Another straight set win for the Lady Spikers

This article is guest posted by PinoySpikers.com

La Salle needed only one hour to remain unscathed in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

The Lady Spikers booked their third consecutive straight sets win with a 25-11, 25-14, 25-9 drubbing of National University Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan. Just like in the victories against Adamson and University of the Philippines, La Salle simply used its vaunted blocking to remain on top of the standings.

“Nasa kondisyon ang mga bata. Hindi pa talaga nate-test ang mga bata, yung mga laro ba na close or come-from-behind ang result,” said Lady Spikers mentor Ramil de Jesus.

A date with Ateneo, the Season 72 third placer, on Dec. 12 is expected to be La Salle’s first ‘acid test’ in the tournament. “Isa talaga sila (Lady Eagles) sa inaabangan namin. Kumpletong team ang Ateneo, karamihan sa kanila ay third year players at maganda rin sila dumepensa,” said De Jesus, who won five titles for the Lady Spikers. Read more…

DLSU Volleyball- On the rebound in UAAP Season 73

Going in to their last game of the eliminations a season ago, it almost looked certain that the Lady Spikers would run away with the win and get the sweep.  After all, they were simply a class above the rest of the field. Unfortunately, the team lost the match and it was all downhill from thereon. In what many expected to be a perfect season for the Lady Spikers turned out to be a disaster as they were eventually swept by UST in the finals.

With its core nearly intact, the Lady Spikers are all poised to regain the crown that slipped away from them last year. The team is again among the favorites in this tournament and the challenge is for them to stay focused and motivated from start to finish.

The Green Spikers are also looking forward to improve on their 5th place finish last year. The team’s main stalwarts are back with the hopes of getting a crack at the final four this season.

It’s time to spike that ball once again! UAAP Season 73 volleyball starts today.

Lady Spikers finish 2nd. Green Spikers clinch 5th

It would have been a grand slam of sorts for the Lady Spikers this morning. Seeded 4th in the stepladder semifinals, the girls had to win 3 matches, all in the same day for them to capture the UAAP beach volleyball crown.

They almost pulled it off, beating 3rd seed UST 21-19, 8-21, 15-9 and 2nd seed FEU 21-14, 18-21, 16-14. When they faced defending champion Adamson in the finals, fatigue has probably set in as they were swept 17-21, 14-21. I guess playing 3 successive games in a span of 2 hours was just too much to bear.

Nevertheless, the Lady Spikers were able to improve on their 3rd place finish last year. Members of the team are Charlene Cruz, Mikaela Esperanza and Amanda Villanueva.

The Green Spikers, composed of Michael Antonio, John Dela Vega and Mark Lee captured 5th place.

When he was in Grade 3, Chris Macasaet really wanted to be part of De La Salle-Lipa’s basketball team. When he raised his hand to join the squad, however, the recruiters just ignored him. This influenced him to set his sights to another sport—volleyball.

Seven years later, Chris no longer had to raise his hands to get the attention of recruiters. Several collegiate agents pursued him relentlessly. But a La Sallian since his elementary years, Chris naturally decided to play for the De La Salle University-Manila.

“It has always been my dream to play for La Salle,” Chris said. “Besides, I already knew the school’s system, so there was no use for me to leave.”

The hype he got proved to be warranted. In his rookie year, the 6’2”-tall Chris already bagged the Best Blocker award. This has sent a warning to the whole league. Chris was not just pure buildup—he has real talent.
