The View From the Armchair – Game 11 vs ADMU

0-4. That’s the 2nd round record of the Green Archers after they fell to Ateneo, 62-79 last Sunday.

4-7. That’s the current record of the team.

7-7. The best-case record of the team after two rounds. That’s also the minimum that’s needed to even tie for the last spot in the playoffs.

3-0. Sweep the last 3 games against UP, FEU, and NU if they ever hope to get a tie UST, while hoping that UST obliges us by crashing and burning in their last 3 games. Both scenarios are a bit farfetched, our winning our last 3 games the more remote of the two.

So what happened against Ateneo?

Nada. Zilch. Nothing. Zero. We lost the game via rout, this being the biggest losing margin to-date this season. We lost all 4 quarters, although we were fairly competitive in the first half, falling behind by only 5 points after 10 minutes. Not very good, but not very bad either.

The team’s performance gave supporters some false hopes that the second half would see the team overcome the Blue Eagles’ perceived dominance.

C’mon guys, haven’t we learned anything after watching 10 games so far? We’ve always come to expect that the opposing coaches will use the halftime break to analyze what we’re doing, and come up with the necessary changes in their game plan, while our coaches will continue to push what they started with. Predictable. Unable to adjust. So the second half began, following exactly this scenario. The Blue Eagles pounced, we fell behind double digits, and never recovered.

The first half performance allowed the Blue Eagles to reach their comfort level because our lack of any surprises, and once they got into their preferred game groove, it would have taken an exceptional effort and extraordinarily great game for us to beat them. Both of which were beyond the capabilities of our players last Sunday. Read more…

Eagles add more woes to Archers’ already rough season

When the Green Archers began the second round against the Adamson Falcons, their goal was to win their fifth game. Unfortunately, four games later, their goal is still to notch that elusive fifth win.

After the first twenty minutes of their second round encounter with bitter rival Ateneo Blue Eagles, the Archers found themselves down by only five points. The team was bannered by Oda Tampus, who already had nine points across his name.

During the turn, the Animo Squad gave a rousing halftime performance that somehow uplifted the outnumbered gallery of Green-clad supporters. And, best of all, Greg Slaughter, the Eagles’ seven-foot center, had only spent a total of four minutes on the floor after picking his second foul early in the second canto.

However, the next twenty minutes of the match would be a different story, as what was initially a nail-biter was turned into a rout, one turnover and botched three-pointer at a time.

Unlike their first meeting wherein they were able to whittle the lead of the Loyola-based dribblers down to a handful of points, the Archers were unable to mount any kind of comeback to surmount the lead of their rivals.

By the end of the match, the score was 62-79 in favor of the Eagles, which sent the Archers reeling from their fourth straight setback and further dimmed their flickering Final Four hopes. Read more…

UAAP 74 Badminton: Week 3 Recap

By Charles Usi, Sports Editor of The LaSallian

Both squads of DLSU Coach Owen Lopez bolstered their respective championship bids as they streaked through the third week of the UAAP Season 74 Badminton Tournament last August 20-21 at the Badminton Hall of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

The Green Shuttlers blanked the University of the East, 5-0, and feathered out powerhouse Far Eastern University, 4-1 while the Lady Shuttlers swept National University and the University of the Philippines, 5-nil and 4-1, respectively.

The Taft-based squads maintained a tight grip on the second spot with identical 5-1 win-loss records behind top-notch National University in the men’s division and FEU in the distaff side, both with unblemished 6-0 records. Read more…

Pregame: DLSU vs ADMU 8/28

As posted in Archerpride.com

After three consecutive losses, the Archers look to regain some pride on Sunday as they face defending champions and unbeaten Ateneo.

Coming from a tough losses against UE and UST, games which many felt we should have won, the Archers look a bit down coming into this weekend’s game against our fiercest rival. A loss could be fatal to our team’s chances of getting a playoff slot, so this game has the significance of being a must-win in more ways than one.

It will be an uphill battle for sure, with the Archers down one key big man in Yutien Andrada, leaving Arnold Van Opstal, Norbert Torres, Maui Villanueva, and Papot Paredes to face Ateneo’s imposing frontliners led by seven-footer Slaughter, effective Nico Salva, Justin Chua and Frank Golla.

It must be remembered that rookie Ravena had his breakout game in our first round encounter, going off for 24 points with 22 in the first half. His early outburst helped Ateneo take control of the game and set the Archers on their heels, forcing them to play catch up all game long.

So the deck is stacked against us. How will the Archers respond? Read more…

Petron’s Blazing Victory

Despite losing key players to injuries, the Petron Blaze Boosters proved to everyone that no obstacle is insurmountable if you play with desire and determination. The underdog Petron team defeated Talk N Text in the recently concluded PBA Governor’s Cup Championship series which went the full route.

GoArchers.com was there to cover Game 7 of this classic series.

Former Green Archer Joseph Yeo was unable to play in this series due to injury. This is his second PBA championship.

Arwind Santos jumped for jubilation with champion coach Ato Agustin catching him.

Petron import Anthony Grundy was a revelation in this series with his clutch jumpers and swift penetrations.

The View From the Armchair – Game 10 vs UST

The Green Archers bowed to the UST Tigers, 52-60, giving UST its only first win in the UAAP since 2007 and only the second since 1999.

The loss extended the Archers’ second round losing streak to 3, and allowed UST to grab solo 4th spot with a 5-5 record while relegating us to a tie with NU at 4-6. It also put at risk the playoff berth the Archers were chasing.

In a slight continuation of the last Armchair article (vs UE), let me use a few words beginning with D-I-S. Dismayed. Disappointed. And disgusted.

What happened?

In a game which was almost a must-win, the Archers folded early. Why folded? Because it was apparent that they gave up early, allowing UST to grab a 15-point lead in the second quarter behind a dominating performance on the boards. Nowhere was the rebounding strength our team had shown last year and most of the first half of this season.

UST came at us right away with a 2-3 zone. It was an open secret that the zone defense is the Green Archers’ kryptonite, that they go to pieces at the mere whiff of the 2-3. And, yes they sure did, en route to a 21-30 halftime deficit that was never surmounted. It was as if it was the first time that the Archers had seen the 2-3, because they never managed to get going offensively.

Defensively, the Archers were able to pressure the Tigers at times, allowing them to come tantalizingly close down the stretch. Yes, the Archers did come to within 2 in the last quarter, but found a way to lose in the endgame. Read more…

Blazers fall in OT. Greenies break slump

College of Saint Benilde blew a double-digit lead to suffer a heartbreaking 94-90 overtime loss to Mapua at the start of its 87th NCAA men’s basketball tournament second round campaign at the Filoil Flying V Arena.

The Blazers led by 11 points in the second quarter and 10 in the third period before the Cardinals staged a fourth quarter rally behind rookie Josan Nimes and Allan Mangahas to take a four-point lead with under a minute left in regulation.

CSB, though, scored two quick baskets to eventually force an extra session but Mapua dominated the overtime period to forge a tie with the former for fifth spot at 4-6.

It was a disappointing loss for the Blazers, who failed to reach the .500 mark at this point of the season for the first time since the 2002 season.

That season, St Benilde reached the finals led by Sunday Salvacion but lost to San Sebastian. It was also the last time that the Blazers made the Final Four.

Carlo Lastimosa had 23 points, two rebounds, two assists and three steals but left the game with more than a minute in the overtime period due to an ankle injury. Read more…

Pregame: DLSU vs UST 8/25

The Archers will try to get back into the groove as they clash with UST tomorrow.  Game time is at 3PM.

La Salle is coming off a very disappointing loss over the UE Red Warriors last Saturday. Until now, the rabid faithful continue to be extremely affected by this harrowing defeat. A lot has already been said by our readers here so there’s nothing much to say about the team’s current struggles.

If the Green Archers wish to continue playing beyond the elimination stage, they should stop playing catch-up and sustain the same energy throughout a full game. Also, those expected to score need to be consistent. Consistently good, that is. For the past few seasons, we have yet to see a regular group of guys that can be counted on to deliver game in game out. We regularly get to see different top scorers each game. Clearly, someone or some people need to step up consistently especially now that Yutien will be out for the rest of the season due to an ACL injury.

La Salle and UST are currently tied for 4th at 4-5, a game behind FEU.  This is a must-win for the Archers especially that they will be going up against Ateneo on Sunday.

Whichever team wins today will go a game ahead of the loser in the tightening race for the playoffs. This is critical with NU starting to play well in their last couple of games. Our team is still in control of their destiny, and if they win, they can use this game as a springboard, but if they lose, their chances look dimmer with Ateneo, FEU, and NU still to come.

This game will probably prove to be the crossroads of the season for our Green Archers. We may have been disappointed in their up-and-down performance so far, but this shouldn’t stop us from rallying behind OUR TEAM as they play tomorrow against their closest competitor.

ANIMO!
