Double back-to-back championship for DLSZ in the WBL

Contributed by Louie Razon

De La Salle Zobel’s girls juniors and midgets both won their second crowns of the year as they beat their Miriam College counterparts in the Milo-sponsored Women’s Basketball League.

The Junior Lady Archers survived a late charge from their elimination round tormentors but ultimately prevailed, 51-49.   A tight first quarter saw Coach Barry Tobias’ charges clamping down on defense as Miriam only managed to score 4 points while DLSZ scored 11 of its own. Executing its press break to perfection, the Junior Lady Archers boosted their lead to 12 at half-time. In the third quarter, Kat Nuñez showed one and all why she is the MVP, scoring on back-to-back threes to build the lead to 18 in the middle of the quarter. Jamie Roxas likewise dominated the middle as the shorter girls from Katipunan were unable to handle the sharp entry passes into the paint.

However, defending champion Miriam College patiently chipped away to cut the gap at the end of the third, 40-28. Both teams conserved their energies for the end game as they traded baskets at the opening of the fourth. Zobel had a fairly comfortable 48-38 lead with 2 minutes to go but Miriam forced several turnovers to cut the lead to five with 32 seconds left. Another Miriam basket cut the lead to three with 20 seconds left. A duty foul sent Kat Nuñez to the line from which she converted one of two to ice the game as Miriam was only able to convert on a last basket as time ran out to set the final score.

Both teams were below full strength. Miriam was missing four players: two were in the Under-17 Philippine team who departed for a tournament during the week and two more were sidelined by poor grades. On the green side, senior Tatj Medina suffered a sprain in a tune-up game with the DLSU Lady Archers, Margaux Nonato had side stitches and Sam Razon was battling a fever. To top it off, DLSZ had played TWO games the previous day in the League of South Manila Schools, wherein they prevailed over big and physical International School Manila by only 5 points in the second game. Fortunately, point guard Nuñez and center Roxas seemed to have plenty of reserve energy as they netted 25 and 18 points, respectively, accounting for 84% of Zobel’s points.

Aside from bagging the Championship and the MVP, the Junior Lady Archers also collected the hardware for Sportsmanship, which the WBL considers its most important award.

In DLSZ’s second game, the midgets completed yet another sweep of their tournament, this time a pasarelle-format. The little girls established a 31-16 lead late in the fourth before relaxing and finally prevailing by five at the end. Marga Jimenez was again named MVP of the WBL, duplicating the feat of Kat Nuñez in sweeping the MVP awards for the year. The future is extremely bright for coach Maan Moreno’s charges. The core are almost all in sixth grade and only point guard, Joie de Luzuriaga is graduating.

In winning the WBL, the Junior Lady Archers dropped a whole new set of opponents: Colegio San Agustin, New Era, Community of Learners, Assumption San Lorenzo and Miriam College. Arguably, this was a tougher field than the WNCAA, since the other elimination round group also had Angelicum College, which only failed to qualify for the playoffs when it inexplicably lost a game by default.

Next up is the LSMS where the Junior Lady Archers already have a 4-0 record and another good chance at a championship.

Junior Lady Archers Enter WBL Finals

By Louie Razon

De La Salle Zobel entered the Women’s Basketball League Finals, trumping Assumption San Lorenzo in a rough incident-filled game, 70-56. The Junior Lady Archers dropped the hammer from the opening tip and imposed a 6-0 lead, forcing the Assumption coach to call an early timeout. Ignoring the speed bump, DLSZ made it a 12-0 lead on their rivals and the girls in red never recovered from then. Coach Barry Tobias had the luxury of even fielding in 4 rookies at one point in the second quarter as AC had fits all game long in handling the DLSZ press. The starting five of Kat Nunez, Nicole Arguelles, Annette Razon, Angel Caldo and Jamie Roxas all turned in solid games to prevail even with the absence of reliable veteran, Tatj Medina.

The game started getting rough at the end of the second when Assumption’s Eala hit Bernice Morillo with a cheap shot in the back as time ran out. Incidents didn’t end in the third as the Assumption coach was hit with a technical, then DLSZ’s Morillo was hit with an intentional foul. Later in the quarter, in an unusual move, the WBL commissioner actually stopped the game while ball was in play to warn the Assumption crowd for excessive heckling.

The lead was cut down to 12 in the fourth when Eala connected on a 3-pointer but Kat Nunez answered right back with a converted 3-point play. The outcome was put beyond reach with 4 minutes to go when the Junior Lady Archers made a four-point possession when Jamie Roxas scored underneath while being fouled and Nicole Arguelles grabbed the missed free throw and converted also.

The win gave Group B a sweep of the semifinals after Miriam College handily beat Group A runner-up, St. Paul College Pasig. The rematch of DLSZ and their elimination-round tormentors should a humdinger of a game as their first meeting was only decided by a few breaks and 4 points. The one-game Finals will be held at 9:30 on Sunday, December 4, in the Xavier School gym.

The DLSZ girls midgets made it a double over Assumption as they pulled away in the 4th to win by 16. Coach Maan Moreno’s little girls enter the Finals, also against Miriam College, in the pasarelle-format WBL midgets division.

DLSZ girls team wins 9th-straight Alaska Football title

Contributed by Arnold Andaya

The De La Salle Zobel Girls Football team won its 9th straight Alaska Cup under-16 championship last November 12 as they defeated Miriam 2-0.

On its road to the finals, DLSZ defeated Baguio FC, Ateneo de Davao, Los Banos and Statefields but lost their last elimination match against Miram. In the semi-finals, they defeated Makati Football School.

The team is composed of Nicole Andaya (captain), Sarah Castaneda (MVP), Sandy Palacios, Bea Escudero, Anicka Castaneda, Sabrina Nieras, Maxine Sebastian, Paulina Naguiat, Cristina Montelibano, Cheska Fabros, Angelica Zenarosa and Christina Espiritu.  Coach is Tony Lopez.

WBL Roundup: DLSZ absorbs first loss

After sweeping the WNCAA and winning its first 3 games in the Women’s Basketball League (WBL) by enormous margins, De La Salle Zobel absorbed its first loss of the season at the hands of rugged Miriam College, 36-32. Struggling with its outside shooting all afternoon, the Junior Lady Archers came up with its lowest scoring output for the season. Miriam College now takes the lead in Group B with a 2-0 slate while DLSZ goes down 3-1. Nonetheless, barring any major blowout upsets of Miriam College by any of the bottom feeders, the Alabang girls are practically assured of a slot in the semifinals.

DLSZ wins WNCAA basketball championship

Bringing back the crown that they last won in 2005, the DLSZ Junior Lady Archers completed a sweep of the tournament and brought down a game St. Jude Catholic School, 62-41. It was a tough emotional win for Coach Barry Tobias’ charges as they worked through a shaky first quarter and broke open the game in the third quarter.

The game began with both sides playing extremely tight with scoring coming solely from putbacks and easy layups. Center Jamie Roxas accounted for Zobel’s first six points and backup center Isabel Menchaca accounted for the other four points of the Alabang girls in the first quarter, a grand total of 10. Fortunately, the preparations for defending St. Jude’s top gun, Jolina Go, paid off and St. Jude scored an even more meager 8 points.

In the second quarter, both teams labored hard to score as St. Jude had also made adjustments to stop DLSZ’s fastbreaks off turnovers. To top it off, point guard Kat Nuñez was nursing a fever and so the usual Zobel buzz saw was going in fits and starts. Six minutes of play saw the score at only 19-14. But the Junior Lady Archers once again finished strong in the second quarter as Angel Caldo scored to boost the lead to 26-18 with ten seconds to go in the second. St. Jude called timeout to call a last play but then team captain Annette Razon made a crafty interception of the inbound and scored to send DLSZ into the lockers with a more comfortable 28-18 lead.

Championship nerves settled after half time, the Junior Lady Archers went on a scoring tear in the third, highlighted by a three-pointer by junior Sam Razon. Kat Nuñez had to be sat down with 4 fouls with 3 min left in the third but Zobel had a comfortable lead by then, 44-27. St. Jude in the meantime was still struggling on the offensive end and the lead bulged to 20 at the end of the third, 49-29.

The game was firmly in control thereafter and Nuñez returned with five minutes to go in the fourth to further balloon the lead to 28. Both teams traded baskets from then on, until the final buzzer. The meticulous scouting and pregame preparations of Coach Barry Tobias paid off huge dividends again as Mythical Five member Jolina Go was limited to 11 points, many of them during garbage, after a 35-point barrage in the Game 1.

At the end of the game, it may have been difficult for an unaware observer to tell who won the game as both sides openly broke out into tears and sobs. A rugby scrum would be the apt description for the jubilation of a team that had worked so hard for years to get to this stage. The core of this team came together under coach Chiqui Soriano in grade school when its sole play was Menchaca flinging the ball to a streaking Nuñez.

The collective experiences of this team: 7 am games; losing in double-overtime in the WBL Finals of 2009; getting blown out by 40; blowing out other teams by 40; getting trapped in the St. Scho gym by Ondoy floods; back-to-back-to-back games in the NCR tournament, injuries and illnesses, have really bonded the girls and their cohesion and unselfish team play stamped its class on the league.

Jubilation was complete as Roxas and Nuñez were announced as part of the Mythical Five along with St. Jude’s Jolina Go, Marielle Lamar from Miriam College and Loraine Capilit from sister school La Salle Antipolo. There was very little surprise when Kat Nuñez was hailed as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

In the midgets tournament, DLSZ overwhelmed traditional powerhouse Miriam College by such a large margin that no one seems to remember the final score. Coach Maan Moreno’s little girls showed what could be done with pure heart and skill as Miriam had significant advantages in height and heft. It was back-to-back championships and MVP’s for the midgets as Marga Jimenez was declared MVP. Juniors rookie Margaux Nonato was midgets MVP last year. Joining Marga Jimenez on the Mythical Five were DLSZ’s Joie de Luzuriaga and Jel Alliah Jajurie.

The midgets volleyball team made it a perfect day for DLSZ as they likewise won their championship.

Next up for the Junior Lady Archers is the Women’s Basketball League (WBL) with a different field. In the WBL they will unleash power forward Nicole Arguelles whose WNCAA eligibility was used up when she was plucked from the midgets team to play for high school.

DLSZ one win away from the WNCAA championship

Contributed by Louie Razon

DLSZ broke open a ruggedly fought Finals Game 1 and eventually overcame St. Jude Catholic School to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three WNCAA Finals, 73-55. The Junior Lady Archers jumped to a quick 7-0 lead early in the first quarter but St. Jude ground it out and eventually pulled even in the second quarter, 23 all. La Salle banked on a strong second quarter finish to pull ahead by 11 at the turn. Behind some superb 3-point shooting and some sloppy officiating, St. Jude stayed in the game and the third quarter ended with Zobel clinging to its 11-point lead, 50-39. But the game-long full court press and fatigue finally took its toll on St. Jude’s shallow bench. Exploiting numerous turnovers, DLSZ jacked up the lead to 23 points and benches were sent in with 2 minutes left in the game.

Junior point guard Kat Nuñez once again led the Junior Lady Archers with 19 points while dishing out 12 assists. Sophomore center Jamie backed her up with sixteen points and completely dominated the boards. Coach Barry Tobias’ pressing defense led to at least three 8-second backcourt violations to go with numerous travelling violations and wayward passes by St. Jude. That said, the final score does not really reflect the competitiveness of the game and Game 2, scheduled for 8 a.m. on October 1 at the St. Scholastica’s College gym, should be another exciting match.

There was a scary moment in the fourth quarter as junior forward Sam Razon fell hard after a flagrant foul. Though she presently suffers from a sore shoulder, Sam should be ready for Saturday’s game.

On to the WNCAA Finals for the Junior Lady Archers

Contributed by Louie Razon

With another overwhelming defensive display, the DLSZ Junior Lady Archers cruised past sister school, La Salle College Antipolo. The final score was surprisingly lopsided: 75-31. Topscoring again was junior point guard Kat Nunez. Benches were emptied in the fourth quarter.

It was a sweep for Group B teams as St. Jude upset defending champion and Group A leader Miriam College in the other semifinal. The first game of the best-of-three finals is set either October 1 or October 2. DLSZ had previously beaten St. Jude in their very first game of the season by a very slim 2-point margin. In that game, rust and first-game jitters showed on both sides and the Alabang girls were playing without 5’-11” center Jamie Roxas, who was coming off rehab for a knee injury. It should be a very interesting series as both teams have gelled and improved considerably as the season has progressed.

NU spoils Junior Archers’ finals hopes. Lady Archers eliminated by FEU

The De La Salle Junior Archers’ title bid in UAAP Season 74 came to a stunning end today after losing to the NU Bullpups 49-46 in the deciding game of their Final Four series at the Blue Eagle Gym.

NU thus overcame DLSZ’s twice-to-beat advantage to advance to the finals against FEU-FERN, who dethroned Ateneo 63-56 in the other semis match-up.

It is a sad finish to what had for the most part been a superb season for the Junior Archers. After winning their first 7 games, the team struggled in the second round and was relegated to the second-seed in the Final Four. With most of their players graduating, the Junior Archers will rebuild next season.

The Lady Archers are likewise out of contention as they bow down to the FEU Lady Tamaraws 66-44 in their own semis knock-out affair earlier in the day. FEU will face defending champion Adamson in a finals rematch. The Lady Archers, who lost a couple of key players to injury before the start of the season ends up in fourth place.

Junior Lady Archers sweep into WNCAA Final Four

Contributed by Louie Razon

Behind their punishing game-long full court press, De La Salle Zobel totally dominated St. Paul’s College of Pasig, 67-33 in their quest for the WNCAA Championship. Behind some nifty three-point shooting, St. Paul’s kept it fairly close early in the first quarter but numerous forced turnovers led to breakaway lay-ups that put the Junior Lady Archers comfortably ahead at the end of the third, 45-28. A very tired St. Paul’s eventually yielded and scored only 5 points in the last quarter. The victory gave the team a sweep of Gropu B and avoided a triple-tie for first, which ironically would have eliminated DLSZ because of its slim winning margin over St. Jude.

Next up for the Junior Lady Archers is the Final Four which consists of the top two of each group in the 10-team field. La Salle College Antipolo placed second in Group A, so DLSZ next faces its sister school in a knockout match for a Finals berth. In the other semifnal pairing, Miriam College goes up against St. Jude.

UAAP Final 4: Lady Archers beat Tams to force KO match. NU stuns DLSZ in Game 1

The De La Salle Lady Archers defeated top-seed FEU 57-54 yesterday to force a winner-take-all match in the UAAP womens basketball final 4 at the Blue Eagle Gym. Hannah Viterbo and Aracelie Abaca scored 23 and 13 markers respectively for La Salle. The deciding game will be on Tuesday with the winner facing second-seed Adamson in the Finals. The Lady Falcons defeated UST 53-45 in the other final 4 pairing.

In the juniors division, second-seed De La Salle Zobel absorbed a crushing 66-52 loss to the NU Bullpups yesterday in their own semis match-up. It was bad offensive game for the Junior Archers as they only shot 23% from the field and were 2 of 30 beyond the three-point line. Gabby Reyes top scored for the team with 14 points but he was the only player who ended up in double figures. In the other series, defending champion Ateneo pulled out a surprising 62-53 win over top-seeded FEU. Game 2 of both series are also set this Tuesday.
