La Salle finishes 2nd in Father Martin’s Cup

First the bad news: Green Archers Team B lost to NU-B, 59-71 in the finals of the Father Martins Cup. La Salle led most of the way, only to falter down the stretch as the Bulldogs flexed their muscles to seize control of the game and pulled away for good.

NU really had it going in the 4th. Mainly composed of UAAP-ready players who are undergoing residency, the Bulldogs capitalized on the Archers’ lack of depth. Come the payoff period, fatigue started to set in for the main stalwarts of La Salle as they could not anymore keep in step with the torrid shooting of NU.

The good news is that LA Revilla has gotten his mojo back and Norbert Torres may just be that steady inside presence the Archers badly need. These two are primed to crack the Team-A lineup next year.

After being out of commission for over 2-years due to health reasons, LA has regained his explosiveness in this tournament.  His slashing, hustle and heads-up playmaking were a sight to behold.  Who knows how the Green Archers’ fortunes could have changed had he not been sidelined.

Norbert brings toughness in the front court. He plays with a great deal of energy inside, showing a lot of aggressiveness on both ends and also has a soft touch from the perimeter. He is that type who can attract much attention underneath

The Green Archers played minus Dan Sara who was among those instrumental to the team’s run through the tournament. The guard from San Beda High underwent surgery for his fractured nose which he sustained while playing in the FIBA under-18 tournament late last month. Jed Manguerra top-scored for the team yesterday, displaying an array of inside-outside incursions.

The other fixtures in the rotation of coach Tonichi Yturri are Maoi Marcelino, JR Gallarza and Brian Organ. These foreign-based players showed a lot of promise in this tournament. All are still undergoing residency and this gives them the opportunity to further sharpen their game and get accustomed to the physicality and intensity of local college hoops.

Lady Archers advance to the Father Martin’s Cup Finals

The De La Salle Lady Archers defeated the FEU Lady Tams 60-49 this morning and will face UAAP champion Adamson in the finals of the Father Martin’s Cup. With the win, the girls got back at the team who dealt them one of their two setbacks in this preseason basketball tournament.

The Lady Archers are looking forward to another payback, this time against the Lady Falcons in the championship match this Saturday. It was Adamson that eliminated La Salle in the final four last UAAP season and beating them here will give the team a big confidence boost heading into the new season starting next month.

Lady Archers on a roll in the preseason

It’s been almost 8 years since the DLSU Lady Archers last won the Women’s basketball championship. Led by wonder twins Jessica and Jessamyn Manalo, the Lady Archers scored a 4-peat during the early 2000s but fell out of contention in the seasons that followed. The team made significant strides last season as they finished third. With a solid core of Kady Wilson, Bernadin Yamamoto, Hannah Viterbo, last season’s ROY Miller Ong plus the addition of talented new recruits, the girls of coach Tyrone Bautista are aiming for nothing less than a shot at the crown this year.

As part of their preparation for the UAAP, the Lady Archers are currently participating in the Father Martin’s Cup. So far, the team is undefeated as they trounced OLFU, The RP Youth Team, UST and just today, NU.

Below are their remaining elimination round assignments:

May 18, 9:30am – SBC Gym – vs CSB

May 25, 9:30am – SBC Gym – vs FEU

Jun 1, 11am – SBC Gym – vs AdU

Just like the Green Archers, the future looks bright as well for our lady dribblers.

Lady Archers win Fr. Martin Summer Cup

null

The La Salle Lady Archers defeated defending UAAP champion FEU, 53-46, to complete a 10-game sweep in the women’s division of the 15th Fr. Martin Summer Cup at the San Beda Gym yesterday.

Ma. Eileen Urieta poured in eight of her 17 markers in the final period while Bernadine Yamamoto chipped in 11 points for the Lady Archers.

Our cagebelles also won the Metro Basketball Tournament earlier this year. The team looks steadfast in its goal of winning another championship in the UAAP, something they last experienced in 2002 during their 4-peat run.

Father Martin’s Cup: Lady Archers in Finals

La Salle capped its eight-game elimination round sweep with a 74-54 win over arch-rival Ateneo, 74-54, to move one win closer from sweeping the women’s title in the 15th Fr. Martin Summer Cup at the San Beda Gym.

Defending UAAP women’s champion Far Eastern U downed Adamson, 68-64, to barge into the finals where it needs to beat La Salle twice to snatch the crown.

Lady Archers start off right in FMC Summer

The De La Salle Lady Archers routed University of the East, 65-31, to debut in splendid fashion in the Fr. Martin Summer Cup on April 17 at the St. Placid Sports Center in San Beda in Mendiola.

Jo Gloriani led the way with 17 points with Hannah Viterbo contributing 12 points.

The green and white squad dictated the tempo early, frustrating UE with its fullcourt pressure defense and took off with an 8-0 start courtesy of back-to-back Gloriani three-pointers.

Viterbo beat the buzzer at the half for a 14-point bubble, 34-20, with the outcome already settled.

The obviously outmatched East squad was limited to four field goals in the second half.

Cindy Resultay singlehandedly carried the Amazons with 15 points.

Fr. Martin’s Cup: Archers bow to Stags

torres_fmc_22feb2009Catch up was the name of the game. For majority of the game, the De La Salle Green Archers played catch up to the undefeated San Sebastian College Stags. The Taft-based squad had a few tastes of the lead but they were unable to hold on to it as they finally bowed down to the SSC Stags, 66-71.

The first quarter ended with the Archers trailing 18-12 but the Stags didn’t content themselves with it as they made seven straight points, including a shot from rainbow territory, to open the 2nd quarter to give them their biggest lead of the ballgame, 25-12. With 6 minutes to go in the first half, Gab Banal finally broke DLSU’s scoreless stretch by scoring two points from the charity line. The score being 14-25 in favor of the Stags, San Sebastian continued their offensive attack for the remainder of the quarter, scoring 12 more points that included a couple more of threes. During this time, the Archers struggled to fight back, scoring 14 points to end the first half at 28 points, against Baste’s 37.

Going back into the court for the 2nd half of the game, the Archers tightened up their defense, limiting San Sebastian to just 4 points in a span of 4 minutes. During this time, all five Archers on the court got a touch of the ball and contributed to trimming their deficit down to a single point, 41-40. The 12-4 run started with Ferdinand’s layup at the beginning of the half and Bader Malabes capped it off with a shot from beyond the arc. At this point, the Stags picked up steam and started on their offensive attack, again distancing themselves from the Archers by as much as 7 points, 52-45. As the clock wound down, the Archers managed to score four more points, courtesy of a jumper from Manoj Chandumal and two shots from the stripe from Banal, to trail by only 3 points, 52-49, to end the third canto.

The final ten minutes of the game started off aggressively. LA Revilla made a three to tie the ballgame 52-52. Baste answered with one of their own but Revilla made yet another three to tie the game again at 55. The two teams made a bucket each, tying the ballgame for the third time in the quarter, at 57. Unfortunately, just as he was streaking hot, Revilla fouled out with 5:57 to go. SSC took advantage of this as they pulled ahead again in the next few possessions, 63-58. The Archers, though, didn’t give up. They rallied against San Sebastian and Maui Villanueva’s jumper with 2:45 to go tied the game at 63. This will be the last deadlock of the ballgame.

Things seemed to turn around as in the next possession, Banal calmly sank a three, putting the Archers up 66-63, with 2:22 left. Unfortunately, the boys in green were just given a taste of the lead. And it was the last bucket that they were going to make. Within the next minute, the Stags scored 4 straight points to erase the lead and to pull ahead by 1, 67-66. Time was running out and the Archers were forced to foul – Baste made the first but missed the second. DLSU was able to grab the rebound but the pesky defense of SSC forced a turnover again, forcing a foul. They split their charities but the Archers failed to grab the rebound. This time, with 3.3 seconds left, the Stags went to the free throw line and made both, putting them up 71-66. This would be the final score of the game.

Quarter Scores : 18-12, 37-28, 52-49, 71-66

Notes : Hyram Bagatsing, in street clothes, sat out in the sidelines again. Jovet Mendoza hit his back in the 3rd quarter and wasn’t able to finish the game.

Fr. Martin’s Cup : Archers fall to Red Lions

Ferdinand dunkMaybe they were tired from their respective dates the night before? Whatever the reason is, the De La Salle Green Archers seemed to lack luster when they faced the San Beda Red Lions last Sunday, February 15. They showed only spurts of energy as they fell to their second loss, 68-62, to the energetic Red Lions.

It was a close game during the first quarter, with the two teams making and answering each other’s shots. The quarter ended tied at 11 points.

The second quarter was a different story. The Red Lions started with a 7-0 run, before the Green Archers finally woke up from their stupor, nearly four minutes into the quarter. They answered with 6 straight points of their own to trim their deficit to 1, courtesy of LA Revilla’s trio and jumper, and Ferdinand’s split charities. Unfortunately, that was the closest that they’d get for the quarter, as they traded baskets in the next couple of plays. A very nice assist from Joshua Webb to Gab Banal, with 16 seconds to go in the quarter, brought them up 23 to San Beda’s 25. The Red Lions had the last hurrah in the half, though, as they managed to score a bucket, as time ran out, ending the first half, 23-27, in their favor.

During the halftime break, it can be noticed that the Green Archers didn’t go on the court for a shoot-around. Instead, they stayed huddled around their bench. Whatever they talked about seemed to work, as they started out the second half with another7-0 run, ending in a completed 3-point play from Norbert Torres. With the score at 30-27, in favor of the Archers, the Red Lions took the lead back with a drive and a shot from rainbow territory. The DLSU coaching staff called a time out at this point – which produced another burst of energy that saw the Archers holding their opponents scoreless for the next 2 ½ minutes, while scoring 8 straight points, putting them up 38-32. It seemed that they really can’t hold on to their lead, as San Beda regained their composure and took the lead back, yet again. The remaining minutes of the third quarter was reminiscent of the first, with the two teams answering each others baskets. At the end of the third, the score was tied at 47.

In the fourth quarter, the Red Lions opened up with a trio but the Green Archers made a basket to cut the lead by 1, with 8 minutes to go in the game. Unfortunately, that’s the closest that they’ll get as San Beda made basket after basket, and never looked back from there. By the time DLSU called for a time out, 6 minutes into the quarter, they were already down by 7 points. Things continued to spiral downwards as the Archers trailed by 9, 55-64, and Revilla fouled out with 2 minutes to go.

Final score is 62-68, in favor of San Beda.

Note : Hyram Bagatsing didn’t play in this game. The team standing is now 4-2. Their next assignment would be on Sunday, February 22, 2009 against San Sebastian College. The game would be again held at the FEU Gym at 10am.

Quarter Scores: 11-11, 23-27, 47-47, 62-68

Fr. Martin’s Cup : Archers secure win over JRU

BaderIt was another heart-stopping moment when a JRU Heavy Bomber released a wide-open three, with less than 15 seconds to go in the 4th quarter. The Archers were up by two, 65-63, and should the shot go in, the Greens would have to scramble for a basket to win the game. Fortunately, the shot missed and DLSU went on to win their 4th victory in the Fr. Martin’s Cup.

The De La Salle Green Archers started the game slow, allowing the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers to score the first few points in the game. By the time the first eight minutes of the game ticked by, the boys were already down by 9 points, 8-17. Finally waking up, the Archers tightened up their defense and prevented the Heavy Bombers to score in the remaining time in the quarter, while upping the offense and tying the ballgame to end the first.

The second quarter had a series of lead changes, with both teams fighting to gain the upper hand. A half-court violation by the Archers caused them to be trailing by 3, 31-28, near the end of the quarter. Surging ahead, they scored four straight points, all courtesy of Ferdinand, to close the 1st half ahead, 32-31.

The third quarter meant business for DLSU. They were more aggressive, though the lead kept swinging in the first few minutes. Finally, Maui Villanueva makes a basket to break the tie at 37 points, and the team’s press caused JRU to turn the ball over. They weren’t able to make a basket from the turnover but LA Revilla’s steal in the next possession was converted and put them up by 4, 41-37. To further strengthen their lead, Norbert Torres used his built to dominate the inside. A three-pointer from Revilla (off a nice dish from Torres) gave the Archers their biggest lead of the night, 49-40. At the end of the quarter, the score was 52-46, in favor of DLSU.

Both teams weren’t able to score for a good two minutes in the start of the last canto. The first two points were made from Torres’ shots from the stripe, bring them up to 54-46. Unfortunately for us, that seemed to be a signal for the Heavy Bombers to pick themselves up – they scored 6 straight points within the next minute, coming to within 2 points of the Archers, forcing DLSU to call a timeout to regain themselves. Revilla made a quick basket in the next possession but JRU was relentless and scored from the rainbow territory, trimming the DLSU lead to 1. Bader Malabes answered with his own 3. From then on, both teams switched to a fast-paced play, with the Archers hanging on to their lead, bringing it up back to three. A split free throw from JRU brought them to within two, 63-65. With 40 seconds to go, Torres came up big as he made a very crucial block to prevent a 65-all score. A 3-point shot was attempted by JRU but the ball bounced off the rim, bringing the Archers nearer to the W. A foul was given up with 1.9 seconds to go, giving DLSU a point more off the charity line. No heartbreaking loss this time – final score is 66-63.

Quarter Scores : 17-17, 32-31, 52-46, 66-63

Fr. Martin’s Cup: Archers Outlast Olympians

By Gerbs De Castro

Smarting from a heartbreaking 55-56 hairline setback to a resurgent UP Fighting Maroons quintet last week, the DLSU Green Archers notched their third victory in four starts, as they buckled down to business, walloping the STI Olympians with a murderous 74-52 rout Saturday in the ongoing 2008-09 Father Martin Cup Open Division Basketball Tournament at the La Consolacion gym in Manila.

First quarter action saw DLSU jumping the gun as they zoomed to an 8-0 advantage, with L.A. Revilla leading the charge early with four markers and an assist to the dismay of their opponents, who sued for time with 5:33 to go. When play ensued, a brief STI uprising was just not enough as Maui Villanueva and Bader Malabes joined hands with Revilla, closing this chapter, with the Archers on top, 18-9.

A well-balanced scoring binge could best describe the next canto, with nine Archers contributing their share, spearheaded by Jovet Mendoza, Revilla, Villanueva, and Ferdinand, who all chipped in four markers each, as the first half closed its curtains with DLSU in total command at 44-18, punctuated by a Gab Banal rejection as STI attempted a buzzer-beater jumper.

The Archers, with loads of momentum still on their side, greeted the Olympians in the succeeding quarter with two straight field goals from Mendoza and Banal, both of which came from a Revilla assist, padding DLSU’s lead to eighteen as STI called for time with 9:07 left. With the Olympians slightly clawing back to contention, a putback, and a steal with a conversion to boot by Banal, a Jed Manguera trifecta, and a Villanueva jumper, once again ballooned the Archers lead at 59-30. As STI, scored on the next two possessions, DLSU talked things over with 3.6 seconds to go to map a final play. A strong baseline drive by Joshua Webb ended the quarter at 61-34.

In the last chapter, the 2007 National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) champions finally displayed why they are perennial NAASCU finalists, exhibiting a much improved defensive stance, limiting the 2008 National Champions to only thirteen points, but to no avail, as Webb made the final touches, handing the Archers the lopsided victory.

The scores:
DLSU (74) – Villanueva 13, Revilla 12, Banal 10, Mendoza 8, Webb 8, Malabes 6, Bagatsing 4, Ferdinand 4, Manguera 3, Chandumal 2, Co 2, Rodriguez 2
STI (52)

Points Per Quarter:
DLSU 18 26 17 13 = 74
STI 9 9 16 18 = 52
