Lady Spikers shoot down Ateneo in 4 sets

The Lady Spikers continued its dominance over Ateneo with a 21-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-21 victory today. After losing the first set, the team showed great composure to take the next three sets. The game was tight all throughout but in the end, it was La Salle’s championship experience that helped them come through in the end.

The team was again led by Abigail Marano who scored 18 points followed by Michele Gumabao and Cha Cruz with 16 and 14 points respectively. La Salle also got steady contributions from rookies Mika Reyes and Camille Cruz.

Undefeated after two games, the Lady Spikers will next face NU this coming Wednesday.

In the men’s division, the La Salle lost to defending champion UST 26-24, 25-12, 25-17. The Green Spikers now sport a 1-2 record.

New “Big MAC” leads Lady Spikers to first win

Mainstays Michelle Gumabao, Abigail Marano and Charleen Cruz came up big for the De La Salle Lady Spikers as they escaped with a hard-fought victory over Adamson 25-20, 25-23, 13-25, 25-22.

Marano top scored with 17 points while Cruz and Gumabao added 13 and 12 markers respectively for the defending champions.

The Lady Spikers would need to come out with a more dominating performance next week as they will face a recharged Ateneo team.

In men’s volleyball, the Green Spikers lost their initial outing last Saturday against FEU, 25-16, 17-25, 25-23, 25-16.

Sweep Victory: Lady Spikers reclaim UAAP title

This article is guest posted by PinoySpikers.com

La Salle capped a dominating season with a 25-18, 25-17, 28-26 victory over University of Santo Tomas Saturday to win the UAAP Women’s Volleyball championship at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan. It was payback time for the Lady Spikers as they lost to this same team in the finals a year ago.

Despite the Tigresses holding fort to a 24-19 lead in the 3rd set, the Lady Spikers showed poise down the stretch to hammer out this come-from-behind win. Captain Cha Cruz, who was named the Finals MVP, collected 14 hits, including four blocks, while Michelle Gumabao and season MVP Jacq Alarca combined for 25 markers.

Though they are officially 16-1 in season 73, the Lady Spikers are technically undefeated as their lone setback was a forfeiture due to an eligibility infraction.

“Hindi namin inisip na may talo kami. Inisip namin na 17-0 kami, talagang pinaghirapan ng mga bata ang championship na ito,” said a jubilant coach Ramil de Jesus, who has guided La Salle to all of its 6 UAAP championships including a 3-peat from 2003 to 2005.

Maika Ortiz had nine hits while Maru Banaticla added eight markers for Tigresses.

An outside hit by Abigail Maraño allowed UST to move closer in extending the game to a 4th set. But the Lady Spikers did not wilt under pressure as they mounted a rally to regain the upperhand 25-24. The Tigresses were able to tie the count twice, the last was at 26-26, after Ortiz scored a running spike. However, Gumabao scored a kill, while Cruz scored a hit which UST setter Rhea Dimaculangan failed to dig in which sealed the win, and the championship for La Salle.

Aside from the MVP plum, Alarca was also adjudged Best Spiker and Best Server. The other awardees from La Salle are Mika Esperanza (Rookie of the Year) and Michelle Gumabao (Best Blocker).

Another five-set win. Lady Spikers take Game 1

This article is guest posted by PinoySpikers.com

La Salle took advantage of the absence of open spiker Maru Banaticla in the deciding fifth set to escape with a 25-18, 25-20, 19-25, 16-25, 15-10 win over defending champion University of Santo Tomas and move closer in regaining the title in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Tigresses were able to send the game to a decider, but the España-based spikers sorely missed the hard-hitting spikes of Banaticla, who suffered cramps late in the fourth frame.

“I guess yung pagkawala ni Maru (Banaticla), yun ang naging turning point ng game. Kung nandiyan pa siya, baka nag-iba ang kuwento ng laro,” said Lady Archers mentor Ramil de Jesus.

Jacq Alarca unloaded 19 hits, including four service aces, while Michelle Gumabao, Abigail Maraño and Stephanie Mercado added 13 points apiece for La Salle.

Leading MVP contender Aiza Maizo uncorked 20 hits while Banaticla was still able to finish with 19 hits, including four service aces, for the Tigresses. Cha Cruz contributed 11 points and 11 digs for La Salle.

The Lady Spikers can clinch their sixth league title with another win in Game 2 slated on Saturday.

A kill by Maizo gave the Tigresses its last lead of the match, 5-4. La Salle was able to pull away at 9-6 after a Maraño hit when UST scored three straight points, highlighted by a left-handed kill by Maizo to last tie the count at 9-9.

But this was the best the Tigresses can offer, as Maika Ortiz committed a service error followed by a block by Alarca, two successive hits by Cruz and a Maizo attacking error for the Lady Spikers to take a 14-9 spread. Maizo connected a kill for UST to inch closer to 10-14 before reserve Verlyn Bernal misfired on her serve for La Salle to clinch the match point.

It was the third straight five-set win for the Lady Spikers, who finished with a 13-1 record in the elims.

“Breaks lang ang nagpanalo sa amin. Pinahirapan kami ni Banaticla sa third at fourth set,” said de Jesus.

Lady Spikers dispatch pesky Eagles. Set to face UST in finals rematch

This article is guest posted by PinoySpikers.com

For the second straight year, De La Salle and Santo Tomas will meet in the UAAP Women’s volleyball  finals.

But the Lady Spikers need to toughen up in close games like this if they want to dethrone the Tigresses. La Salle went to the eye of the needle once again to outlast a stubborn Ateneo side, 26-24, 21-25, 25-17, 26-28, 15-8, in the Final Four Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The series opener between the Lady Spikers and the Tigresses is set on Wednesday.

“Disorganized ang blocking namin at lumabas ang mga pagkakamali sa mga service. Masuwerte na kami at nanalo, at least na-test nang husto ang mga bata,” said a relieved Lady Archers mentor Ramil de Jesus.

Stephanie Mercado finished with 19 points while Jacq Alarca and Abigail Maraño contributed 14 points for La Salle.

In what expected to be an easy outing for the Lady Spikers, has turned out to be a close one. Ateneo took the game to a fifth frame with a Fille Cainglet scoring go-ahead kill and Bea Pascual banged in set-winning tip-in.

The Lady Eagles even took a 3-1 advantage early on when La Salle banked on its experience to take a 7-3 spread after Dzi Gervacio committed an attacking error. A running spike by Gretchen Ho allowed Ateneo to inch closer to 7-8 before the Lady Spikers went on another run, as setter Mika Esperanza scored on a drop shot to take a 13-8 lead.

Cainglet and Gervacio finished with 19 points while Ho chipped in 11 hits, including two blocks, and Kara Acevedo had 10 markers for Ateneo.

Green Spikers bow to UST. Finish 4th

In the Men’s division, defending champion UST arranged a finals rematch with long-time rival Far Eastern University with a 23-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-16, 15-8 win over La Salle.

Staring at a 3-7 deficit in the deciding fifth set, JP Torres, James Pecaña and Jayson Ramos combined forces in the Growling Tigers’ searing 11-0 run to move closer to match point. UST, which is seeking a ‘four-peat’, sealed the win with a kill by Pecaña.

“Experience ang nagpanalo sa amin. Yung first two sets, kulang sa timing yung blocking namin pero mabuti na lang at nakabawi kami,” said Growling Tigers coach Emil Lontoc.

Torres had a career-high 24 hits, including five blocks, while Jay Depante added 16 points for UST.

Chris Macasaet and Christopher Antonio scored 14 hits apiece while Mark Lee and Kevin dela Vega chipped in 12 points each for the Green Spikers, who improved on their fifth-place finish last season.

The Growling Tigers and the Tamaraws begin their best-of-three championship series on Wednesday.

Men’s Tennis Team gets swept in Finals

UST completed its back-to-back title bid in UAAP men’s tennis with a 3-2 win over La Salle. The Tigers swept their best-of-three championship series.

Lady Spikers escape UST. Green Spikers fall to 4th

This article is guest posted by PinoySpikers.com

Tested for the first time this season, the Lady Spikers went thru the wringer before escaping with a 25-20, 25-27, 18-25, 25-22, 15-12 win over defending champion University of Santo Tomas Sunday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament before a jampacked crowd at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

La Salle finish the eliminations on top with a 13-1 record while the Tigresses are in 2nd place with a 10-4 slate.

“Hindi ako satisfied sa inilaro ng mga bata, hindi La Salle team ang nakita ko. Lumabas ang pagkabata ng setter ko (Mika Esperanza), nauubusan ng diskarte kaya nakakalusot ang UST,” said La Salle mentor Ramil de Jesus.

The Lady Spikers will have the twice-to-beat advantage when they meet 4th-seeded Ateneo in their semifinal match-up on Saturday. The Tigresses also has the same incentive with they face Adamson in the other Final Four pairing on Wednesday.

Team captain Cha Cruz scored 17 hits, including two blocks, while Stephanie Mercado and Abigail Maraño added 15 points apiece for La Salle.

Aiza Maizo had 20 points while Judy Caballejo chipped in 17 hits, including two service aces, for UST.

The Tigresses last tied the count at 11-11 via a Maizo kill before Mercado connected a running spike and Michelle Gumabao followed it up with a tip in for the Lady Spikers to take a 13-11 lead.

A hit by Maika Ortiz allowed UST to move closer within a point before Mercado and Gumabao clinched it all for La Salle with two consecutive kills.

La Salle swept Ateneo in their two elimination round meetings. “The true battle begins on Saturday,” said de Jesus, who is seeking to guide the Lady Spikers to their sixth title. Read more…

Lady Spikers unlikely to repeat last season’s collapse

The Lady Spikers are officially at 12-1 (really 13-0). With 3 losses (to La Salle in straight sets, to Ateneo also in straight sets, and to UP in 5 sets), UST is at 10-3 and cannot catch us no matter what the result of Sunday’s game is. With one play date left, the blue bird universities are currently tied at 8-5, and the loser of Sunday’s game gets the pleasure of facing the Lady Spikers in the final 4. NU and FEU are tied at 4-9, while UP and UE bring up the rear at 3-10. Interestingly, the tail enders both have a victory over a final 4 team: UE over Ateneo (their win over us was on paper), and UP over UST.

This season is practically a replay of last year upto this point. The Lady Spikers has won all its games on the court, while UST has a few losses on its slate. Remember that last year, UST found a way to beat La Salle in the last game of the eliminations, and that continued when they met in the finals. However, this edition of the Lady Spikers seems to be more mature and complete than last year’s team. They’re definitely more confident, and very little has rattled them so far – they’ve actually lost only 2 sets on the court in the entire tournament (all in the first round when they seemed to lose interest after leading by 2 sets and allowed the opponents Ateneo and FEU to steal a set each). Their dominance has been fuelled by their effectiveness and efficiency – they’ve only played 41 sets so far, and although the official tally is 36 sets won and 5 lost, the real score is 39 and 2. In contrast, UST has won 32 sets and lost 17, Ateneo has 29 and 16, and Adamson has 28 and 21.

UST looms as the probable other finalist, but they have been inconsistent. After sweeping Adamson in straight sets last week, they were extended yesterday by a much weaker FEU team. What’s food for thought for UST is that if they had lost yesterday’s game, they could have ended up tied with the winner of the Ateneo-Adamson game with a 9-5 record assuming we win on Sunday. UST remains to be a strong team despite the departure of Tabaquero, Santiago and their libero, but their inconsistent play has to be worrying for their coaches.

While there have been some fears that the Lady Spikers may have peaked too early, indications are that they are still improving. For example, while the blocking has remained to be one of their biggest weapons, the floor defense has noticeably picked up. Their conditioning has not even tested yet, and the team is still fresh from so many straight set wins. No matter who is in the back line, the Lady Spikers always have threats at the net in terms of blocking and spiking.

This Sunday’s game, while no-bearing, will be very interesting, as it might just be a preview of the finals.

Lady Spikers beat UP to nail the top seed

This article is guest posted by PinoySpikers.com

La Salle booked the top seed in the Final Four by whipping University of the Philippines, 25-16, 25-18, 25-14 in UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Abigail Maraño had 12 points, including five blocks, while skipper Cha Cruz added 10 hits for the Lady Spikers, who improved to 12-1. Carmela Lopez registered nine hits while Angeli Araneta and South Ramos had six points apiece for the Lady Maroons.

UP fell to 3-10 along with University of the East at the bottom of the standings. With the match in full control, La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus decided to field his reserves.

Last year’s top rookie Joanne Siy played the whole third set, finishing with six points, while Cyd Demecillo added five markers for the Lady Spikers. Lexi Tatlonghari and Isabelle Lepping joined the fray in the second frame, chipping in a combined three markers, all in the second set.

At the end of the elimination round on Sunday, La Salle will face defending champion University of Santo Tomas. The Tigresses, who lost to the Lady Spikers in straight sets in the first round, have already clinched the second semifinals incentive.

Volleybelles end Eagle’s streak. Gets the twice-to-beat.

This article is guest posted by PinoySpikers.com

La Salle put an end to Ateneo’s seven-game winning run and a streak of 21 consecutive sets won to grab the first twice-to-beat incentive in the Final Four.

Using their height advantage to the hilt, the Lady Spikers pummeled the Lady Eagles, 25-18, 25-11, 25-12, Sunday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Veterans Stephanie Mercado and Jacq Alarca had 11 points apiece while Abigail Maraño chipped in 10 hits for La Salle, which improved their record to 11-1. The Lady Spikers registered eight blocks, with five coming from Alarca, against two by the Lady Eagles.

“Fast play ang Ateneo kaya kailangan kaming bumawi sa blocking.  For me, blocking is considered a form of attack at masaya ako at nasunod ang gameplan na pinapagawa ko,” said La Salle mentor Ramil de Jesus.

Lady Spikers’ setter Mika Esperanza also had a solid game, scoring five of her seven points from service aces.

Fille Cainglet was the lone bright spot for the Lady Eagles with 11 hits, as old reliables Bea Pascual and Dzi Gervacio could only score a combined three markers.

Ateneo slipped to 8-5 to tie Adamson in third spot and trail one and a half game behind defending champion University of Santo Tomas (9-3) in the race for the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.

In the men’s division,  Jay Depante, James Pecaña and JP Torres scored 13 points apiece as defending champion UST hammered out a 24-26, 25-15, 25-11, 25-15 triumph over La Salle for a 11-1 card. The Green Spikers fall to 8-5.
