Pregame: DLSU vs UST 8/25

The Archers will try to get back into the groove as they clash with UST tomorrow.  Game time is at 3PM.

La Salle is coming off a very disappointing loss over the UE Red Warriors last Saturday. Until now, the rabid faithful continue to be extremely affected by this harrowing defeat. A lot has already been said by our readers here so there’s nothing much to say about the team’s current struggles.

If the Green Archers wish to continue playing beyond the elimination stage, they should stop playing catch-up and sustain the same energy throughout a full game. Also, those expected to score need to be consistent. Consistently good, that is. For the past few seasons, we have yet to see a regular group of guys that can be counted on to deliver game in game out. We regularly get to see different top scorers each game. Clearly, someone or some people need to step up consistently especially now that Yutien will be out for the rest of the season due to an ACL injury.

La Salle and UST are currently tied for 4th at 4-5, a game behind FEU.  This is a must-win for the Archers especially that they will be going up against Ateneo on Sunday.

Whichever team wins today will go a game ahead of the loser in the tightening race for the playoffs. This is critical with NU starting to play well in their last couple of games. Our team is still in control of their destiny, and if they win, they can use this game as a springboard, but if they lose, their chances look dimmer with Ateneo, FEU, and NU still to come.

This game will probably prove to be the crossroads of the season for our Green Archers. We may have been disappointed in their up-and-down performance so far, but this shouldn’t stop us from rallying behind OUR TEAM as they play tomorrow against their closest competitor.

ANIMO!

The View From the Armchair – Game 9 vs UE

After watching last weekend’s game against UE which we lost, 69-74, the letters D-I-S popped into my mind. Why, you might ask. No, I wasn’t about to diss the team. But because some of the words that begin with DIS could best describe my reaction to the game.

So what words begin with dis?

Disappointing. We dropped a game which we should, by all rights should have won. UE is in rebuilding mode this year after losing the prolific Paul Lee and sharpshooter James Martinez. They had previously won only 1 game, and we beat them handily in the first round.

Dismaying. The inability of the team to mount any effective counterattack after UE had seized the initiative. The boys looked lost, unable to regain their composure after the Warriors went to a 1-2-2 press, which succeeded in discombobulating the brain trust behind the team. We can dish out the press, but can we take it? Apparently not, at least against UE. For sure, the other coaches will have taken note of what and how the Warriors turned the tables on our pressure defense.

Disenchanted. After 8 games, it was expected by most supporters that the Archers would have already developed a rhythm to their game, and a familiarity with each other that would help promote smooth, cohesive Archer ball that we’ve come to expect at this time of the season. No such luck. Or was it really just luck?

Disconnected. At least, that’s what it appeared to be at times, with the Archers coughing up the ball 24 times through errant passes, traveling errors, and fumbles. All of which gifted UE with 17 turnover points while we only had 18. Again, repeating the trend of the last few games, the Archers committed more miscues than the opponents, negating our one of our historical competitive advantages.

Disappeared. The Archers’ confidence, that is. No, our players were on the court for the full 40 minutes. A couple of Archers did go down, Yutien due to a knee injury, and Luigi who was accidentally kneed on the thigh by a fellow Archer.

Disastrous. The loss of composure after the first quarter that allowed UE to grab the lead and keep our team at bay that made the disbelieving diehards wonder if this just a dream.

Distressed. After waiting a year for the team to gain a bit more maturity, the performance against UE looked like a return to the ways of 2 years ago.

De La Salle leaned on Aracelie Abaca and Hannah Viterbo as it squeaked past fancied University of Santo Tomas, 51-49, in the UAAP Season 74 women’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum over the weekend.

Abaca and Viterbo scored 12 points apiece, Trisha Piatos added 11 markers and Kady Wilson hauled down 17 rebounds for the Lady Archers, who notched their sixth win in nine games.

UST dropped to 7-2.

Meanwhile, Alexander Torres shot 20 points as La Salle Zobel regained its winning ways with an 82-58 rout of Adamson in UAAP juniors basketball on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.

Gabriel Reyes made 15 points, Kristiane Velhagen added 13 and Henri Subido scored 12 points for the Junior Archers, who bounced back from their 56-62 loss to FEU side last week after a sweep of the first round elims.

Animo! Keep the faith

We chanced on team captain Simon Atkins after last Saturday’s loss to UE, and managed to persuade him to say a few words.

Why did we lose?

“We underestimated them (UE) and became complacent,” said a disappointed Atkins in an after-game interview. “Everything’s not going well for us, we didn’t play good defense today and let them (UE) take the game away from us.”

How’s the team doing?

“We’ll forget about what happened and continue practicing hard,” he quipped. “We need to ignore the external factors that are really disturbing us and just have focus.”

“We need to play together and just start to enjoy the game again.” Atkins revealed. “A lot is talking bad about the team and some of us, the young players get affected by it but I tell them to ignore everything and just have focus.”

What does the team talk about in practice?

“No one beyond the team really knows what is happening so there is no need to mind the critiques, we just have to ignore them all and play hard basketball.”

True enough, it isn’t easy to play basketball when your support system isn’t acting very supportive at all. This does not refer only to the bench players but also to the people who have that ‘Green-blood’ too.

And some remarks from LA Revilla on supporting the team:

“We believe in our team, I hope they do also. Just continue to support the team and we’ll do our best.,” said LA Revilla.

It is not the end. The Green Archers still can prove the skeptics wrong, grab a playoff slot, and who knows, they may even go all the way! If they believe they can do well, we can, too. Animo!

Oh no they didn’t! Archers lose to UE

It happens every now and then- the higher ranked and more favoured team beaten by the league-trailing team.

It happened to the FEU Tamaraws this season, after their shocking loss to the UP Fighting Maroons.

Unfortunately this time around, it happened to the DLSU Green Archers, as they were stunned by cellar dweller University of the East Red Warriors, 74-69, in the continuation of the UAAP Season 75 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

Paul Zamar and John Noble combined for 35 of the 74-point output of the Red Warriors to help notch for their team its 2nd win in 8 games, and consequently hand the Green Archers its fifth loss this season. With the win, UE now ties UP for the last spot, while DLSU will join UST, who likewise lost to league leader ADMU, in the 4th to 5th slots.

Both teams performed almost evenly in the first quarter. But UE, behind the hot shooting of Noble and Zamar, capitalized on the errors, and poor free throw shooting of DLSU in the second to edge out the latter at halftime, 39-35.

After the half time break, both teams played sloppy basketball, committing turnovers after another. But the Recto-based squad unleashed a 9-0 run at the opening of the final canto, which saw UE’s lead balloon to 11.

The Archers’ attempt to turn the game around went to naught, as they failed to find their offensive groove and struggled in defending against the Red Warriors.

THE SCORES:
UE 74 – Zamar 19, Noble 16, Sumang 7, Santos 7, Duran 7, Casajeros 6, Javier 4, Enguio 4, Tagarda 4, Sumido 0, Flores 0.

DLSU 69 – Torres 12, Webb 11, Revilla 9, Vosotros 9, Marata 5, Atkins 5, Van Opstal 4, Dela Paz 4, Tampus 2, Paredes 2, Villanueva 2, Mendoza 2, Andrada 2
Quarter Scoring: 17-19, 39-35, 56-52, 74-69

UAAP 74 Badminton: Week 2 Recap

By Charles Usi, Sports Editor of The LaSallian

After a split decision at the opening week of the UAAP Season 74 Badminton Tournament at the Badminton Hall of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, the DLSU Green and Lady Shuttllers are back to their winning ways.

Season 73 third-placer Green Shuttlers posted back-to-back victories as they toppled the defending-champions University of Sto. Tomas last August 13 and University of the Philippines last August 14, both in convincing 4-1 scorecards.

Their female counterparts, on the other hand, suffered their first loss this season against Ateneo de Manila University, 2-3. The Lady Shuttlers posted their third triumph against University of the East before the Ateneo setback last August 13 and 14, respectively.

Both these Owen Lopez-mentored squads now share the second slots in their respective division standings.

The Green Shuttlers are tied with Far Eastern University with identical 3-1 win-loss slates after behind the undefeated National University who holds an immaculate 4-0 card.

The Lady Shuttlers also rank second with a similar 3-1 record behind league-leaders FEU and Ateneo, who are both undefeated after four games. Read more…

Pregame: DLSU vs UE 8/20

The Green Archers look to maintain their position in the top half of the standings as they face the UE Red Warriors tomorrow. Game time is at 1PM.

After another tragic loss to the Adamson Falcons last week, expect the team to “let it all out” against the last-place Warriors, whom they defeated 87-63 in the first round. There is no better cure for the Archers than to win this game convincingly in order to erase the frustration and get them back on track.

We hope to see a free-flowing, up-tempo game by the Archers tomorrow. A lot of online supporters have suggested that the team should sometimes allow their natural basketball instincts to take over rather than rely heavily on set plays. While it is still important to play within a system, players should also be given the liberty to make their own shots. Besides, this style of play has enabled the team to erect huge leads in previous games and last Sunday, come back from a 22-point deficit.

No doubt, our team has the talent and at times they should take it upon themselves to score especially if a play was not executed right. If the opportunity to make a basket is there, don’t hesitate and take it. It also helps build the players confidence. A combination of a deliberate and free-flowing offense can work well for the Archers.

The team cannot afford to lose any more games if they still want to aspire for at least the number 2 position after the eliminations.  We hope that the Archers are all fired up and will pour out their frustrations on the rebuilding Warriors.

Blazers too much for Generals. LSGH drops 2nd straight

As posted in the Manila Bulletin by Jonas Terrado

College of Saint Benilde ended its first round campaign on a high note by blasting Emilio Aguinaldo College, 80-68, in a game marred by a fistfight Wednesday in the 87th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Shifty lefty Jonathan Grey scored 17 points and hauled down 12 rebounds while Mark Romero added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists as the Blazers remained in the middle of the pack with a 4-5 record, the school’s best first round mark since 2005.

That year, the Blazers had a 3-4 slate.

The Blazers, who used a big third quarter run to rip the Generals apart, thus boosted their bid to claim a Final Four berth after forging a tie with guest team Lyceum for fourth place in the standings.

“We’re happy to finish the first round tied for fourth,” said coach Richard del Rosario. “At least we’re entering the second round knowing na may chance pa kami sa Final Four.”

The Blazers led for the majority of the contest but it was only when their center Jan Tan and EAC’s Jolas Paguia were ejected for committing a Flagrant Foul Penalty 2 each that they were able to breakaway for good.

In juniors action, LSGH losses its second-straight match as they lost to EAC 78-73. The Greenies finish the first round at 6-3.
