’t done yet

While the Green Archers are already out of the running this season, their counterparts in the Womens and Juniors division are still in the thick of things as both squads earned a slot in the Final 4 which will start this weekend.

The resurgent Lady Archers finished the eliminations at 2nd with an 11-3 mark; tied with the Adamson Lady Falcons. They will slug it out in a virtual best of 3 showdown starting tomorrow at the FEU Gym. League leader FEU will face 4th seed UST in the other match-up. The cagebelles last won the crown in 2002 to cap off a rare four-peat.

De La Salle Zobel dominated the entire season. Despite losing their last assignment, the Junior Archers still lead the pack with a 12-2 slate. They will meet the FEU Baby Tams, the same squad that scored an upset over them a year ago in the semis. DLSZ is slowly becoming a powerhouse in the high school division winning 2 out of the last 3 UAAP tournaments they participated in.
