Green Archers start 2010 against the Knights

The De La Salle Green Archers officially start their 2010 campaign tomorrow in the Fil-Oil Flying V Preseason Invitational as they collide against the same team that abruptly ended their season last year. Sans their national team players, the Letran Knights eliminated the Green Archers in the sweet 16 phase of the Philippine Collegiate Championships. The loss was the exclamation point to a disappointing 2009 season for the team.

The Green Archers are poised to bounce back strong this year but they will have to do it without several veterans who have already graduated. The team will parade a very young team with 8 rookies listed in the roster for this tournament. These new guys are no spring chickens when it comes  to winning as they were part of successful high school basketball programs.

Tomorrow will also be the official coaching debut of Dindo Pumaren. By the looks of things, the team will most likely carry on his player persona– a high-speed bullet.

Anticipated Match-up: Kevin Alas vs Jarelan Tampus – Both played together at Letran High School.

Things to watch out for: Jaypee Belencion’s encore performance of his “Three-Spree”.

April Fool’s Day Retraction

Those who checked greenarchers.ph last April 1 were greeted with a story regarding the DLSU Lady Spikers last-minute decision to join the V-league. It also mentioned that the team will parade a Japanese import.

That article, posted at exactly 12AM of that day was an April Fool’s day joke. Hence, we would like to issue an official retraction to that story as this news was taken literally by many. We did not expect that this article, even with its rather far-fetched content would gain this much attention.

For the record, the Lady Spikers will not be participating in the V-league, nor will there be any Japanese volleyball star coming to town.

Like all other stories of a similar nature that came out on April 1, this article was published in the lighthearted spirit of the occasion, and was not expected to be taken at face value.

Young Green Archers to show their stuff in summer league

rookies_filoil_04012010

Counterclockwise from right: Martin Reyes, Luigi Dela Paz, Aiki Herrera, Nico Elorde, Papot Paredes, Almond Vosotros, Jarelan Tampus and several players in the reserve list.

This year’s college hoop wars will  start this April 10 with the Fil-Oil Flying V Preseason Invitational. The De La Salle Green Archers, aiming to improve their performance this season will be fielding a relatively young unit in this summer tournament.

Looking at the current roster submitted, only Simon Atkins and Ferdinand are the only remaining members of the 2007 championship team. They will be joined by 2 juniors, 4 sophomores and 8 rookies (updated April 6). The team may be young but definitely not lacking in potential.

For the new faces in the team, most of us here are already familiar with Nico Elorde, Luigi Dela Paz and Aiki Hererra as they were part of last year’s Junior Archers squad. Team B stalwarts Martin Reyes (not to be confused with a namesake playing in UP) and Papot Paredes are incoming college sophomores.

Almond Vosotros and Jarelan Tampus are both high-scoring guards. Vosotros was part of those multi-titled SSC-R Staglet teams while Tampus was the main man for the Letran Squires last season.

Btw, the team composition may be changed until the school’s 3rd game of the tournament. It would be interesting to see if coach Dindo still has more rabbits to pull out of his hat.

Jerwin Gaco finally makes it to the PBA

After nearly 5 years of waiting, former Green Archer Jerwin Gaco will finally make his professional debut in the upcoming PBA Fiesta conference. The 29 year-old forward will be among the four new faces that will suit up for the Barako Energy Coffee team.

Jerwin, as a graduate school student played for the Green Archers from 2003 to 2004. He was part of that bumper rookie class that included JV Casio and Ryan Araña.

Jerwin was indeed the most hardworking Archer during those years and he successfully filled in the void left by the departure of several veterans the season before. As a rookie, he immediately established himself as one of the prime catalysts of the team along with veterans Manny Ramos, Joseph Yeo and Mac Mac Cardona. Despite being a rookie-laden team in 2003, the Green Archers remained a contender and was just a win short of reaching the finals.

It was just unfortunate that he was snubbed during the 2005 PBA draft. He then played in the PBL and was part of those multi-titled Harbour Centre teams.

It was the night when the UAAP’s best shared the limelight – at least on stage.

But beyond the dimly lit podium that revered Season 72′s outstanding athletes, young actor and swimming sensation Ernest Lorenzo “Enchong” Dee merited extra – and “unexpected” – attention from spectators and fellow awardees that mobbed him at the sidelines of the UAAP Awards Night on Thursday last week at the FEU Auditorium.

DLSU is 2nd again in UAAP Overall

For the second straight year, the valiant efforts of the different sports teams of DLSU resulted in a runner-up finish in the UAAP General Championship. And it seems that for the umpteenth time, the España Armada showed overall consistency in all sports disciplines in this annual athletic meet to romp off with the overall title. The perennial supremacy of the UST contingent has many wondering whether it’s the large student population or just excellent recruitment and training. Whatever it is, UST remains to be the yardstick of a great school athletic program.

Animo Squad finishes among the top in national cheerleading contest

By Andrew Jason Tan

animo_squad_030620101

The DLSU Animo Squad took one huge step in its quest to be among the cheer elite yesterday as they finished 4th in the National Cheerleading Championship (NCC). The team made significant strides from their 11th place finish last year as they put up a superb performance in this 19-team meet. They started their routine very strong and though some slip-ups happened, they managed to finish strong.

Having a word with OSD Director Edwin Reyes, he said that the squad has improved tremendously and though they did not make it in the top 3, finishing 4th place amongst all the top cheerleading teams in the country is already an outstanding feat itself. The Animo Squad are very happy with this victory and are determined to do better in the coming competitions they will participate in.

More photos of their performance can be found HERE

Congratulations!

Don en Rico’s Tender Juicy Championship

Don Allado and Rico Maierhofer, former Green Archer stars of different eras teamed up to help Purefoods win its nth PBA All-Filipino championship today via a sweep over the hardluck Alaska team. The two guys are born winners, having won multiple titles in the UAAP and the PBL.

Don, a two-time UAAP MVP and champion, was acquired by Purefoods last year and provided solid support to the more established big men in the team. Now on his 10th season as a pro, it seems that he has found a home at Purefoods.

For Rico, his pro career is just about to take-off. The second overall pick in this season’s draft, he is truly a prized catch. His overall intensity and play fits the team’s run-and-gun offense. He is currently one of the leaders for the top rookie award.

Such faith the coaching staff of Purefoods has with these two that they decided to let go of several key players during the off-season. It pays to have players who know what it takes to be a champion. Talk about instant results.
