UAAP Fan Code of Conduct

Adopted by the UAAP Board- July 2010

Historically, sport was determined to be the more positive way of settling disputes between warring nation states. Why? Because rules were instigated to effect a measure of control on the athletes and the conduct of the activity. Next, the officials saw to it that the rules were applied to all and last, the fans could cheer for their “heroes” who brought them honor and glory. This illustrates the connection between these three participants involved in a sport event which has thus remained to the present.

As the official organizing body of the UAAP, the Board of Directors observed the escalating problem of violence during UAAP games, in particular, those involving players and fans. With the overall objective of creating a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience for all supporters/participants of UAAP games/events, the UAAP Board of Directors prepared this Fan Code of Conduct as a guide to expected behaviors. By Paula Andrea Marie Puri

  • All teams except UE were there. The Red Warriors are in Davao for a training
  • Bro Benie welcomes the new UAAP board for UST, replacing Mrs. Francisco who will be honored on the July 10 opening.
  • Leo Austria – “We can surpass our fifth-place finish. Our team is very optimistic this season.”
  • Norman Black – “It will be a difficult year for us. All the teams improved this season. FEU is the team to beat.”
  • Dindo Pumaren- “We are in the process of rebuilding. As per average, we are the youngest team. Our primary goal is to enter the final 4.”
  • Glenn Capacio – “On paper, we are the strongest team but we are actually not. Our target is to enter the final 4.”
  • Eric Gonzales (NU) – “Same as coach Dindo, we are a young team. We have 9 rookies, 4 veterans and 3 sophomores. We have the 200% support from the management. We are working hard to be at our best”.
  • Aboy Castro- “My first two picks are FEU and ADMU. There is a wide open race for 3rd and 4th. It’s tough to get the 3 and 4 spots but we are going to fight and will be all out”.
  • Pido Jarencio – “To NU, sa amin nalang yung 100% sobra yung 200%. Sa lahat, 1-7 places eh di kami na number 8. kasi sa 1-7 may tisod pa, at least ang 8 paikot-ikot lang. Sa Chinese, 8 is a lucky number. Sa dilaw ako ngayon.(sabay turo kay coach Glenn), and remember yellow is the lucky color. Basta lalaban kami.” Read more…

New-look Blazers start NCAA campaign with a win

Mark De Guzman top-scored for the Blazers with 14

Next Game – July 14
(The Arena, San Juan)
10 a.m. CSB-La Salle Greenhills vs San Sebastian (Jrs)
2 p.m. St Benilde vs San Sebastian (Srs)

It’s another rebuilding year for College of Saint Benilde but it still somehow sent a strong message that it is not keen on being called as one of the pushover teams of the 86th NCAA basketball tournament.

The Blazers, despite their lack of ceiling, went to their outside shooting, transition play and energetic efforts to beat Final Four-favorite Arellano, 70-64, to jumpstart their campaign last July 5 at The Arena in San Juan.

St Benilde led for most of the way relying on the offensive sparks of Mark de Guzman, Carlo Lastimosa and Jan Tan but its defense came through in the final four minutes to secure the victory in front a large portion of students supporting on the upper level of the playing venue.

De Guzman, a former member of the RP U-18 team in 2008, topscored with 14 points, five rebounds and nine assists while Lastimosa, a nephew of basketball legend Jojo Lastimosa, hit all of his 13 points in the second half.

The lanky Tan, meanwhile, notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds despite playing against a more heftier and athletic Arellano frontline.

CSB, despite seven consecutive losing seasons since 2003, won its fourth consecutive opening day game dating back to the 2007 season.

“The guys showed a lot of energy and I feel this is a more-talented team compared to my team last season although this is a young team so they have the tendency to make some mental mistakes so I’m hoping they would mature as the season goes on,” said coach Richard del Rosario.

Coach Dindo Pumaren is no stranger to rebuilding

Whether there will still be any drastic changes in the Green Archers’ preseason roster before the UAAP opens on July 10, what is certain is that this team is still a work in progress. For new head coach Dindo Pumaren, handling a rebuilding team is no stranger for him as he was also in a similar situation when he started his coaching career.

When Pumaren was appointed head coach of the UE Red Warriors back in 2004, he inherited a team that was completely drained of talent. With the departure of Paul Artadi, Olan Omiping, Arnold Booker, Jay-ar Estrata, Philip Butel, Jayson Alminario and some guy named James Yap, the Warriors not only lost its entire starting unit but also most of their utility guys off the bench.

Coach Dindo had 10 rookies in his first year with UE. Though veterans KG Canaleta, Paulo Hubalde and RJ Masbang are still with the team, the Warriors weren’t expected to go anywhere that season after a major line-up overhaul.

Surprisingly, the once lowly-regarded Warriors did quite well that year. They were 4-3 after the first round and ended the season at fourth place with an 8-6 record. Just when everyone thought they would languish at the bottom of the heap, the Red Warriors overachieved.

This year, Coach Dindo is again tasked to handle a team composed of a few veterans and a swarm of rookies and sophomores. Can he also help this team exceed expectations in his first year as head coach?

JV Casio’s endgame heroics help Smart Gilas win invitational tourney

Courtesy of Paula Andrea Marie Puri

Once again, when it comes to crunch time, Casio is the right brand. Former La Salle Green Archer JV Casio waxed hot in the final stretch as he helped his Smart Gilas team defeat Jordan, 91-80 in the finals of the Smart Philippine Invitational Challenge at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium last night.

Not even a knee injury he sustained a couple of months back could stop JV in delivering the goods when the team needs him to do so. He scored 12 of his 15 points late in the game as Gilas pulled away from the Jordanians for good. The team thus avenged an early tournament loss to this team, who will be playing in the World Championships this year.

Good luck to JV and Smart Gilas in their succeeding tournaments.

Young St. Benilde team hopes to blaze its way back to the NCAA elite

Starting this season, this site will cover on a regular basis the games of the College of St Benilde (CSB) Blazers men’s basketball team.

After winning the NCAA title in just their third year of participation back in 2000, the Blazers slowly fell out of prominence in the seasons that followed. Despite having enough talent to at the very least compete for a final four berth, the team has been a regular fixture at the near bottom of the standings in recent years. Coaching stability could be a factor as to why the Blazers face difficulty in maintaining a solid basketball program.

Please include in your prayers Bro. Cecilio (Ceci) Hojilla FSC. He left us exactly a year ago today. Bro was the biggest supporter of all our teams, especially the Lady Spikers. I’m sure where ever he is, he’s still cheering loudly for our teams. . . ANIMO!
