Jacq Attack! Lady Spikers beat UP

Living up to their team name, the UP Fighting Lady Maroons put up a resilient fight to start the ballgame which enabled them to snatch the first set from the unusually sluggish Lady Spikers. But when the defending champions turned it on in the succeeding sets, the girls from Diliman realized that scoring a colossal upset is just wishful thinking.

Perhaps the only thing colossal today was Jacqueline Alarca’s game as she was instrumental to the team’s win with 22 pts and 17 attacks. With the Lady Spikers 23-25, 25-17, 25-11, 25-18 win today, they still remain unbeaten with an 11-0 slate. They are expected to breeze past their two next assignments against the lower-seeded teams in the coming weeks.

The only team standing in their way for an elimination sweep is UST who is currently in second place. The two powerhouses collide on Feb 14.

Create-A-Caption Contest: Block Party

Ah yes, pure intensity written all over Abigail Maraño’s face in this defensive sequence with Kaye Martinez. Abigail currently is among the top ten in blocks this season and it is not a surprise that  she is already part of the regular rotation in just her rookie year.

The winning comment/imaginary conversation will win an 8×10 hard copy photo of our Women’s Volleyball team.

By the way, Abigail and Kaye  seem to have both their hands on the ball. Who gets the stat?

Diez is it! Lady Spikers get win number 10

The Lady Spikers nailed its tenth win in as many games as they trounced FEU 25-16, 25-23, 25-14 today. Except perhaps for the 2nd set in which they committed 17 unforced errors, the Lady Spikers hardly felt any resistance from the Lady Tams all throughout the match. The second stringers got the job done in finishing them off in the 3rd set.

Stephanie Mercado was adjudged best player of the game with 13 points.

Sadly, this year’s Lady Tams are now just a shadow of their once formidable squads in seasons past.

Shot down the birds and chained the dogs

For the second time this season, the Lady Spikers reminded the up-and-coming Lady Eagles that they still have their work cut out for them before they can contend for the title. Behind Jacqueline Alarca’s superb performance, the defending champions defeated Ateneo today in four sets 25-15, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21 to remain unbeaten in the tournament with a 9-0 slate.

Earlier this morning, the Green Spikers pulled off a five-set win over the NU Bulldogs 25-19, 30-28, 21-25, 27-29, 15-8. Chris Macasaet paced the team with 29 points. The Green Spikers are currently at solo 4th with a 5-5 card.

Lady Spikers get the win, Heckler gets the exit

The Lady Spikers get their eighth straight win against Adamson 35-33, 25-23, 24-26, 25-17 today. Jacq Alarca led the team with 19 points while Stephanie Mercado added 18.You just got to love the first set, the score truly exemplifies both team’s tenacity to win. We salute the Lady Falcons for giving our team a good fight.

Unfortunately the same could not be said about one of their supporters who relentlessly heckled our players, coaching staff and fans. This fan was escorted out of the arena by security personnel. Such boorish behavior will never be tolerated. Looks like he was there just to throw personal insults at our team rather than cheer for Adamson.

Pipe down! It’s just a game!

Lady Spikers sweep first round

The Lady Spikers swept FEU today 25-23, 25-18, and 25-17.

Net play was excellent, resulting in multiple blocks of the FEU spikers. The strong net defense forced the FEU players to noticeably alter their shots, hitting upward or out of bounds in order to avoid the anticipated blocks. Garbin replaced Martinez as setter midway in the third set, and ably orchestrated the Lady Spikers’ offensive thrusts. Stephanie Mercado’s shotmaking was excellent as usual, mixing up her power shots with accurate placements to find the holes in the FEU backline. The Lady Spikers were also a bit stingier with their service miscues than in previous games. Vivas was so intimidated by the net play that she was generally tentative in the final 2 sets and committed several uncharacteristic unforced errors.

With this victory, the Lady Spikers sweep the first round, 7-0.
