The View From the Armchair – Game 13 vs NU

Roll over. Play dead. Sound familiar? Sure. They’re dog tricks. Today, we were playing the Bulldogs of NU. And with NU’s on-and-off (mostly off) performance this season, we were kinda hoping we’d see those tricks on the court, to be exhibited by NU after we beat them. Well, we did see a team roll over and play dead. But not the ‘Dogs. Unexpectedly, it was our team that did those tricks. And very little else. A big egg from the field in the final 7 minutes of the game spelled disaster for the Archers, and wrote finis to their faint playoff aspirations.

So the season ended prematurely for us with still a game to go. Not with a bang as many of us had hoped, but with a whimper, the Archers falling apart in crunch time to get blown out by NU, 40-56 after entering the final minutes with the lead. The loss gave UST free passage into the playoffs regardless of the outcome of their last 2 games. In a dramatic fall from their traditional competitiveness, the Archers failed to get past the eliminations for the second time in 3 years.

It was another exercise in offensive futility, leading at the end of 3 quarters, 35-32 only to score a measly 5 points in the final 10 minutes against the weak defending Bulldogs while allowing them to explode with 24. How many single digit quarters have the Archers had this year? We managed to do it in both our games against NU, the first being a 2-point quarter in the first round. Today we had two of those, so Coach Eric must really have figured out our system for his team to do it repeatedly to us. Or maybe our coaches haven’t figured out the puzzle yet after 13 games. And with only 1 game left in our season, it’s highly unlikely that they will get it right. That is, if they even know what’s wrong in the first place.

Is it a question of competence? Or ability to inspire and motivate our players? Why haven’t they managed to bring out the best in our players? Or conversely, why have they repeatedly managed to bring out the worst performance from this team this season? At this point, it doesn’t matter anymore. The sad reality is that the team’s leadership failed to deliver the expected results this year, despite an extensive and expensive training program that included foreign trips.

The loss brings the team to 5-8, with only one team failing to beat us – UP. At least we swept one school this year. Read more…

Pregame: DLSU vs NU 9/8

The Green Archers fight for survival continues tomorrow as they play the also-ran NU Bulldogs. Game time is at 1PM.

The bad news is that even if La Salle manages to win this game, their Final Four aspirations will end if UST defeats FEU in the second match. The good news though is that the Tamaraws are still in the running for the second spot in the semis so expect them to play inspired basketball against the Growling Tigers.

But first things first, the Archers need to dispose the Bulldogs, whom they defeated in the first round. The team showed in their comeback victory against UP last Sunday that they thrive on a free-flowing, open court style where they get to maximize their natural offensive abilities. Let’s hope they carry the momentum in their next games.

Entering the Final Four still remains a tall order for the Green Archers but we remain optimistic that they can pull it off. Two more wins and a lot of luck.

The View From the Armchair – Game 12 vs UP

Almost but not quite. Just when we were beginning to think that entertaining any hopes of making the final 4 would be an exercise in futility, the Green Archers proved us wrong. Again.

The Green Archers flirted with disaster early in the game against UP, in the process almost preserving their immaculate record in the second round before managing to eke out a 1-point victory, 73-72. In a game of streaking teams (losing, that is), UP threatened to break theirs and snuff out our faint hopes of making the playoffs. Only a almost superhuman effort behind a 50-point second half production allowed the Archers to rally from 12 points down at the half to wrest the lead in the final 10 minutes and weather UP’s last ditch stand. I guess we were lucky that UP is a weak team, or our steak would still be alive. And we’d bid adieu to the playoffs. Not so fast. We’re still alive, albeit just barely.

UP sprinted to an early lead behind another Archer single digit quarter (only 7 points in the first)  which, coupled with our double digit turnovers, allowed them to build a 16-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 7-23, then log an unbelievable 20-point lead at 11-31 early in the second quarter. Those miscues, backed up by another porous zone defense (we did it again!!!) allowed UP to dominate the proceedings in the first 20 minutes. Only a strong finishing kick allowed the Archers to trim the lead to 12 at the half. But they made up for that lackluster performance by ratcheting up the intensity in the final 20 minutes, cutting down the turnovers to just 5 while forcing UP to cough up the ball 11 times in the same period to end the game with just a hairline lead. Jrs cruise past UPIS. Lady Archers lose to FEU in OT

The Junior Archers crushed UPIS 78-56 Saturday to remain tied with FEU for first place at 11-2. Gabby Reyes led DLSZ with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Though already assured of a final four berth, the team’s last elimination round game against Ateneo (8-5) is still a must-win. With the second round ending this Saturday, the NU Bullpups (10-3) can force a three-way tie for the top spot if they beat FEU and if the Junior Archers lose to the Eaglets. A win by DLSZ will assure them of the twice-to-beat incentive in the semis.

Meanwhile, the Lady Archers fell a tad short in their comeback as they lose to FEU 59-53 in overtime last Sunday. Trailing for most of the match, La Salle managed to tie the score in the closing seconds of regulation. Unfortunately, they were not able to sustain their run in the extra period as FEU escaped with the win to remain on top of the standings at 11-2. Despite the defeat, the Lady Archers (9-4) still can force a tie for the second final 4 seed if they win their last elimination round game against NU coupled by a UST (10-3) loss to FEU this Sunday.

CSB’s Final 4 bid alive. LSGH wins

As posted in The Manila Bulletin by Jonas Terrado

College of Saint Benilde was able to protect a double-digit lead this time as the Blazers hacked out a gut-wrenching 66-64 win over Arellano University to keep its Final Four bid alive in the 87th NCAA basketball tournament Monday at The Arena in San Juan.

CSB, powered by athletic guard Paolo Taha and the shifty Jonathan Grey, appeared to have the win all wrapped up after posting a commanding 62-48 lead with less than five minutes left in the game.

But the CSB supporters were back on the edge of their seats – just like what happened in their last two games when they lost despite taking double-digit leads – as the Chiefs, behind the hot-shooting of Vergel Zulueta, launched a massive rally that saw them close in at 65-64 with 11.3 ticks left.

St Benilde guard Anton Altamirano was fouled in the next play with eight ticks left but only managed a split.

However, it was enough to secure their fifth win in 12 starts after Zulueta missed a game-winning triple and teammate Andrian Celada muffed a desperation fadeaway two-pointer before the horn.

The narrow victory put the Taft-based squad just a game back of idle Mapua (6-6) for the No. 4 spot in the standings but coach Richard del Rosario was far from satisfied.

“Ang naging problema ng mga players is parang madali silang natuwa,” said Del Rosario. “They relaxed and failed to follow instructions and we need to fix that.”

Taha had 12 points, six rebounds and an assist while Grey made 10 points, four rebounds and five assists and made the highlight play of the game with an “in your face” two-handed slam on Kims Pagayunan for a 59-45 CSB lead with 5:20 to go.

In juniors action, La Salle Greenhills improved their record to 9-3 after defeating Arellano 82-77. The Greenies remain in solo third behind Letran (9-2) and San Beda (11-0)

La Salle avoids letdown, stays in contention for semis

With elimination staring them in the face, the Green Archers showed grit and determination down the stretch to escape with a 73-72 come-from-behind victory over the UP Fighting Maroons. With the win, La Salle continues to hang on to their slim chances for the last remaining slot in the final four.

At the start it appeared La Salle would be headed for another disappointing loss after trailing 23-7 at the end of the first quarter. UP’s lead went as high as 20 points as they continued to out-play and out-work the sluggish Archers. But just when every La Sallian thought the season seemed over at that point, the team finally woke up and went on a 10-2 run to trim the deficit to a manageable 12 points at halftime.

The Green Archers continued its comeback in the third as they turned up their pressure defense to force UP to commit several turnovers and hurried shots. Almond Vosotros’ floater in the key gave the La Salle the upper-hand temporarily before Mike Gamboa beat the buzzer with a trey to give the Maroons a 2 point lead entering the final period.

But Almond was not done yet. The crafty guard scored 10 of his 12 points in the payoff quarter as he and LA Revilla helped La Salle erect a 57-50 lead early in fourth. Baskets by Mike Silungan and Francis Maniego kept the Maroons within striking distance heading into the final minutes of the match. A split by Silungan and a basket off a turnover by Paolo Romero cut La Salle’s lead to just 2 points with less than 20 seconds remaining.

With the Archers leading by 3 after a split by Norbert Torres, the Maroons had two chances to tie the game but both shots came up short. Romero grabbed the offensive rebound after the second 3-point attempt to score on a putback as time expired.

Torres led the team with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Vosotros and Revilla added 12 and 11 points respectively. Silungan top scored for the Maroons with 19 markers.

This is the Green Archers’ first win in the second round. With a 5-7 record, the team must sweep their last two games and hope that UST loses their next two assignments to force a tie for the 4th semis seat. La Salle does not control their fate but this should not stop them from aspiring to end the elimination round on a high note.

Pregame: DLSU vs UP 9/4

The Green Archers will try to keep its slimming  final four hopes alive as they face the UP Fighting Maroons this Sunday. Game time is at 3PM.

With a 4-7 record, La Salle is in danger of missing the final four for the second time in the past three seasons. The team is in the midst of a 4-game losing streak since the start of the second round and another loss would more or less knock them out already from final four contention.

Just like in 2009, the Archers face a big uphill climb to get out of the hole they’re in. They must sweep their next three games against UP, NU and FEU and hope that UST (6-5) falls to at least two or all of their last three elimination round opponents (AdU, FEU and NU) for them to force a playoff or gain outright entry to the semis.

That’s easier said than done. Though the Archers have the talent to pull it off, the question is if they still have the hunger and drive to extend their season. On the other hand, the Tigers have been playing inspired basketball as of late and it’s hard to imagine for them to lose all of their next three games. Let’s see what happens in the coming weeks.

The task is indeed daunting, are the Archers up to the challenge?

Junior Archers stay on top. Lady Archers enter Final 4

De La Salle Zobel pounded UE 77-48 last Tuesday as they remain tied with FEU for the top spot in the UAAP juniors basketball tournament.

John Boo and Axel Torres both topscored with 14 points while Gabby Reyes and Joseph Tempongko added 12 and 10 points respectively for the Junior Archers, who improved their card to 10-2. More game photos HERE

Meanwhile, the Lady Archers formalize their entry in the final four as they escaped with a 58-51 overtime win over defending champion Adamson yesterday.

La Salle had 4 players in double figures led by Trisha Piatos with 15 points.

The Lady Archers continue to share the 2nd and 3rd spot with UST at 9-3 , just a game behind leader FEU.
