Postgame Bullets: DLSU 68 UST 64

  • Finally! After almost a month of agony, the Green Archers at last registered their 5th win of the season. Despite a disappointing 2nd half start wherein the Tigers clawed back from a double digit halftime lead, the team still had enough will and sheer determination to pull through and keep their final four hopes alive.
  • Just when we all though that he would be benched for the entire game, veteran James Mangahas finally unleashed his venom in the 2nd half which stung the Tigers’ chance of a comeback and sealing their spot in the semifinals.
  • James and Bader were not fielded in during the first half. Coach Franz surely sent a strong message to these guys but eventually they all got a chance to strut their wares later on. Just goes to show that no matter what, the Archers will live and die with our veterans leading the charge.
  • Defense was good, holding UST to just 64 points, 30 in the first half and 34 in the second. UST is one of the highest scoring teams in the tournament.  However, the defensive intensity has to be maintained for the full 40 minutes, not just short stretches.
  • For the second straight game, Joel ably quarterbacked the offense, and was a key factor in helping the Archers erect that 18 point lead in the first half. It was his assist to a wide open James that enabled that Mangahas triple that created separation in the last few seconds.
  • Free throw woes returned to haunt the team. If not for the misses, the Archers would have built enough of a cushion and the game would not have been the nail biter that it was.
  • Turnovers hurt the team early in the 2nd half, enabling UST to tie the game at 43-all. Overeagerness, plus the pressure exerted by the UST rally contributed to the spate of errors. The Archers scored only 6 points in the 3rd quarter after compiling 42 points in the first half. Fortunately, the entry of James somewhat steadied the team, and they were able to battle UST on even terms for the remainder of the game.

Mangahas stars as Green Archers goes to the Finals

The FEU Tamaraws thought stopping JV Casio meant stopping De La Salle. But they forgot about James Mangahas, and they paid dearly for that.

The three-year veteran forward scored 20 big points, including the final seven points of the Green Archers, and became the latest hero for De La Salle as the defending champions barges into the Finals of Season 71 of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament.

With the Tamaraws ahead by one-point, 62-61, less than a minute left in the game, Mangahas converted on a Simon Atkins assist and completed a crucial three-point play, to put the Green Archers on top by 2 points, 64-62, 35 seconds left in the game clock.

FEU’s Mac Baracael had a chance to tie the ballgame anew after he was fouled by Rico Maierhofer but the FEU forward, who averages 71.4% from the free throw line, missed both charity baskets. Mangahas was fouled anew and split his charity baskets to give the Green Archers a safer three-point margin, 65-62

Trying to keep FEU’s finals hopes alive, Paul Sanga threw a three-point shooter, which bounced off the rim and Mangahas grabbed the all-important offensive rebound, his lone carom for the game, and sped his way to the other end of the court for an easy lay up which finally nailed the Finals slot for the Green Archers.

With the win, the Green Archers cemented their claim of being the most dominant UAAP basketball team as they will make a 13th finals appearance in 15 consecutive UAAP seasons, missing only in 2003 and in 2006, the year of the suspension.

The Archers will meet the league leader, the Ateneo Blue Eagles on Sunday for the first game of their championship series.

Just For Kicks!: Green Archer Celebrity Lookalikes

The movie star good looks of the Green Archers have catapulted their popularity from league favorites to full celebrity status, attracting fans even from rival schools and kibitzers from outside the league. Proof is in media attention-magazine covers and big advertisement contracts started long before pre-season, with sporting giants cashing in on the success and commercially viable good looks of season 70′s surprise champs. Sophomore playmaker Simon Atkins and star point guard JV Casio are in fashion mags and billboards. Basking in their share of the limelight are multinationals Bader Malabes, PJ Walsham and Rico Maierhofer, with the last one starring in a full-length TV commercial for a major sports brand. It appears an unofficial tradition for DLSU Green Archers to score high in the looks department with its long line of basketball celebrities—Maoi Roca, Mon Jose, BJ Manalo, Dominic Uy, Mike Cortez, Jason Webb, Luigi Trillo, Lago Brothers, among others. This year, the men’s basketball team obviously, if inadvertently, maintains the tradition by having members who are deadringers of TV and film stars. Decide for yourselves if it’s a hit or a miss for these stellar match-ups:

Rico Maierhofer is sometimes incredible in the spectacular moves he makes, but can he pass as an alter ego to the actor who’s the latest to play the Incredible Hulk, Edward Norton?

Lately, we have been seeing more of Ferdinand in action. Hopefully, he gets to log in more playing minutes and not be relegated to hiding in the house attic as what his lookalike, Josh Hartnett did in the vampire movie, 30 Days, 30 Nights.

Shooter James Mangahas is always serious when he plays. But heck, we are not complaining because he delivers. But do you think he looks like “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” singer Blue’s Simon Webbe?

Maybe we’ll get to see the slashing moves of sophomore Rejan Lee, after all he is not dubbed as “Little Ninja” for nothing. But can you his resemblance to Hong Kong’s singing superstar Jackie Cheung, who once did a duet with Philippine’s very own, Regine Velasquez

Rookie Maui Villanueva is playing like he’s no rookie at all. This early, he is showing his basketball IQ and experience, But does he look like Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition’s Bodie Cruz, son of 70′s movie icon and experienced actor Tirso Cruz?

We have not seen him play last year. And for the limited time he saw action for the Green Archers this season, we were witnessed to the quality minutes he gave the team. Marko Batricevic is Just like his look alike, Cillian Murphy, who played quality villain role in Batman Begins as the Scare Crow.

Bader Malabes has exploded in some games and continue to improve his defensive game. Hopefully, he gets a second crack at greatness this season, after a not so impressive performance last season, as his look alike Patrick Dempsey, who got a second crack at stardom after potraying McDreamy (?) in the hit show, Grey’s Anatomy

Finally, last year’s finals MVP Cholo Villanueva. He is no longer playing but he is still with the team. One more chance for Cholo to prove his special love for DLSU. That statement says it all—Cholo as John Lloyd, would you agree?

Until next time, XOXO

UAAP Season 71: Mangahas, Malabes carry Archers past Tigers

When Casio almost single-handedly carried La Salle to victory against FEU, not a few expressed concern about the other Archers stepping up.

And then James Mangahas and Bader Malabes responded.

The two Green Archer forwards sank important baskets in the crucial stretch of the game and helped the Green Archers escape with a victory over the Tigers, 85-84, in the Men’s Basketball Tournament of UAAP Season 71 at the ULTRA.

With the game tied and momentum shifting to the Tigers, sophomore Malabes unloaded his fourth triple of the night to bring La Salle to the driver’s seat, 80-77, silencing the UST gallery in the process. Former De La Salle Zobel standout Jeric Fortuna and main gunner Dylan Ababou immediately scored back-to-back baskets to regain the lead for the Tigers, 81-80, with under a minute before end of regulation period. Unmindful of the mounting pressure on the Green Archers, the three-year veteran Mangahas maneuvered his way out of the UST defense to convert a go-ahead basket, 82-81, 0:47 left in the game clock.

The Tigers frustratingly executed its endplay as the defending champions’ choking defense denied them a clear look on the basket and any second chance points. Casting off the free throw woes in their previous games, the Green Archers’ converted 3 of the 4 all-important charity shots to provide enough breathing space for De La Salle, 84-80. Not even the buzzer beating trey of Ababou was enough to avert UST’s second loss.

De La Salle ties UE and FEU at 2nd place with a 2-1 win-loss card. The Tigers drops to 1-2, with UP and Adamson.

“We passed that particular test. I think that will help us down the stretch. I give credit to my boys. They didn’t succumb to the pressure, even though during the last three minutes, UST made a run. I don’t know if I am just really lucky, I didn’t call a time out right away, probably I am lucky or I have so much confidence in my boys that we can bounce back and execute well,” said a visibly relieved Coach Franz Pumaren.

That confidence was also seen in Mangahas as he worked his way around UST’s interior defense. The former PCU Baby Dolphin scored 14 of his 18 points in the 2nd half even as Casio again topscored for La Salle with 19 points. Malabes added in 16 markers.

“I think we’re lucky to have survived that game. Rico didn’t get his groove tonight, got into early foul trouble. Just that my role players really step up in this particular game,” added Coach Franz.

It was a see-saw affair in the 1st half which featured seven lead changes. At the end of the first half, Casio led the cause for the Taft-based squad with 12 markers while Mark Canlas exploded with 10 points for the Espana-based cagers.

In the 3rd quarter, Mangahas scored 8 straight points followed by a back-to-back rainbow connection from Malabes to pad the lead of La Salle, 56-48. But Ababou and last season’s MVP Jervy Cruz kept the Tigers at bay at the quarter’s end, 63-58.

The Tigers scored 8 quick points at the opening of the last quarter, anchored on the three-point shot of Ababou and 3-point play by Fortuna, to equalize the game at 66-all. But the Archers maintained their composure and traded baskets with the Tigers until the final deadlock at 77 all going into the last two minutes of the game.

The match also featured the season debut of Green Archer sophomore Marko Batricevic and rookie MJ Mendoza.

The Archers next meet the winless NU Bulldogs on Saturday, July 19.
