Green Archers head off to the Windy City

As reported in archerpride.com, the Green Archers will be going to Chicago this week for training at the Attack Athletics facility of top conditioning coach Tim Grover. This is where the likes of Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, Tracy McGrady and even Michael Jordan go to in order to improve their physical strength and stamina. With this training, we are hopeful that the entire team will further sharpen their game skills and be in tip-top shape for the tough battles ahead.

It is no secret that many avid supporters are deeply concerned with the team’s problem at the foul line. This was evident in last Saturday’s match against Ateneo wherein the Archers failed to make the most out their trips at the charity stripe to seal the win. We hope that this could be further addressed while they are there.

On Ferdi’s throwdown and Luigi’s clutch trey

Ferdinand’s one-handed stuff in last Saturday’s preseason match against Ateneo not only drew the oohs and the ahhs from the crowd but it also in a way sends a strong message to rivals that La Salle won’t be pushovers this season. Trailing for most of the time, his dunk was probably the spark the Green Archers needed to ignite a comeback late in the game.

When asked how it felt, Ferdinand said that he was extremely happy since that shot fired-up his teammates and the entire La Salle faithful in the arena. His two foul-shots and putback in the final seconds capped off a remarkable performance for the 4th year center as he finished the game with 11 points.

Ferdinand likewise looks forward to his match-up with Jumbo Escueta in their succeeding battles this year. He acknowledges that the Ateneo rookie is good and he needs to assert himself with his experience and speed.

Green Archers Shock Ateneo

ferdinand_04242010The Green Archers shocked the highly fancied Ateneo Blue Eagles, 77-74 in their much anticipated Filoil Flying V tournament matchup today. Trailing for most of the game, the Archers made key stops when it mattered late in the fourth quarter, and their Atenean counterparts helped seal our victory by missing their crucial free throws and making uncharacteristic endgame blunders.

Coach Dindo shortened his rotation today, fielding only 13 players, but all those who saw action played important roles in helping the Archers neutralize the height and experience advantage of Ateneo. As expected, the Archers opted for an uptempo game, gang rebounding and running whenever possible. They dove for loose balls, chased those long passes, and tirelessly fought through the screens set by the Ateneo bigs.

Surprisingly, our smaller team outrebounded Ateneo 45-39, and collared more offensive boards, 19-11. The superior early season conditioning of the Archers told on the less-fit Blue Eagles, who were left huffing and puffing at the end of the game after their frantic attempts to catch up went for naught.

Green Archers square-off against Ateneo tomorrow

Before they head off to their yearly training stint abroad, the young Green Archers get their first crack this year at their greatest rivals when they face Ateneo tomorrow in what promises to be another intense preseason showdown. In their previous summer match-up last year, the Green Archers escaped with a 67-65 win despite fielding a rookie-laden lineup.

Despite the loss of Al-Hussaini, Reyes and Baclao, the Blue Eagles are still among the heavy favorites this season. They still have the likes of Salamat, Long, Salva and Buenafe plus they boosted their frontline by adding Escueta and Erram from their farm team and Dela Cruz from San Beda. Compared with this powerhouse team, our Archers are really “green”, both literally and figuratively. We only have 5 veterans who have played over 2 years in the UAAP: Atkins, Ferdinand, Mendoza, Webb, Villanueva, while the rest of the team (11 players) are all sophomores and rookies.

With the advantage of height, experience, talent, and championship composure – Ateneo has all the odds stacked in their favor. In their first game against the taller San Beda Red Lions, the Blue Eagles were noticeably rusty in the first half, but overcame an 11-point deficit to win going away. In contrast, the Archers struggled before they eked out a 1-point win against a weaker Letran team.

The Green Archers are still in the process of blending together as a unit with so many new faces in addition to a new coach. Although they blew out EAC in the second game, the last game against UP revealed the weakness of the team against strong opposition as they lost to the bigger and more experienced Maroons last Wednesday.

The biggest advantage the Archers have over their Ateneo counterparts is speed so if they can be able to outrun them and do well in the perimeter, this can offset their lack of ceiling. Of course, with their renewed willingness to take the ball to the hoop, they will get fouled, so let’s not forget the importance of making those foul shots.

Just as in every game against them, expect it to be heated and emotionally-charged. Let’s enjoy the renewal of our famed rivalry with Ateneo tomorrow.

AN1MO!

Maroons hand Archers first preseason loss

The Green Archers absorbed their first setback in the preseason at the hands of the UP Maroons; 61-68. The Archers jumped off to a hot 10-0 start in the first quarter but the Maroons regrouped and slowly inched their way back and eventually took the lead at halftime. It was all UP from thereon as their end-game composure sealed the win for them.

The Archers looked a step slower and more tentative today as compared to their previous game. Though they played the Maroons tough, the later seemed to have more juice in their tank. The rebounds, the height, the maturity and the experience, UP just had it more today. The only thing the Archers had more were the fouls and boy did it hit them hard down the stretch.

The taller Maroons dominated the boards all game long, most especially when our bigs were saddled with foul trouble. The Archers were not able to get too many second chance points as UP took control of the paint. Adding to the woes of the team were the missed foul shots and several in-and-out attempts which could have spelled the difference in this game.

Thank You Arvie Bringas

As reported by Green Arrows of Archerpride.com, Arvie Bringas is no longer with DLSU due to academic deficiencies. As a mobile big man, Arvie was the one of the most interesting recruits of La Salle last year, as he was expected to help address the team’s need good frontliners. In his lone season playing for the Green Archers last year, Arvie averaged 4.9 points and 4.2 rebounds in 13 games. His most notable performance was in that double-overtime first round win against UST wherein he topscored with 21 points. His up-and-down performance was attributed to a groin injury he suffered in the pre-season, as well as his adjustment to the bigger and more physical competition. A versatile athlete, he also played for the Athletics team during the second semester events.

Wherever he may end up in the coming months, we wish Arvie well and we thank him for that one year he donned the green and white jersey.

Ferdinand’s big role this season

Ferdinand has always been that scrappy, hustle guy ever since he was a rookie back in 2007. Now one of the seniors of the team, a lot is expected out of him this season and so far he is delivering the goods for the Green Archers in the preseason. Ferdi has been averaging double-digit points in their first two games at the same time asserting himself in the lowpost at both ends of the floor.

When asked what is expected from him by the coaching staff, Ferdi said that it is all about being more aggressive in crashing the boards, playing good defense, and setting up picks to free-up the shooters.

Ferdi is likewise optimistic of the team’s chances this coming season. If they continue to play this way, aren’t we all ?

Green Archers Outrank the Generals

The De La Salle Green Archers notched their 2nd win in as many games today as they crushed the Emilio Aguinaldo Generals 93-69, in the 2010 Filoil Flying V Invitational Tournament at the San Juan Arena. The Archers simply blew past their Taft Avenue neighbor right from the opening tip and never game them any chance to mount a comeback.

It was a balanced scoring effort for the Archers with Joshua Webb again leading the way with 19 points followed by rookie Almond Vosotros and Ferdinand with 11 and 10 points respectively. Jarelan Tampus finally got the chance to show his true form after a forgettable debut as he chipped in 9 markers.

The rookies showed why they were highly regarded by the team officials. Tampus and Vosotros showed their ability to score, dela Paz was again effective as a swingman, while Reyes and Paredes helped clog the inside. Elorde ably orchestrated the plays, and even Herrera managed to score when he was fielded in the last few minutes.

Green Archers’ first game thoughts

We caught up with some of the Green Archers, particularly the rookies who shared their thoughts about the team’s first official game of the year. We would have wanted to ask Jarelan Tampus on how it feels to play against his former schoolmates in Letran especially his old high school backcourt mate Kevin Alas. Sadly though, he did not get the best of this match-up, committing 3 quick fouls in the early stages and all on Alas. May have been a case of over eagerness on the part of Tampus but we’re confident that he will come up with a much better performance in the succeeding games.

New Look Green Archers Debut with Win Over Letran

The young De La Salle Green Archers emerged from their extended off season with a hair thin 77-76 victory over a similarly rebuilding Letran today at the 2010 Filoil Flying V Invitational Tournament at the San Juan Arena this afternoon. The marginal basket was scored by Joshua Webb, who scored on one of his signature daredevil drives with 42.7 seconds to go to give the Archers some breathing room at 77-74. A last ditch basket by Letran pegged the score to what it was at the end.

The game was close throughout, with at least 15 lead changes and 12 deadlocks. The largest lead of either team was 6 points, which was held by the Archers at 47-41 early in the third quarter, a margin which was duplicated by Letran when they threatened to pull away at 64-70. Neither team could gain any sort of momentum, with both teams committing turnovers aplenty.

The trademark Archer press resulted in multiple Letran errors, but unfortunately our players coughed up the ball almost as many times as the Knights. Many of our turnovers were in the form of offensive fouls, as the referees called it tight on both sides.

Newly minted Archer coach Dindo Pumaren surprised observers with his starting lineup of Simon Atkins, Ferdinand, Yutien Andrada, Webb, and rookie Luigi dela Paz. One of the more noticeable coaching differences between Franz and Dindo was the substitution patterns of Dindo, who shuffled his players more frequently than Franz.
