NU spoils Junior Archers’ finals hopes. Lady Archers eliminated by FEU

The De La Salle Junior Archers’ title bid in UAAP Season 74 came to a stunning end today after losing to the NU Bullpups 49-46 in the deciding game of their Final Four series at the Blue Eagle Gym.

NU thus overcame DLSZ’s twice-to-beat advantage to advance to the finals against FEU-FERN, who dethroned Ateneo 63-56 in the other semis match-up.

It is a sad finish to what had for the most part been a superb season for the Junior Archers. After winning their first 7 games, the team struggled in the second round and was relegated to the second-seed in the Final Four. With most of their players graduating, the Junior Archers will rebuild next season.

The Lady Archers are likewise out of contention as they bow down to the FEU Lady Tamaraws 66-44 in their own semis knock-out affair earlier in the day. FEU will face defending champion Adamson in a finals rematch. The Lady Archers, who lost a couple of key players to injury before the start of the season ends up in fourth place.

In the juniors division, second-seed De La Salle Zobel absorbed a crushing 66-52 loss to the NU Bullpups yesterday in their own semis match-up. It was bad offensive game for the Junior Archers as they only shot 23% from the field and were 2 of 30 beyond the three-point line. Gabby Reyes top scored for the team with 14 points but he was the only player who ended up in double figures. In the other series, defending champion Ateneo pulled out a surprising 62-53 win over top-seeded FEU. Game 2 of both series are also set this Tuesday.

Ladies, Juniors set sights on Final Four

The De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers end their elimination round campaign with a loss to the Ateneo Blue Eaglets 67-56 last Saturday at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The defending champion Eaglets led throughout the match as they played relentless defense on the DLSZ’s top guns. Axel Torres was the only player who scored in double figures with 12 points while Gabby Reyes was limited to just 4 points. As a team, the Junior Archers were a woeful 22 for 79 from the field as compared to the 55% shooting clip of Ateneo.

DLSZ, with an 11-3 record finishes 2nd in the standings and will still get the twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four. They will face the NU Bullpups (10-4) this Friday, 3PM at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The Blue Eaglets (9-5), just like their senior counterparts are also aiming for a 4-peat this season. They will face FEU (12-2) in the other semis matchup.

Meanwhile, the De La Salle Lady Archers pulled out a come-from-behind 47-39 win over NU at the end of the eliminations last Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym. Aracelie Abaca led the team with 12 points and 18 rebounds.

Despite finishing with the same 10-4 record as UST and AdU, La Salle was relegated to the 4th seed in the Final Four by virtue of an inferior quotient. They play top seed FEU (12-2) this Friday, 11AM at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Jrs cruise past UPIS. Lady Archers lose to FEU in OT

The Junior Archers crushed UPIS 78-56 Saturday to remain tied with FEU for first place at 11-2. Gabby Reyes led DLSZ with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Though already assured of a final four berth, the team’s last elimination round game against Ateneo (8-5) is still a must-win. With the second round ending this Saturday, the NU Bullpups (10-3) can force a three-way tie for the top spot if they beat FEU and if the Junior Archers lose to the Eaglets. A win by DLSZ will assure them of the twice-to-beat incentive in the semis.

Meanwhile, the Lady Archers fell a tad short in their comeback as they lose to FEU 59-53 in overtime last Sunday. Trailing for most of the match, La Salle managed to tie the score in the closing seconds of regulation. Unfortunately, they were not able to sustain their run in the extra period as FEU escaped with the win to remain on top of the standings at 11-2. Despite the defeat, the Lady Archers (9-4) still can force a tie for the second final 4 seed if they win their last elimination round game against NU coupled by a UST (10-3) loss to FEU this Sunday.
