DLSU Graduate School Lady Spikers – A Victorious Awakening

By Vanessa Pagharion

A History of Greatness

The battle began two years ago when half of a champion team graduated. For three straight years, the DLSU Graduate School Lady Spikers held the coveted title of the Inter-Grad Friendship Games Women’s Volleyball Competition. It was a position of recognition for these ladies whose skills and teamwork continued to echo through the hearts of many year after year. They were giants with a heart as strong as their spirits, drawing family and friends who watched their games, cheering and applauding as the team exhibited sheer determination in achieving their goal… the crown.

But just as the mythical phoenix bursts into flames before its resurrection, our champions’ regime must come to a subtle slumber.

The Calm Before the Storm

A new season dawns, the Lady Spikers, now armed with a new leader, Coach Chie Saet, the young team awakens. Only three of the veteran players remain and soon new teammates will come in. They all knew it was not going to be easy. But Coach Chie, a Lady Spiker herself, who possessed the same heart and spirit expected that the game will be tough so her team needs to be tougher.

Training ensued twice a week for the Lady Spikers with sweat rolling down their cheeks and muscles tearing from their backs. Whether they were a veteran player or a novice they all worked individually to get better and stronger. At game time, the team realized being strong as a player was not enough. As the saying goes, teamwork simply states less of Me and more of We and that is exactly what the team needed… teamwork.

As one season ended and another began, the message became clearer to the Lady Spikers that they have to act like a team to become a team. Each player had to use their skills to complement the strength of the other but that thought is easier said than done. From last season’s lineup, a few more members had been added to complete the squad once again.

Keeping up with the rigors of training was a feat for the players. As MBA, MA, MS and MBA – JD students, they had to manage their schedules for training, academics, work, and personal lives to make sure that they don’t fail in any of those aspects. But as the saying goes, when one becomes a jack of all trades he becomes a master of none, consequently the ladies began to falter at training. However, Coach Chie, determined to dig out the best from her team constantly reminded them that playing volleyball is just like taking an exam; that just as we study before a test, we have to make ourselves stronger before a game, and just as we learn what we study, we have to put to heart what is taught at training. As the team placed second in the roster and another hard fought season ended the Lady Spikers learned, the hard way, what it meant to live for the moment, forget everything else, and focus at the task at hand. Another five-set win. Lady Spikers take Game 1

This article is guest posted by PinoySpikers.com

La Salle took advantage of the absence of open spiker Maru Banaticla in the deciding fifth set to escape with a 25-18, 25-20, 19-25, 16-25, 15-10 win over defending champion University of Santo Tomas and move closer in regaining the title in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Tigresses were able to send the game to a decider, but the España-based spikers sorely missed the hard-hitting spikes of Banaticla, who suffered cramps late in the fourth frame.

“I guess yung pagkawala ni Maru (Banaticla), yun ang naging turning point ng game. Kung nandiyan pa siya, baka nag-iba ang kuwento ng laro,” said Lady Archers mentor Ramil de Jesus.

Jacq Alarca unloaded 19 hits, including four service aces, while Michelle Gumabao, Abigail Maraño and Stephanie Mercado added 13 points apiece for La Salle.

Leading MVP contender Aiza Maizo uncorked 20 hits while Banaticla was still able to finish with 19 hits, including four service aces, for the Tigresses. Cha Cruz contributed 11 points and 11 digs for La Salle.

The Lady Spikers can clinch their sixth league title with another win in Game 2 slated on Saturday.

A kill by Maizo gave the Tigresses its last lead of the match, 5-4. La Salle was able to pull away at 9-6 after a Maraño hit when UST scored three straight points, highlighted by a left-handed kill by Maizo to last tie the count at 9-9.

But this was the best the Tigresses can offer, as Maika Ortiz committed a service error followed by a block by Alarca, two successive hits by Cruz and a Maizo attacking error for the Lady Spikers to take a 14-9 spread. Maizo connected a kill for UST to inch closer to 10-14 before reserve Verlyn Bernal misfired on her serve for La Salle to clinch the match point.

It was the third straight five-set win for the Lady Spikers, who finished with a 13-1 record in the elims.

“Breaks lang ang nagpanalo sa amin. Pinahirapan kami ni Banaticla sa third at fourth set,” said de Jesus.

Lady Spikers finish 2nd. Green Spikers clinch 5th

It would have been a grand slam of sorts for the Lady Spikers this morning. Seeded 4th in the stepladder semifinals, the girls had to win 3 matches, all in the same day for them to capture the UAAP beach volleyball crown.

They almost pulled it off, beating 3rd seed UST 21-19, 8-21, 15-9 and 2nd seed FEU 21-14, 18-21, 16-14. When they faced defending champion Adamson in the finals, fatigue has probably set in as they were swept 17-21, 14-21. I guess playing 3 successive games in a span of 2 hours was just too much to bear.

Nevertheless, the Lady Spikers were able to improve on their 3rd place finish last year. Members of the team are Charlene Cruz, Mikaela Esperanza and Amanda Villanueva.

The Green Spikers, composed of Michael Antonio, John Dela Vega and Mark Lee captured 5th place.

April Fool’s Day Retraction

Those who checked greenarchers.ph last April 1 were greeted with a story regarding the DLSU Lady Spikers last-minute decision to join the V-league. It also mentioned that the team will parade a Japanese import.

That article, posted at exactly 12AM of that day was an April Fool’s day joke. Hence, we would like to issue an official retraction to that story as this news was taken literally by many. We did not expect that this article, even with its rather far-fetched content would gain this much attention.

For the record, the Lady Spikers will not be participating in the V-league, nor will there be any Japanese volleyball star coming to town.

Like all other stories of a similar nature that came out on April 1, this article was published in the lighthearted spirit of the occasion, and was not expected to be taken at face value.

Lady Spikers’ got their post-game faces on

lady_spikers_thanksgiving

This pic says it all! The Lady Spikers have already put this recently concluded season behind them and will look forward to a more fruitful campaign next year.  This was taken during their thanksgiving dinner hours after last Saturday’s game.

The team will remain intact for next season as most of the seniors still have one year of eligibility left. This of course is assuming that they decide to return for another tour of duty. The future looks bright for our Lady Spikers and even though they were not able to defend the crown this year, they still gave us one helluva performance. And for that we thank you Ladies.

Lady Spikers Fall in 4 Sets, Yield Title to UST

The Lady Spikers failed to repeat as champions as they fell to a resurgent UST in 4 sets, 18-25, 14-25, 25-16, 15-25. Led by skipper Stephanie Mercado, the team put up a valiant stand but fell prey to the taller and more experienced UST team.

ladyspikers_02272010La Salle took the first point of the match, but that was the only time they would taste the lead in the opening set. Although the Lady Spikers managed to limit their errors to 7, the same number as UST, poor reception resulted in less points on the attacks, 5 to UST’s 14. Our team’s spikes were either partially blocked or easily retrieved. Blocking was not as effective at the start, allowing UST to build their momentum and confidence as their attacks penetrated our net defenses. Trailing at 10-12, UST scored on 3 spikes and an error by Gohing to lead at the 2nd technical timeout. The Lady Spikers pulled to within 16-19 before UST went to their powerful hitters to take the first set.

The 2nd set started off on a positive note, with the team taking the lead up to the first technical timout at 8-7. However, unforced errors from our service as well as a couple of errant spikes allowed UST to take the lead, 8-11 forcing Coach Ramil to call for time and advise the players to slow things down. He also fielded Cerveza, Yeung, Gumabao, and Diego in an effort to break the lethargic play of our team, to no avail. Uncertainty and a curious loss of concentration told on the team, as they yielded the second set 14-25. In this set, UST exploited a small weakness whenever our setter Martinez was in the frontline as they shifted the ball to her side and used their height advantage to power their shots over her. With momentum on their side, UST looked to sweep the Lady Spikers.
