The Lady Booters are back being the queens of UAAP football.

The team reclaimed the crown earlier today as they defeated UST 1-0.This time around, they made sure that there will be no repeat of that crushing setback they had against the very same time where they squandered a twice-to-beat advantage. It sure seemed like history would repeat itself as UST won the initial match of the series last Thursday. But despite a depleted line-up, the Lady Booters showed today that they were the hungrier team.

Thus ends the Lady Booters’ quest to once again regain supremacy after all the disappointments they went through for the past three years after scoring a 4-peat in 2006.

Kudos to Coach Hans Smit and the girls!

Lady Booters unable to finish off UST in Game 1

It’s like déjà vu all over again in the Women’s Football finals as the Lady Booters were not able to close out the series in Game 1, losing to UST 2-0.

Yesterday’s setbak brings to mind last year’s finals between the same two teams as La Salle squandered a twice-to-beat edge to UST to stop the Lady Booters from winning their first football crown since completing a rare four-peat in 2006.

Perhaps the biggest blow to the Lady Booters in this championship series is the loss of ace goal keeper Haya Ibarra. She injured her anterior cruciate ligament after the double round eliminations.

Without Ibarra, UST relied on top striker Marianne Narciso to deliver the killer blows as she scored all of the two goals in the match.

The winner-take-all match is scheduled this Sunday, 9AM at the ADMU field.

The finals matchup volleyball fans have been eagerly awaiting is now set. On Wednesday, our Lady Spikers, the defending champions, face off against surging UST Tigresses, which swept the 2nd round. The eliminations saw both teams split their encounters, with each team needing a decisive 5th set to eke out a win. We should expect a very exciting matchup in Game 1 on Wednesday, February 24.

University of Santo Tomas stunned La Salle in the penalty shootout, 4-1, after a 1-1 regulation tie to seal the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s football crown Tuesday at the Ateneo field.

Joma Clemente knocked in the title-winning goal over De La Salle goalkeeper Hannah Ibarra as the Tigresses clinched their first ever UAAP women’s football crown.

Shiralyn Francisco, Jovelyn Artillaga and Aprilyn Reyes earlier scored in the shootout before a save by Irish Jane Rapal on a shot by La Salle’s Samantha Nierras turned the match around.

“It was the team unity and great chemistry that won it for us,” said UST rookie coach Rozano Estraban.

The Lady Archers drew first blood with a goal by Ma. Clarissa Lazaro in the 61st minute but the Tigresses drew level with a strike by Marianne Narciso in the 68th minute.

La Salle came into the finals undefeated with six wins and two draws en route to a twice-to-beat edge.

But the Tigresses beat the Lady Archers, 2-0, behind two goals in extra time last Thursday, forcing a rubber match for the title.

Mary Cres Ignacio, who scored one of the goals in that win, was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the women’s tournament.

Rapal was named the Best Goalkeeper while Narciso won the Rookie of the Year award.

Louella Leah Amalio of UST took home the Best Defender, Nierras the Best Midfielder, La Salle’s Jessica Ryon the Best Striker, and UP got the Fair Play award. –GMANews.TV

University of Santo Tomas stunned No. 1 La Salle in extra time with a 2-0 win Thursday to force a knockout match in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s football finals at the Ateneo field.

Mary Cres Ignacio scored the game’s first goal in the 97th minute before Aprilyn Reyes followed with another in the 98th minute for the Tigresses, who stayed alive as the Lady Archers hold a twice-to-beat edge in the finals.

“Medyo naubusan kami ng hangin pero mabuti nalang at nakabawi nung extra time (We kind of lost steam but good thing we were able to bounce back in extra time),” said UST coach Rozano Estrabon.

The Tigresses and Lady Archers return to action on Tuesday at the Ateneo field to determine the women’s football champion.

Ignacio knocked in the goal when La Salle goalkeeper Hanna Ibarra failed to cleanly block the ball.

Reyes tapped in a shot by Marianne Narciso and the Tigresses have a comfortable 2-0 lead with time running out.

La Salle had a scoring chance with only a minute left in regulation when Samantha Nierras broke free but her shot went straight to UST goalie Irish Jane Rapal.
