Green Archers Exit Early in the PCC

The Letran Knights defeated the Green Archers 72-83 today in their Sweet 16 match-up at the Ynares Sports Arena. With the loss, La Salle has been knocked out of this nationwide collegiate tournament. The Archers won the title last year.

Sans Kish, James and Bader, the Archers were blown out early in the game. The team caught fire in the 2nd period and managed to trim the lead a point going into halftime. Letran jumped off to a hot start to in the 3rd canto as the Archers just could not hit their shots.

The team mounted a rally midway in the final period with Arvie Bringas leading the charge. Unfortunately, Arvie sustained an eye cut and was pulled out. The Archers could not get closer from thereon as the Knights’ aggressiveness and outside snipping were just too much for them to stage any comeback.

Despite the absence of national players RJ Jazul and Rey Guevarra, a certain Jaypee Belencion showed up with his guns ablaze all throughout the game. Ten treys and 36 points; what did this guy had for lunch?

The Archers on the other hand struggled with their shots especially from the free throw line all game. Their foul shooting woes have been a common theme for this team all year and we only hope this could be solved next season.

This basically ends the 2009 campaign for our men’s basketball team and Coach Franz’s tenure as head coach. We thank Coach Franz as well as the entire team and we look forward to a more fruitful season next year.

Green Archers pair up with the Knights in the first dance

The Green Archers will face the Letran Knights this Wednesday in the first round of the PCC Sweet 16. All games leading to the championship series are all one-game knockout matches. Just by looking at the Pairings, you can see that the team will be in for a rough sailing this year.

Game time is 2PM at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

The Naga Experience

Enjoy some snapshots of the Archers’ memorable trip to the south last week. They certainly had everything going for them back there. The wins, the adoring fans and Joshua Webb’s birthday. Thanks to Mr. Achacoso for sharing these photos.

Green Archers enter PCC Sweet 16

The De La Salle Green Archers earn a ticket to the PCC Sweet 16 as they defeated the UNC Grey Hounds 91-38 today in Naga City. Placing 6th in this past UAAP Season, the Archers had to go the extra mile in order to have shot in defending their title in this nationwide collegiate tournament. The team breezed past the opposition in this 3-day Zonal meet.

What really made news is not the Archer’s dominance in this event but perhaps the lavish treatment they got from the people of Naga who watched the games. Throughout their stay there, the team was constantly mobbed by fans like they were some rock stars. How they were adored back there just shows that the popularity of the Archers is not only limited to the school community but also to the many people around the country.

The Sweet 16 starts Nov 23 in Manila. It’s now Win or Go Home from hereon.

Green Archers out of Universiade Games

FISU nixes Archers’ Serbia Universiade stint
Posted by Jasmine W Payo at inquirer.net

The La Salle Green Archers lost a chance to represent the Philippines in the 2009 Summer Universiade from July 1 to 12 after officials thumbed down the country’s application to compete in the basketball event set in Belgrade, Serbia

Michal Buchel, sports department manager of International University Sports Federation (Fisu), said the organizers prioritized the 24 slots available in men’s basketball to member-countries.

“We have had over 30 teams from the member associations and it will not be fair to select for the draw countries that are non-member associations,” Buchel said in a letter to the Philippine Olympic Committee dated March 18. “I hope that in the future you’ll become a member of Fisu and be able to participate.”

The Archers won the trip as part of a prize package after upsetting rival and UAAP champion Ateneo Blue Eagles for the 2008 Philippine Collegiate Champion League (PCCL) crown.

But Jose Capistrano, the Philippine representative of Fisu affiliate Asian University Sports Federation, said the PCCL and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas have already lined up other international tournaments as alternatives for the Archers.

“Definitely La Salle will still go to a competition abroad,” said Capistrano. “It was an honest mistake. Unfortunately, we were not aware of this provision [that only Fisu members can join the team events]. We were able to participate in the 2007 Universiade in Bangkok in taekwondo, swimming, and shooting. In previous years, we got invites even if we were not a member.”

The aborted trip disappointed the Archers, who were looking forward to the prestigious, Olympic-like gathering of varsity athletes from over 100 countries competing in 15 sports.

“It’s like we were taken for a ride,” said La Salle coach Franz Pumaren.

“We’re still hoping against hope they’ll take into consideration our appeal during the head of delegations meeting [this weekend],” said Capistrano, noting that the Philippines applied for Fisu membership back in 2007.

But Capistrano added that the Philippines earned berths in the taekwondo event where 24 UAAP athletes will compete.

The University of the East was the last basketball team to represent the Philippines in the 1967 Universiade with a lineup bannered by Robert Jaworski and Danny Florencio.

Will they stay or go to the Universiade? (inboundpass.com)

The Philippine Collegiate Champions League was supposed to have been a success. It brought together all the major collegiate teams in the country. It had a terrific final game, pitting arch rivals La Salle versus Ateneo. Everyone thought that it was the year that would be the beginning of the concept of crowning a true National Champion.

Ateneo was of course heavily favored, after it steamrolled over the competition, on the way to the finals. Even with the absence of starters Chris Tiu and Ryan Buenafe, the Blue Eagles looked formidable. A finals win would have given them a sweep of the major collegiate basketball championships.

La Salle on the other hand, had a harder time. In the semis, they had to have a late game steal and conversion to get to the finals.

In the end La Salle overwhelmed the Blue Eagles and with that, was supposed to come a slew of prizes. There was a P500,000.00 cash prize and most importantly, the right to represent the country in the 2009 Universiade Games in Belgrade.

Now it seems that a lot of what was promised before the tournament may not have come to pass. First, the La Salle team who won the championship only received P400,000.00, of which P30,000.00 was in gift certificates and P370,000.00 was in cash. The reason allegedly given for the P100,000.00 shortfall, was that it was used as prize money for the individual awards.

As I was going over the many press releases for the Philippine Collegiate Champion’s League, I saw that the amount of P500,000.00 was repeatedly heralded as the winning prize money. If the reason given was that the shortfall was used for the prizes for the individual awards, then why trumpet a prize of a half million pesos for the winner in the first place. That is a 20% shortfall or about P5,000 per member of the winning team.

The biggest prize of the PCC tournament was that the winning team will represent the Philippines in the 2009 Universiade Games in Serbia. La Salle, the PCC champion, was supposed to be that team. However, now it looks like it may not happen after all.

First, it has been rumored that the UAAP will have its opening on July 11, 2009. The Universiade basketball competition ends on July 12, 2009. Allegedly, the UAAP Board has no intentions of moving the opening date to accommodate the entry of La Salle in the Universiade. This may be because the UAAP works on a tight calendar of year-round events in different sports.

If the UAAP schedule is the issue, then it would appear that the Samahan Basketbol ng Pilipinas, of which the UAAP is a member, did not coordinate the matter with the UAAP Board before making it a part of the PCC champion team’s prize.

There are even unverified reports that it was suggested that La Salle did not have to send its top players to the Unversiade or evem that a selection of players from different schools be created for this purpose. Is that fair? If La Salle would not send their best players, then the school would be accused of abandoning the country’s interest. Sending a selection of players from different schools would take away from the integrity of a commitment made.

Furthermore, a look at the website of the Belgrade Universiade 2009, http://www.ub2009.org/dokumenta/prijave/Participation%20Forms%20Schedule.pdf, one can see that the submission of the “Intention to Participate Form” was Oct. 1, 2008, which was way before the PCCL. Secondly, the deadline for submission of the “General Entry Form” was Jan. 1, 2009. Lastly, the deadline for what is called “Final Engagement Form” or the final list of athletes who will participate, was on February 1, 2009.

The PCC is a sanctioned tournament of the SBP. Has the SBP submitted these forms? Have they gathered all the documentations of the players? Has the SBP paid the participation fee? Lastly, did the Philippines even qualify or get invited to send a team to the Universiade? These questions have to be answered in the interest of transparency.

A commitment was made by the SBP, which is the highest basketball governing body in the Philippines. Participation in the 2009 Belgrade Universiade was used as a come-on for teams to join the league. Does the winner of the PCC now have to beg to get the prize that they won fair and square? Would the same thing have happened if a school other than La Salle would have won the PCC tournament? In the event that the SBP cannot send La Salle to the Unversiade for whatever reason, they should not send a team at all, for this will have the obvious appearance of discrimination. If SBO cannot fulfill their promise, then they should instead give La Salle the money that it allocated for the tournament and allow La Salle to decide which tournament it may choose to join.

In the event La Salle goes to the Universiade but fails to qualify for the later rounds, it will be forced to leave the games early, for them to be back in time for the UAAP opening. If that happens, expect the naysayers to climb on their soap boxes and chastise the Green Archers for abandoning the tournament.

If La Salle does not get the prize that it was promised, they will not be the loser here. It will be the PCC and the SBP who will lose. The PCC would lose all the headway they made in last year’s tournament while the SBP will lose its credibility in its ability to support good leagues such as the PCC. They will definitely not get the same response they did last year if they do not deliver on their promises.

Personally, I hope that the SBP clears this matter up and makes the necessary arrangements to deliver on their promise. The PCC is too good a tournament to be tarnished with a controversy such as this.

In this final face-off for year, they certainly made sure that they will have the last laugh.

JV Casio ended his illustrious collegiate career in grand fashion as the Green Archers defeated the Ateneo Blue Eagles yesterday, 71-62 to win the 2008 Philippine Collegiate Championship crown at the Araneta Coliseum.

Casio, who played his last game for the Green and White squad exploded for 17 of his 20 points in the final half while being adjudged MVP of this tournament and a Mythical Five selection. He also dished out 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.

It was payback time for the Archers as they finally ended a long losing streak to Ateneo this year dating back to the summer pre-season tournaments. With this victory, they are now considered as the best collegiate team in the country.

The Team was awarded with the Manuel V Pangilinan Trophy, PHP500K worth of athletic scholarships and an additional PHP400K to be divided among the players. They will also represent the country in the 2009 Universiade Championships in Serbia.

Determined to redeem themselves after losing this year’s UAAP, the Archers seized control entering the 2nd half after trailing all the way in the first 2 quarters of the ballgame. La Salle’s accurate shooting and total domination of the boards, 53-39 despite their height disadvantage were key to their comeback as they led by 5 at the end of the 3rd period.

With their stingy defense and capitalizing on their opponent’s turnovers, the Archers made sure that there would be no attempts for Ateneo to stage a rally in the payoff quarter.

Peejay Barua and Bader Malabes, both instrumental in the Archers’ 2nd half blitz were among the top scorers for the team with 10 and 8 points respectively. Jai Reyes, the lone bright spot for the Blue Eagles all game long led all scorers with 22. UAAP MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini only managed to score 10 despite averaging close to 20 points in this tournament.

Earlier, Colegio de San Juan de Letran defeated San Beda College to bag third place. Joining Casio in the Mythical Five were teammate Rico Maierhofer, Al-Hussaini, Ateneo’s Nonoy Baclao and Letran’s RJ Jazul.
